A school to be proud of: Broxbourne unveils its new buildings

Students, teachers, governors and the team from Chase New Homes at the official opening of The Broxbourne School last month

April saw the opening of The Broxbourne School’s state of the art new buildings and facilities, marked by a ribbon cutting in the school grounds.

Built by Chase New Homes and completed five months ahead of schedule, the impressive new school comprises multiple buildings designed by architects Bond Bryan.

A striking three storey atrium houses a large library and resource centre, forms a hub and social space and links the three main teaching wings of the building.

There is also a range of new facilities including an indoor sports hall, 3G football pitch, a multi-use games area for sports such as netball and tennis and The Broxbourne Music Centre which will be available for use by the whole community as well as students. These have their own

separate community entrances for out of hours use.

The sports centre is named The Margot Shawyer Sports Centre in memory of the school’s previous chair of governors who was a great advocate for sport and a driving force behind moves to improve the school estate for future generations, but who sadly passed away before the project was realised.

A very special place Having welcomed the first pupils into the new building, headteacher Paula Humphreys said: “We’re all so excited to be in our new buildings which enhance not only the learning experience of our students but provide a fantastic resource for local groups and the wider community in and around Broxbourne.

“This would not have been possible without the expertise,

commitment and determination shown by our governors, Cornerstone advisors and the developers Chase New Homes and we are also grateful to Broxbourne Borough Council, Hertfordshire County Council and the Education and Skills Funding Agency for their support.

“Walking in through the front entrance for the first time, and seeing the looks on the students’ faces, was very special.”

Provision of the new school building, which replaces the former 1950s and 60s-built facilities, was made possible through a partnership between the school and Welwyn Garden City-based Chase New Homes whose MD Gary Barton is a former pupil.

In addition to developing the new school building Chase is also delivering the aptly-named

Scholars, a collection of new homes on surplus land next door.

The company’s CEO Tony Carey said: “New development doesn’t just mean the delivery of houses and apartments. This project proves that with careful planning and a spirit of collaboration across the public and private sectors, new homes can also mean new amenities for the whole community to enjoy.

“The opening of The Broxbourne School is an incredibly proud moment for the team at Chase.”

With the school now complete, work continues on building the new homes which include two bedroom apartments, and three, four and five bedroom houses.

How Sawbridgeworth clubbed together to honour Terry the Sweep In a heart-warming display of community solidarity, the people of Sawbridgeworth rallied round to give the popular local figure best known to them as Terry the Sweep a proper send-off last month.

Terence Parker, who died of a suspected heart attack at the end of February, was employed

by first East Herts Council and then contractor Veolia as a road-sweeper and was a familiar face around the town.

He lived alone in a caravan in High Wych and because no one locally was aware if he had any family, there was uncertainty as to the kind of funeral he would be able to have.

However, the owner of local pub The Hand and Crown in High Wych Darren Grover and his son Josh set up a Go Fund Me appeal as locals were determined to give Terry the send-off they felt he deserved.

They then set about organising the occasion with the help of the town council’s interim town clerk

Jo Sargant and local businesses including Daniel Robinson & Sons funeral directors and Violet’s Floral Designs.

Locals lined the streets and clapped as the funeral cortege passed through Bell Street on Thursday 15th April headed for a private ceremony at Three Mile Pond Cemetery. axis magazine 5

Hertford Theatre is set to receive a radical revamp

Planning permission granted for new-look Hertford Theatre

Work on the foundations of the new Lea Wharf development, which is replacing the former Bircherley Green shopping centre in Hertford, is now underway.

The piling (construction of foundations) began last month while ground beams, which support the main structure of buildings, are due to be put in during May and June. Since March, archaeology has been taking place on the site but to date there have been no finds that require work to be held up.

The main superstructure is due to be built between this October and February 2022 with the roof going on next March and April.

The first apartments are expected to be ready for sale in September 2022 with completion of the whole development due in 2023.

Lea Wharf is being built by local developer Chase New Homes and includes two blocks which will be a mixture of commercial space and apartments and will run from Railway Street down to the River Lea. The commercial units will be at ground level with 98 apartments above in a wharf/warehouse style design.

The commercial units include space for shops and riverside restaurants, both of which Chase say they are

Redevelopment plans which will see a £19.9million investment in Hertford Theatre have been given the go-ahead.

East Herts Council’s development management committee met on Wednesday 31st March and approved the council’s own plans for investment in the popular facility in The Wash which will see its main auditorium space expanded and a new studio auditorium for smaller live acts and performances built.

The plans will also see three bespoke cinema screens added which will allow the theatre to screen first release films for the first time.

