Lea Wharf apartments to be offered for rent rather than sale Hotel element in doubt as operators fail to show an interest The 98 new apartments at Hertford’s flagship Lea Wharf development are to be retained by site owner Chase New Homes and offered for rent rather than for sale.

To this end, Chase has set up a new company, Chase Living Ltd, through which the smart new apartments – which are currently being built – will be offered on the open rental market.

Chase New Homes, which is building the entire development including commercial space on the site of the county town’s former Bircherley Green shopping centre, says the apartments should help alleviate Hertford’s shortage of homes to let.

It says the 32 one-bedroom and 66 two-bedroom apartments will be offered both furnished and unfurnished and aimed at local people, particularly young professionals.

Chase’s planning and design director Alan Ward said: “There is a significant shortage of rental accommodation in the private sector and we can help fill this void and deliver a range of new homes. Future residents will have a positive experience with our interior-designed apartments catering for modern living, with an on-site concierge who will assist with day-to-day needs,

maintain communal areas, such as the residents’ outdoor terrace, and be on hand to provide help when needed.”

Mr Ward revealed that Chase New Homes had rejected interest in the development from several institutional investors and individual landlords.

He said: “The creation of Chase Living Ltd will provide a portfolio of new homes professionally managed with fully staffed customer care and maintenance teams.

“We are immensely proud of the scheme and therefore resolved to continue to invest in Hertford by maintaining control of the project.

As a local company and builders of Lea Wharf we will endeavour

to provide the highest level of stewardship for residents. We look forward to ensuring Lea Wharf is a success and contributes to the vitality of Hertford for many years to come.”

Rental prices for the apartments will be set nearer to the time when marketing begins. This is likely to be later this year, with the first residents expected to move in in early 2023.

Farewell to hotel plan?

Meanwhile, building at Lea Wharf continues apace and almost all of the commercial space at the development is now let, subject to contract, with a mixture of retail, restaurant, gym and coffee shop usage, as well as the new local

NHS hub long mooted for the site.

However, Chase is seeking a change to its existing planning permission which could result in the hotel element of the site, on the corner of Railway Street and Bircherley Street, being made available for a different use.

Axis understands there has been a lot of interest expressed in the site from different parties but, despite extensive marketing for 18 months, none from a hotel operator.

Chase New Homes has now submitted a planning application which seeks to tidy up various aspects of its planning permission, including the introduction of an element known as a phasing plan.

This would effectively allow it to declare the development complete when the commercial and residential aspects are built, separating off the land currently earmarked for a hotel.

If that were to happen it would enable other interested businesses to talk to East Herts Council and potentially make their own planning applications for a different use of the site.

Any such application would still have to comply with the council’s town centre policies but, for example, it could be opened up to a different use such as a care home.

With no hotel operator coming forward so far, a change of use would stop the important corner site from remaining derelict for years to come.

Town council decides against asking to take over Hertford market Hertford Town Council will not be progressing a suggestion to look again at taking over the running of the town’s market from East Herts Council.

The town council’s Liberal Democrat and Green parties had suggested it might be time to revisit a decision, made in 2018, not to accept an offer from East Herts

Council allowing it to take over the running of the weekly market.

Taking it on might help to revitalise both the market and town, they said.

But when they met at the end of February, councillors on Hertford’s development and leisure committee heard that East Herts had recently increased promotion and support

for the market.

And they decided that rather than explore taking the market on themselves, they would seek to help the district council to attract new traders through the town’s Tourist Information Centre and via social media.

They agreed to review the position again in two years’ time. axis magazine 5

Waltham Cross furniture store Fishpools among retailers that could move to Park Plaza North

Broxbourne sets out possible next step in its A10 corridor plan

The transformation of land alongside the A10 at Cheshunt into a thriving area for business and industry continues with Broxbourne Council announcing its latest aspirations for Park Plaza North, the parcel of land just up from junction 25 of the M25.

The land in question, close to Newsprinters printworks, fronts the A10 between the Travelodge Hotel and Winston Churchill Way and extends eastwards to the Southbury Loop of the London Overground line that heads into London Liverpool Street.

The ten hectare site is being marketed for sale by owners IKEA. Mindful of the site’s strategic location at the southern gateway into the borough, Broxbourne Council has drawn up a draft development brief for the land, detailing, for any future owner, the type of development that it would consider appropriate there.

It is intended that the brief will be consulted upon and, once finalised, produced as a supplementary

planning document to the borough’s Local Plan.

