BRIEFING

More big changes proposed for hours and stay limits in car parks across East Herts

Wide ranging changes are being planned to the operational hours, tariffs and maximum stay periods at East Herts-run car parks and the council is currently inviting the public to share their views on its proposals.

The council says the aim is to provide additional capacity and promote the better use of space in its car parks while creating standard operational hours and a consistent way of charging across the ‘rural’ car parks, ensuring that users contribute financially to the maintenance and upkeep of the facilities that are currently provided free of charge at weekends.

Hertford

The changes would see the maximum stay on the ground floor (level A) of Gascoyne Way car park in Hertford reduced from five hours to three while the town’s Old London Road car park would change from long stay to offer both short and long stay options.

Sawbridgeworth

In Sawbridgeworth, weekend charges are planned at Bell Street, in line with current chargeable times on weekdays.

On weekdays and Saturday there would be a 30-minute free period and charges would start at 75p for an hour. On Sunday a £2.10 all day

charge would apply. Similar charges are set to be introduced at Buntingford’s Bowling Green Lane facility.

Bishop’s Stortford

In Bishop’s Stortford, some of the under-used disabled bays on the ground floor of Northgate End car park would be converted to parent and child bays.

At Grange Paddocks A, where allday parking is currently offered, an additional 2.5 hour option is being introduced to encourage the turnover of spaces while the operational hours of car parks B and C would be extended until 8pm to better manage demand during peak leisure times.

Ware

In Ware, Kibes Lane North and South would be merged into a single Kibes Lane car park. This would remove the long stay option currently available in Kibes Lane South, introducing a maximum stay of five hours Monday to Saturday, and with an all-day charge kept on Sundays and public holidays. The Library car park would be renamed Burgage Lane with a three hour maximum stay introduced.

A new three hour limit would be introduced on free parking for blue badge holders in all car parks to encourage the turnover of spaces.

And, separate from the proposed changes, the plans will see car parking charges raised in all car parks from April 2026 in line with inflation.

East Herts’ Executive Member for Environmental Sustainability, Cllr Tim Hoskin, said: “We know that introducing weekend charges in Sawbridgeworth and Buntingford won’t be welcomed by everyone.

Unfortunately the council has very few ways to raise the money needed to keep services running, and at the moment we’re covering the cost of parking in these places at the weekends. Bringing operational hours in line with our other rural car park

in Stanstead Abbotts will help us manage this more fairly, which is a key principle of our agreed parking strategy.”

He said he was especially keen to hear from the disabled community about the blue badge proposals to understand the impact they might have before making a final decision. Posters highlighting all the changes are being displayed in car parks. The online consultation is available at yourvoice.eastherts.gov.uk/ parking-changes until Thursday 6th November.

Any changes approved for progression would be introduced in early April 2026.

Local motor dealership to lease top floor of under-used car park

In separate news, it looks as though the council has found an imaginative way to generate income from its unpopular Northgate End car park in Bishop’s Stortford.

The car park was built by the previous Conservative administration but motorists have been reluctant to use it and revenues have been far short of predictions.

Last month local agents Coke Gearing were advertising the top floor

of the car park for rent at a cost of £60,000 per annum.

The council has since confirmed that an agreement has been reached with local motor dealership Glyn Hopkin to occupy the space. While the council would not disclose financial information it said it would be an annual rolling arrangement.

Its Executive Member for Environmental Sustainability, Cllr Tim Hoskin, said: “This arrangement

means the space will be put to good use ahead of the expected rise in parking demand from the Old River Lane development.

“It also supports a valued local business and helps deter the kind of anti-social behaviour that can occur in unused areas.

“Importantly, it also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to generating income wherever possible to help sustain local services.”

Fees will rise amid a raft of other changes proposed for East Herts car parks

Famous Crews Hill garden centres could make way for new town

The Government’s New Towns Taskforce has recommended the Crews Hill and Chase Park areas of Enfield as the site for a potential new town of up to 21,000 homes. In the way that the post-war new towns building programme saw new communities built at Harlow, Stevenage and Milton Keynes, the development of large, new sustainable communities is once again seen as a way of addressing the country’s current housing shortage and boosting economic growth.

And shortly after winning power in July 2024 the incoming Labour Government established the taskforce to identify specific locations that could be suitable.

The taskforce reported back at the end of this September with a shortlist of 12 potential new town sites which, it said, were ones with a degree of local support and landowners, developers, councils and others ready to welcome a new town.