There will be a new plaza-style foyer with riverside café bar while outside a new boardwalk will link the theatre with Hertford Castle Gardens, allowing the public to appreciate the surrounding area and its historical features including the castle motte.

Theatre director Rhys Thomas said: “Throughout the health crisis over the last year, the one thing that has been even more crucial and evident is the need to hold on to a sense of community. The improvement works will ensure that Hertford Theatre can meet demand and will sustainably stand

already seeing a lot of interest in.

Alan Ward, the company’s planning and design director, said interest had been especially strong among hospitality providers looking to take the riverside restaurant units but that there was also ‘early interest’ from a small supermarket as well.

Super surgery on track Talks are still progressing and are now at an advanced level for a new NHS super-surgery to be based within the development too.

A hotel is due to be built on the corner of Railway Street and Bircherley Street but interest in this remains slow since Premier Inn announced it was pulling out of the scheme. Mr Ward said the site was continuing to be marketed both locally and nationally and that he hoped there would be more interest as the economy recovers from the pandemic.

Celebration performance The theatre will open briefly after 17th May for three weeks when live shows including a brand new Horrible Histories stage show, Twirlywoos Live and a special Celebrating Hertford Theatre performance take place alongside socially distanced cinema.

It will then close from Monday 7th June in preparation for works to commence in the summer/autumn.

Leaving the lockdown behind: How the reopening has begun Shops lead the high street resurgence The area’s high streets began opening up in April as nonessential retailers, hairdressers and beauty businesses were given the go-ahead to open their doors after almost four months of lockdown.

Cafés, pubs and restaurants were also permitted to open up outdoor spaces to diners with the opening of indoor space scheduled for later this month subject to the Government’s final confirmation.

In Hoddesdon the town’s mascot Master Henry Hoddas was out and about to celebrate the first Saturday of trading since lockdown eased, meeting retailers and their customers on 17th April.

In Bishop’s Stortford, Hertford and Stortford MP Julie Marson and town mayor Keith Warnell officially re-opened the high street along with members of the Business Improvement District team.

To support the town’s businesses, the BID is funding free parking in the town’s Causeway car park after 3pm on Mondays and Tuesdays up to and including Tuesday 11th May. Machines in the car park will be ‘bagged’ from 3pm on the relevant days with no need to buy a ticket.

If you arrive before 3pm simply pay up until that time.

Social distancing measures are in place including queue management, screens on enquiry desks, hand sanitiser stations and quarantine areas for returned books.

Customers are required to provide their details for Test and Trace purposes and wear face coverings during their visit.

The People’s Network computers are available in one-hour slots for customers who have made a booking in advance with 15 minutes between bookings to allow for cleaning.

At the same time as our high streets opened up last month, Hertfordshire’s libraries also began to welcome customers back through the doors.

30 of the county’s biggest libraries are now open again including Bishop’s Stortford, Cheshunt, Hertford, Hoddesdon, Waltham Cross and Ware.

However, at the time Axis went to print, smaller community libraries run in partnership with volunteers including Cuffley, Goffs Oak and Sawbridgeworth remained closed.

In those that are open, visiting is subject to some limitations.

County archives begin to open up their files Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies, based at County Hall in Hertford, is also now open again.

HALS is the official repository for Hertfordshire’s parish registers and historical documents including local newspapers dating back to 1772, thousands of photographs, postcards, watercolours and illustrations, military records, books, maps and more.

It is an invaluable research facility, particularly for those interested in local history or in tracing their

family tree. It is now open again although visitors need to book their visit and the documents that they would like to see a week in advance. Appointments in the archive reading room or local studies library are for two and a half hours and customers can order up to eight documents per session.

Other onsite services remain limited and anyone needing advice is encouraged to contact the enquiry team before they book.

BRIEFING: COVID-19

Contact tracing leadership is handed over to local teams Local teams are now leading the efforts to make contact with people who have tested positive for coronavirus and begin the task of identifying their contacts.

The Local-0 scheme, launched in April, is a partnership between Hertfordshire County Council and the Department of Health and Social Care.

Under it, teams from the county along with the 10 district and borough councils in Hertfordshire will take primary responsibility for contacting people who have tested positive, a task previously undertaken by NHS Test and Trace.

The teams aim to ensure that these residents and members of their households can self-isolate successfully and have the necessary support to do so.

The national body will still provide support in tracing contacts but it is hoped that the new approach should mean people that have tested positive will be contacted more quickly than they have been until now.

Jim McManus, the Director of Public Health for Hertfordshire, said: “The new scheme is an important step, as it will allow teams at the district and borough councils to use their local knowledge of communities and their expertise to determine more quickly where people may have caught the virus, and that knowledge will help to stop the spread and identify any possible

local outbreaks.”