The authority says a high quality business scheme could be a regionally significant development, integral to the wider renaissance of Waltham Cross which is just 500 metres to the east.

It is keen for the site to enable bulky goods retailers to be relocated from the town centre, for it to provide new homes for other businesses being displaced by major developments in the area, as well as be the home for a proposed new railway station, Park Plaza.

Fishpools on the move?

Furniture store Fishpools, which has been a presence in Waltham Cross town centre since 1899, is said to be keen to relocate to Park Plaza North with an area to the north west of the site earmarked for the business.

The council is also keen to see both the Wickes and Homebase stores on Sturlas Way in Waltham Cross relocated to the site. The document suggests that a move by

Jewson, currently located opposite the Lee Valley White Water Centre, could free up its current site for a new hotel while the relocation of Waltham Cross Post Office depot would free up its town centre site for redevelopment.

Businesses on the New River Trading Estate at Brookfield will also be looking to relocate with the land they occupy earmarked to form part of the Greater Brookfield development, as will others at Delamere Road where Inland Homes’ Cheshunt Lakeside development is underway.

For the remainder of the site the council proposes a trading estate of small units saying it would not be keen on a major warehouse development.

Any developer of the Park Plaza North site would be asked, the development brief states, to enter into a section 106 agreement at planning approval stage, to contribute £2million towards a new Park Plaza railway station.

Broxbourne has long held out for the right occupiers of the strategic

land running alongside the A10 and its strategy looks to be paying off.

A grand vision Heading up from junction 25 of the M25 a number of large-scale developments are planned with LA’s Sunset Studios having submitted a planning application for a parcel of land to the west of the road.

Farther along on the same side planning permission has been granted for a data centre facility.

Broxbourne Council is developing a new business centre nearby at Maxwells Farm, while farther along the road at Brookfield a major new civic, leisure and shopping development is planned along with new garden village of 1,250 new homes.

In the coming years these developments, along with any at Park Plaza North, are set to transform the appearance – and the fortunes – of the area which is fast becoming a sought after location to live and work.

Traffic restrictions in Hertford town centre set to stay in place for another 18 months

An 18-month trial of new traffic management arrangements in Hertford is expected to be introduced by Hertfordshire County Council.

The highways authority originally put in place a number of road changes in the town centre back in the summer of 2020 which included removing on-street parking bays and closing off the top end of Fore Street where it meets Parliament Square to traffic.

These measures were designed to create more space for social distancing at their height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In autumn last year the council carried out a consultation with residents and businesses to gauge their thoughts on their retention.

While a majority of respondents were in favour of keeping the top end of Fore Street leading into Parliament Square closed to traffic, there was a mixed response to the measures farther along Fore Street.

In light of this, as Axis went to press at the end of April, the council was consulting on a proposal to put in place a new experimental traffic order trialling a new regime of limited time parking, loading bays and disabled parking, together with the reinstatement of a taxi rank outside 100-110 Fore Street.

There would be three loading areas operating between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday, outside of which times motorists would be able to park in them

with no limit on parking duration.

Three disabled parking areas would operate 24 hours a day for all days of the year.

There would be one area offering limited parking (up to 30 minutes) in Fore Street which would operate during the day Monday to Saturday but again, outside of its hours of operation unlimited duration parking would be permitted.

Under the proposals Parliament Square will effectively remain pedestrianised with the top end of Fore Street closed.

The order would be in place for 18 months and its success gauged through the feedback received to it with the council anticipating being able to make a decision on whether to make the changes permanent around month 14.

A period of consultation was set to end on 1st May with the council saying that should it conclude that the order should come into force, it will do so “sometime after 1st May 2022.”

Artefacts found under site of new 3G sports pitch during archaeological dig More than 1,000 people attended an archaeological open day at Bishop’s Stortford’s Grange Paddocks at the end of April, to see the artefacts uncovered on the footprint of the sports centre’s planned new 3G pitch.

A Roman road, possible temple and cemetery (from which remains have been exhumed for analysis) were just some of the finds by the Oxford Archaeology team.

Coins, pottery and metal spearheads were also discovered along with a Caltrop – a Roman area denial weapon a bit like the spikes deployed by police today to stop cars that, in Roman times,

would have been used against men and horses.

Items that can be removed from the site will be preserved by Bishop’s Stortford Museum.

Cllr Eric Buckmaster, East Herts Council’s executive member for wellbeing, visited the site and said: “This excavation reminds us all that we are not the first to tread this land.

