If you have no idea what I am talking about, don’t worry, because non-comprehension doesn’t bar you from taking part in this conversation that is full of masturbation innuendos. Imagine that every day you had to take a firm grip of a King Cobra or an equally lethal snake, and not only that, but you had to milk its venom glands to find the anti-venom. Not only is this job fraught with danger, but is also extremely important. Due to the risks that snake milkers take every day, only one in 50 million snake bite victims ever die. Now if that doesn’t get you a Nobel Peace prize,
you could always give one to Barak Obama instead! Oh, wait a minute, they already did. Whale & Commercial Fishing I must confess that I have snared a few whales in my time, and I definitely didn’t use a harpoon. Well, not a standard one made of metal of course! Being a whale or commercial fisherman is easily one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Not only do you have to combat the perilous open seas in all weather conditions, but also tackle a whale at the same time god-damn it! Commercial fishing boats can stay out on the job for a few nights at a time. Between 1992 and 2008, an average of 58 commercial fishermen died every year, which is 128 deaths per 100,000 workers. Just remember the sacrifice that fishermen make every time you put some lipstick on, or simply consume cod and chips, because people put their lives on the line to empty our seas of fish. The least you could do is eat that canned tuna that has been in the fridge since the start of the Millennium.

Understanding the mentality of Thai drivers, and local driving laws (rolls around the floor laughing) is essential to limitingyour driving mishaps in Thailand. It is said that prevention is better than a cure. We all know there is no cure for being a c@&t, so here is our ultimate guide to understanding driving in Thailand.
Living Life in the Fastlane‌ or Not! It only makes sense that the outside lane on motorways or dual-carriageways are the fast lanes, right? Wrong! There is no such thing as a ‘fast-lane’ in Thailand. All lanes are fast-lanes if you are driving fast here. It is quite routine for motorways to have U-turns where you enter the motorway directly into the fast-lane. It reminds of someone who jumps off the back of a slowly moving car and failed to realize you need to be running
just as fast as the car you jumped off in order to remain in an upright position. Just remember that fast-lanes do not exist as such in Thailand, so don’t get stressed about it.
There are Only Two Speeds on Thai Roads Have you noticed on any road in the world that someone who is driving slower than you is an idiot and those driving faster than you are maniacs? This is just the same in Thailand. There are only two speeds on Thai roads – stupidly fast or dangerously slow. From motorbikes with sidecars that boast mobile restaurants driving at a snail’s crawl, to almost derelictpick-up trucks that would fall apart if you sneezed too hard driving at 20kmph, to crazed mini-buses driving at speeds that could break the sound barrier. You need to find the middle ground between the two to effectively drive in Thailand. I’m Flashing…. Move Out Of The Way! This is a real serious thing you have to remember when driving on Thai roads. In the Western world, we use the flashing of our lights to inform other drivers they can have the right of way. This is a sensible and cooperative way to co-exist with other drivers. In Thailand, flashing your lights means the exact opposite. If you are driving down the road and a large lorry flashes you, please do not naturally assume he is letting you have the right of way, as it could end with catastrophic results for you.
There’s No Indication Those little yellow things on either side of your motorbike or car are called indicators. They are a great way to inform other road users around you of your intentions to turn left or right, which helps the flow of traffic and cuts down on miscommunications that can result in accidents. In Thailand, indicators are seen more akin to a fashion accessory that is perched on your vehicles for aesthetics. Never assume that someone is not going to make a turn in front of you solely based on them not turning on their indicators. Thais very rarely use them, unless they are touching up their make-up, so be warned. Keeping it in Front People say you need eyes in the back of your head to drive in Thailand, and although that is a fair statement, you can’t look everywhere at the same time. The best course of action for driving in Thailand is keep your eyes on what is happening in front of you. That might seem like an oversimplified statement but it’s the only way to drive here. in Thailand We all hear about the all-too-common Thai trait of losing face. To be fair, it’s not just a Thai thing, but prevalent in cultures right across Asia, especially in the south-eastern and far-eastern regions of the continent. But what does it really mean? It is extremely difficult for Westerners to truly understand how important losing face is in Thailand. It flies against all conventional and common sense wisdom, but is deeply rooted in Thai society to such a point where lies are not just forgiven, but overlooked as long as nobody loses face in a situation.
What does losing face really mean? Westerners sometimes think that the act of saving/losing face is a bit of a strange and even ridiculous concept, so the only way to explain it in our way of thinking is nobody likes to be embarrassed in front of other people. If someone insults you publicly and many people see that, especially those who you respect, this is similar to what losing face means in Thailand. It’s basically a blight or attack on your reputation in the eyes of others. It’s about what others think of you. I know this might seem strange, but I know Thai and Western joint marriages where the married Thai woman is okay with her husband having an affair with another woman, just as long as nobody knows about it and it doesn’t make her look bad, or lose face in her circle of friends. It’s more about appearances than truth. I suppose if we see it that way, most of the world is like that anyway. Saving Face in a Situation I once heard a great story from a Western man who has lived in Thailand for many years and understood the Thais need to save face. He was once riding in a taxi in Bangkok during the rush-hour. His Thai taxi driver was obviously getting miffed about the traffic and decided he didn’t want to take his fare to his desired location any longer. Instead of telling his customer that, the Thai taxi driver pretended that his car
engine had stopped working. He even went so far as to get out of the car in the middle of the busy Bangkok streets and to open the bonnet and try and fix the ‘problem’. The westerner knew the deal, and simply slid into the driver’s seat and began to start the car from the ignition. As if by magic, the car started first time, with the westerner shouting, “you have fixed the car, well done, it works now.” The western knew it, and the Thai taxi driver knew the Westerner knew it, but both acted like the car had just been fixed and the taxi driver took his ride to his desired destination. Nobody lost face or looked stupid because the Westerner did not make a scene. Everyone is happy. Joking with Your Thai Partner Do you know that Thai people don’t really point with their fingers? They point with their pursed lips in the desired direction. I was sat with my wife and two of my Western friends in a road-side bar in Phuket and proceeded to tell them about Thais pointing with their lips. They didn’t believe me. My wife happed to be looking the other direction, so I shouted ‘oi’ to her and then point my lips to the food vendor on the opposite side of the street. She immediately turned her head to see where I was pointing. My Western friends laughed their asses off, but my wife stopped taking to me for a few days. Why? Because I made her look stupid in front of her and my friends. They do not have a sense of humor about such things. The keys to understanding losing/ saving face in Thailand is never make fun out of a Thai person in front of other people, even if in your eyes it is just a light-hearted joke or harmless fun. Losing face is from a joke in Thailand.