He urged anyone needing support while self-isolating to contact HertsHelp, a network of community organisations which can offer everything from mental health support and help with money and debt concerns to the undertaking of practical tasks such as collecting shopping or helping with pet care.

Carnivals cancelled for second year

As the Government’s road map out of Covid restrictions continues to unfold, plans are becoming clearer for some of the major public events that locals look forward to.

Unfortunately, there have already been some casualties – the 2021 Ware Festival, including the town’s annual carnival and Rock in the Priory outdoor concert, has been cancelled this year.

Ware Town Council, which organises the popular month-long festival, hope to run a smaller indoor version of Rock in the

Priory later alongside the town’s Riverside Real Ale Festival.

Bishop’s Stortford Carnival will also not go ahead this year, organiser Bishop’s Stortford Town Council has confirmed to Axis, though it is hoped some other smaller events will be arranged.

There are, however, hopes that Ware Food Festival in June and Hertford’s Rock at the Castle and Musical Mystery Tour in August will be able to take place.

Talks are ongoing about Ware’s Dickensian Evening in December.

Ballot paper quarantining will delay counting for local elections The fall-out from Covid-19 will also affect the counting for this year’s local elections on Thursday 6th May, with the results expected to be delayed by at least 24 hours because ballot papers will be quarantined before counting can get underway.

Counting is unlikely to begin until

the night of Friday 7th May so people will not be able to discover results in their area until Saturday at the earliest.

All 78 seats on Hertfordshire County Council are being contested in a once in every four years election. On Broxbourne borough and Harlow district

councils one third of the seats are being contested, whilst there are also by-elections for seats in East Herts district, Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth, Hertford and Ware town councils.

The Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner election is also taking place.

A new dawn beckons for Hoddesdon’s Lowewood Museum The Lowewood Museum in Hoddesdon is now under the management of a new locally-run charitable trust and will open again in early June.

Lowewood is the museum for the borough of Broxbourne but was under threat of permanent closure 18 months ago.

Though owned by Broxbourne Council, Lowewood had been run

by Epping Forest Museum under an agreement between the two.

However, in June 2019, Epping Forest gave 12 months’ notice that it intended to pull out of the arrangement.

That December, Broxbourne Council announced its intention to close the facility permanently, saying it cost taxpayers £100,000 a year and that it could no longer afford to run it.

A public outcry followed and, after a campaign led by volunteer group the Friends of Lowewood Museum, the council agreed to the setting up of a new trust to take over the management.

The Lowewood Museum Trust has been set up as a CIO (Community Interest Organisation) and was awarded charitable status by the Charity Commission in January

Helen Giles and David Dent are looking forward to the reopening

this year. It assumed formal responsibility for the running of the museum on 1st April and is currently made up of nine trustees, headed by chair David Dent, who led the campaign to save the museum.

The trust has a long-term (20 years-plus) arrangement in place with Broxbourne and pays a peppercorn rent to the council

which is supplying an index-linked £30,000 of funding per year for the duration of the arrangement.

Broxbourne has also agreed to look after the fabric of the building.

Plans for the future The trust has also secured a grant of just over £50,000 from the Arts Council Recovery Fund.

What is Lowewood Museum?

Lowewood is the museum for the borough of Broxbourne, including Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, Cheshunt and Waltham Cross.

Its permanent exhibitions tell the story of life in the area and it also runs temporary, changing exhibitions, each of which focuses on a different aspect of local life and history.

It is set in a beautiful Georgian building at the southern end of Hoddesdon’s High Street, the majority of which dates from the 1750s and was formerly home to the Warner family led by the renowned local Quaker John Warner, whose name is commemorated by John Warner school and leisure centre locally.

Helen Giles, a former curator of Hertford Museum who is now a freelance museums consultant, has joined Lowewood for six months to help set it up, while a team of volunteers has been recruited too.

Since reversing its original closure decision, Broxbourne Council has been very supportive of the new trust and has been funding the work of another experienced museum consultant, Sam Hunt, who is putting together a bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund to help fund a part-time curator/ development officer post to help drive the museum’s growth.

The museum has been closed since March 2020, when the first lockdown came into force. But David Dent said the plan is for it to reopen on Saturday 12th June.

Initially, the museum will open from 10am to 4pm on Friday and Saturday.

Mr Dent said: “It will be a while before we get back to where we were before, but we wouldn’t be where we are now without the support of the wider local community and we are looking forward to being able to open our doors again and welcome people back.”

Get involved Already, more than 60 people have offered to volunteer their time and expertise to help the museum, but the trust is still keen to recruit more to help with everything from front of house duties to archiving.

