New A120 bypass set to improve journey times The long awaited new A120 Little Hadham Bypass was set to open on Wednesday 22nd December, just after Axis went to press.

At the same time as the road has been built, a flood alleviation scheme has also been completed, protecting the communities of Little Hadham and Hadham Ford against flooding from three watercourses in the locality.

Like many infrastructure projects, the multi-million pound scheme had fallen behind schedule with both adverse weather events as well as the challenges of working during a pandemic adding to delays.

But once open the bypass will alleviate congestion (as well as air pollution) caused by traffic

Ahead of the opening, a fun event gave more than 500 people the

chance to walk, jog and cycle the new road and learn about the scheme, including the Roman archaeological findings discovered on site. A large 3.5

tonne puddingstone, so called as it has the appearance of a Christmas pudding, was also discovered and now takes pride of place in Little Hadham village.

Everyone urged to take part in RSPB Birdwatch The RSPB is inviting anyone living in Hertfordshire or Essex to join in its Big Garden Birdwatch 2022 this month, enabling the conservation charity to monitor how the country’s birds are faring.

Sign up to take part at rspb.org.uk and then simply count the different birds you see in your garden, from your balcony or in your local park for one hour between 28th and 30th January before reporting your findings.

During the pandemic, particularly when working from home, more of us became aware of the nature on our doorsteps. Last year a million people helped with the survey and the charity hopes that it might even be able to beat that number this year.

Hertfordshire’s smallest primary school is to close after Hertfordshire County Council concluded that low pupil numbers make it unsustainable.

Wareside Church of England Primary School is just a third full with 18 children on the roll at the beginning of the autumn term in September 2021, the lowest of any maintained primary school in the county.

Schools are mainly funded by an amount of money for each child in attendance and low pupil numbers mean it is challenging for schools to operate within budget as well as to maintain high quality teaching provision.

The school organises its pupils into two classes – one with year 1 and 2 pupils, and a second class for the remaining year groups.

Despite these constraints, it is rated Good

by Ofsted and both parents and the school’s governing body fought the closure proposal.

New proposals emerge for employment park Developer Wrenbridge is preparing to submit revised proposals to East Herts Council for land at St James’ Park in Bishop’s Stortford.

The land sits on the south eastern edge of a site known as Bishop’s Stortford South for which another developer, Countryside, obtained planning permission for a mixed use development including homes, schools, a care home, local centre and employment space.

While Countryside is currently working on the residential element of the site, it has sold the land earmarked for employment use to Wrenbridge who, last June, submitted what is known as a “reserved matters” application for it to East Herts Council.

Such applications typically seek approval for details not included in the outline planning permission that already exists – such as site layout, access and appearance.

This revealed Wrenbridge was planning a logistics site comprising seven warehouse-style units with 24/7 operation, something that was immediately opposed by local residents who had expected a business centre to be built.

They raised concerns about the closeness to the new homes and schools and the impact of HGV and lorry movements on the already congested road network.

NEWS IN BRIEF Council looking to set up citizens’ panel

The developer withdrew the plans which it said it was revising and since November has been consulting with local people.

It now suggests replacing two of the warehouse units originally proposed with seven small units, while new designs soften the overall development’s appearance.

While the use classes for which planning permission already exists have not changed, the developer’s proposals refer to an “employment park” rather than a logistics site.

They say the development is being built speculatively so no specific businesses are set to occupy the buildings and interest shown so far

comes from tech-based companies looking to bring manufacturing in-house, automotive and aviation technology companies looking to expand or relocate and advanced manufacturing. Many of these businesses might require a low level of distribution but this would tend to be by car or small HGV. Largescale logistics users such as Amazon or Royal Mail would not be encouraged, the developer says.

Residents, local businesses and organisations are being invited to join a new Broxbourne Citizens’ Panel.

The council is recruiting people who are willing to give their views about council services and local initiatives and to act as a ‘critical friend’ on policy and decision making, which will help the council understand local priorities.

The panel is open to any resident living in the Borough of Broxbourne who is aged over 16 and to any Broxbourne-based business or organisation.

Anyone interested in taking part should register online at Broxbourne.gov.uk/citizenspanel after which the council will select individuals or businesses to consult with.

All data captured will be kept confidential and not used for any other purpose.

‘Technical issue’ to blame for Hartham Leisure Centre delay

Broxbourne awards to seek unsung heroes

An “unforeseen technical issue” is being blamed for the failure of the swimming pool at Hertford’s Hartham Leisure Centre to reopen as planned in the autumn.

The pool, which has been closed for refurbishment works, remained shut all the way up to Christmas with a date for its reopening now not expected until this month.

The leisure centre is undergoing an £8million refurbishment programme which will eventually see a new extension to the existing building housing a state of the art new gym, changing facilities, children’s play area and café.

Existing fitness facilities remain open while works are underway.

However, the pool has remained closed since lockdown restrictions were eased last Spring to enable work to be carried out including

3-year plan to make Harlow best town in UK Making Harlow “the best town in the country” is the aim of a new three-year plan agreed by Harlow Council in December.