Enfield Council, which welcomed the taskforce’s recommendation, has already identified the two areas in its emerging local plan as providing around 9,000 new homes. For this to happen land would need

to be removed from the green belt and at Crews Hill some businesses, including in the horticultural golden mile along Theobalds Park Road and Cattlegate Road, would need to relocate to make way for new neighbourhoods.

The taskforce says with new town designation Crews Hill and Chase Park could be developed at an even larger scale and pace.

In its response to the taskforce report the Government said all of the recommended locations had

the clear potential to deliver on its objectives “with Tempsford, Crews Hill and Leeds South Bank looking particularly promising as sites that might make significant contributions to unlocking economic growth and accelerating housing delivery.”

Further assessment work will be undertaken before a final decision on the Government’s preferred locations is announced next Spring, with an intention to get spades in the ground on at least three new towns by the end of the Parliament.

Greater Anglia rail service nationalised

Greater Anglia became the third of the country’s rail operators to be nationalised in October under Government plans that will ultimately see one company, Great British Railways, responsible for all rail services and infrastructure.

When this happens, it says, passengers will no longer need to navigate 14 separate train operators but simply be able to use ‘the railway’, travelling on GBR trains, running on GBR tracks and working to a GBR timetable – run by a single body focused on their interests.

Following on from South Western Railway’s transfer into public ownership on 25th May, and c2c’s services on 20th July, Greater Anglia services transferred at 2am on Sunday 12th October.

The company operates commuter and intercity services in the East Anglia region with the London

Liverpool Street to Cambridge route and Hertford East branch line being widely used by commuters in the Axis coverage area. It also operates the Stansted Express.

Previously under the stewardship of parent company Transport UK, Greater Anglia entered public ownership in good shape as one of the UK’s best performing operators. It has been the UK’s most punctual operator for more than two and a

Consultations being held on latest plans for Old River Lane site

Developer Cityheart is holding a number of community events this month to update the public on its plans for Bishop’s Stortford’s Old River Lane site.

The company is East Herts Council’s development partner and is set to deliver new homes and commercial premises for cafés, shops and businesses on the former Causeway car park and Charringtons House office site close to Waitrose.

It held a number of consultation events on its proposals back in June and now, ahead of an anticipated planning application being made in December, is hosting two more meetings to update the public.

173 new homes, including affordable homes, are planned as well as a new access road for Waitrose, improved cycle and walking routes and a new public square.

The events are on Tuesday 4th November between 3.30pm and 7pm at Bishop’s Stortford Library and on Saturday 8th November from 10am to 1pm next to Starbucks in the main mall of Jackson Square Shopping Centre.

Information will also be shared at oldriverlanedevelopment.co.uk.

half years, secured Passenger Operator of the Year at the National Rail Awards three times in four years, and this year swept the board at the other main rail industry awards. A transition to new trains on every service with more seats, air conditioning, wi-fi, plug points and USB points was completed in April 2023 while station facilities have also been enhanced across the network in recent years.

No more encores for Standon Calling

Music festival Standon Calling has been cancelled for good after the company behind it went into liquidation. The outdoor festival had been held 17 times since 2003 but financial problems have dogged it in recent years and it last took place in 2023. Famous acts to have played in the past included Florence and the Machine and Charlie XCX.

Crews Hill, famous for its garden centres, could become the site of a new town

Deadline set for County Hall bids

Bidders looking to acquire County Hall, the landmark former home of Hertfordshire County Council, have until 12noon on Thursday 4th December to submit their offers.

The 25-and-a-half-acre site off Pegs Lane which includes the original grade 2* listed County Hall building itself, along with its grade 2 registry block, modern extensions, surrounding land and multi-storey car park is now being marketed for sale on behalf of the council by agents Savills and Walter Cooper Surveyors. The site has been marketed previously, after the council’s former Conservative administration decided to move services and staff to its Stevenage campus.

Then, the intention had been to retain the front part of the building for civic purposes and to sell the remainder of the site with a stipulation that it be retained for employment purposes.

But after this failed to attract suitable bidders the newly elected Liberal Democrat administration decided in July to instead sell the whole site. This would increase its potential sale value and save money

that would otherwise need to be spent separating the front part of the building from the rest of the site, and upkeeping it.

With the previous marketing having failed to yield any viable employment use for the site, the council is now considering offers from potential buyers who may want to redevelop it for residential or commercial use – or both. The marketing brochure describes the site as a “significant redevelopment/refurbishment opportunity” with information available to interested parties suggesting (subject to planning) all number of potential

future uses that include residential (that could be a mix of conversion and new build), retirement or care, educational or hotel use.

Offers are being invited on either an unconditional or subject to planning basis.