“The archaeologists working on site explained that their findings tell them this was a settlement on a major transport route, not dissimilar to Bishop’s Stortford today with its major road and rail connections.”

The Anglican parish church in Church Street is exploring ways in which the church might be better used by everyone in the town.

New Ware skate park officially opened Ware’s new skate park had its official opening in April.

It was commissioned by Ware Town Council, supported by additional funding from East Herts Council, and replaces the former old wooden ramps with a purpose built facility for skaters and skateboarders plus BMX bike and micro-scooter riders.

The opening ‘jam’ on Saturday 2nd April, included workshops and free beginners’ lessons with ABC Skateboarding while a DJ provided atmosphere for some of the high octane stunts from more experienced participants.

The construction team that built the park, Betongpark Ltd, have

deep roots in the skateboarding community.

Ahead of the launch Ware-based graphic designer Chris Page created a graphic mural scheme on the entrance slope while street artist Charles Uzzell Edwards, better known as Pure Evil, designed a Skate Ware logo for the park. Hertford-based Highway Cycles donated a Mafia Bomma bike as a raffle prize for the event.

The skate park can be found within Priory Park in Priory Street, Ware (SG12 0DE). It’s open from 8am to 8pm and suitable for all levels including younger riders who get their own Peewee park section designed to give them the space to

build their confidence. Users are encouraged to wear suitable safety equipment.

Construction begins on next phase of Hartham Leisure Centre The main construction phase of the redevelopment of Hartham Leisure Centre in Hertford has started with the demolition of the distinctive circular frontage of the old building to make way for planned new facilities.

Following the demolition works a new two-storey extension will be built on the footprint of the existing studio and reception area.

This will bring with it additional studio space, a new state of the art gym, new soft play area and a terrace style café that will open onto Hartham Common.

Brickwork from the demolition works is set to be reused during landscaping of the centre with other materials including timber and steel sorted for reuse and

recycling where possible.

The project is set to be completed by summer 2023. The leisure centre remains open while the works are underway.

Meanwhile, the opening of the refurbished pool at the centre has been delayed once again.

works as part of the £8million investment programme in the centre in Hartham Lane.

It had originally been due to reopen last autumn but schedules were affected by the impact of Brexit and the pandemic on the supply of materials and labour as well as additional works that were found to be needed.

RingGo in Broxbourne RingGo has replaced PaybyPhone as the cashless parking service provider for council-operated car parks in Broxbourne.

The change came in on 1st April and motorists can now pay for parking through the RingGo app, online at ringgo.com and via phone.

The free app can be downloaded onto smartphones via the App Store or Google Play. Once you have registered your details you simply enter the location code for the car park you are using, set the duration of parking and confirm payment. The app allows you to extend your parking session should you need to. Payment can also still be made via a machine situated in each car park via debit or credit card.

The council had said it was on track for a 30th April opening with operator Everyone Active hopeful that swimming lessons could restart in early May. But two days before the scheduled reopening East Herts issued a statement saying that while the refurbishment of the pool and changing village were complete there were a few remaining works to be completed, alongside staff training and final preparation for reopening the pool.

The council is due to give a further update by Friday 6th May. It apologised for any inconvenience caused and said Everyone Active would publish details on its website as soon as an opening date was confirmed.

What happens to your household waste – and why it matters To most of us our waste is, well, rubbish. Once the wheelie bin lid closes, it’s out of sight and out of mind. But we should care more.

Did you know that each household in East Herts throws away almost a tonne of waste each year? That’s the weight of a small car. Have you ever wondered where it all goes? And what the cost is to your pocket and to the planet?

Across the district, we dump 49% of this waste into our black bins.

Once emptied into the back of a refuse truck, the first stop for our black sacks is a Waste Transfer Station – for East Herts it’s a large building near Buntingford. Here the rubbish is compressed into the back of large bulk waste lorries and carried to its final destination.

This destination used to be in former quarry sites such as Westmill near Ware. However, all of Hertfordshire’s landfill sites are full so our rubbish must now be driven 50 miles or more to sites in nearby counties. There, about two thirds goes to energy recovery facilities where it is burned in small power stations to create electricity.

The rest goes into landfill.

This is where the hidden financial and environmental costs start to add up. While the electricity generated from incineration creates income for the council, the process also generates CO2 and air pollution. Meanwhile, burying waste at landfill sites releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Landfill is expensive too –

councils pay about £100 per tonne to bury it but ultimately taxpayers foot that bill. Then there is the cost of fuel for annually transporting more than 170,000 tonnes of waste out of Hertfordshire, as well as the CO2 and air pollution created by the vehicles themselves.

