AALT Technician: the Journal of AALT

How do your summer programs differ from Winter WordsWorth and do you have a winter program each year? WinterWordsWorth traditionally has been run in Edmonton but this year we decided to head back to Kamp Kiwanis, outside the hamlet of Bragg Creek Alberta, our summer location. The Winter session is a short taste of the WordsWorth experience. We typically hire two artist-instructors and all young writers attend those courses without option. In the summer, the young writers have a choice of three classes per time slot, which, once chosen, they attend for the entire week while at camp. In the winter, there are two courses during the day and another one at night. In the summer we have offered four classes during the day and a less formal session at night, often run by the talented supervisors. What both summer and winter sessions have in common is we make use of the incredible woodsy setting of Kamp Kiwanis, including the pool for rousing games of Death Polo in the summer, and high energy performances, dances, and cafe nights in the evenings. Many of the participants are also musical and so our evenings are spent singing to guitar and piano accompaniment both inside and around the campfire. One night we bring in a DJ and dance the night away, another night we bring in a band. The Fugitives have come back for many years and are a WordsWorth favourite. We have also had performances by The Pity Dates and Mercury Audio, both local indie bands. Another cool feature for both camps is our bedtime story time which is read just before lights out by one of the authors to the campers who come to listen with pillows and blankets and dressed ready for bed.
