Techniques such as Fragmentation, creation of Contrast, Interplay of light, Fluidity, Seamlessness, and visual connection, are used in ideation and development of the concept.

The BIG Re-Think Interior Techniques in Interior Design Practices Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain and Aparajita Basu Assistants: Shail Sheth and Paramdeep Singh Dayani

Brief Outline: The intention of this studio is to develop a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments with reference to interior techniques and its implications on the interior design practice. Here interior technique is defined as “A method, tool and medium that modifies, alters, conceals, exposes an interior element, thus transforming the transformable quality of the space.” The studio offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior techniques and its expression, identity and design outcome. The first four weeks are part of the common foundation program, where students from all streams work together to develop common skills and abilities. The later part of the studio is largely divided into two modules: the first module builds an argument on interior techniques through existing projects and the second module intends to develop a systematic approach to the application of the argument in three different contexts. It is an opportunity to develop an individual design position for disparate sites keeping the program constant.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to: • Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/ approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. • Ability to translate/represent the design argument/ position/approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. • Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position. • Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

(As per the studio proposal*)

Week 01-02 | FD PG Common Exercises

Objectory Process: Objectory is an idea that intends to put the object first. This exercise is an opportunity for designers to question the design process through an understanding of a designed object without focusing on the problem itself. The exercise aims to develop a methodology to identify, list, and analyse objects by dismantling its parts and components. The final deliverable demonstrates precision by way of observing and representing. The study of tolerance is achieved through identifying the assembly of parts, materials, and accuracy by way of orthographic and exploded axonometric/isometric drawings. Documenting the object -Documenting the object in a way which shows how it is held in the hand/ operated/ used. Dismantling and documenting the components -Dismantling the object without damaging the parts. -Organize the parts in the sequence of their assembly. Presentation of the analysis -Using isometric/ axonometric drawings we had to record, document and identify assembly, parts of the objects and object itself.

Selection of Objects 1. Sanitizer Spray Bottle 2. Pen 3. Glue Stick

The Glue Stick works on the mechanism of a rotating screw-jack, which has a gear box and a lead screw which converts the rotatory motion into linear motion.

Glue sticks are solid adhesives in a cylindrical body with twist or push-up tubes. The user can apply glue by holding an open tube, thus keeping their ďŹ ngers clean; because of their easy-to-use and economic value, glue sticks are a popular school and ofďŹ ce supplies. A glue stick body needs to be twisted up from the barrel for use and retracted back after using. The hardnaess and cohesion of the stick body are essential for the spreading and extension/ retraction property. The glue gel should be able to resist the pressure caused by rubbing on the substrate surface, and free to extend and retract in push-up tubes.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

1. The adhesive recipe is first mixed in large vats. 2. Once mixed, the glue is drawn into a filling reservoir which drops a perfectly measured amount of the mix into each and every plastic tube. 3. During this time the glue is extremely hot, move on to a cooling station where they are capped by a series of robotic arms. 4. The glue sticks are once again fed into a second cooling chamber which assures that the liquidized glue cools into a solid form inside the tube, finalizing the production process and rendering the glue sticks ready for retail. HISTORY Henkel AG & Company was the first company to design and introduce the glue stick. Henkel began selling glue sticks in 1969 under the name Pritt Stick, which was prototyped after a tube of lipstick with the intentions of making the application of glue cleaner and easier.

Week 03-04 | FD PG Common Exercises

Factory Process: A factory is a place where materials are processed and transformed with precision, accuracy, and tolerance for assembly. This exercise imitates a manufacturing environment where the process of making starts with a well-planned strategy. It focuses on the planning of manufacturing and execution. The exercise revolves around exploring the ideas of the detail, assembly, tectonics and material as a central core of making. The Planning of Making will involve a thorough understanding of these terms and the concepts related to them are described below with reference to Eclker James’s discourse from his book, Language of Space and Form.