Council leader Russell Perrin says that the town has been a great place for people to live and work for the past 75 years but to continue its upward trajectory requires dedication and a strategy to drive regeneration and renewal.

The council wants to make the town the best in the country to raise a family, send children to school, start a business and simply “to live and to be”.

And the new strategy provides the overall direction for the council’s day to day work and decision making to ensure this is achieved.

Priorities include regenerating and transforming Harlow’s estates and town centre, restoring pride in the streets and estates, radically improving council services while providing value for money for council tax payers and supporting residents and businesses now and in the future as the town recovers from the pandemic.

The strategy focuses on four key themes: economic growth, social cohesion, safeguarding the environment and being an efficient

council. Within the strategy are the ambitions and work priorities which will be delivered by the council’s seven cabinet members.

Cllr Perrin said: “If Harlow is to continue being a great place to live and work, if it is to continue to be a place of enterprise and innovation, if it is to continue as a green and pleasant place in our country’s landscape, then it will require the administration I lead to drive its regeneration and renewal.

“This plan shifts our efforts in

regenerating our town from low to high gear. It allows us to get on with the job of making Harlow the best town in the country and extending opportunity and prosperity to everyone in our town.

“This council will be the main driver in making Harlow an even better place to be, but, above all else we will be a council that is there to serve the people and businesses of this town. That is what our plan seeks to do and that is what we will deliver.”

Help shape county’s recovery by taking part in Covid survey Local people are invited to take part in a survey which aims to assess the impact of coronavirus on Hertfordshire’s residents and community groups and help shape the county’s recovery plans.

It is being conducted by Hertfordshire’s Community Reassurance Cell, on behalf of the Local Resilience Forum.

The forum is a partnership of all of Hertfordshire’s public services including emergency services, local councils, NHS and Environment Agency. It plans, prepares and responds to localised incidents and emergencies.

The Community Reassurance Cell was established within the LRF in March 2020 to provide leadership and reassurance to residents during the coronavirus pandemic.

coronavirus on their lives, what support is needed and how that has changed since the start of the pandemic.

The survey results will be used to shape the county’s ongoing recovery plans, ensuring support is targeted where it is needed most.

This is the second such survey; the first found mental health was the biggest concern for residents,

followed by economic hardship and the effect of the pandemic on disadvantaged groups including people with disabilities, BAME communities and young people with special educational needs.

East Herts Council leader Linda Haysey is also chair of the Community Reassurance Cell and said: “Hearing from our local communities is absolutely vital so that we understand their needs now, and how we can help them cope with the unpredictable nature of the Covid-19 pandemic in the future. We’re proud of Hertfordshire’s incredible community spirit as residents, businesses and community groups continue to come together and adapt. We want to know how we can best support those efforts, as we all learn to live with Covid-19.”

The first of more than 36,000 trees have been planted as part of Hertfordshire County Council’s efforts in the Queen’s Green Canopy, a project which encourages people to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

The initiative encourages everyone from individuals to scout and guiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and businesses to plant trees during the official planting season (October 2021 to March 2022 and again from October 2022 to the end of the Jubilee year) to create a legacy in honour of the Queen’s leadership of the nation, which will benefit future generations.

Collect a lateral flow test from your library Bishop’s Stortford and Hoddesdon libraries are among nine across Hertfordshire that are offering help to the county’s public health team by becoming collection points for lateral flow tests.

The collection points are for asymptomatic people only – anyone symptomatic must book a Covid test online instead.

Hertfordshire’s Director of Public Health Jim McManus said: “Lateral flow tests are a vital tool to help us combat the spread of this virus and residents are encouraged to do a test twice a week to do so. These tests help to rapidly identify asymptomatic people who are at a high likelihood of spreading Covid 19 without any knowledge of doing so. They keep yourself and everyone around you safe, at a time of year where other illnesses like colds and flu are more prevalent.”

Love Hoddesdon BID to seek re-election for further 5 years 2021 closed with a further surge in Covid threatening to have an impact on Hoddesdon town centre and its businesses.

As 2022 begins, Love Hoddesdon BID Ltd, the not-for-profit company representing the business improvement district (BID) covering the town centre, will continue to help local businesses survive and thrive.

This year Love Hoddesdon will also be seeking to convince the 200+ local businesses of the benefit of re-electing them for a further term in Autumn 2022.

Which trends will we see for weddings in 2022?

In spite of the current bleak midwinter situation with Covid, most people expect weddings to be much more normal as we get deeper into 2022, following the on-off restrictions we have endured over the past two years.

But the challenges thrown up by the need for smaller, and different, weddings have led to a bit of a re-set for many couples considering what their big day will be like.

Sober weddings Alcohol has traditionally played rather a big part in wedding celebrations, but many couples are now opting to at least put more alcohol-free options on menus.

The so-called ‘sober-curious’ movement is having a moment.

Rented wedding dresses You might not be convinced that Boris Johnson has got a lot right recently, but his wife Carrie has started something by renting her wedding dress. More and more brides are now hiring one or more of their outfits for their wedding.