The council would hope to identify a preferred purchaser by April 2026. If an offer conditional on gaining planning consent is accepted it would be likely to take until close to the end of 2028 for this to be achieved and a sale would be likely to be completed in February 2029. An offer without conditions would result in an earlier sale.

Latest forecast shows East Herts Council is facing a £789,000 budget shortfall this year

Latest forecasting shows East Herts Council is facing a budget shortfall of £789,000 for the 2025/6 financial year – with the largest contributing factor to this being a lower than anticipated income from its Hertford-based theatre venue, BEAM. Also adding to the forecast shortfall is a higher than anticipated business rates bill for its own properties (which it is appealing), loss of rent at investment property Rapier House in Ware, costs of maintenance and security at unsold flats built at Northgate End in Bishop’s Stortford and a lack of council tax revenues from them, plus lower than expected parking revenues. The council has to balance its books each year and so regularly reviews its performance against forecasts. The latest picture was presented to the council’s leading executive group on Tuesday 7th October by

Executive Member for Financial Sustainability Cllr Carl Brittain. BEAM, which opened last August, is the redeveloped Hertford Theatre which now has a larger auditorium, studio theatre and three cinema screens. The aim was to see it go from a position of reliance on council funding to making a positive contribution with the last prediction being that it would generate a £200,000 surplus this financial year. Cllr Brittain’s report shows that, based on Quarter One figures, it would be predicted to be £270,000 away from achieving this – ie in-

Tewinbury owners take over Hertford House

The Williams family, owners of farm and hotel Tewinbury near Welwyn have announced their acquisition of Hertford House Hotel and the adjoining The Quiet Man pub on the edge of Fore Street and Parliament Square.

The Hertford House Hotel building was once home to the town’s local newspaper the Hertfordshire Mercury. Along with The Quiet Man, it had been operated for many years by members of the local Shipton family. The hotel occupies the upper floors of both Georgian townhouse buildings with 28 bedrooms. On the ground floor of Hertford House is a 60-cover restaurant.

The Williams family said: “This is a new chapter for our family farm and we are excited to share it with the town we grew up in.”

stead costing the council £70,000. The meeting heard that £184,000 of the predicted shortfall was due to delays in recruiting a chef and launching a food offering. Ticket sales are predicted to be £47,000 lower than anticipated, membership sales £22,000 lower, and utilities costs £32,000 higher.

However, councillors heard that a decision to delay introducing a food offering had been a deliberate one, designed to ensure all other aspects of the theatre were running successfully.

It is now up and running, and along with new director Steve Sergeant and his team settled in and strong programming in place (several shows have already been sell-outs), plus a traditionally busy time of year for theatres approaching, the picture at the end of the financial year is likely to be different.

Ware would you like to see public toilets?

Ware Town Council is reviewing the provision of public toilets in the town, with an online survey asking residents and visitors what facilities they would like to see provided, and where. It asks how often respondees use existing facilities, how they rate them, if they’d like to see additional toilets provided and if so, where these ought to be sited. It also asks if people would be prepared to pay a small charge to use clean and well maintained facilities.

The survey, which can be found online at waretowncouncil.gov.uk, closes at 11.59pm on Sunday 30th November.

BLACK FRIDAY CLEARANCE FURNITURE EVENT

County wants your views on how to save money on recycling centres

Hertfordshire County Council is asking residents for their views on a number of cost saving ideas that it is considering introducing to its recycling centre service.

The consultation, which is open until Friday 28th November, is seeking opinions on three options:

l Introducing measures to restrict access to those who shouldn’t be using them, including non-residents, businesses and traders;

l Applying a charge for excess DIY waste;

l No longer accepting any unsorted residual waste.

The council provides 16 recycling centres and five reuse shops across the county at a cost of around £13million per year. But the service is under pressure from rising costs, visitor numbers, commercial waste abuse and new rules and regulations for operation.

The new Liberal Democrat administration scrapped previous plans from its predecessor to reduce operating days at four centres and introduce a booking system for all visits but must find other ways to ensure the service is sustainable. Restricting access would be likely

to involve the introduction of a scheme similar to that operated by other councils whereby residents who pay council tax in their area register for an e-pass, lasting several years, which gives them free access to centres.

Current legislation only allows a small volume of DIY waste from home improvements to be taken to recycling centres and already, where this is exceeded, residents are directed to the chargeable waste service at Ware or Welwyn.

The second option could see centres allowing residents to bring volumes of DIY waste that exceeds the free limit to any centre but only if this excess is paid for.

The final option would be for centres to refuse to accept unsorted residual waste. A study of residual waste containers at recycling centres found that around 60% of the contents were actually recyclable – ie clothing, plastic and cardboard.