Week 05 | FD PG Module 01

Developing the Argument Brief: The Projects chosen are varied in terms of their typologies, but after studying them, an understanding of questions like why what, how is developed. The historical era centered projects revolve around restoration and reuse as their major pivotal concepts. The spatial revival in today’s context is one of the major attributes pondered upon. The idea of how volume enhances the experience of a space to how exposure is used as experience is the basic summaries dwelled upon. The Standardised mass customised projects use the base idea of colour as a concept and how a palette of materials/ colours create an ambience, a focal point, make an element pop or make them seamlessly blend into space. Sensory articulation is seen to have been another key aspect used whilst designing. The Individual identity-driven projects have used material as a metaphor in designing the spaces allowing them to create a harmonic balance with what is to be designed.

Ideating Roles of an Interior Designer

Week 06-07 | FD PG Module 02

Role 1 | Intervening the Existing Brief: The Main concept kept in mind is retaining the essence of the site and carefully assessing how the intervention affects what exists. The ruggedness and the rawness of the existing site added more value to the elements in terms of reflecting the argument. The role of the interior designer here is reflected in how the idea of where to stop, and how far to go is seen. Light, being an indispensable attribute in the site, is enhanced along the entirety of the intervention, wherein the major idea of drawing attention to the displayed machines is the key factor. Structural retainment is sought after, but the modulation of volume get refected with the intervention.

ATTEMPT 1: ”Exploration

of

Materiality

and Modulation of

Volume creates an Expression in Space” Interior Techniques intended to explore 1. Fragmentation 2. Response to Light 3. Creation of Contrast 4. Division of Volume

ATTEMPT 3: The space has been designed creating a narrow, mystery driven entrance, with a skylight guiding the viewers to the entrance, opening it to a space with a semi-permeable view, making the viewer wonder on what comes next. The exhibition is Leonardo da vinci’s retrospective, open to every curious mind.

ATTEMPT 2: Altering materiality (or material property) and modulating volume can enhance the expression of space

The Ideation began with analysing the images in terms of which ones offered the most potential in terms of reflecting the argument. I began with sketching a rough idea, of how metal can be explored and then started working on the images on Photoshop. As the process went on I then looked for particular references in terms of what I wanted to show and in a few cases of them not being available

Week 08-10 | FD PG Module 02

Role 2 | Standardised Interiors Brief: The Ideation began by exploring the definition and defy grid allowing the circulation path to evolve. The concept of fluidity is inspired by the idea of exploring and altering materiality, which in turn reverted to fulfilling the argument. Wood and its property of sturdiness, and the verticality along which is commonly used, is altered by allowing and exploring the wood bending technique, and also by using the materials like flexy ply and paper veneer to achieve the same. The exhibition and the exhibits are displayed along the path and the flow of element is used to navigate and create a visual connec- tion throughout the space. Modulation of the volume is explored in the existing site along with the element in itself, and one experiences a contrast in expression to what already exists. The material technique explored, is making a waffle structure of wood, and covering it with Flexi ply and paper veneer. The idea of multifunctionality is explored by making the element as a seater, stand, table, and to hold the exhibit.

Role 3 | Identity Driven Interiors Brief: Concept: The translation of the idea of Fluidity is carried along from the project 2, where it gets transformed into the floor as the major element which was not utilised in the previous attempt as it was one of the elements the existing site offfered. The idea is using the floor, and modulating volume by allowing the floor to form a ramp that leads to the exhibition, giving an idea of what to expect, and also creating an above the eye level connection to the machines in display. The Form of the Non structural elements is designed so as to create partitions, visual barriers, and also way finiding elements, creating more purpose. Techniques such as Fragmentation, creation of Contrast, Interplay of light, Fluidity, Seamlessness, and visual connection, are used in ideation and development of the concept. Modulation of volume is explore in all the three roles with exploreing two different materials Interior Techniques: -Modulation of volume -Altering material property -Visual Connection -Fuildity -Seamlessness

Existing Intervention From Role 2
