Wings of Imagination
A school magazine is very close to my heart. This is where I made my first attempt to write for public consumption. The thrill of putting thoughts to words, playing with them, jumbling and untangling was fascinating.
Life brings everything back full circle. Here, I am writing a message for the very first edition of our school magazine, Udaan!
A journey of life traverses on two tracks: one that of the mind and the other of action. We are on a mission to strengthen these two tracks for our children in a playful and joyful way.
A school magazine resonates with the spirit of such thoughts and actions, and I wish every reader, especially our students, parents, and their near and dear ones will find an opportunity to soak in the beautiful and precious content poured from the heart.
I believe that it’s important to dream. One must dwell on that dream until it develops, takes shape, and embarks on a flight. Whether they soar high or shatter on the ground, it teaches us not to give up and to have the courage and motivation to dream again.
I am so glad to be pondering with my pen and paper again, this time to see the wings of imagination taking their maiden flights, piloted by our students, faculty, and staff!
To me, ‘Udaan’ is not just a word or a magazine. It is the quintessential promise to fly and make life a sky full of opportunities and possibilities.
Keep imagining until you take those flights and enjoy the immense joy of uplifting yourselves!

Joyful learning is an innovative educational approach that emphasizes engagement, curiosity, and the inherent pleasure of discovery in the learning process. In today’s rapidly changing world, where traditional methods often prioritize rote memorization and standardized testing, joyful learning offers a refreshing alternative that nurtures students' natural desire to explore and understand their surroundings.
Moreover, joyful learning reduces the stress typically associated with academic performance by creating a safe environment where mistakes are viewed as valuable learning opportunities rather than failures. This cultivates resilience and a growth mindset, empowering students to tackle challenges with confidence and creativity. Additionally, the emphasis on collaboration promotes essential social skills, helping students develop empathy and teamwork as they work together to solveproblemsandshareideas.Thebenefitsofjoyfullearning extend beyond academic achievement; it instills a lifelong love for learning, inspiring students to pursue their passions and seek knowledge beyond the classroom. Ultimately, joyful learning transforms education from a mere obligation into an exciting journey, preparing students not just for tests, but for life, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and enthusiasm needed to navigate the complexities of the future. By fostering a joyful learning environment, we can inspire a generation of curious, compassionate, and innovative thinkers ready to make a positive impact on the world.

Durga Puja offered me something unbelievable. You believe me or not it is up to you. Once I was at my aunt's house in Medinipur. I was watching the cultural function in the pandal. There was a huge crowd at the function. Gradually the crowd moved back. There were many chairs where people were gossiping. And there were a few empty chairs too. I took a chair and sat on it. All the chairs were filled up except those chairs. I was watching the function.

Then an old lady came to me and said, "Please give me a chair, I will sit." I said, "There are a few more chairs. You can take any one of them and please be there." The lady gazed at me in a strange way and said nothing more. After that I got busy watching the programme. But after one performance I felt restless for that old lady. I was feeling a slight pain for my words to her. My eyes were wandering in search of the lady here and there around.
For me it was like I could see her wrinkled face wearing a white saree and holding a short walking stick in her right hand. I could not forget her strange look from inside the long veil. Her eyes were full of mercy and pity for me even after being refused when asked for a simple chair to enjoy the performance going in the stage. I thought she would be behind our row. Then I was about to give her my chair. I looked for her but I found her nowhere. I wondered who she was. I thought deeply for a while. An awe started flowing like lightning all through my nerves and veins. Then I realized that she was our Maa Durga. Maa might appear there to meet me in a different way. My tears were rolling down on my shaky cheeks. I rushed back to the Mandap to have a look at Maa Durga. I felt like she was smiling at me. After a while I shared the whole incident with my mother. Whenever this incident flashes in my mind my eyes get filled with tears.

Once a man lost his house, family and one hand in an accident. He used to beg on the streets of Delhi. He had a hobby of reading books. Suddenly, one day he thought about buying a book. So he was thinking how he could get the money to buy a book. After some time he saw a note of Rs 50 lying on the road. He went and picked it up. For some time he looked for the owner and finally he couldn't find the owner, so he kept the money. Though he had nothing to eat, he could not resist himself from buying a book. So he went to a bookstore in hungry stomach. When he walked inside the store, the shopkeeper looked at him and said, “Go away, beggars do not come here to buy books.” The man said, “But I have money to buy a book.” The shopkeeper asked, “How much money do you have?
The beggar said, “I have 50 rupees.”
The shopkeeper said, “We do not even have a single book of 50 rupees, now go away!” The beggar accepted his defeat and went away from the shop. He was sad and was restless for hunger but still he saved that money to buy a book. After thinking for a while he thought that he would look for a job the next day. The following morning, he saw a car washing place nearby. He went inside and asked the owner, “Could I get a job here?”
The owner said, “Yes, you can get a job here, but only under one condition.”
The beggar said, “What is the condition?”
The owner replied, “ The condition is that we will pay you 50 rupees a day.
The beggar agreed with the owner. After that the owner showed him his work.
The beggar spent his day working hard on washing cars and when all the work was done, he got his 50 rupees. Then he thought that - I have not eaten for two days. So I should eat some food. He got some food and ate it and he was tired after working that much. So he went to sleep early there in the garage. Everyday he bought some food for RS 30 and saved 20 rupees. This continued for many days and when reached almost thousand rupees, he bought some nice clothes for himself and when he had around 5000 rupees he started living in a house on rent and on that same day he went to the bookshop where he had visited many days back. He purchased two books for 350 rupees and came back home . After many years of hard work he became rich. He built a big house and purchased a nice car . A few days later he got married with a girl and they started living happily together.
I go to school everyday, to learn from my teachers of what they say.
Friends make me laugh and gay, without whom I cannot stay. Teaching and learning become effective, as the Principal and teachers take initiative. Cleanliness is next to godliness, is revealed from our sweeper uncles' wariness.
Hats off to AGFS, Shower your love always.

