Purpose

AANA Document Definitions
These definitions are intended to assist Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), also known as nurse anesthesiologists or nurse anesthetists, and others in distinguishing the different types of documents contained in the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) Professional Practice Manual for the CRNA. The AANA Practice Committee utilizes a systematic evidence-based review process to analyze current literature and research to develop or revise all documents contained in the manual. Ultimately, the AANA Board of Directors approves all documents based on the recommendation of the Practice Committee.

Policy Considerations
The ethical responsibilities of the CRNA as a member of the nurse anesthesiology profession. The Code of Ethics consists of principles of conduct and professional integrity that guide the decision-making and behavior of the CRNA.
Guidance to CRNAs, external entities, and other stakeholders regarding the professional scope of nurse anesthesiology practice. The scope of practice broadly defines the professional roles, functions, and responsibilities that CRNAs perform. The scope of practice reflects the accredited education of CRNAs, is supported by the credential and the credentialing organization through evaluation and formal assessment, and accounts for the dynamic and evolving nature of nurse anesthesiology practice.
Evidence-based statements that describe the minimum level of responsibilities and care requirements for nurse anesthesiology practice.
Evidence-based recommendations that are intended to optimize patient care by assisting CRNAs, other anesthesia professionals, and patients in healthcare decision-making for specific circumstances. Guidelines are not a substitute for the clinical judgment of the CRNA or other anesthesia professional, and do not establish legally enforceable requirements or responsibilities.
The AANA official stance, policy, or recommendation on a specific topic or issue related to nurse anesthesiology practice.
Evidence-based practice considerations are intended to provide assistance and resources related to current or emerging aspects of nurse anesthesiology practice. The level of evidence for specific recommendations may not be as high as for guidelines or the topic is broad and not suitable to be a guideline. Practice considerations should be tailored to specific circumstances considering resources, staffing, training, and patient population.
Documents intended to assist in the development of facility policies that impact nurse anesthesiology practice. Policy considerations should be tailored to the specific patient population, staffing, and facility needs and resources.
