Welcome to

Pet-Friendly Travel!

Life is just more colourful with pets; a whole new world of experiences is opened up by taking them along for the ride. Whether you arrange your travel around their needs and wants or just accommodate them in your plans, they’ll love you for including them.

YOU MAY HAVE NURTURED THEM FROM INFANCY OR ADOPTED THEM LATER IN THEIR LIVES. EITHER WAY, PETS ARE PART OF THE FAMILY AND IN MANY CASES CENTRAL TO OUR DAILY LIVES.

They, in turn, need their people. They’re dependent on their families to feed and care for them and, for dogs in particular, to provide a sense of belonging to a pack. If it doesn’t seem right to have the furry face missing from the pack photo, make space in the car. Having the pet on your travels will create memories you’ll surely all treasure.

Wherever you go -one and done

Colin loves to get out and about exploring different places with his mum Lisa. That’s why on their travels Lisa has a rule to make sure he’s kept healthy and protected from fleas, ticks, mites, and worms – one and done.

Treating Colin monthly with NEXGARD SPECTRA® means he gets the right dose at the right time so it makes it easier on him, and getting protection from all those nasties in one convenient, delicious chew, makes it easier on Lisa.

Getting the most from this guide!

to pack?

If you’re taking a pet on a roadie, you’ll need to take:

crate for a dog or a carrier for a cat, lined with

pet photos on your phone in case they get lost

collar with tag detailing contact phone numbers

pet life jacket if any boating is planned

first-aid kit including tweezers, scissors, brush or comb, disinfectant, pet painkiller, medications etc

Ready to Roll!

This guide touches on travelling with various pets but the main focus is on dogs because, let’s face it, cats can and do organise trips away from home without anyone’s help.

Within these pages you’ll find where your pup can run, socialise, swim, and frolic with their family. Recommended dog parks and walkways feature for each region, along with dog-friendly beaches and camping grounds.

bottle and drinking dish

Rather than provide definitive lists, it aims to help with your travel planning. Hopefully the guide will inspire many happy, tail-wagging adventures.

Who likes what?

DOGS Because of their adventurous natures, dogs tend to make the best travelling companions. They travel light, are usually eager to explore new places and they never ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ or complain about being ‘made’ to go for a walk.

CATS Cats need the opportunity to have time out and hiding helps them to feel safe. If your cat is staying away from home, provide them with hangout places such as an igloo bed or a cardboard box. Many cats get stressed being in their carrier so, if it’s a long journey, borrow or invest in a dog crate. For shorter trips you can help them learn to feel safe in their carrier by leaving it out in a quiet spot at home, adding cosy bedding and placing tasty treats or toys inside.

RABBITS AND SMALL ANIMALS Rabbits like company so it’s best to transport them with their familiar companions when possible. This will help keep their stress levels down and make it easier when reintroducing them back to their home environment.

Smaller animals, like guinea pigs, can go into a pet carrier if their regular home is not movable. Pop in some used, unsoiled nesting material into the carrier as the familiar smell will be reassuring to them. They must have constant access to food and water while being transported.

Be sure to keep them well away from bigger animals as that could be a frightening experience for them.

HORSES It is said that ‘a horse is a companion, not a pet’, and horse owners know full well the commitment involved when transporting horses.

If you are new to this or considering transporting horses for the first time, here are some basics to keep in mind:

> Avoid feeding horse grains and concentrated feeds 12-24 hours before departing to avoid colic and gastric ulcers

> Make sure your float is well ventilated to prevent excessive sweating and dehydration

> Avoid heavy traffic as this can cause your horse more anxiety.

> Allow one full day of rest for every 8 hours of travel.

Travelling with your

pet by car

Top&TailTip

Signs of car sickness other than vomiting include excessive lip licking, whining, drooling, yawning, excessive panting and trembling or shaking.

How to make a road trip with furry babies as smooth as possible:

✓ Before departure, visit a vet for a health check

✓ Acclimatise your pet to a longer journey by taking them on a few short trips first

✓ Small dogs should travel in a seatbelt harness or in a crate on the back seat

✓ Large dogs should travel in the rear of a hatchback with a cargo barrier, or secured with a leash, or be in a cage on the back of a vehicle

✓ Cats, birds and guinea pigs should be in a travel carrier cage with good airflow and a waterproof bottom

✓ Regulate the temperature in the car

✓ Stop for regular walks, snacks, toileting and stretching

Put familiar blankets into carriers and cages

✓ Use a pheromone spray to calm anxious cats and dogs

✘ Don’t drive with your dog’s head out of the window

Never travel with your dog unsecured on the back of a truck, ute or trailer

✘ Don’t leave pets in a warm car

Don’t let your pet out of the vehicle unrestrained

✘When you’re taking them out of the vehicle, avoid placing your pet in direct sunlight

Feeling Off?

It is hard to know if your pet is going to be a good traveller or suffer from motion sickness until you hit the road. Sometimes they will outgrow it or get used to car journeys but these tips may help.

> Stress can be a major trigger for sickness so try to make sure your dog is comfortable and not moving around too much in the car.