More buildings sought for Hertford’s Heritage Trail Hertford Town Council and Hertford Civic Society are inviting the public to nominate buildings that could be added to their blue plaque heritage trail.

The trail was launched in 2017 and features 41 buildings, each marked with a plaque, selected for their historic significance and interest value.

There is a Heritage Trail leaflet which can also be found online

featuring a list of the buildings, information about them and map showing their location.

They include well recognised local landmarks such as Hertford Castle, the former Christ’s Hospital School and McMullen’s brewery, but also lesser known buildings with interesting histories such as 41 Cowbridge where the author WE Johns, famous for the Biggles books, lived during his childhood

above his father’s tailor’s shop.

The organisations are now looking to add a small number of buildings to the map. To nominate a building visit hertford.gov.uk/ hertford-heritage-trail or email katherine.crafer@hertford.gov.uk with the premises’ address and information on why you think it should be considered.

Hoddesdon begins to bounce back with support of BID team With restrictions on shop closures starting to be lifted in April, Love Hoddesdon, the not-for-profit company responsible for the business improvement district in Hoddesdon town centre, has been working tirelessly to help the town and its businesses bounce back from the Covid-19 pandemic.

It has worked with Broxbourne Council on its Shop Safe/Shop Local campaign which is aimed at increasing customer confidence about returning to the borough’s High Street, as part of the Government’s Reopening High Streets Safely initiative.

This includes providing promotional banners on lampposts, railings, buses and bus shelters, as well as a press and social media campaign.

A promotional video featuring a number of local businesses has also been produced and shared via Facebook and LinkedIn. Complementary to this, Love Hoddesdon has developed its own Welcome Back to Hoddesdon campaign, which encourages residents to shop locally. As part of this, the town’s mascot Master Henry Hoddas has been visiting a number of businesses to promote them as they start to reopen. A range of short interviews with local businesses will also allow them to tell their story about getting through the pandemic and their aspirations for the future.

and cafés to identify ways they can offer alfresco dining in accordance with the Government guidelines. Currently around 20 premises, including all five pubs and most of the larger restaurants, are offering this, creating a real Mediterranean feel to the town, particularly when the sun is shining. This is likely to become an established part of the town’s offer going forward.

Events for 2021 Work has also started on planning for a slow rebuild of the town’s well-established programme of events with effect from July, provided the social distancing requirements are

removed in late June as the Government has suggested.

The BID hopes to deliver, in conjunction with Broxbourne Council, the Vintage and Classic Car Day in July as well as a new food and drink event and the popular Give Your Town the Runaround run in September.

The BID also hopes to see the return of the Charter Fair in October and the Hoddesdon Loves Christmas event in November, although possibly at a reduced level compared to previous years.

Back to business Initial indications are that currently 77% of businesses are

open again and largely trading as normal, with a further 12% partially open. Although several businesses remained closed, the majority are expected to reopen and several new businesses have also opened. Meanwhile, footfall in the town centre has also increased significantly. With the next stage of lifting restrictions scheduled for Monday 17th May, it is anticipated over 90% of the town’s businesses will be open.

This compares very favourably with many neighbouring towns.

St Albans: the small cathedral city where ancient and modern combine in harmony With lockdown restrictions easing, we are finally once again able to explore beyond our immediate local area. This month, we visit Hertfordshire’s only city, St Albans.

Situated on the western side of the county, St Albans combines ancient with modern perfectly. Here’s our guide to making a day of it...

Shopping The cathedral city has a relatively compact centre.

At one time it boasted two drapers-cum-department stores (Fisk’s, later Blundells, in High Street and Green’s in Chequer Street) but these have long since closed. Today you’ll find a mix of unique independent shops along with branches of some of the higher end chains.

A great place to start a city centre tour is the medieval clocktower in the old High Street. Despite its name, this historic road is a small street which leads downhill from the Peahen crossroads. Among its shops are award-winning women’s fashion boutique The Dressing Room and Chloe James, a charming fashion and lifestyle boutique spread over several floors offering fashions and gifts.

Market Place and St Peter’s Street are always busy on Saturdays; Books on the Hill is a must-visit shop

and locally sourced, from blankets to candles, toiletries, jewellery and toys plus cards and wrapping paper, and all profits are donated to cancer charity Action Against Cancer.

Next door is The Village Arcade, a covered shopping arcade which leads to Abigail’s Tearoom overlooking the Vintry Garden at the back of the cathedral.

In neighbouring Heritage Place, you will find Mad Squirrel Tap, an offshoot of the independent brewery of the same name, as well as the city’s Lussmanns eatery and the brilliant independent record shop Empire Records.

