Lea Wharf: Apartments set to launch soon as new images show more detail of how landmark Hertford town centre development will look Chase New Homes’ ongoing transformation of the former Bircherley Green shopping centre site in Hertford into Lea Wharf, a mixed use development of homes, shops and restaurants, continues to progress well, with the developer about to launch the 98 apartments in the scheme onto the market.

Lanes Exclusive Homes, which is based within the town, will be marketing and selling the one and two bedroom properties, which are likely to be popular both with local homebuyers and also with buyers looking to move out of London while retaining the ability to commute easily via the town’s local transport links.

In keeping with the wharf-style feel of the riverside development, all apartments will have exposed brick feature walls.

There’s also a residents’ roof terrace and concierge service.

Meanwhile, the commercial side of the development is progressing to plan too.

The new buildings will offer a mix of retail and leisure units. Lettings have so far been agreed on all three of the available riverside restaurant/bar units as well as

Broxbourne reminds residents to look after animals during fireworks parties Broxbourne Council is calling on its residents to help make bonfire night more tolerable for pets and vulnerable people.

The local authority is supporting the #BangOutOfOrder campaign from the RSPCA which encourages local communities to be more aware of the impact fireworks have on animals and, where they are planning events, to warn others in advance so that they can prepare.

With more and more public event cancellations and after last year’s lockdown, 2021 is expected to see more people holding private displays.

The RSPCA warns it’s not just pets that get scared by loud noises and flashes of bright light – farm animals can be spooked into injuring themselves on fencing and farm equipment while wildlife, like hedgehogs, are at risk of

being burnt alive after making their homes in wood piled up for bonfires.

Back in July, a motion proposed by Cllr Linda Russell was passed committing Broxbourne to raising awareness of the impact of fireworks on animals and vulnerable people, requiring all public displays to be advertised in advance of the event, and encouraging local suppliers to stock ‘quieter’ fireworks.

The council has written to business owners asking them to stock lower noise options that, while still providing flashes and whizzes, are quieter. In the longer term the council is also committed to writing to the Government urging it to introduce legislation to limit the maximum noise level of fireworks sold for private displays.

Olympians help mark opening of new Grange Paddocks leisure centre The new Grange Paddocks leisure centre in Bishop’s Stortford is now open, boasting a state of the art new fitness suite offering all the latest gym equipment as well as a host of other high quality indoor and outdoor facilities.

The new centre, off Rye Street, has been built by East Herts Council and is to be run in partnership with Everyone Active. It replaces the ageing former leisure centre which is set to be demolished.

The completion of works was marked with an opening weekend on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October which featured visits from Olympic medallist Colin Jackson, Commonwealth medallist and synchronised swimmer Adele Carlsen, London 2012 Olympian and synchronised swimmer Kate Skelton and freestyle swimmer, British record holder and former Olympian Grant Turner.

As well as the gym and two group fitness studios, the impressive new facilities include a 25m eight-lane competition pool, a teaching pool with moveable floor and a confidence pool with interactive water play features, plus seating for 200-plus spectators.

There’s a café offering drinks and snacks where seating will be extended to include an outdoor area in the summer months, and a community room which can also be hired for anything from club get-togethers to business meetings.

There are smart and spacious changing facilities for both the first floor fitness facilities and, separately, downstairs for the pools, as well as self-contained changing areas for a number of outdoor pitches which will eventually include an all-weather 3G pitch.

There’s a huge range of classes on offer – from swimming lessons for all ages to aqua aerobics, body balance, cycling, high intensity interval training (HIIT), yoga and Pilates with activities open to all.

There are a number of membership options for anyone visiting on a regular basis. But you don’t

have to become a member to enjoy the facilities – you can register for a free Everyone Active card and create a profile, which allows you to book swim sessions, fitness classes and gym sessions online or through the Everyone Active app.

Bridges named after Hoddesdon heroes

Air ambulance trust opens new airbase

Two of Hoddesdon’s local heroes have been recognised for their work in the community by having the town’s New River Bridge and Woollens Brook Footbridge named after them.

The Claire Bayless Bridge and the Debbie Pezzani Footbridge were officially named at a special event in Essex Road on 27th September.

Claire works at the town’s Morrison’s supermarket and is the store’s community champion. She was recognised for going above and beyond to help schools, care homes and families who were struggling during the Covid-19 pandemic. She is also a member of the Love Hoddesdon Business Improvement District team.