Just like every year this year I also went to the mountains with my parents. Our train was from Asansol junction .But the train was too late, so we had to wait for the whole night. At 4 am, the train arrived. After a deep sleep on the train, next morning, we reached Haridwar, the gateway to Char Dham. First day we visited Mansa mandir through a cable car. The cable car journey was very scary but interesting. In the evening we enjoyed the special milkshake which was filled with dry fruits. It was very cold and raining as well. So we went back to the hotel, finished our dinner and took a deep sleep. Next day we visited many sites. We saw several temples and all of them were full of red faced monkeys.
Next day we rented a car to visit Dehradun and Mussoorie. At Dehradun I found awesome Robbers cave, Sahastradhara and Dehradun zoo.We reached Mussoorie in the evening and the temperature was very low. From the balcony of our hotel, the lights between the hills were mesmerizing. We enjoyed momo and hot chocolate in a cafe. There was snowfall at night. I enjoyed the snow. The whole area was white and beautiful. While returning back to Haridwar we visited a famous forest research institute in Dehradun.
On the very next day, we took a holy bath in the water of mother Ganga which was very frightening as well as refreshing. We experienced the holy Ganga Aarti in the evening.
On the day before returning back, we made a short trip to Rishikesh, Ram jhula, Lakshman jhula, Paramartha Niketan Ashram.I explored the international tourists who were also attending yoga classes and Ganga Aarti. We enjoyed the trip a lot and brought back sweet and happy memories which would stay with me life long.

Nirala- the splendid name of an old age home. The environment is as beautiful as the name. Suhasini has been living here for the last three years. She likes everything about the calm environment here. Everyone here is around her age. At first she felt upset- especially for her little grandson. Eventually she gets habituated with its daily life. This is how her life goes on. Sometimes her sons and daughters- in- law come to visit her – this is how she has adapted all to her life.
In front of Suhasini…s room, there is a small balcony from where one can see not the Sunrise, but the Sunset very well. That…s why Suhasini sits here every afternoon. She finds the meaning of life by watching the Sunset everyday. The Sun sets slowly through the chirping of birds returning home — the whole sky turns red. She feels a sort of connection with the sinking sun and also relishes the beauty of colour pervaded the sky. Gradually that redness starts to disappear in the lap of darkness.
Like everyday, today in the evening, Suhasini has wrapped a thin sheet around her and sat in her familiar place — hoping to enjoy the beauty of nature at the end of the day. Since this morning, she has been remembering the life she left behind. Suhasini was very lonely since her childhood. When she came to her bad - tempered husband…s house, she was only twelve years old. Her in-law…s house was felt like a prison where her mother- in- law, husband, brother-in-law – all were ill- tempered and horrible people who knew nothing but to rule. And the little Suhas her job was entirely to do all the housework from morning to evening. Due to heavy pressure of work, unknowingly she used to make mistakes and for that reason, she had to tolerate reproach. Sometimes, she even had to be beaten. The only God - like man was her father- in law – the only one who was affectionate to her. This is how her life was going on. Meanwhile, a few years later, she gave birth to her first son. She used to forget all her sorrow and pain by having him. Then the days passed - she gave birth to six more children— five sons and two daughters in all, serving them in their sickness, getting up early to cook for them during their exams.
In this way, she reached her old age gradually. Being mentally alone forever, she spent her life for others. Her husband never thought to show love for her and he never took her anywhere. One day, her husband died in a road accident. She was broken at first, but within a short period, Suhasini took control of the family with her sons. She managed all challenges alone. But after her son…s marriage, she became burden of all. There was no one in the huge two storied house where Suhasini could have a little space. She herself came here after seeing the address of this old age home in the newspaper. She paid all her expenses from her family pension. Why is she remembering the thing again and again today? Is it because her sons have not come for a long time? Chest pain has also been increased. Doctor will come tomorrow for routine checkup. Last month the doctor gave a warning that there is a blockage in her heart. All through her life, she had to go through various obstacles, she did not even realize when an obstacle was created in her body. Gradually the day light has become faded. Surrounded by the chirping of birds, it is now the time to go home. Again she starts thinking about past incidents. Once in her life, she felt devastating when she got the news that her younger daughter Ruma committed suicide by putting a rope around her neck as she was unable to bear the torture of her inlaws. She loved her daughter Ruma very much. Suhasini could not bear her tragic end. Her chest pain has been started since then. Suddenly her roommate appeared. “ Suhasini, get up, what are you doing here? Let…s go into the room.” She went inside the room with gloomy eyes and pensive mood. Her roommate again asked: “ What happened? I understand, you are upset because your son has not come.” Suhasini nodded her head and agreed to her words. Her chest pain is gradually increasing. Suddenly, Suhasini said to her, “ Didi,if I fall asleep, don…t call me today. “ Soon the surrounding is covered with darkness. Silence engulfed the entire environment. A few hours later, there was a sudden noise : “ Inform her sons, she…s gone” – they said . The sound of mourning floated in the air from all around.

In 1887 the course of the Chicago River was changed. Formerly it originates in the Great Lakes region and drains into Lake Michigan. But as pollution levels rise in the river, it also contaminates Lake Michigan, which is the main source of fresh water of that region. So civil engineers of this city built a dam to divert the river…s flow from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi Valley.
