Tanzania National REDD+ Strategy Program Document
Background The country of Tanzania recognizes the importance of establishing a system of forest conservation in line with the Paris Agreements put in place at the 21st Conference of the Parties. Already, the country is seeing the effects of climate change and the economic strain it puts on its’ people, as well as the impacts on biodiversity and the ecosystem. With these things in mind, Tanzania is moving forward with establishing a Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation program, also known as REDD+. Conservation efforts will primarily be enacted through social, agricultural, and economic changes as these have been identified as primary drivers of deforestation. Monitoring of forest levels will be undertaken via remote imaging in tandem with field data. It is expected that greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by approximately 138-153 Mt carbon dioxide equivalents through the planned actions (URT, 2021).