So every black bin bag we throw away hits us in our pockets and damages the planet.

How does recycling work?

What of the other 51% of our waste that goes into the blue recycling bin? In this case the collection lorries take the waste direct to a recycling centre near St Albans where it is sorted and passed through large machines that separate cardboard, iron and steel, aluminium and plastics and collects them up into huge

bundles which are then sold on to processors.

Every bit of our waste we recycle helps reduce the amount of energy and emissions generated in creating new materials. For instance, making new aluminium from old cans or foil uses 95% less energy than making it from scratch.

Recycled material is also sold, so it creates an income for the council, helping to offset the cost of waste collection.

This reliance on commercial processors has a downside – as a council it isn’t always possible to control where our recycled waste ends up. At present, about 12% of our recycled material is sent abroad to be reprocessed in Turkey or Asia. One long-term solution is to force manufacturers to reprocess here in the UK, so encouraging a bigger UK-based recycling industry which could create more jobs and cut emissions from transport.

Clearly there are other improvements to be made – the best option for the planet is to use less in the first place. And in East Herts we’re not very good at recycling.

Compared with the 49% of our district’s waste which goes in our black bins, households in Three Rivers and St Albans dump less than 39% in their black bins. In Germany the figure is just 34%.

How we can improve So how can we do better? A recent study of the contents of an average black bin bag found that almost 15% of what we chuck away is

recyclable paper or cardboard.

Worse still, more than a quarter of it is compostable food waste.

Some councils in Hertfordshire have a weekly food waste collection but East Herts Council has chosen not to. Hopefully that will change soon. In the meantime we can reduce the amount of food we throw away by using up left-overs, cooking slightly smaller amounts or composting waste veg or fruit which would otherwise be binned.

And we can all try to buy less, choose recycled over new, and share, swap or reuse.

And if you have to bin, check it’s not recyclable. Ultimately the planet will benefit, but so will your pocket.

Business Improvement District re-election campaign begins Love Hoddesdon BID Ltd has made a formal application to both the Secretary of State and Broxbourne Council to seek re-election for a further five-year term this autumn and has submitted its draft business plan for 2023 to 2027, which can be viewed at lovehoddesdon.co.uk The BID’s vision for Hoddesdon town centre is: “To create a pleasant, busy and vibrant town centre at the heart of the community that is safe, clean and attractive to everyone.”

All 200+ BID levy payers will be given the opportunity to offer their views on the draft business plan. The final version will then be circulated together with the formal notice of election in August, before ballot papers are issued in early September.

From across the pond to across the constituency, the recess proved a busy time The Parliamentary recess has allowed me time to make a series of visits across Hertford and Stortford, have a few days off and travel to Washington DC with fellow MPs. The visit to the United States was with a cross-party delegation organised by the British American Parliamentary Group.

We were hosted by the British Embassy in Washington and members of Congress, with Ukraine the big talking point.

We also met with various US government departments, including the State department, to discuss areas where we have shared interests such as trade, relations with China, the post-pandemic recovery and supply chains.

It was a busy and informative trip.

In Hertford and Stortford Then it was back to the constituency for those visits.

I went to St Michael’s Church in Bishop’s Stortford to see the work to renovate the clock tower.

Though restoration of the bells remains ongoing, the clock tower is a wonderful and historic site and will be well worth a visit when the work is complete later this year.

Another highlight was the chance to visit the award-winning Fish Yard, also in Bishop’s Stortford, which recently won the Best Regional Takeaway title at the British Kebab Awards 2022.

I met with the staff and owner Inan Dogus to congratulate them on their accolade.

I also made an important visit to the East Herts Black Parents Assembly (EHBPA) where I met

with members Abdul Momoh and Nii Thompson and Sawbridgeworth Town Clerk Chris Hunt.

The meeting was a chance for me to introduce myself to EHBPA and help support the group in its work and in growing its network of members across East Herts.

The aim of the assembly is to create positive social space for black and biracial families. The group meets to discuss action on EHBPA priorities that include education, policy, planning and local services.

Chris Hunt and Sawbridgeworth Town Mayor, Cllr Greg Rattey, are also developing a partnership engagement event for the community later this year which will be supported by both myself and EHBPA members. I am looking forward to being involved.

Good news for rail passengers There was more good rail news for local passengers as work to extend platforms at Hertford East and Ware stations started this month.

The project is being undertaken to allow the stations to accommodate Greater Anglia’s new 10-carriage electric commuter trains.