October saw the official opening of Essex and Herts Air Ambulance’s new airbase in North Weald.

The purpose-built facility will provide a base for both critical care and fundraising teams to work from.

A new hangar houses one of the charity’s two helicopters but also has space to accommodate both if necessary, for example when maintenance needs to be carried out; while the helipad has underground heating to keep it free of snow and ice so that it can be fully operational during the worst of the winter months.

The base also has a specially designed garage for two rapid response vehicles.

Debbie, who grew up in and around Broxbourne, co-founded the cancer charity Teens Unite in 2007. Since the start of the first lockdown more than 1,000 young people fighting cancer and its long-term effects have taken part in online activities that Debbie and the charity have hosted. l See page 11 for details of the charity’s new shop.

In addition to these spaces there are specific areas for training, mentoring, patient liaison and cross training with other emergency services as well as a new dedicated visitor centre so supporters who visit can learn more about the work of the charity.

Green Flags awarded to local parks in a year when open spaces have never been so popular – or vital

The River Lee Country Park and Rye House Gatehouse both retained their Green Flag status this year

The Green Flag awards, which recognise well managed parks and green spaces, have announced their 2021 winners which, once again, include a range of local venues.

Nine of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority’s open spaces, gardens and heritage sites, including Myddelton House Gardens in Enfield, Rye House Gatehouse in Hoddesdon, the River Lee Country Park stretching between Waltham Abbey and Broxbourne, and Gunpowder Park in Waltham Abbey retained their flags in this, the awards’ 25th anniversary year.

In addition, Myddelton House

Gardens also achieved a coveted Green Heritage Site Accreditation in recognition of the authority’s management of the historic venue.

In East Herts, The Ridgeway Local Park in Hertford and Southern Country Park in Bishop’s Stortford retained their flags.

And Broxbourne Council’s Top Field and Cozens Grove Local Nature Reserve, Cheshunt Park and Hoddesdon’s Barclay Park also retained flags.

In Harlow, there were repeat awards for council-managed Harlow Museum and Walled Gardens, Town Park and Parndon

Wood Nature Reserve.

Harlow Mill, which is managed by the Canal and River Trust, also achieved Green Flag status.

In pandemic times the area’s open spaces have never been more valued – and used. In the past year, visitor numbers across Lee Valley Regional Park Authority’s open spaces and gardens, which are free for the public to visit, rose by 4.3million to a huge 9.2million.

The Green Flag scheme is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Hertfordshire Archives open their doors to the public again Hertfordshire Archives have reopened their doors to the public after in-person visits were suspended during the pandemic.

The archives at County Hall in Pegs Lane, Hertford hold a vast collection of historical documents from the county and are popular with those tracing their family history as well as anyone carrying out research and creative projects.

As well as parish registers of baptisms, marriages and burials which are useful to those tracing their family trees, there is a vast collection of other historical documents giving insight into individuals, families and life in the wider county including books and pamphlets, cemetery and burial records, Census returns, hospital records, military records, photographs, illustrations and old newspapers among others.

HERTFORD CORN EXCHANGE TO OPEN ‘EARLY IN 2022’ The team that has taken over the running of Hertford’s iconic Corn Exchange music venue says delays with works to upgrade facilities mean that it will now reopen early in 2022.

The venue in Fore Street has not re-opened since lockdown was lifted, initially prompting concerns that the closure might be permanent – before an announcement that the team behind The Horn in St Albans and The Half Moon in Bishop’s Stortford were taking over and planning to reopen the doors this November.

However, last month they announced that to enable the installation of equipment and the upgrade of facilities to the standard they aspired to for the venue, the opening would need to be delayed until the new year.

WORK BEGINS ON NEW STORTFORD HIGH SCHOOL Construction work has officially started at the new site for Bishop’s Stortford High School in Whittington Way. The school is set to move from its current London Road site in Spring 2023.

The new school buildings are being funded by the sale of its current site for housing, together with an £11.2million grant from the Department for Education and further funding from Hertfordshire County Council.

The school will offer an expanded, modern learning environment with the potential to expand further in future to support the proposed scale of housing growth in the local area.

How Hertford Theatre continues to reach out to the local community while it is closed for its multi-million pound redevelopment

Rebecca Butcher, the theatre’s marketing and digital content lead, brings us the first in a series of regular updates in a new quarterly column Welcome to the first edition of a regular new column from Hertford Theatre!

