WONDERLAND HOTEL 2019 / 2020

Purpose The aim of this project was to create a hotel that can be personalised to fit every users thought of their own wonderland. This is carried out by the use of books. This space allows users to engage in their own environment to create their own experience when they visit. The concept was to bring deconstructivism design to this existing building. The space will be utilised to allow visitors to socialise and take a break from the world, and can easily be utilised whether staying at the hotel or just visiting the cafe or library.

The element of “not judging a book by its cover” was implemented throughout this project in both function and form. The exterior facade will stay almost untouched whereas the interior will be the up-most deconstructive interior pushing through the idea of contrast. The colours are left very neutral to essentially allow the books to colour in the interior.

A ROOF The roof was reconstructed with glass to allow natural light to fill in places that hadn’t previously been filled with ROOF light. This idea also creates a calmer environment for those that are reading.

SECOND FLOOR This floor remains as the bedroom and bathroom for the guests. This floor is SECOND FLOOR directly connected to the guest room on the first floor. This allows separation from the lounge to the bedroom.

FIRST FLOOR This FIRST floor FLOOR has access to the guest rooms, reading room, break room and chill room. These areas are kept well lit and very quiet to cater towards people who want to read, study or socialise.

The furniture also matches.

GROUND FLOOR GROUND FLOOR The areas remains as the hotel lounge, reception area + desk, cafe, kitchen, storage, toilets and library. This area very much shows the visual aesthetic and funtion of the building, as the bookshelf design is used on most of the wall.

BRANDING The logo initially derived from the shape of the building.

The section of the building resembles 4 house shapes that have become the shapes of the guest-rooms.

The branding for the hotel runs more than the logo.

The yellow mustard colour remains as the fundamental colour for the branding. The logo design also remains universal for each room. Even though the names of each room will present, iconography is used to inform users too.

WONDERLAND TOILETS

This yellow mustard colour has been chosen as it is a neutral colour that represents light in animations and OCCUPIED books, when illustrative. It also insures that the colour doesn’t intentionally make users feel certain emotions V A C A N T which is why most rooms are kept to a neutral whites and browns. Most of the colour of the rooms will be from the covers of the books.

The Library remains as the centre design piece for the users to socialise and connect. The curved wall provides a walkways that guides users around the building. There are white lights applied to the top area of the shelf.

This area of the Library is used to sit and read. The curves wall also absorbs sound so this area is kept quiet for any users in need to talk to other people about the book they are reading.

The Chill Room is there for those that need a quite room to read. The reading room is perfect for a bright environment, however this room has a calmer WONDERLAND WONDERLAND environment IBRARY D E S to K cater for any mood Lfor any reader.

The lighting plays a very important part in this room. The floor lamps are easily moveable. The pendants keep the room lit. The wall lights also create a warm ambience when the room starts to darken in the night.

WONDERLAND CAFE

The Kitchen remains with the same aesthetic as the entire building. The colour theme is heavily white in staron surface as it is easy to clean and manage WONDERLAND WONDERLAND in a kitchen.

To justify this programme, it is clear to see the importance of reading in the community and how it attracts so many people every year.

The blend of digital and physical books are also important as it addresses the decline in libraries while also pushing to the future using ebooks. Shoreditch is the perfect place for this programme as not only will the locals enjoy reading local authors, but tourists will also be able to read about the local artists too. A lot of this hotel will also be accessible to the public (without needing to be a guest) so it benefits the demographic well. The lack of libraires is also prevalent in Shoreditch, however, bookstores are on the rise so it's very important to recognise the trends in not only design but in society. Tourism also brings in alot of economic benefits to those living in the area, so to cater to those that are travelling will also benefit those that live in Shoreditch.

The facade will push this idea forward by using the bookshelf as part of the interior design. Many libraries around the UK have seemed to forget the elegant design a bookshelf can uphold, which is what WONDERLAND hold advantage over. The bokshelves will become part of the design, rather than an afterthought. As it is a hotel based around books, the books should take center stage.

UNIQLO STORE 2018

Purpose Find the balance between function and form to renovate a building into one that is needed in the community. By researching into the demographic of the location, it’s noted as a very urban and youthful area, with many schools that surround. It was created to cater towards Generation Z. Research was carried out into the different clothing stores that this demographic buy from. As the colleges around the area are heavily schooled in art e.g. UAL, Access and New City College, this building will become a creative outlet for their work in collaboration with close design companies and retail stores. Students will be able to send in their work for it then to be printed and sold, in which the profits will go back into their schools. This building takes natural light into huge consideration. With large glass facades on the south face covering both the ground and first floor, it allows the building to become much more energy efficient and also gives the opportunity for the surrounding environments visual to bleed into the building and vice versa.

This project encouraged an exploration into programmes such as AutoCad and Indesign. Technical elements regarding material structure, elevations, interior elevations and technical drawings for elements such as the stairs and windows were explored. This project also built up my model making skills in scales that explore material structure. The project also introduced skills such as solar and wind studies, as well as the importance of circulation of any building regardless of location.

A playful take on a traditional hand blender

TULIP HAND BLENDER 2019

The Tulip hand blender’s design was derived from the shape of a Tulip flower. The curves and subtlety of the design reflects that of the flower. The colour however replicates the colour of a modern kitchen. This way, the design will stand out but the colour will allow help match the surroundings, like a field of tulips.

The programme used was Rhino. The product was also rendered on Rhino too. I was surprised with the materiality and texture that was so eloquently reflected in the render. The purpose for the hand blender is mainly for form but to use the blender, you hold both petals together. The stronger you hold, the stronger the rotations Renders

PHASE SHIFT 2019

A visual journey, loosely based off the double slit experiment. the double-slit experiment is an experimentation that demonstrates that light and matter can display characteristics of both classically defined waves and particles.

The name is taken from the outcome behind the experiment. Changes in the path lengths of both waves result in a phase shift, creating an interference pattern.

The long exposure shots of the night lights from the city represent the waves, whereas the stairs represent the slits.

The buildings are there for the surrounding areas for the waves to bounce off from. The waves also metaphorically represent people as their lives intertwin in amongst architecture. They start off as particle, but as they delve into the city and react with the architecture there is a “Phase Shift� that allows waves to form. The sounds reflect those of an office and a gallery. This represents the two waves formed.

HIKARI LIGHTING 2017

This project mainly showcases my model making skills.

The Hikari collection design derived from the icy scenic views of a Japanese landscape. In the distance was Mount Fuji, whilst the foreground and background is mainly filled with snow. The foreground has a wild red fox. This imagery is depicted in the collection shown on the right. The colour is kept very neutral and clean; in line with Japanese design. The minimal design was thought from the start to finish.

The Light collection is aimed for students and a demographic who need a temporary light source. The materials used were bamboo, paper and acrylic. The LED light was chosen for efficiency in energy and in cost. They are also battery operated, so very portable, instead of having to locate it near a power outlet.