There has been some disruption to services from the stations as a result of the improvements but I think most people will think it is well worth it.

More work is expected to take place this summer and the longer platforms are expected to be ready for use this autumn.

Cars at the Castle in Hertford The popular annual car show Cars at the Castle returns to the lawn of Hertford Castle on Sunday 15th May from 12noon to 4pm.

This free-to-attend event features up to 80 modern and vintage cars

to view and find out more about, while there will also be food and refreshment stalls and live music, making it an entertaining afternoon out for all the family.

The Enfield Pageant of Motoring is returning over two days – Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May. Held at Enfield Playing Fields on Great Cambridge Road (EN1 3PL), the show is a must for motoring fans, with displays of British-made cars and classic American cars as well as arena events including freestyle motorcycling displays by Jamie Squibb.

Other attractions include hot hatches, modified cars, classics

for sale, car club stalls, radiocontrolled car racing, a large autojumble plus food stalls, music and a fairground.

Run by Enfield and District Veteran Vehicle Trust, the event raises funds for the nearby Whitewebbs Museum of Transport.

The show is open from 9am to 7pm on Saturday and from 9am to 5pm on Sunday and admission is £10 for adults, £5 for children aged 6-12, free for children aged five and under.

It’s the 1st Herts Book Festival The first Herts Book Festival is being held on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May, featuring a series of free, family daytime events in two venues, at Hertford Castle on Saturday and at Ware Priory on Sunday.

The idea of the festival, which is being organised by a volunteer committee, is to showcase local authors and celebrate reading and it is intended to become a regular event.

Hertford Castle hosts a storytelling tent, Great Hertford Book Exchange and author market stalls, whilst Ware Priory also has an author market in the Fletcher’s Lea building as well as children’s storytime and family poetry workshop events in a

marquee. The festival website includes links where you can buy copies of books from local authors, including Paul Gitsham, Nikki Vallance and Abena Eyeson, as well.

DATCHWORTH OPEN GARDENS Datchworth holds its open gardens event on Sunday 29th May. Called Datchworth Jubilee Gardens this year, visitors can visit 11 inspirational private gardens, enjoy live music, a floral tribute to the Queen in the 13th century All Saints village church and traditional ploughman’s lunches and homemade cake.

Hop on and off the courtesy bus to the different gardens or walk between them, spotting Jubilee scarecrows on the way.

Admission is £7 (cash) to include a garden guide and parking.

Bish Bash returns to Bishop’s Stortford

Bish Bash, aka Stortford Music Festival, returns for its 20th incarnation over the Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend of Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th June at Sworder’s Field.

As well as being an annual pilgrimage for local music fans it is also a big community weekend out, attracting up to 6,000 people enjoying three stages, a drama and comedy tent, food stalls, a gin bar, real ale tent, dance tent, children’s entertainment and community stalls.

On Friday 3rd June the music

includes performances from the Boo Radleys, local Britpop band Collapsed Lung, Bishop’s Stortford band Darlings and the popular showstoppers Uncle Funk’s Disco Inferno.

On Saturday 4th June, EMF headline. Other acts include skapunk rock n rollers Buster Shuffle and Swingers, who bring an alternative take to dance music.

Both weekend (£45) and day (£25) tickets are available now at stortfordmusicfestival.org.uk.

Henry Moore: The Sixties The Sixties is a new exhibition at Henry Moore Studios and Gardens in Perry Green, which is now open for the season until the end of October.

In the 1960s, Moore embraced new materials and techniques which enabled him to work on an increasingly monumental scale. He incorporated a greater degree of abstraction in his work and satisfied an enormous global demand for his art, which sometimes generated controversy. The exhibition features rarely seen sculptures, drawings, graphics 22 axis magazine

and a wealth of archive material to illuminate the innovation of an artist at the height of his powers.

Entry to The Sixties is included with a ticket to the Studios and Gardens, which are open from Wednesday to Sunday and on Bank Holidays from 11am to 5pm. Adult admission is £16.

WILDLIFE OF POLAND A presentation on the Wildlife and Birds of Poland is being held by the RSPB’s south-east Herts group on Tuesday 24th May at 7.45 for 8pm at the United Reformed Church Hall, Mill Lane, Broxbourne EN10 7BG. Richard Bashford, who has made numerous trips to Poland over 20 years, will be giving the virtual tour of the country’s most wellknown wildlife locations. Entry is £3.50 or £3 for RSPB members.