I’ll be keeping you up to date with the progress of our Growth & Legacy Project and what else we’re currently up to whilst we’re without our own venue.

Hertford Theatre closed its doors in June ahead of a redevelopment project that will give us an even bigger and better facility. Whilst there is no definitive reopening date at this stage, we anticipate being back in business in Autumn 2023.

Planned as part of the £19.9million makeover are three new bespoke cinema screens which will allow new release films to be shown, an expanded auditorium space for large productions, new studio auditorium for smaller live acts and performances and a new riverside café bar.

While the building might be closed the theatre is aiming to remain at the heart of the local community, keeping everyone up to date with the progress of development works and hosting events and activities alongside partner organisations.

Building work is progressing Work on site continues and by the time you read this, the asbestos removal will have been completed, marking the beginning of another step in our redevelopment.

The team who’ve been working on this have been fantastic and we look forward to the next stage.

The funding enabled us to engage a consultant, Sharon Kanolik, to work with our associate artist Stuart Mullins to find out what the artistic needs and priorities of schools, pupils and teachers are.

Over the last few months they have consulted with schools across East Herts regarding young people’s health, wellbeing and learning and how Hertford Theatre can best respond to this in a post-pandemic world.

This year, we’re collaborating with Southern Maltings in Ware, which is a volunteer-led arts venue, and the award-winning theatre company Half A String to bring

our audiences a brand new, immersive theatre experience at Southern Maltings, based on and including Half A String’s enchanting show, Under the Frozen Moon.

You’ll be transported into a magical new world as soon you push open the door to Southern Maltings – expect ice, cosy knitwear and a dragon, before watching astonishing puppets come alive in a stunning production, complete with beautiful music and amazing and clever sets. There’s even a free, festive gift for all attending.

Enjoy a latte in the cells as Teens Unite launches shop and café in ex-police station Young person’s cancer charity Teens Unite has relocated its head office to the former police station in Hoddesdon where it will also open a new charity shop and café this month.

With an official opening planned for 10.30am on Monday 8th November, the new shop will stock new items of clothing and accessories from high street retailers, along with a selection of books.

In the depths of the former police station, use of which has been generously donated by a long-standing supporter, the Jailbreak Café will provide visitors with a unique experience letting them enjoy their coffee in the former cells!

The café will also be available to local businesses and networking groups to hold meetings, team building activities and events, both within this space and the former police interview rooms.

Teens Unite supports young people diagnosed with cancer to rebuild their lives or at the very

least to live with their diagnosis in the best possible way. The new initiative will generate income to support that work and to help fund the charity’s long-term plans to build the first retreat in England for young people fighting cancer within the borough of Broxbourne.

Hoddesdon prepares for the festive season Hoddesdon continues to bounce back from the pandemic, largely due to Love Hoddesdon BID, the company representing the business improvement district covering the town centre.

Footfall levels in the town are good, whilst the vacancy rate is less than 5%, which compares well with many neighbouring towns.

Recently the town hosted a threeday Charter Fair which brought a traditional funfair into the town centre. Whilst rain had an impact on the number of people who ventured out on the Saturday, the crowds came out with the good weather on both the Friday and Sunday and many people commented that the town was “buzzing”.

Plans are well advanced with the relevant organisations to return The Charter Fair

to an open-air remembrance parade and service on Sunday 14th November by the war memorial and various parts of the town will also be decorated.

Plans for the town’s Christmas event on Saturday 27th November are also well advanced, although it will be more low-key this year due to the need for Covid awareness, so there will not be a Father Christmas Parade.

The Hoddesdon Christmas Fayre Light Up, a joint event organised

by Love Hoddesdon and Broxbourne Council, will include a range of Christmas stalls, as well as children’s rides, throughout the day.

There will also be a programme of entertainments by the clocktower, kicking off with the Hertford Rock Choir at 11am and climaxing with the Christmas tree switch-on and laser light show between 5.30pm and 6pm.

in the town the weekend before Christmas, as well as a New Year’s Fair, whilst a publicity campaign will promote a “Tis the Season to Shop Local” message.

Over the past 118 years, St Elizabeth’s has grown and developed to include a non-maintained special school for both boarders and day students; a specialist further education college; domiciliary care for college learners; residential care with nursing for 102 adults across 13 purpose-built bungalows; a comprehensive day opportunities programme for residents and day clients and 24-hour health provision provided by specialist nurses and therapists.