The survey is at hertfordshire.gov.uk under the ‘Consultations’ link.

The Spotlight in Hoddesdon cancels its Snow White panto

The Spotlight theatre in Hoddesdon has, “with great sadness” announced that it has cancelled its planned panto, Snow White, this December due to what it described

as “logistical and operational circumstances beyond our control”. All ticketholders will be contacted to arrange refunds, said the venue, which has quickly arranged a

packed programme of Christmas shows instead. For details of the new shows coming up, and to book tickets, visit its website, thespotlightvenue.com.

Shoplifting up by 13% in Hertfordshire

Retail trade union Usdaw says it is concerned by new police recorded crime statistics that show that in the year to June there were increases in shoplifting across the East of England. It said that in the whole of England and Wales there has been a trend of persistent quarterly increases, with incidents now having more than doubled since the pandemic.

The Office for National Statistics figures, which were released on Thursday 23rd October,

show shoplifting incidents in the Hertfordshire Constabulary area have risen by 13% and in Essex by 19%.

Rises were 37% in Bedfordshire, 11% in Cambridgeshire, 23% in Norfolk and 7% in Suffolk.

Joanne Thomas, Usdaw general secretary, said: “The scale of the epidemic of retail crime is laid bare in these police recorded crime statistics for the East of England. While the rate of increase across England

and Wales has slowed since it peaked at 37% at the end of 2023, the fact is retail crime continues to rise.

“Usdaw’s last survey found that this is in no way a victimless crime, with two-thirds of attacks on retail staff being triggered by theft or armed robbery. Having to deal with repeated and persistent offences can cause issues beyond the theft itself, like anxiety, fear and physical harm to retail workers.”

Dame Foodie Dench coming to a street near you...

While there might have been some early frustrations with East and North Herts councils’ recently introduced new waste and recycling service, its vehicles are set to bring a smile to faces this autumn.

Over the summer residents were invited to submit names for the shared service’s collection vehicles with more than 700 entries received and the winning names revealed at the end of October.

Keep an eye out for Dame Foodie Dench, Tin Can Sally, Optimus Grime and Ricky Gerwaste among the many others coming to a street near you.

Meanwhile, a detailed report on the roll-out of the new service is set to be presented to East Herts Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday 4th November.

The councils says all households should now have the bins they require for the new service. To report an issue visit eastherts.gov.uk and click on Bins, Waste and Recycling.

We need an assessment system that values creativity, resilience and emotional wellbeing

Leading the debate on Assessment Reform

Last month, I led a debate in Parliament calling for urgent reform of our assessment system. No child should be left struggling with their mental health because of exams, and wellbeing and academic success should not be at odds. I urged the Government to use the Independent Curriculum and Assessment Review as a chance to embrace ambitious reform. We need an assessment system that values creativity, resilience and emotional wellbeing, not just exam results. It’s time to build a system fit for the 21st century, where wellbeing and achievement go hand in hand.

Meeting young leaders at Hollybush School

It was a pleasure to visit Hollybush School in Hertford for their School Election results, following my visit in September to launch the School Council.

It was great to see so much excitement and enthusiasm from the pupils, with many putting themselves forward for the council. Huge congratulations to everyone who took part as well as all the staff who made it happen.

I look forward to coming back and seeing how their ideas and voices shape the school community.

Celebrating Community with I Love Hertford

Back in Westminster, I had the pleasure of welcoming Dan from I Love Hertford to Parliament.

Dan does amazing work celebrating the people and places that make Hertford such a special place to live. His passion for our community and dedication to bringing people together is inspiring. A huge thank you to Dan for all that he does to foster pride and connection in Hertford.

Broadening opportunity for young people

I also attended the Generation Hertford careers fair, which brought together Year 10 and Year 13 students with local businesses offering apprenticeships and other post-16 opportunities.

Not every young person sees university as the right path, and it’s vital we support diverse routes into fulfilling careers.

Events like this help students explore real-world options and connect with employers who value their potential.

YOUR MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR BROXBOURNE WRITES FOR AXIS MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH

With Remembrance Sunday coming up, we should never take our armed forces for granted

When we’ve done it all our lives, the act of wearing a poppy each November can become almost routine, and it can be easy to forget its true meaning.

I’ve always been a proud supporter of our armed forces and have never failed to participate in local Remembrance events.

But I have recognised that, apart from what we all see on the news, my knowledge of military life is quite limited.

Since I was elected, I’ve been determined to avoid getting stuck behind a desk in Westminster and to get out into the real world as much as possible – so I can find out what’s really going on and be the best representative in Parliament I can. With that in mind, I jumped at the chance to take part in the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme when an opportunity came up this summer. MPs are often required to vote on serious matters affecting the military, and the scheme provides a unique insight into what is required to serve in one of the three branches of the armed forces.