HISTORY OF PANSHANGER An exhibition about Panshanger Park will begin at Hertford Museum in Bull Plain on Tuesday 24th May and will run until 14th August. This guest exhibition from the Friends of Panshanger Park tells the history of one of the county town’s best-loved open spaces.

Things are about to move quickly with theatre redevelopment Rebecca Pegg of Hertford Theatre brings us her latest update Hello and welcome to the regular column from Hertford Theatre!

Since our last update, we’ve secured a contractor for our Growth and Legacy Redevelopment Project!

We’re excited to be working with Hertfordshire based GPF Lewis who will be building our fantastic new venue, and by the time you get to read this, there’s likely to be some work starting on site.

Over the next few weeks, things will start to move quickly, which is great news for everyone.

However, we’re still feeling the

impact of the pandemic and Brexit on work, along with organisations up and down the country, but we’re feeling positive about where we are right now, meaning we can say we’re planning to open in late 2023.

There’s a lot to do before then!

In other news, we’ve begun a listening project with primary pupils and staff at Mill Mead School, SEND students at Herts Regional College and secondary students at The Sele School and Haileybury, thanks to our Royal Opera House Bridge Learning Offer Development Fund and Associate Artist Stuart Mullins.

This project is laying the foundations for the creation of a learning and wellbeing department in our new building, which is something exciting for local schools and education settings to look forward to.

We’re working again with fantastic theatre company Half A String to co-produce a brand new story for winter and this year, we’re building a theatre-inthe-round inside The Drill Hall, Ware.

Echoes of Moore in Parndon Mill gallery’s stunning new exhibition Colours, Curves and Textures is the next exhibition at the excellent Gallery at Parndon Mill in Harlow. Running from Thursday 12th May until Sunday 19th June, it presents photographs by Lynne Blount and Sylvie Gummery taken at Perry Green over many months with permission of the Henry Moore Foundation.

These mainly abstract images,

created using multiple exposures, are an art form in their own right. They are complemented by sculptures by James Copper who has worked with the Henry Moore Foundation for most of his adult life. A-Ha: The Movie (TBC) From Friday 20th May No, it’s not another Alan Partridge outing, this is a documentary about the Norwegian synth pop band that took the 1980s by storm with their huge hits such as Take On Me and cutting edge videos in the MTV era. Now in their 50s, the trio have re-formed and this unusual rockumentary follows them on tour over a four-year period in which they travel in separate limousines, stay in separate luxury hotels and only ever meet up on stage.

Top quality line-up for Festival of Music Hertfordshire Festival of Music returns at the start of June with a glorious programme of live music, old and new.

The brainchild of the late Tom Hammond and composer James Francis Brown, the festival has grown rapidly from a small weekend event to one of the UK’s major summer music festivals, featuring international artists and ensembles alongside innovative outreach and educational projects, all based in and around the county town of Hertford.

This year’s festival runs from Thursday 2nd to Saturday 11th June, taking in the weekend of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

This year’s principal artist is the horn player Ben Goldscheider, who is from Hertfordshire and will take part in several festival events. His Goldscheider Quintet will perform with narrated pieces

by Ruth Gipps and Ravel and he will also give a recital with pianist Richard Uttley and a masterclass for selected aspiring horn performers.

Musicians Guy Johnston, Melvyn Tan, Mathilde Milwidsky and Huw Watkins are among the artists visiting HFoM for the first time and other performers include the Maggini String Quartet.

Ware Choral Society will perform their third concert under the leadership of new musical director Harry Sever on Saturday 11th June at Ware Drill Hall – it will be Mozart’s Mass in C Minor.

The choir will be accompanied by traditional baroque instruments played by The Brook Street Band – named after the Mayfair street where Handel lived and composed for most of his working life.

Harry Sever said: “We are thrilled to be performing this piece, one of Mozart’s great masterworks, on historical instruments – recreating the kind of sound world that Mozart envisaged and audiences would have heard at the time.

“We are also looking forward to welcoming some of the country’s leading soloists for this concert – singers who have sung at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, ENO, Glyndebourne, the BBC Proms – you name it!”

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations Nation set to honour Her Majesty from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June over four-day Bank Holiday weekend

Celebrations for Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will see events held across the area over the extended Bank Holiday weekend at the start of June.

Here is what’s on in your area...

Hertford In Hertford, a traditional celebration will take place on Thursday 2nd June. Hertford Castle will hold an open day with

a brass band concert, afternoon tea and lawn games between 12noon and 4pm. Admission is free, though donations to the Mayor’s charity are welcome.