From here, head downhill into George Street which is filled with independent shops and restaurants.

A highlight is the long-established James of St Albans antiques shop.

At the bottom of George Street,

you’ll find the cathedral on your left but if you continue downhill the road becomes the winding and picturesque Fishpool Street which has been used for many period TV shows including Foyle’s War. At the bottom of this is the peaceful St Michael’s Village area, featuring the riverside watermill Waffle House – ideal for lunches while watching the ducks watching you. There is often a queue (a good sign) but the staff are adept at getting people seated as quickly as possible and there is loads of outdoor (but covered) seating.

If you now retrace your steps and walk up High Street and to the Peahen crossroads, turn right into Holywell Hill where you’ll find the excellent independent bookshop Books on the Hill a few yards down, selling both new and secondhand books.

To the left of the crossroads is the broad, tree-lined St Peter’s Street which is, effectively, the main shopping street these days.

Along with Market Place, which leads into it, St Peter’s Street hosts the city’s market every Wednesday and Saturday. It is also home to Marks and Spencer and Waterstones as well as two open-air shopping centres, The Maltings and Christopher Place, one on either side of the street.

The Maltings contains national names such as TK Maxx, Hotel Chocolat, Oliver Bonas and the always useful Wilko, plus some independents including The Kiosk which is great for coffee or a quick lunch and has outdoor seating.

Christopher Place contains The White Company and Neal’s Yard as well as the independent Tomoko spirits shop.

DAYS OUT: ST ALBANS

Trace St Albans’ history from the Romans to the Normans and medieval times Exploring Once known as Verulamium and the third largest city in Roman Britain, St Albans has a rich Roman history to explore along with its 11th century Norman cathedral.

The cathedral, which dominates the skyline from every approach, has the longest nave in the country at 85 metres long and displays a striking selection of medieval wall paintings. It also contains the Shrine of St Alban, a site of pilgrimage for over 1,700 years.

The cathedral stands at the head of Verulamium Park which features ornamental lakes and the remains of the city’s ancient roman wall.

Here you’ll also find the Verulamium Museum (pictured right) displaying artefacts from the city’s Roman past including mosaics and the Sandridge Hoard of gold coins. Just a short walk away are the ruins, unearthed in 1847, of the Roman Theatre of Verulamium, built in 140AD and the only example of its kind in Britain, being a stage rather than an amphitheatre.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks on the edge of Verulamium Park is amongst those English hostelries that claim to be the country’s oldest. It’s certainly old, boasts a very proactive licensee and has a good local following.

There are so many places to see in St Albans but amongst those you shouldn’t miss are the clocktower in High Street, which is the only surviving medieval town belfry in England, and the relatively newly opened St Albans Museum and Gallery, an award-winning centre for arts and culture, that opened in St Peter’s Street in the former town hall building in 2018.

Among its highlights are the fully restored ancient courtroom and its subterranean cells.

Must-visits: The restored Odyssey and signal box l When cinemas open, pop down London Road to see what’s on at The Odyssey, an independent cinema that mixes its art deco setting with modern comforts including food and great seating, including small sofas and cabaret-style tables. The cinema, which is the sister of The Rex at Berkhamsted, shows a mix of blockbuster and art house films.

l Just round the corner from the Odyssey is St Albans South Signal Box on Ridgmont Road, a preserved Midland Railway box next to the mainline station.

Open at various times of the year to visitors, it has been beautifully restored by a team of enthusiasts and offers a real insight into the way our railways used to operate.

The letter of the law vs the spirit of the law

And who knows exactly who paid for the refurbishment of his Downing Street flat to Carrie’s liking?

However, enough of him for now.

I was struggling to find something new to write about tax this month, so I have been delving back through some of HMRC’s pronouncements to find something to share with you.

It is the official government definition of “tax avoidance”.

This is what the official government website defines it as: “Tax avoidance involves bending the rules of the tax system to gain a tax advantage that Parliament never intended.

I’ve been busy reading up on dictionary definitions

It involves operating within the letter, but not spirit, of the law.”

So, in order to clarify the position, I took to the dictionary and looked up the definition of the phrase “spirit of the law”.

Now, I’m sure you will all know this, but here is what I found: “The letter of the law, versus the spirit of the law, is an idiomatic antithesis.”

So what on earth does that mean?

Well, idiomatic is “using, containing or denoting expressions that are natural to a native speaker”.

So this means that the “spirit of the law” depends on the interpretation of the English language by a native speaker!

Which is interesting…

The language conundrum Remember that we are always being told by luminaries such as Stephen Fry that the English language is fluid. Also, there are many English words that have more than one meaning.