The charity was previously one of the charitable works of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross of Liège, a Catholic religious congregation, that was founded in 1833 in Liège, Belgium.

On 1st October 2018, St Elizabeth’s became a charity in its own right, continuing the wonderful work established by the Daughters of the Cross of Liège over 100 years ago.

Hoddesdon-based housing association opens its 5,000th home on new development in its own home town

Broxbourne-based social business B3Living has opened its 5,000th home on the new Oaklands development, beside the New River in Hoddesdon.

Sir Charles Walker MP was joined by representatives from the housing association and Broxbourne Council to cut the ribbon and declare the homes officially open.

Sir Charles, MP for Broxbourne, said: “It was excellent to officially open these homes and celebrate this milestone for B3Living.

Not only is it encouraging to see new life brought to what was an underused space, homes like these are also providing a much-needed opportunity for local people to get on the ladder.”

The Oaklands development has

transformed a former industrial site into 60 new homes, including 24 for people on the council’s waiting list and a further 32 for sale through the shared ownership scheme. B3Living’s 5,000th home is among the first phase of the development, along with 16 shared ownership flats and houses, which were all reserved during their first weekend.

Jon Hayden, B3Living’s Executive Director for Development, said: “Hoddesdon is our home town, and we want to help local people to stay and build their lives here.

2021 marks the centenary of the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal and, following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, you will once again be able to buy a poppy and donate through on-street collectors this month.

Ware Town Council is hosting an Eco aWare Community Day at Ware Priory in High Street on Saturday 13th November. Taking place from 10am to 2pm, the free to attend event is designed to highlight the positive actions and changes people can make locally to help protect the planet and reverse the climate emergency.

The day will feature a number of mini presentations and speakers from Ware and around Herts on topics including garden biodiversity, beekeeping, community crowdfunding and ways you can make a difference.

Museum launches two new exhibitions Hertford Museum is hosting two new exhibitions. The first, A Stroll in the Country, features the watercolours of John Buckingham showing the rural past of St Albans, Hertfordshire’s only city. Buckingham lived from 1800-1881.

The second is called Dissent: Stories of Activism in Hertford, and chronicles activism from global campaigns to grass-roots dissent locally. The museum in is Bull Plain, Hertford SG14 1DT. Both exhibitions are free to drop in to.

Festive events will launch Christmas in our town centres HERTFORD Hertford’s annual Christmas Gala will take place in the town centre on Friday 26th November and, for the first time, Hertford Town Council will host Hertford Castle Christmas Market across the whole weekend from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th November.

Both events are organised by the town council and sponsored by McMullen’s Brewery and Durkan Homes.

For the gala, the town centre will be filled with Christmas market stalls and food stands, as well as fairground rides, singers and entertainers. The Christmas market will run in the castle grounds from 3-8pm on Friday, and 11am to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday. Free to attend, it will feature festive stalls on the castle lawn, plus entertainment and food and drink stands, all with the castle itself as beautiful backdrop.

Hertford’s Christmas Gala returns as does Ware Bear

Emphasis on local food proving a success at The Catherine Wheel New owners at The Catherine Wheel in Albury are gearing up for a busy first winter at the helm.

Tom and Ruth Carroll from nearby Bishop’s Stortford bought the pub, which was previously part of the TLC Inns group, back in the summer.

After a smart refresh of the building and, prompted by the pandemic, the creation of a spacious new outdoor dining terrace, the pair have reopened the doors with new management, kitchen team and staff – and a new focus on the food.

If you live in the area the “Wheel” as it’s fondly known is still very much your “local”.

There’s always a warm welcome for families, cyclists, walkers and their four legged companions.

You don’t have to dine, although you may be tempted by the newly introduced menu of bar snacks.

And for those out and about in the mornings, tea, coffee, cakes and pastries are on offer between 10am and 12noon.

Provenance is key The lunchtime and evening menus devised by head chef Aaron Poynter are what are tempting more visitors from outside the area to make the journey to the country pub, with a Sunday roast menu where beef, lamb, chicken and pork are all on offer, and the introduction of Fish Fridays on the last Friday of the month, playing no small part in the pub’s growing popularity.

With all dishes on the menus here, provenance of the ingredients is key.

Wherever possible the pub supports local producers (the Orchard Project at Perry Green’s St Elizabeth’s Centre which supplies apple juice potentially being the closest) and where this is not possible, produce is still sourced from within the British Isles.