Hertford Castle will also host a Royal Trail between Saturday 28th May and Sunday 5th June, with local businesses, groups and charities creating displays with a royal theme around the grounds, which are open all day.

JoiN uS At WAre Priory

Ware In Ware, the town council is hosting two events to mark the Jubilee. The first, on Saturday 4th June, is a family fun day at Ware Priory from 12noon to 4pm with lawn games, and music and craft workshops. Then on Sunday 5th a Jubilee concert will be held in the Priory grounds with Miss Alex’s Jazz Band from 5-6pm and Ware Brass from 6.30-8pm. The bar will be open – take a picnic!

Hoddesdon & Broxbourne Lowewood Museum in Hoddesdon is holding an exhibition called Jubilations and Coronations from Saturday 30th April until Saturday 18th June.

Additional activities will take place at the museum during the Jubilee weekend. The museum is open on Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm.

Love Hoddesdon BID and Broxbourne Council have teamed up to organise a Platinum Jubilee Street Party in Hoddesdon town centre on Saturday 4th June, with 1950s-themed professional musical entertainment and a lunch for invited older people.

There will also be a general street party during the afternoon with

entertainment from local bands and artists in the area of the High Street between Fawkon Walk and the Jubilee Shelter, as well as community and food stalls – this will run until 7.30pm.

Sawbridgeworth In Sawbridgeworth there will be an indoor street party on Friday 3rd June at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall in The Forebury, between 2.30 and 4.30pm for the local community. Tickets can be bought online at £5 per child (adults free) at smht.org.uk.

Bishop’s Stortford A free Jubilee Trail has been organised in Bishop’s Stortford from 28th May to 6th June. Pick up a trail leaflet from outside Smiggle in Jackson Square or the Tourist Information Centre in Market Place then follow the trail to find all nine crown stickers and find the Jubilee-themed word for a chance to win an iPad.

Owners hope new Ware pizza business will be the template for future expansion Now open in Ware is Fuoco’s, a new pizzeria which promises the hottest Neapolitan pizza in town whether you’re collecting or taking advantage of its in-house delivery service.

At the top of Amwell End where it meets the high street, the first and very slick ‘flagship’ Fuoco’s store, which the team behind it hope will be the first of many nationwide, is the result of several years’ research and development by friends Keith Churchhouse, Phil Hodey and Alan Broe.

Three entrepreneurs with backgrounds in hospitality, recruitment and technology, they have combined their skills to first create the perfect takeaway pizza that they say will arrive at your door looking and tasting like it

has just come out of the oven, and then their own tech-driven ordering and tracking service and delivery operation.

Fuoco’s offers a range of 13-inch pizzas, made with dough produced using high quality flour, San Marzano tomato sauce and a range of toppings far removed from the offerings at your average pizza takeaway.

Old favourites including a pepperoni, a ham and mushroom and a Hawaiian feature on a menu that also includes more artisan offerings – Fig and Burrata, a Moroccan with marinated lamb and spiced aubergine, and both Chicken and Cauliflower Shawarma pizzas to name a few. Vegan options are an integral part of the menu.

There are starters and sides,

desserts including Fuoco’s original Italian gelato, soft drinks and beers and wine including Beavertown’s popular Neck Oil session IPA and premium wines in 250ml cans from Kiss of Wine.

Fuoco’s is a cashless business that is designed to operate seamlessly via its app. Download this to browse the menu, benefit from current offers, order and pay, and get real time updates on your order including an accurate collection or delivery time.

If you prefer to pop in to the store you can order at one of the self-serve kiosks or at the counter where an ‘ordough’ taker will be happy to serve you.

You’re also welcome to eat in at the casual dining table at the centre of the store or one of the window bar seats.

You won’t find Fuoco’s on other delivery apps. The whole ethos of the business, say the team behind it, is to deliver food to your

door as fresh as it would be in a restaurant and for this reason they retain control of their own delivery operation. Fuoco’s is also an environmentally-conscious business, aiming to use recyclable packaging wherever possible and making deliveries on a small fleet of electric bikes.

At the current time delivery is available within Hertford, Ware and Hoddesdon although the business is currently looking for franchisees to take Fuoco’s to new areas.

Tilly’s Gelato brings a flavour of summer to Hertford

There is a bright new addition to Hertford’s food and drink scene – Tilly’s Gelato, a luxury boutique gelato and coffee shop that has just opened in Railway Street.

