The Journal of the Alberta Association of Library Technicians

EDITOR’S NOTES May 2014 This year’s conference theme is “Honouring our History, Building our Future.” With that in mind, I’ve been thinking about the history and future of the AALT Technician. The journal has been an integral part of AALT for the past 40 years, first as a physical hardcopy journal and more recently as an onlineonly journal in PDF format. Past issues have included information and articles to inform us, help us, excite us, and fuel our passion for our careers and for the work that we do. But these articles don’t come out of thin air: most are written by members and friends of AALT who become excited about a subject and want to share their excitement with their peers. This year, I particularly wish to thank Liz Johnson, Margie Meakin, Janell Hurdman, and Beverley Rayner for their invaluable contributions to the AALT Technician. You ladies helped to make the journal more than just a vehicle for the Board to inform the membership of upcoming events. This will be the last edition of the AALT Technician with myself as Editor, as I find I must step down for personal reasons. I hope that the new Editor selected at the Annual General Meeting will find working with the AALT Board as rewarding as I have, and I hope

he or she will take this journal into the future as a publication we can all be proud of. I am looking forward to the upcoming conference, where I hope to get to know many more AALT members, either in the sessions, at social events, or while I’m manning the registration table. Please stop and say Hi! And while we’re looking forward to Conference 2014, let’s look back at a picture

from Conference 1978 that our President for 2014-15, Lynda Shurko, recently unearthed from the AALT archives. See you at River Cree! Lorraine Butchart Journal Editor, 2013-14

PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS This has been a very challenging year for me. Personally many things changed and I had to make peace with my life constantly rearranging itself. I guess one of the only things I could count remaining consistent was the change happening. Within AALT, change also seemed a constant factor. Fortunately the Board had some wonderful members who stepped up despite all of the change; these people I thank sincerely. I would not have made it through the year without you hard work, perseverance, and support. (And willingness to show up in Red Deer at Board meetings!)

BY JANET KILLIPS

It is time for me to take a year off to stand back, look at what happened, and most importantly, look at what wonderful things will proceed in the coming year. Undoubtedly I will be back on the Board later, but for now it is time to allow Lynda to lead AALT in the direction she envisions. I know she will shine! I leave you with the following words of advice, no matter what you are doing: “Read the manual!” If there isn’t a manual, create one for the future. Don’t be afraid of change. Step outside of your comfort zone and don’t fear failure; you only truly fail when you refuse to get back up. Trust those around you and believe in those who have come before, while having faith in those who will follow. Most importantly, read the manual! Janet Killips President AALT 2013-2014

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AT CONFERENCE 2014 Friday, May 23, 9:00 a.m. Denise Miller: The Art & Craft of Storytelling

Saturday, May 24, 9:00 a.m. Ruben Nelson: The Future of Libraries

Denise’s workshop is offered in two parts: 1) The Art. Denise shares stories of selfdiscovery, acceptance, understanding, courage and love in a way that only a true storyteller can. This program can be customized to include a Q&A on Denise’s use of story for educational and therapeutic purposes. 2) The Craft. Participants learn how to do it themselves. Participants will learn how to truly express themselves and will get to know each other in an engaging fun and relaxed atmosphere. They will come away with a real awareness and feedback about how they can improve and deepen their storytelling. Story has proven results in relating – across the board. It’s for educators, health care professionals, social workers, librarians, HR professionals and literary artists.

Ruben Nelson is a freelance intellectual, social commentator and activist. He has spent his life exploring and seeking to understand the forces that are now re-shaping our lives, our world and our future. Today, he is Canada’s leading practitioner and teacher of the next generation of strategic foresight. Ruben’s research into long-term civilizational change has led him to believe that the 21st Century is a rare hinge of history. The emerging conditions of the 21st Century will require every existing society to embrace a fundamental transformation.

Denise Miller is an internationally acclaimed Métis storytelling artist with a unique ability to engage, entertain and educate. In over 25 years of storytelling, she has presented for education groups at all levels from elementary to post-secondary students, teachers and instructors, for health and wellness conferences and library and literary events of all kinds. She is the author of Storytelling for Life, a reference book for teachers, librarians, career counsellors, health and wellness, social service and human resource professionals. Denise’s presentation is fun, high content and customizable. The Art & Craft of Storytelling brings new applications to the ancient art of storytelling. Audience members will learn that stories empower, engage, bind and bond us. Stories teach us how to negotiate differences, train us to think – and bring about healing.

At its heart, then, strategic foresight is not about succeeding as a modern/Industrial form of civilization, but evolving beyond it. The core question is, “How can we learn to cooperate with our own evolution as persons, families, groups and a whole society?” Over the years, Ruben has written extensively on a wide range of topics, including paradigm change, strategic foresight 2.0 as the new cognitive work of leadership, the societal implications of microelectronic technologies, the emerging information society, 21st Century social policy, and the future of democracy. He has also designed new organizations and government programs. Ruben has taught at Queen’s University and the University of Calgary. He is a graduate of Queen’s University and Queen’s Theological College in Kingston, Canada. He has also studied at United Theological College, Bangalore, India and the University of Calgary. Today, he is Executive Director of Foresight Canada.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS Along with the annual conference comes AALT’s Annual General Meeting, when the most important business of the association is conducted, including the election of the next year’s Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is made up of regular members of AALT. No special knowledge, skills, or abilities are required, beyond what is required for membership in AALT: any member can be nominated for and elected to a position on the Board— even you! Yes, you! The fact is, without members willing to take on the responsibility and excitement of a board position, the Board of Directors cannot exist—and without a Board of Directors, AALT cannot exist. Think for a moment what that would mean: no annual conference, no AALT Technician, and most importantly, no voice in the library community and beyond for Alberta Library Technicians. So if you have a few hours a month you can spare for AALT, or if you know an AALT member who you think could make a positive contribution as a board member, please consider nominating that person, and asking that person to nominate you, for one of these positions available on the 2014-2015 Board of Directors of AALT. President-Elect: Elected for a one-year term, followed by a one-year term as President. Secretary: Gathers, prepares, and distributes material for the Board meetings; transcribes minutes & distributes to Board members; maintains & distributes the Board Handbook; maintains AALT's storage unit & archives; process-

es correspondence; oversees printing needs & distribution of the association. Treasurer: Oversees and reports on all financial activities of AALT. Member at Large: Chairs the Professional Development Group, the Mentoring Committee and the Conference Committee; administers the AALT Mentoring Program. Marketing Director: Coordinates ordering, distribution and sale of AALT promotional products; maintains a current inventory of AALT memorabilia; promotes AALT functions and events; chairs the Marketing Committee. Website Director: Updates and maintains the AALT website; administers the AALT List serve and on-line registration system; chairs the Website Committee. Membership Director: Chairs the Membership Committee, Membership Survey Committee and Salary Survey Committee; issues receipts and membership cards for paid membership dues; maintains membership database; produces annual membership directory for distribution; creates, distributes, promotes and compiles data from the biannual AALT Salary Survey. Journal Co-Editor (2 positions): Compiles the contents for the AALT Technician; chairs the Journal committee. Conference Co-Chair (2 positions): Chairs the conference committee, oversees and coordinates all aspects of conference planning and realization.