It was really difficult to choose just one of the three branches to experience, but in the end I decided to pick the Royal Air Force course. Don’t get me wrong, this was not a holiday!

Our first experience was a two-day, hands-on course at Shrivenham Defence Academy, learning about the structure and organisation of

Defence in the UK – with early starts and several uniform inspections! Next up was a trip to RAF Valley on Anglesey, which is usually home to those operating search and rescue missions or training to be fighter pilots. We were able to meet some of the pilots and have a go on a simulator. I am proud to say I was one of the MPs who didn’t end up crashing any virtual aircraft!

Over the next few months, I’ll be diving deeper into areas like airborne intelligence and the RAF’s cyber capabilities as I continue to strengthen my understanding of the military and incorporate this into my work in Parliament.

On Remembrance Sunday later this month, wreaths will be placed on my behalf across the Broxbourne constituency while I

will be personally attending the service in Goffs Oak.

As we all stand in silence to remember all who have served our country, this year, I’ll be doing so with my own glimpse into the armed services fresh in my mind and a better understanding of the sacrifices and selfless commitment that service personnel are making every day to keep us safe.

Win wine for your festive table with Cavavin

It may only just be November but if you’re entertaining this Christmas chances are you’ve already ordered your turkey and booked your supermarket delivery slot.

It’s also the perfect time to seek out the wines to accompany your Christmas lunch and to keep the cheer flowing throughout the wider festive season.

Don’t let supermarket offers (which

have already begun in earnest) dictate what you buy this year. Independent wine merchants consistently offer much nicer wines for the same price and for £10-£15 you’ll find bottles that taste great and don’t break the bank.

Chateau Haut-Terrier Blaye Cotes de Bordeaux Rouge 2019 £15

On cold winter nights, comforting full-bodied reds like this one are always a treat. Chateau Haut-Terrier is composed entirely of Merlot grown on the right bank of the Gironde River in Bordeaux. It exhibits smooth, deep, and rich flavours of plum and blackberry with a gently spiced edge, and makes for a satisfying glass that will easily keep up with Christmas dinner.

Arton Cotes de Gascogne ‘Les Cedres’ Blanc Moelleux 2016 £14.50 ‘Moelleux’ translates directly as ‘soft’, and indicates that a wine will be sweet, though not quite as much as other dessert wines. With an inviting golden colour, careful balance, and flavours of stewing apricot and quince overlaid by blossom, this truly delicious wine best accompanies desserts, pates, and in particular, salty and pungent cheeses. An under-appreciated gem from the southwesternmost corner of France.

Author Adam sets his new children’s book for Christmas in Hertford

Hertford-based author Adam Lancaster has captured the spirit of community and resilience, allied with a touch of festive magic, in his new children’s novel, The First Light.

It is a tale that has been inspired by the county town’s small, independent shops and the people who bring the high street to life.

Set in a semi-fictionalised version of Hertford, The First Light follows 12-year-old Sam Taylor as he grapples with grief, hope and a race against time to restore his town’s Christmas spirit after a devastating storm. When the town’s beloved bandstand is destroyed, Sam rallies neighbours, shopkeepers and new friends to create something magical, a Christmas trail that winds through the local shops and streets of the town, lighting up more than just buildings.

The book features local landmarks and indie shops, celebrating the vital role small businesses play in shaping the town’s character.

Adam, who was born and raised

in Hertford, is a librarian, reading teacher and literacy advisor with a passion for helping young people unlock the power of stories, He said of The First Light: “This book is my love letter to Hertford. It’s about how communities come together after hardship, and how the smallest acts of kindness can spark something extraordinary.”

Adam describes it as “a perfect read for children aged around 9-12, families and adult fans of Hertford looking for a story full of warmth, hope and the magic of Christmas”.

Adam is also the author of the forthcoming series The Nexus Chronicles, of which the first book, The Secrets of Elderscribe, is set to launch in 2026. The fantasy series explores hidden libraries, ancient knowledge and the battle to protect stories themselves.

Wood Bros announces sponsorship of Ware Choral Society

When Ware Choral Society musical director Rosie Howarth visited the furniture showrooms of Wood Bros in Ware recently she was genuinely surprised by how responsive inanimate furniture could be to her persuasion!

All a bit of fun, of course, but symbolic of the fusion between the worlds of furniture production and choral music represented by the sponsorship agreement between the society and Wood Bros made last month.