Here are a few examples of this: Artificial: Originally this meant “artfully and skilfully constructed”. Now it means “contrived or false”.

Brave: Originally this meant “showy or gaudy”.

Now it means “courageous”.

Doom: Originally this meant “a law judgement or decree”.

Now it means “fated, death or destruction”.

Evil: Originally this meant “uppity”. Now it means “malevolent and immoral”.

Facetious: Originally this meant “urbane and well mannered”.

Now it means “flippant”.

So, in the past, using the old meanings, I may have been considered by some to be facetious, but a bit evil.

And using the new meanings?

There are also words with even more meanings. For example the word “Set” has 464 different meanings!

So we are left to guess at what the tax law really means and it could be said that HMRC’s view of the “spirit of the law” changes like the Spring weather!

With so much doubt, and the different meanings of words, surely the “letter of the law” is preferable to the “spirit of the law”.

I guess the problem is that those who draft legislation these days have lost the skill of being precise with the meaning of words, giving us the ability to interpret the law, hence legal tax avoidance.

Just for good measure, and in case you are taking part in a pub quiz at which these things come up, here is some other wordplay to know about: Words with the same spelling and pronunciation that have different meanings are called Homonyms.

The same words with two different, opposite meanings are called Contronyms.

Viewing a show home? Here’s what to look out for...

If you are thinking of buying a new build home, one of the first steps you are likely to take will be to visit a show home.

There can be a lot to take in when looking around a show home for the first time. NHBC, the National House-Building Council, is the UK’s leading independent provider of warranty and insurance for new homes. It has produced some advice for wouldbe buyers to ensure they make the most of their visit to a show home – and some suggestions of what they should look out for...

INSIDE THE SHOW HOME Personalisation: Ask which areas of the house you can personalise to your own taste. In most cases, depending on the build stage, you will be able to choose the kitchen and bathroom finishes and you may be able to reposition radiators or add electrical sockets.

Safety: Many show homes will be located on or close to an active building site. Be sure to follow health and safety instructions.

Furniture fit: Take measurements of large items such as beds, sofas and dining room tables, and then measure up the space in the show

home to check your belongings will fit if you’re buying a similar sized home. It’s also a good idea to check what storage is available for vacuum cleaners, ironing boards and other large items.

Council Tax banding: Find out which Council Tax band the home will be allocated to, and what the current annual charge is for that band in your area. The sale price of the home in itself may not necessarily be an accurate guide.

Energy efficiency: Ask to see a copy of the home’s EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) as this will give you a good indication of how energy-efficient the home is (and how much your utility bills are likely to cost). Ask if the home

Open air theatre set to return for the summer

Three Inch Fools will perform on The Sunken Lawn at Knebworth in June

l Hertford Castle will host two performances on Saturday 19th June. Quantum Theatre will present Beatrix Potter’s family favourite The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny at 2.30pm and Shakespeare’s classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 7pm.

Knebworth House is staging three garden theatre performances during the summer, for which tickets are now available.

The first is on Wednesday 16th June, when The Three Inch Fools bring an inventive take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to Hertfordshire featuring all manner of musical instruments.

On Sunday 8th August, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men return to Knebworth’s Sunken Lawn to perform Macbeth at 7.30pm.

Hertford Theatre opens for a last hurrah before closing for redevelopment

Book now for Hertfordshire Festival of Music in June Tickets are now available for the 2021 Hertfordshire Festival of Music, which will run in and around Hertford from Friday 4th to Thursday 10th June.

As well as around the county town, performances and events will take place at venues such as Queenswood School in Brookmans Park and at Benslow Music Trust in Hitchin.

This will be the fifth incarnation of the festival, which was postponed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It has grown from a weekend event to a longer summer celebration of classical music, featuring international artists and ensembles alongside a series of innovative outreach and educational projects.

Hertford Theatre is to reopen briefly for a short three-week programme of live work and film showings after Monday 17th May before it closes its doors for redevelopment on 7th June.

All shows will be able to welcome a socially distanced audience and highlights include the ever-popular Horrible Histories with a new stage show, Gorgeous Georgians and Vile Victorians, from Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd May. A special show, Celebrating Hertford Theatre, will take place at 2pm and 5pm on Sunday 30th May and will feature previous Hertford panto stars looking back at the past and to the future.

Luna drive-in cinema comes to Knebworth House The Luna Cinema is bringing its outdoor drive-in film experience back to Knebworth House this month. It’s a retro experience but with state of the art sound and visuals, and became increasingly popular last year when Luna, the UK’s leading outdoor cinema company, pivoted during the Covid restrictions to put on socially distanced in-car showings rather than its traditional offering.