> Try a natural calming aid such as Pet Remedy spray.

> Your vet can prescribe something a bit stronger to help with anxiety.

Cat Adventures

You can’t help but smile when you see a cat out and about for a walk with their favourite human. If you’re tempted to give it a go, there are few things to keep in mind.

> Exploring isn’t for every cat. Consider your cat’s personality before you set out. Some cats’ travel ambitions stretch as far as the sunny back deck.

> Ensure your cat is healthy and up to date on their vaccines.

> Start them young!

> Start in a safe place. Harness train them indoors before heading outdoors.

> Always use a leash.

Top&Tail Tip

Play with your pet or give them a good run so they get lots of exercise before you leave.

> Have a plan in case your cat can’t keep up. A good option is to invest in a speciallydesigned cat backpack.

> Take water, cat food and a first-aid kit.

> Make sure your cat has its ID tag on its harness in case you get separated. Ideally though, it’s best to have them microchipped.

Before you leave checks

> Check your pet insurance is up to date.

> Avoid giving them a meal just before travelling so they don’t have a full stomach in the car.

> Attach a collar and tag with your phone number and, for dogs, council registration tags.

> Update your pet’s microchip details, in case they go missing and lose their tags.

Need to leave your pet behind?

Arrange for a family member, friend or neighbour to care for your pet in your home or theirs.

Organise a house- and pet-sitter; there are websites to help you find the best person. This is a good option if you have more than one animal needing care.

Pet feeding services are another option. Someone will visit daily to check your pet is safe and to provide company.

Traditional boarding kennels and catteries offer professional care and sometimes the chance to socialise your pet.

Dogs in public

Are dogs allowed in town?

It depends on the town. Many are OK with dogs on leashes, but some city centres are not. It pays to check with the relevant council. Goes without saying that any mess needs to be removed from the scene.

Are dogs allowed on beaches?

Some beaches welcome dogs at any time, off-leash even, but most have restrictions such as a specific areas where they can be or times of the day they’re allowed. Look for signs located near the beach. Even on beaches where dogs can be, they’re not allowed in the area between the surf lifesaving flags.

What does off-leash mean? While your furry mate can run free on beaches, reserves and parks designated off-leash, they must still be under control. That means they will always come back to you when called. And if you can’t see your dog, it’s not considered under your control.

Why must dogs always be within sight and under control?

Dogs are naturally inclined to hunt and chase and even if yours is a mild-mannered wee pooch who ‘wouldn’t hurt a fly’, they can damage ground-level nests or scare parent birds away from their eggs. Plus, not everyone likes dogs and being confronted with one off-leash, with no sign of their human, can cause problems for all concerned.

Are there public places you can never take a dog?

The obvious ones are wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and areas known to be home to kiwi. Wetland areas are also off limits, as they feature vulnerable, protected wildlife and the environment itself is fragile.

What about church grounds, pā sites, historic places, those sorts of places?

Areas of cultural significance are out of bounds for dogs. Such

places require respect and dogs don’t generally understand that…

Why are dogs not allowed on sports fields?

All that lovely green, wide-open space looks perfect for a game of fetch, right? It’s also quite tempting to leave a deposit between the goal posts. And even the most responsible dog owner will miss the occasional mess. For the same reason, dogs need to be kept clear of children’s play areas. They’re not allowed within 10 metres.

Speaking of wide-open spaces, what about farms?

If you and your dog are on a farm, you must have permission from the farm owner. Ensure your dog is under control, especially during lambing season, remembering that the ewes will be nervous seeing a dog nearby. And you need to pick up after your dog, as their droppings may contain bacteria harmful to farm animals.

17TRAVELLING WITH PETS
Before leaving on holiday, it’s worth checking dog control details of the district you’re heading to. Each council has its own rules and they may change with the seasons, too. The Department of Conservation’s rules also vary; we recommend you visit DOC’s website for updates.

Hiking with dogs

Out into the great outdoors with your best friend by your side sounds nothing short of wonderful. But does your dog need a permit? What dog access rules apply? They vary depending on the area, and you need to be sure. There are three types of dog access on DOC land:

Open dog areas – no permit required

In these areas, your dog may be off or on a leash, depending on the site. Access may be limited in certain seasons or conservation periods, such as bird nesting seasons, so check the DOC website and local signage for current rules.

Controlled dog areas – permit required

You can take your dog hiking in controlled dog areas, but you will need a permit from the nearest

DOC office / visitor centre first. Permits can take up to five days to process, so apply well before your planned trip.

Controlled dog areas – strictly no access

Many of New Zealand’s national parks, wildlife reserves and sanctuaries have a complete dog ban all year round. This includes the foreshore of controlled areas, and all DOC campgrounds and huts unless specified. otherwise.

Be sure you understand the rules, as breaching the conditions of your permit can result in a fine or prosecution. If your dog is found in a national park or controlled area without a permit, it may be seized and impounded, or destroyed. Check out the DOC website doc.govt. nz for a full description of where you can visit and which rules apply.