The benefit to the choir is fairly obvious. Putting on concerts with professional soloists and orchestras is an expensive business, and in balancing the books there is only so much that can be asked of audiences and members in ticket prices and subscriptions. The financial contribution that a commercial family

company is able to make can make all the difference.

For Wood Bros, the benefits are also clear. It promotes their large and inspirational Ware showroom as well as raising the company profile to a wider audience.

Their reputation has been built up by producing furniture and upholstery of the highest quality since 1924, but making really good furniture is about more than technical and material excellence – it’s about craftsmanship.

By showing they want to be associated with an organisation that seeks to bring joy and inspiration to the local community, Wood Bros are looking to emphasise their wish to be part of that community, and the difference that beautiful furniture can make to the lives of people using it.

A new chapter for Link Digital: Hertford Mayor opens new offices

After months of planning and transformation, digital marketing agency Link Digital has officially opened the doors to its new purpose-built Hertford offices in Mead Lane, marking an exciting new chapter for the growing business.

Cllr Steven Watson, the Mayor of Hertford, cut the ribbon and shared in the celebrations on Tuesday 14th October.

From ‘bursting at the seams’ to ‘room to grow’

What began in 2013 as a small team with big ambitions has grown into a thriving agency working with a wide range of clients. As the team expanded, so did the need for a workspace that matched the business’s creativity and collaboration. Its old office had been, in Managing Director Mark Smith’s words, ‘bursting at the seams’. So, when the opportunity arose to convert an unused warehouse into a modern, lightfilled office for up to 30 people, he seized it.

More than just a building

MD Mark said: “Our new office isn’t just about space. it’s about culture. Designed with collaboration, comfort and creativity in mind, it provides our team with an inspiring environment to produce their best work. Every detail reflects who we are: a forward-thinking, people-first digital agency dedicated to helping businesses grow online through

design, marketing and smart digital solutions.”

A seal of local approval

The Mayor’s attendance made the day even more meaningful. He praised Link Digital as “a great example of the kind of forward thinking, creative business that keeps our local economy strong,” adding that the expansion “is not only a success story for Link Digital, but for Hertford as a whole.”

Celebrating and giving back

Mark Smith added: “Hertford has been home to us since day one, and we are proud to continue investing locally, developing local talent and contributing to the community that helped us thrive.

“The grand opening was celebrated with clients, partners, and friends – a fantastic opportunity to showcase the new space and say thank you to those who’ve supported us.

“As part of our commitment to the local business community, we’ve also created a dedicated training facility equipped with the latest tech, where we’ll be offering free marketing training sessions to help local businesses boost their digital presence.

“Here’s to new beginnings, more creativity, and a bright future in Hertford.”

Choosing a new bathroom involves first understanding your bathing needs – and there are several options to consider when deciding to alter your bathroom. One option is to replace your bath with a low-level shower –this is suited to those with limited mobility and who struggle to step into a traditional bath. Slip-resistant shower trays are available in various sizes, and accessories like shower seats mean you can relax and let the water wash over you.

Grab rails provide further safety and they come in a variety of modern designs, so they won’t make your bathroom feel clinical. However, if you prefer having a bath to a shower so you could consider a walk-in bath. These are available in various sizes and come with moulded seats (sometimes heated), quick fill and drain options and some even have jacuzzi functions to help ease aches and pains.

The third option is a wet room, which eliminates obstacles with slip-resistant flooring and a central drain. This makes a wet room ideal for wheelchair users and care-givers. However, they can be more costly. It can be overwhelming knowing which solution to choose but AHM Installations have a friendly team of home surveyors who will visit you at home to discuss your bathing needs. They provide free quotations and visuals of how your new bathroom could look. AHM believe everyone should have access to safe, affordable bathing so they will always find a bathing solution to meet your needs and your budget. Call their customer care team on 01992 874391 to request a brochure or to find out more.

Dobsons celebrates 90 years as a family-run business

Dobsons, a long established family business based in Cheshunt, has celebrated a major milestone – the company’s 90th anniversary. It was a double celebration as this year the family also marked the 90th birthday of the founder’s son, Paul Dobson. To celebrate, three generations of the Dobson family held an open day at its newly renovated Cheshunt showroom. The guests of honour were Paul Dobson and the Mayor of Broxbourne, Cllr Patsy Spears. They were joined by past and present customers who were treated to live cooking demonstrations by Siemens, a cake decorating masterclass, a prize draw and close-up magic. Director Helen Dobson said: “It truly is incredible to be celebrating 90 years of Dobsons. I feel very proud to be able to enjoy this moment with my team and alongside my family. Thank you to everyone who came and celebrated with us. Next stop 100!”