Luna says it hopes to begin its usual outdoor films in June but, for now, the drive-in experience can be enjoyed at Knebworth House every evening from Saturday 8th to Wednesday 26th May. Doors open at 7.30pm with the film showing each night from 8.45pm (8th-11th May) and 9pm (12th-26th May).

Meet the animals as Paradise Wildlife Park roars into action for the season Broxbourne’s Paradise Wildlife Park was finally able to reopen its doors last month and has been welcoming visitors back to see the animals, with limited numbers and social distancing measures in place.

Tickets must be booked online, up to 11pm the day before your visit, and cost £22 per adult or £20 for children under 16, over-60s and disabled people including carers.

The park is open seven days a

week with staggered entry times.

This is a great opportunity to see Paradise’s Land of the Tigers habitat, which was only open for three weeks before the latest lockdown. The indoor play area, Tumble Jungle, and the Blue

Lagoon remain closed for now.

A touch of culture in new exhibition at Henry Moore Studios & Gardens

Enjoy outdoor swimming this summer at Ware Priory Lido

Henry Moore Studios and Gardens in the hamlet of Perry Green, close to Much Hadham opened last month.

The home and workplace of 20th century sculptor Henry Moore, the venue features his work set in 70 acres of gardens and fields.

It is hoped that indoor facilities including the studios, Aisled Barn and the exhibition, This Living Hand, will be able to open on Wednesday 19th May after the next stage of the Government’s existing lockdown road map comes into force.

East Hertfordshire’s only outdoor swimming pool, Ware Priory Lido is a must-visit for this summer.

Situated in the grounds of Ware Priory, the lido has a 30m main pool and a smaller teaching pool (though this is out of use at present due to Covid rules).

There is also a smaller toddler play area, plus seating and grassed areas for sunbathing and picnics. The changing rooms and tuck shop are now open, though sun loungers are not currently available due to the restricted

New summer-long festival promises something for all the family If you fancy the festival experience but don’t want to travel too far from home, then a new season of events on our doorstep in Hertfordshire may be right up your street.

At Home Farm is a line-up of intimate outdoor events and residencies including live music, theatre, performance and experiences running from May through to September at Home Farm, which is part of the Aldenham Estate near Elstree.

Highlights include live music in the woods, long table alfresco feasts with top chefs, magical wild woodland tales, cycling Shakespeare performances, open-air theatre, back to nature kids’ adventures, a circus school, wild fitness and a yoga brunch club, all on different dates through Spring and summer.

At Home Farm is the realisation of a lifetime dream to host a festival season on this piece of Green Belt land for Jess Allen-Back, owner and founder of At Home Farm and Home Farm Glamping.

Jess has worked with festival curator Tessa Clarfelt to put this season together.

Great Balloon Race takes to the skies The biggest hot air balloons in the UK will be coming to the Shuttleworth Estate in Bedfordshire in June when it plays host to this year’s Great Balloon Race.

Up to 50 balloons of all shapes and sizes will fill the skies before returning to Shuttleworth for a dazzling night glow display at dusk accompanied by the Ibiza Classics Orchestra.

The Great Balloon Race Extravaganza will be at the estate for three nights, from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th June and will also feature a fireworks display and a breath-taking ‘sky dance’ – an aerial ballet – by circus theatre 24 axis magazine

And Showtime Circus will offer children the chance to learn aerial hoop and trapeze, tightrope, unicycle, juggling, hula hoop and more circus skills at a circus summer camp.

Wellbeing in the wild The wellbeing programme for At Home Farm will feature Wildfitness, one to one coaching sessions using the natural landscape; the Yoga Brunch Club and Mud and Guts, an outdoor adventure company that teaches children how to build shelters, light fires – and not get lost in the woods!

Outdoor dining continues as our pubs and restaurants look forward to the next stage of the road map Grateful diners have been flocking to our local pubs and restaurants that have outdoor spaces since the latest stage of lockdown easing on 12th April, and alfresco dining will continue to be the norm until at least Monday 17th May. That is the date the Government has indicated will be the next landmark on the road to a full reopening of society, and on that date, if all its Covid tests are met, all restaurants, pubs and coffee shops will once again be able to reopen indoor spaces, subject to social distancing requirements.

On that date it will be almost five full months since those venues were last able to open indoor spaces so please start booking up now and showing them your support.

While we await the latest news from the Government, here are some more local venues that have been investing in creating great outdoor spaces that will not only benefit them and us now, but also throughout the summer ahead…

Brookmans makes most of alfresco opportunities Brookmans in Brookmans Park has created extra space for outside dining whatever the weather.