Back garden receptions Backyard weddings have been booming, fuelled by the pandemic and the necessity for smaller weddings. Granted, if you have a tiny courtyard you might struggle but those with larger gardens are now using them to great effect.

Two-piece wedding dresses The single flowing gown may never be a thing of the past but wedding website Hitched.co.uk reported searches for two-piece dresses went up by 176 per cent last year. Elegant and contemporary, two-piece dresses can be easily transformed throughout the day.

Hertford Is My Home exhibition at museum

A new app has been launched offering a range of activities in Hertfordshire for young children to have fun and learn.

It is called 50 Things To Do Before You’re Five and includes activities to support young children’s learning that have been inspired by parents and carers and then developed by specialists.

The app offers a list of 50 free or low cost activities (under £20 for a family of four) that early years settings, schools and parents can experience with their child or children around Hertfordshire.

Hertfordshire County Council commissioned the Herts For Learning Early Years team to ensure all activities within the app included links to local services and places to visit, including parks, waterways, woodlands, libraries, museums and historical sites. Ideas include

RSPB group to learn about life of WH Hudson The SE Herts Local Group of the RSPB is holding a talk by Zoom on Tuesday 25th January which both members and non-members can access.

Conor Jameson will give the talk, entitled Idle Days in Patagonia and the Home Counties – the WH Hudson story.

Hudson was a celebrated author and naturalist who was highly

influential in the creation of the RSPB and the modern day conservation movement.

Ware’s Waterside Inn reopens with a new look for the new year

The Waterside Inn in Ware has reopened after a £300,000 refurbishment with a new look inside and out and new menus.

In Bridgefoot, at the top of the High Street, the pub has an enviable location by the River Lea. Its pretty riverside garden with strings of festoon lighting is always hugely popular in the summer months and is suitable for winter use as well.

It has traditional picnic style tables along the river’s edge along with café-style seating and cosy covered areas offering shelter should the weather be typically British.

Inside the spacious inn, the refurbishment works have married traditional character with modern style.

Furnishings are rustic with comfortable booths, generous family tables and window seats where you can watch the outside world go by.

Food is served daily between 11am and 9pm with a main menu offering everything from pub classics and grills to pasta, salads and comforting pies.

Sandwiches, available until 4pm, include everything from a chicken club to a fish finger sandwich.

A separate lunch menu, available until 4pm Monday to Friday, offers a selection of great value dishes including lasagne served with garlic bread, a classic burger and breaded scampi and chips from just £6 each.

At weekends there are two brunch options available with a

“tipsy” menu offering a brunch dish and two drinks for just £12 per person or a “bottomless” option with a brunch dish and unlimited drinks during your 90-minute sitting for £27 per person.

Afternoon teas, which must be pre-booked, are served daily with both “classic” and “tipsy” choices offered.

Brookmans earns 3 star rating from Sustainable Restaurant Association Brookmans in Brookmans Park has been officially recognised for its actions to reduce its impact on climate change and help people to make sustainable choices when eating out with a Three Star Food Made Good rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association.

The pub and its owner Peach Pubs were given the accolade for the steps they have taken to be a better business and make a difference to people and the planet.

To achieve the rating, they worked with the SRA to complete a detailed assessment of the business, looking at 10 key areas ranging from celebrating local and seasonal food and sourcing fish responsibly to treating their people fairly and eliminating food waste.

When combined to provide an overall performance across three key pillars – Sourcing, Society and Environment – Peach and the pub were given a total Food Made Good rating of 73% earning them the Three Star status.

Brookmans’ focus on putting local and seasonal produce on its menu

was highlighted by a score of 80%, while the way it looks after the people who cook in its kitchen and run its bar and restaurant achieved 76%. Its efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle were also recognised with a 76% score and the chefs’ hard work on eliminating food waste was rewarded with 72%.

The alternative meaning of Dry January The Dry January campaign began in 2012 as an initiative by Alcohol Change UK, a British charity, to “ditch the hangover, reduce the waistline and save some serious money by giving up alcohol for 31 days”.

While it is, of course, a laudable idea, personally I would have chosen February for it as it’s a shorter month!

The Loire valley is currently a very trendy region.

Its cool climate means grapes often under-ripen thereby producing a lighter example of these grape varieties.

Sancerre is the most famous region where you can find red, rosé (Pinot Noir) as well as whites (Sauvignon Blanc).

Sancerres typically have a fresh minerality with a nip of acidity.

One example I can recommend is the Jean-Jacques Auchere Sancerre 2020 at £18.50 (pictured below).

It’s a dry, charming wine that will seduce your taste buds with fruity and elegant body, pale in colour. The nose is intense, dominated by citrus, lychee, grapefruit and peach. Round and powerful in the mouth, it offers good acidity with pleasant length.

But if this fails to move you, dear reader, then there is always dry cider, dry vermouth and dry gin.

One way or another, Dry January is suddenly sounding like a wonderful idea!