Father Christmas Parade one of the highlights of Hoddesdon’s biggest and best event of the year

Clear your diaries now for Hoddesdon Loves Christmas – widely acknowledged as one of Hertfordshire’s best festive events, which this year takes place on Sunday 30th November.

Organised by Love Hoddesdon BID in partnership with Broxbourne Council, the day-long event takes over the whole of the town centre and attracts crowds of thousands of people from 10am to the end of festivities at around 6pm.

During the day, the High Street is filled with stalls of all types offering Christmas shopping and food and drink, while a stage sponsored by Nonna’s Kitchen has a non-stop roster of live entertainment, including dancing, singing and music compered brilliantly as ever by Nonna’s Dean Martin. Other attractions include a snow globe which will be overseen and sponsored for the first time this year by local solicitors Duffield Harrison, and Santa’s Grotto inside Hoddesdon Library between 11am and 2pm.

The highlight of the day is the Father Christmas Parade, a traditional winter carnival-style procession of floats that sees thousands line the streets to see it process through the High Street from 4.45pm. After this, there is a countdown to the Christmas lights switch-on at the stage by the clocktower just before 6pm, followed by a fireworks display over the town to round off the day. See you there!

Stephen Harris, This Is Your Life...

One of the features that makes Love Hoddesdon stand out among the 300-plus BIDs around the country is its incredibly dedicated force of volunteers, marshalled for many years now by the BID’s Events and Promotions Chair Stephen Harris. Every two years, Stephen organises a special event to say thankyou to the volunteers, without whose selfless dedication to the town many of the big events the BID helps to organise simply would not be able to take place.

But last month Stephen was stunned to find himself on the receiving end of a huge surprise thank-you from the volunteers for all the work he does for the town.

Stephen was in the middle of giving a Saturday evening talk about Love Hoddesdon at Rye Park Conservative Club, which recently joined the BID as an Associate Member, when he was stopped in his tracks.

At that moment, members of his family and Master Henry Hoddas, the Love Hoddesdon mascot, came in just as he was presented with a This Is Your Life-style big red book, trophy and certificate from the volunteers to mark his years organising the town centre events for the BID.

The Mayor of Broxbourne, Cllr Patsy Spears, was also on hand to make the presentation to an unusually speechless Mr Harris!

Presented by The Barn Theatre Club, and directed by Steve Thompson, The Children’s Hour is an acclaimed play that was ahead of its time, set in 1934 in New England, USA, where two inspiring young teachers, Karen Wright and Martha Dobie, run a boarding school for girls. A disaffected young student – Mary Tilford (played by Alex Kennedy) – runs away from the school and, to avoid being sent back, she makes up a lie about her teachers, falsely claiming that Karen and Martha are having a sexual relationship. The accusation destroys the school and the lives of everyone in it. Performances are at 8pm with a matinée on Saturday 22nd at 2.30pm. Turkish Kitchen celebrates its 10th birthday

November marks ten years since Turkish Kitchen first opened its doors in Hertford – and the team are ready to celebrate!

The popular restaurant is one of a small family of eateries, with Hertford’s original opening later joined by branches in nearby Hatfield and slightly farther afield in Peterborough and Brentwood, and each bringing a true taste of Turkey to your table.

At Turkish Kitchen, authenticity is everything. From homemade yoghurt, cheese, hummus, taramasalata and falafel to the freshly-baked bread and slow-cooked meats, dishes on the traditional

menu use ingredients sourced from Turkish Kitchen’s very own local farm near Hertford. The menu includes traditional favourites with a long list of appetisers such as Halloumi and mushroom, and Pan-fried chicken liver. For mains, you can select from choices from the charcoal grill, yoghurt dishes, fish including sea bass, grilled salmon or monkfish kebab, steaks, vegetarian and house specials including casseroles. There are also dishes for the kids, ranging from a lamb or chicken shish to chicken wings, chicken nuggets and even a burger.

Of course, Turkish cuisine is enjoying a hugely successful time in the UK at present, and Turkish Kitchen’s Catalina Dragan explained why she thinks that is. She said: “What makes Turkish cuisine so popular is its ability to bring people together, with the rich aromas of grilled meats, the delicate balance of spices, the freshness of herbs and the warmth that fills every meal. And at Turkish Kitchen, whether you’re here for a family dinner, a romantic evening or a friendly gathering, our team welcomes you like family.”

So, with Christmas on the hori-

zon, why not start the celebrations now and mark the 10th birthday of Turkish Kitchen in Hertford this month?

Acclaimed duo take the helm at The Two Brewers in Northaw

A new chapter has begun for Northaw’s The Two Brewers pub, now under the stewardship of award-winning publican Tom Arnold and highly acclaimed head chef Paul Cooke.

