AANA Endorsement of External Organization Documents

AANA Involved In Development of a Joint Statement

1. The AANA Board of Directors may endorse a document developed by an external organization if the AANA has actively participated (e.g., through a liaison or committee member) in the development of the document.

2. An endorsement recommendation will be submitted to the Board of Directors by the liaison or committee involved in document development to endorse the joint statement.

AANA Not Involved In Document Development

1. If an external organization requests AANA endorsement, but there was no AANA involvement in the document development, the Board of Directors may consider endorsement if any one of the following criteria are met:

a. the document has direct implications for the nurse anesthesia profession;

b. the AANA has an existing document consistent with the requesting organization’s document; or,

c. the AANA believes that the document has benefit for the patient, profession of nursing or healthcare in general.

2. Prior to any Board of Directors endorsement decision, the appropriate AANA committee(s) review all external requests for document endorsement.

3. Based on review of the requesting external organization, research methodology,

content accuracy, references, and overall applicability of the document, the appropriate committee(s) will submit a recommendation to the Board of Directors.

4. If there is an affirmative endorsement decision, the AANA will inform the external organization and communicate the endorsed document to AANA members through communication channels (e.g., website, social media, electronic or print newsletters).

Request for Comment and/or Endorsement of AANA Documents by External Organization

When an AANA document references other healthcare professionals and/or influences collaborative healthcare practice, external organization review, comment, and/or endorsement may be sought to provide additional perspective and expertise. Member and public open comment periods are held for various documents prior to Board of Director approval. The open comment process is outside of the scope of this policy.

Request for External Comment

1. The AANA may request comment from related external organizations during the evidence-based process for document development by the Practice Committee. See the Policy on Evidence-based Process for Practice-related Documents.

2. Other AANA committees, task forces, staff, etc. may also request external organization feedback during their work.

Request for External Endorsement

1. Following Board of Directors adoption of an AANA document, the applicable AANA committee may recommend or the Board of Directors may seek endorsement from external organizations.

2. Board-adopted AANA documents available for endorsement will not be edited or modified by endorsing organizations.

3. Upon receipt of an external organization endorsement, the AANA will note the external organization(s) on the document (e.g., list organization(s) name and/or logo on the document), post the document to the AANA website, and communicate the endorsement to AANA members through communication channels.