Ways to Keep Your Canine Cool

Early and Late Walkies

Just as humans are encouraged to avoid going out during the warmest part of a summer day (from 11am-2pm), the same applies to dogs. Plan to walk before 10am and after 5pm to be on the safe side.

Rule

Not sure if it’s too hot outside for your dog?

Try holding the back of your hand to the ground and if you can’t handle the heat then neither can your pooch’s paws. Same goes for black-sand beaches. If you have to hot-foot over the sand, it’s time to rethink the timing of your beach visit.

> FIND SHADE

When you’re sitting outdoors, make sure there is a shady area for your pup to zonk out in. Avoid direct sun exposure; this is especially important if your dog has to stay tied up. Keep a sarong in the car as it makes the perfect make-shift shade or window blocker.

> WATER

Over the very warm months make sure you have extra water available for your pup. On walks over an hour long, take water for them; we recommend always keeping a bowl or container and bottle of water in the car.

> COOLING MATS

There is a range of products including cooling mats, jackets and collars that you pop in the fridge that can really help hot dogs, especially puppies and seniors who struggle to maintain their body temperature. Believe it or not, some doggie swimwear is not just for looks; it’s designed to keep your pooch cool for longer.

> FROZEN TREATS

Whether you go gourmet and make your own ‘pupsicles’, keep a filled KONG toy in the freezer or simply pop a few ice cubes into their bowl, your pooch will appreciate the cool treat.

TOP & TAIL TIPS:

• An easy ‘pupsicle’ is made using plain chicken stock, poured into ice cube trays and frozen.

• Cats and dogs don’t sweat, so try dipping their feet into water to help cool them down.

In case of Emergency

AA Roadservice treats locked-in-car pets as they do locked-in children – as an emergency. Such calls are prioritised and attended free of charge whether the caller is an AA Member or not.

To call the AA for emergency lockout assistance, call 0800 500 222 or *222 from mobile phones.

On a 30°C day, the temperature inside a car can reach 39°C in less than five minutes; in 30 minutes, it will be 49°C. Even in a lightcoloured vehicle, parked in the shade, with the windows open.

What can I do if I see a pet suffering in a locked, hot car?

Call the AA immediately.

Because there has to be someone at the scene to take responsibility for the pet, the Police or the SPCA will also attend. And if the situation is deemed to be serious, the AA will call the Fire Service in case there is a delay in arrival.

What if my pet gets lost? It’s important to have your pet microchipped and that the

information linked to it is up to date. If your dog or cat goes missing and is taken to a vet, the local council or the SPCA, the chip will be scanned and you’ll quickly be contacted.

Lost pet finder is an online service to register details of lost and found animals. If your dog or cat has wandered off, this is a good place to start. And if you find a pet that seems to have lost touch with its family, this site is also helpful for reuniting them. If it’s not possible for you to

keep the lost pet with you until its family is found, take it to the nearest vet or SPCA.

What if my pet gets hurt?

Keep a pet first aid kit handy so you can act fast to treat wounds. For more serious episodes such as falls, bee stings (where reactions can be fast and potentially fatal), choking or ingesting something they shouldn’t, you need to go straight to the closest emergency vet.

PAYNES FORD TRAMLINE TRACK, TASMAN This 30-minute walk (each way) follows the route of a tramline that operated between the early 1880s and 1905 that was used to take timber from the Tākaka Valley down to Waitapu wharf. It provides access to some excellent swimming holes in the Tākaka River as well as to rock climbing areas.

MARLBOROUGH RĀRANGI BEACH Just 15 minutes from Blenheim, Rārangi has stunning views of both the sea and the Wither Hills. You and your pal can meander through the pine forests, explore the sand dunes or wander for miles on the beach’s stony shores. There are plenty of sticks to collect and new smells to discover along the way. Be mindful that waters can be rough for

pup swimmers and there are sometimes seals that pop in for visit that need their space. There is a DOC campsite located on the beach where you and your family can stay overnight (with a dog permit).

DOG-FRIENDLY WINERIES

Wineries ready to pour you a premium glass of vino and your dog a nice big bowl of water include Colombo and Saint Clair in Marlborough and Forestry Winery in Blenheim.

CARING FOR PRECIOUS WILDLIFE It’s best not to put our furry friends in the position to get something wrong as even with the best intentions, a dog’s natural instincts on seeing, smelling or hearing a small creature may over-ride your voice control of them. Be mindful of wildlife at the beach and avoid allowing dogs to be off the leash above the high tide line, in dunes and in areas of beach-side vegetation. Little Blue penguins and other protected endangered species are known to nest on the foreshore across much of the West Coast.

KIWI AVERSION TRAINING To help protect native bird species from becoming disturbed, injured or even killed by dogs there are now avian awareness and aversion training courses available throughout the country.

To find out when the next training session is either contact your local DOC office or a local trainer – details are listed on the Save the Kiwi website. In some areas that have kiwi and other ground-dwelling birds, it is a requirement to have the certificate and be recorded on the database.

However, this doesn’t mean your dog then gets a free pass through all DOC sites, as the training does not override any dog access restrictions for an area.

Tip If your dog attacks or kills any protected wildlife, you’ll face a fine and your dog may be destroyed.