You’ll find traditional pub classics on the menu including a house burger served with skinny fries and allotment slaw; Hadham Brewery-battered chef’s fish of the day; and Kilhorne Bay scampi served with triple cooked chips and peas, along with seasonal dishes.

Perfect cold weather fare includes

slow-braised Essex short rib beef with fondant potato, red cabbage and a rich beef jus; or the traditional steamed suet pudding of the day with creamy mash, garden veg and gravy.

Vegetarians and vegans are both catered for while a children’s menu offers a main and dessert for £8.

Food is served Wednesday to Saturday from 12noon to 9pm and Sundays 12noon to 6pm.

There are regular live music evenings and a programme of events which will see a barbecue and bonfire hosted at the pub

on Guy Fawkes Night, Friday 5th November. There won’t be fireworks but the bonfire will be lit at 5pm and families will be offered a free pack of sparklers.

There’s also a rumour that Santa may be making an appearance at the pub in December.

Brick Lane Bagel Co opens in Ware A taste of the East End has arrived in Ware with the opening of Brick Lane Bagel Co in Amwell End. The business already has branches in Essex, including at Theydon Bois, Epping, Ongar and Loughton and now the Muskett family have taken on a franchise to open branches in Hertfordshire.

Their first is brilliantly positioned near Ware’s station, High Street and Hertford Regional College and will be run by Becky Muskett, her mum Sharon, sister Danielle and daughters Mimi and Lola.

The Ware branch can be found in the new parade of units that has just been built in Amwell End. More food businesses are opening in the neighbouring units shortly, creating what will become a vibrant new food quarter in Ware.

Brick Lane Bagel Co has tables outside but is mainly about foodto-go, with a menu featuring Irish salt beef brisket, oak-smoked salmon and its own signature fillings, all using the finest ingredients.

Salt beef and pastrami bagels are among the most popular choices being sold so far while pizza bagels are just coming on stream too.

It also offers breakfast bagels, pastries, cannoli and coffee.

The freshly-made bagels (you have a choice of plain, sesame or poppy seeded) are collected at 3am each morning from the famous Brick Lane Bakery itself.

The Ware branch is open 7 days from 8am to 5pm (from 10am on Sunday). Delivery is now available to neighbouring towns through the Just Eat platform and private parties can also be catered for.

The family have plans to open more outlets in the future as well, with Bishop’s Stortford, St Albans and Welwyn Garden City all on their wish-list.

The Hummingbird takes off in style in time for Christmas

The Hummingbird in Hertford has been sumptuously designed to offer a night out that is different to any other on offer in the county town

The team at The Hummingbird in Hertford, which opened this summer, are busy preparing for the upcoming Christmas season.

Hertford diners may know the name of The Hummingbird from its previous incarnation (it was open for 10 months before closing when its parent company went into administration), but the restaurant and bar is now under different ownership.

Its new owners have invested in a major refurbishment of the Grade 2 listed townhouse in Fore Street, a building which was also previously home to a Hertford branch of the Loch Fyne restaurant group.

The man behind the new venue is David Catling, an award-winning restaurateur who counts the Pitcher and Piano, the Jazz Café and other well-known central London and national restaurant groups among his portfolio.

The Hummingbird is part of David’s Belle Group, which runs The Belle at Bassingbourn,

the vibrant greens and blues of the furniture and bright pink cherry blossom trees that sit within the main restaurant.

With the staffing problem among hospitality venues a well-known issue at present, The Hummingbird has recruited 40 local residents who will benefit from the group’s 18-month long training academy, set up to offer NVQs and degrees in hospitality-related courses.

They will be supported by an experienced team of managers with backgrounds in rosettestandard kitchens and the country’s best restaurant groups.

The Hummingbird is currently taking bookings for Christmas parties in December, with organisers of any party with 15 or more guests offered the reward of a £50 voucher.

AERATORS Do these really work? Yes they do! Nothing really beats a decanter, but this is a fast effective way to open out a wine with minimum fuss, and far easier to clean – simply attach to your wine bottle and pour.

DECANTERS Ideally buy one with a large base to give the wine the most contact with air. Stoppers look great on top of a decanter, but are rather pointless as we want the wine to react with the oxygen. The older the wine the more delicate it will have become and will lose its weight fast, so it will open out faster than young wines. I use this rule of thumb when leaving a wine to open out in a decanter: Young full-bodied wines 2-3 hours; Light or old wines 1-1.5 hours.