It has installed a wide stretch tent in front of the pub offering plenty of spots to sit for everything from morning coffee to a late dinner, with rosewood tables and rattan armchairs piled with cushions and throws.

At night it glows under the warm white festoon lights that are draped backwards and forwards across the tent, with lanterns, hot water bottles and gently burning braziers keeping everything toasty.

A new covered space has also been created on the decking behind the pub, meaning twice as many guests can be welcomed outside, with plenty of spaces to find your spot.

This area has a very laid-back feel, with rattan sofas to sink into and high poseur dining tables.

The pub has launched a new Spring menu too.

Among its highlights are a deli board for sharing and a stone-baked Pizza Bianca with Gorgonzola, caramelised onions, crème fraiche, spinach and mushrooms.

Other main courses to try include

a risotto Primavera with Spring vegetables and pesto and the Dirty Vegan burger with Marmite onions, smoked cheese, tomato relish and fries.

All the pub’s cheeses are British, like Beauvale and Rutland Red, served with chutney, apple and Peter’s Yard crackers.

There is also British beef, vegetables and fruit, and free range pork and chicken on the menu.

Covered gazebo for Fox and Hounds The Fox and Hounds at Hunsdon is now well and truly ready for the summer, with its new heated and sheltered gazebo in place on its terrace, along with an outdoor bar. Open terrace tables are also available for dining while the pub’s large garden is reserved for drinkers – both are available on a first come first served walk-in basis.

Proove Pizza heads trio of new restaurants set to open in Hertford As if our restaurants reopening wasn’t exciting enough, there are some new eateries due to open their doors soon as well.

Among them is Proove Pizza, which is coming to the landmark former Café Rouge building in Hertford’s Parliament Square.

Proove is a small, growing group which has two existing sites in Broomhill, Sheffield and West Didsbury, Manchester.

It offers a full, Neapolitan-style pizza menu and also has a vegan menu and can adapt every pizza to be made with gluten-free dough at no extra cost.

Renovation work on the building is ongoing and Proove hopes to open soon.

Anexo, the tapas restaurant

which operated out of Hertford House hotel last summer, is back permanently and due to open soon in the former Lussmanns building known as the Egyptian House at 83 Fore Street.

With Lussmanns having moved farther along Fore Street last year, its notable former home has been quickly snapped up by the Shipton family who own Hertford House, and whose food and drink empire also includes The Quiet Man pub and Little Wu Chinese takeaway.

Meanwhile, the former Hummingbird pub at the other end of Fore Street is also set to reopen soon under the same name but operated by a different company.

Gourmet4 brings food hall concept to Harlow Gourmet4 food hall has opened at The Water Gardens shopping centre in Harlow.

Gourmet4 calls itself a “food marketplace” and is a proven concept around the country offering multiple food businesses within a food hall-style area.

It is aimed at a younger audience and transforms outdated restaurants into vibrant marketplaces, where multiple brands offer a variety of cuisines.

It is a tech-led company, enabling diners to order and pay using self-service screens that send each dish request to the appropriate brand.

It will soon be open for indoor dining, perfectly placed for 26 axis magazine

shoppers at the busy shopping centre, and is already offering takeaways through Deliveroo.

So far, two businesses are already open – Fat Burger, offering internationally and seasonallyinspired small plates; and Saucy Chicks, serving fried and smokegrilled chicken with sauce options to coat your chicken.

Also due to open soon are Smokin’ Buns (burgers), Ostrich Kick (more burgers!) and Smokey Joes (more chicken!).

Old World vs New World: what’s the difference?

The phrases Old World and New World get regularly thrown around in wine circles, but what do they actually mean?

Put simply, Old World wine refers to wine coming out of Europe, where wine has been made for thousands of years.

New World wine, on the other hand, refers to wine coming out of countries where winemaking has only begun in the last two or three centuries.

This includes places like Australia, New Zealand, USA, South America, Argentina and Chile. South Africa is considered New World, though it has been producing wine for well over 500 years so it seems almost a shame for it to be put in the “new” category.

What’s the difference?

While the lines are becoming increasingly blurred, Old World wines are generally more structural, rustic and savoury, with a heavy focus on terroir (weather, soil etc) and wines representing their particular vineyard site.

New World wines have tended to be made in a much more fruit-forward, ripe and clean-cut style, with a focus on consistency and evenness rather than unique vineyard-to-vineyard and vintage-to-vintage variation.

The most exciting thing about New World wines is the lack of strict regulations in place, which allows for more experimentation.

Just look at the Australians coming up with exciting blends such as D’Arenberg, and The Stump Jump adding Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne – something that should never go together, but that works amazingly well.