Run by mother and daughter Penny and Tilly Anderson, the business stems from the pair’s passion for gelato, person to person interaction – and the colour pink!

It is based in the building formerly occupied by Clock Cards and

specialises in artisan gelato, Arabica coffee and hand-baked cakes.

Each day there will 14 flavours of ice cream available which change daily and include vegan options, supplied by Jack’s Gelato, a Cambridge-based independent who make everything by hand in small batches using only the very best ingredients.

After many years making ice cream in restaurants and home kitchens,

owner Jack put everything he had into starting his own business in 2010 and hasn’t looked back – and now you can enjoy the fruits of his labours in Hertford at Tilly’s.

Coffee is from Illy, with tea and hot chocolate also available as well as soft drinks.

Tilly says they will always have a selection of hand-baked cakes; examples include lemon drizzle, carrot cake, cinnamon buns and brownies, together with guest

cakes such a morello cherry blondie.

Tilly’s Gelato is open six days a week, from Tuesday to Sunday.

Current opening hours are 11am to 6pm in the week and from 10am to 6pm at weekends, though Tilly says she expects to open until later (possibly up to either 10 or 11pm) in the summer.

Rosey Lea takes over the café at Henry Moore Studios and Gardens Rosey Lea, the Bishop’s Stortfordbased tea room business, has taken over the café catering at Henry Moore Studios and Gardens in Perry Green.

The business, owned by Leanne Gregory, took over the role on 1st April.

The café at the studios and gardens has reopened with a new all-day dining menu including brunch, coffee, tea and light lunches.

Highlights of the seasonal menu include speciality baguettes and 32 axis magazine

bagels, salads, homemade quiches, sandwiches, cakes, cream teas and ice cream, accompanied by full flavoured Arabica coffee and loose leaf teas.

The café will be open alongside the venue from Wednesdays to Sundays (and Bank Holidays) from 11am to 4.30pm until 30th October.

An admission ticket to the studios and gardens is required to access the café which overlooks the stunning sculpture gardens.

Owner Leanne Gregory said: “I am thrilled that Rosey Lea will be located at the Henry Moore Studios and Gardens and I hope that Henry Moore himself would be proud to have our very traditional and authentic style in his grounds.”

Rosey Lea’s first tea room opened at 12 Market Square in Bishop’s Stortford which was followed by a second branch at Wickham Hall, off Hadham Road on the outskirts of the town.

Enjoy a great day out at Ware’s annual food festival Historic Tudor Square will be the venue for the 8th Ware Food Festival, which will take place on Sunday 22nd May between 11am and 3pm.

The popular family day out attracts visitors from the town and farther afield and looks set for a bumper turnout this year.

There will be plenty of great food to eat at the festival on the go, from the likes of Manolya, Brick Lane Bagel Co, Healey’s Kitchen with their tacos, The Smokin’ Greek and Sweetlove Burgers, to be followed by something sweet from Ell Churros and Dawes Ice Cream.

And you can also stock up on take-home treats from Azahar, Double Truffle Patissiere, Jaccs Coffee Beans, Moggies Pickles, Proto Artisan Bread, Lisa Botanicals, Tiny Treats and The Veggie Box – and you can set the scene for a candlelit picnic at home with some gentle light from Tailored Candle Co.

There will also be entertainment from pop-up Somewhere2Sing at noon and from the ever-popular Lip Service brass band at 1.30 and 2.30pm. The Cake Ladies will be dishing up sweet treats with a touch of glamour throughout the day too.

With St George’s Day just gone, I thought it would be a good time discuss the prospects for English wines.

England is a producer of premium wines.

In a nutshell: A challenger to the primacy of Champagne.

Because of England’s cool climate, only early-ripening vine varieties stand a chance of reliably producing a crop. In the last 10 years or so, bottle-fermented sparkling wines have become Britain’s strongest suit, especially those made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

So how have our wines fared over the last few years?

In March 2020 it was very warm for the time of year which only accelerated the vines to flower but then we were hit with a devastating April frost.

This led to a delay in the grapes ripening before, thankfully, 16:24 we had a brilliant summer which recovered the lost time. So overall we produced an average to good vintage, while some lucky vineyards which escaped the April frost actually had a fantastic year.

In 2021 the April frost reared its ugly head once again; many vineyards went to extraordinary lengths by lighting fires in the middle of the night to tackle this problem! The situation was worsened by the never-ending summer rain which caused the grapes to severely under-ripen and caused rot, essentially wiping out a vintage for many vineyards.

Let’s hope 2022 will be more fruitful!