The pair have partnered with the owners of the 16th century property, Wells & Co, to re-open the pub at the heart of the village. With a focus on elevated food and hospitality the aim is to make it a destination for locals and the wider community.

Tom brings with him a wealth of experience as the driving force behind the successful Burleigh Arms in Cambridge, which earned a spot in the Estrella Damm Top 100 Gastropubs in the UK within its first year. Alongside this national recognition is a host of regional accreditations and acknowledgements, cementing the Burleigh Arms’s reputation as one of the pub and dining destinations in Cambridgeshire.

Joining him at the helm is head chef Paul Cooke, whose impressive culinary pedigree includes roles at several high-end pubs and Michelin-starred kitchens across the UK, including The Hand and

Flowers in Marlow, The Plough in Sleapshyde and Thompson in St Albans.

A full-scale refurbishment of The Two Brewers is scheduled for the summer of 2026.

In the meantime new bar, a la carte and Sunday roast menus have launched with a la carte options including Halibut in a chicken butter sauce served with potato terrine, sweetcorn, leek and BBQ mushrooms; Ding-

ley Dell pork accompanied by Maitake, black garlic and apple; and a Steak option for two, served with triple cooked chips and Caesar salad.

Tom said: “The Two Brewers is a beautiful pub with so much potential. Our aim is to create a space that locals can be genuinely proud of – somewhere you can pop in for a pint, but also bring friends and family for an exceptional meal.”

The Two Brewers is open from Tuesday to Sunday with food served from Wednesday to Sunday. You can find all the opening hours on the website.

TWO QUICK SURPRISE BLOWS FOR THE FOOD AND DRINK SCENE IN BISHOP’S STORTFORD

The Bishop’s Stortford branch of Thai restaurant chain Giggling Squid has closed suddenly. Giggling Squid opened in Bishop’s Stortford’s North Street in December 2018 but the premises were cleared on Monday 29th September with a message posted online announcing the closure which, it said, had been “a difficult decision”. No reasons have been given for the closure.

The company said it had loved being part of the local community and would miss its “wonderful guests” who were advised that

other Giggling Squid restaurants located nearby include Welwyn Garden City, Brentwood, Billericay, Chelmsford and Harpenden. Lovers of Thai food in Bishop’s Stortford are still catered for by the independent Baan Thitiya in the town’s London Road.

A further blow to the town was news that upmarket bakery chain Gail’s would not be moving forward with plans, revealed earlier in the year, to open in the former Halifax premises in the Corn Exchange building in Market Square.

The company had secured planning permission in the spring for internal works to the former bank building, paving the way for reopening as a bakery and café. However, another application seeking permission to fix six of the company’s recognisable red awnings above windows on

the east and south facades of the grade 2 listed building was later withdrawn.

The chain has not given a reason for its decision but a spokesperson told Axis: “We can confirm that at this time, Gail’s is not moving forward with this site.”

Christmas at Pircio: a great venue for friends and family

If you are looking for a local restaurant for a Christmas gathering which puts family at the heart of everything it does, then book Pircio in Bishop’s Stortford. This family-run restaurant is based in the town’s historic Drill Hall building.

It is an excellent place to go if you want to celebrate: beautifully designed and cleverly thought out, so that you feel happy and at home here wherever you are seated. The owners have pulled off a difficult trick – making what is in reality a large, cavernous building seem much smaller and more intimate.

And it’s not just the stunning interior design that is welcoming – the staff here give fast, efficient service with a smile.

When it opened nine years ago, Pircio began with a bold and unusual strategy – that of running full and extensive menus from two cuisines side by side.

One side of the menu offered Italian food, the other side Turkish. They still do it. And it not only works but it gives Pircio that point of difference that helps keep its regulars coming back time and again.

There are also different menus for lunch and dinner, there is a kids’

menu, a gluten-free menu, plus the drinks list and separate cocktail menu… this is truly a place where you are spoilt for choice, as well as just spoilt.

Christmas menus

Pircio’s Christmas menus have just been released – there are two available, both with a wide range of choices for starter, main and dessert.

Christmas Menu One offers three courses for £55 and Menu Two has three courses for £50 –both offer a reception drink for another £5.

The menus feature a selection of

both Italian and Turkish dishes which will be enough to offer something for everyone, from the classic chicken shish kebab to grilled salmon or the Pizze Pircio to a spicy prawns pot among the main courses for example.

You can see full details of both menus, as well as the à la carte menu which is also available throughout the festive period, online at pirciorestaurant.com.
