American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) Winter 2014

President’s Message - Thomas M. Scalea, MD I am very pleased to write my first message to the AAST members as president. I attended my first AAST meeting in 1985 in Boston where I made my first national presentation. The combination of excitement and anxiety was hard to control. When Drs. Trunkey and Lewis got up to ask me questions, the anxiety greatly increased. I have similar feelings of excitement and anxiety as I become president of AAST. It is an honor I never expected and I pledge to do my best to continue the wonderful work that has preceded me. I first must thank those who have served the organization for the last several years: Drs. Heidi Frankel, Raul Coimbra, Susan Briggs, and L.D. Britt. I also welcome the new members of the board: Drs. Grace Rozycki, President-Elect; Richard Gamelli, Vice President; David Spain, Recorder and Program Chairman; and Edward Cornwell III, Board of Manager at Large. They will join Drs. Martin Croce, Rosemary Kozar, Eileen Bulger, Orlando C. Kirton, Ernest E. Moore, J. Wayne Meredith, Robert Mackersie, and William Cioffi who continue to serve. Certainly one of the big themes for the next year will be research. As President Cioffi outlined in Philadelphia, we have partnered with the National Trauma Institute to form The Center for National Trauma Research CNTR. CNTR is a real entity and other organizations like EAST, WTA, COT and the ATS have signed on, as well. Other organizations have also expressed interest. I look forward to building a large strong multidisciplinary coalition focused on advancing our trauma research agenda. Already, we have formed an executive committee that will meet at the ACS Clinical Congress. A clinical trials network is forming which will dovetail with our MITC. A data repository committee will collate the data collected. CNTR has convened a senior group of clinician/scientists to define the trauma research agenda. Finally, we are planning a legislative day in February to lobby our elected officials, particularly those legislators who we believe can be helpful to support trauma research. We will be contacting selected AAST members and I would encourage everyone who is contacted to do so. CNTR has existed for only three months - not to bad a job. Drs. Cioffi, Meredith, Gamelli and I will represent the AAST as we get CNTR up and going. CNTR will not be our only research endeavor. The science at the Philadelphia meeting was impressive; some of the best science I have seen in recent years presented at the podium and in the poster session. Many of the papers presented on the first day were multi center studies, and many of those were organized via the MITC. This demonstrates the great strides the MITC has made. We look forward to more in the coming year. We will also continue to interface with our industry colleagues to investigate new scholarships and other ways we can work together to further the AAST's mission. The AAST once was defined primarily by the meeting but we now have many other areas of concentration. Most of this work is done by our committees. The committees did a fabulous job of defining projects and seeing them through last year. Committee chairs have been appointed for this year and the committees populated. I believe that everyone who requested to be on a committee, either formally or informally, has been assigned to a committee. Sharon Gautschy and I have met with each committee chair by phone to define directions for the next year. We met at the ACS Clinical Congress and refined the agendas and be sure that the committees have the resources necessary to be successful.

I thank all of the members of the AAST for placing their confidence in me to be the president. This promises to be an exciting year as we build on past successes but also plan new initiatives. I look forward to communicating these with all of you during the upcoming months.
