Northern Norway – at the top of Norway/Europe – is the land of midnight sun, northern lights, spectacular landscapes and world’s purest foods …

My childhood Northern Norway has seen an adventurous growth in tourism over the recent years, with hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world traveling here to Europe's northernmost mainland to experience the northern lights, the midnight sun, the harsh landscapes and the ever-changing weather.

Despite all these spectacular advantages, Northern Finland has come much further in terms of professional tourist facilities, marketing, booking and adventure tours in the wilderness.

In my opinion, the potential is far, far greater in Norway than in our neighboring countries, and I have therefore over the last couple of years designed what I would call spectacular tourist facilities in several locations in my childhood region (links to examples below).

As a consequence thereof, I have initiated collaboration with and between several individuals and organizations who want a more professional and sustainable development of northern Norwegian tourism over the coming years, and we are now planning a "Northern Lights Resorts" company/fund that will be open to Norwegian and international investors.

 Foreign guest nights to Northern Norway have had a formidable growth of around 500% (!) since Innovation Norway began marketing the Northern Lights in 2006.  International traffic for small-scale tourism has increased by 24% in only one year (2018-2019).

Our plan is to establish funds/ companies that will invest in sustainable North Norwegian tourism and tourist facilities Investing in Northern Norwegian tourism outside the cities represents large and profitable opportunities, but also problems and challenges that must be taken extremely seriously.

SPECTACULAR, BUT CHALLENGING LANDSCAPES The dramatic North Norwegian landscapes – the vast ocean, the fjords, the islands, the mountains, the valleys, the rivers and the lakes – are all tremendous tourist attractions, but all construction and development must be adapted in wise, humble ways.

SPECTACULAR BUT VERY ROUGH WEATHER CONDITIONS The Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun are breathtakingly beautiful, but many days are also filled with raging storms and bad weather.

However, the weather can be made a great advantage and attraction through wise architecture.

SPECTACULAR HISTORY, CULTURE AND TRADITIONS Northern Norwegian culture, history and traditions go back more than 10,000 years, and all tourist development must take into account and seek to promote and clarify this. Architecturally, this should be a leading source of inspiration.

THESE ARE THE CRITERIA WE WILL WORK IN ACCORDANCE WITH: (1) Long-term investments, with solid, regular return/profit.

A professional chain of medium-sized tourism operators in Northern Norway

I believe increased professionalization and supply of more capital will make Northern Norwegian medium-scale tourism flourish like never before. I am also convinced that tourism companies in our magnificent region have much to gain from a wise and dynamic chain collaboration aimed at providing the ever-increasing flow of lucrative but demanding tourists with ever-better, deeper and more professional offers. I also believe that through collaboration one can find and arrange for many cost-saving solutions and beneficial common measures.

How to achieve success for North Norwegian tourism enterprises?

This note is written for people, companies and institutions with interest in wise development of medium-scale tourism in Northern Norway Most of the larger hotels in Northern Norway are owned by chains outside the region, controlled and operated as hotels in most of the world, while the many small and medium-sized tourism operators scattered throughout the northern Norwegian landscape and nature have so far not had similar expertise and financial power to make smart new ventures on good concepts, facilities, marketing, local cuisine etc.

It is, however, my opinion that there is enormous potential in small-scale tourism in Northern Norway, and I emphasize cooperation in this note as a key factor for future success. Likewise, it is extremely important that larger investors take an interest. The ones I primarily address are the following: 

• Investors with a genuine interest in and belief in small-scale tourism in Northern Norway.

• Financial institutions that can facilitate new regional investments in proper way.

• Municipalities that want to plan wise tourism facilities within their own district.

• Property owners with an interest in developing tourist facilities on their own grounds.

• Public institutions within consulting, promotion, financing, etc.

• Operators with solid experience and success in operation and development of facilities.

• Actors skilled in marketing, sales, booking etc.

• Companies with success in the adventure segment; fishing, trips at sea and inland.

• Transport and logistics companies - boat, car, bus, plane, helicopter etc.

• People/companies with documented success in local food, raw material purchases etc.

• Experienced grocers.

• People and institutions with deep knowledge within the environment, sustainability, nature, landscape, etc.

How to attract tourists who "fit" for and in Northern Norway?

- The tourism industry in Northern Norway is experiencing adventurous growth these days, and public authorities have long since designated tourism as a main focus area in the north. In the following I will mention measures and areas where I believe that small and medium-sized tourism operators across the region can benefit from professional collaboration and coordination. I have my professional background in architecture, concept development and media, which the note shows. My first question, however, is: - What kind of tourists we want in the north? As one will see later in this note, senior expert Per Holte at Innovation Norway's head office in Oslo believes that the region should focus more on so-called "Free Independent Travelers," and I think he is right.

Although their  involved in creating a new and better way of life focus is not on material wealth, they don’t have financial problems.  concerned with big business and the means they use to generate profits, including “The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People Are Changing the World” from year 2000 is a nonfiction social sciences book by sociologist Paul H. Ray and psychologist Sherry Ruth Anderson. The authors introduced the term "Cultural Creatives" to describe a large segment in Western society who since about 1985 have developed beyond the standard paradigm of modernists or progressives versus traditionalists or conservatives. Ray and Anderson claim to have found 50 million adult Americans and 80–90 million "CCs”in Europe as of 2000.Ray and Anderson divide "Cultural Creatives" into two subdivisions: 1. Core "Cultural Creatives" Just under half of the CC population comprises the more educated, leading-edge thinkers. This includes many writers, artists, musicians, psychotherapists, alternative health care providers and other professionals. They combine a serious focus on their spirituality with a strong passion for social activism.

2. Green "Cultural Creatives" The more secular and extroverted wing of the "CCs". They tend to follow the opinions of the core group and have more conventional religious outlooks. Their world views less thought-out than the core group and less intensely held.

In business The concept of "innerpreneurs" to denote persons who create a business that focuses mainly on their own inner goals and development was first introduced by Rebecca Maddox in her 1996 book Inc. Your Dreams. The "innerpreneurs" concept is also central to Ron Rentel's 2008 book Karma Queens, Geek Gods and Innerpreneurs, in which he identified the "Cultural Creative" subculture in entrepreneurship:

Will a smart chain of North Norwegian tourism actors be a good idea?

• The new tourism wave is gradually spreading even further in the districts, where a number of small and medium-sized players are now establishing or expanding existing businesses, often a little randomly.

Deep Travel is an effort to dig deeper, go farther, and learn more. It's a mindset that derives from cultural curiosity and drives travelers to connect with locals and immerse in cultures. It can help build cultural bridges that foster tolerance and understanding.

21 possible areas of cooperation for a North Norwegian chain of professional mediumsized tourism enterprises

The Vegvisir, also known as the runic compass or the Viking compass made of eight Viking rune, is a symbol of protection and guidance believed to be used as a compass by Vikings. The word vegvisir means "wayfinder."

01. Networking - development and collaboration on a general and organizational basis My opinion is that teamwork and collaboration between professional tourism operators in the north can make Northern Lights tourism a year-round tourism where annual earnings can also be considerably higher than today.

Northern Norwegian Northern Lights sails in exceptionally strong winds. It establishes the Northern Norwegian tourist industry and Innovation Norway, which also notes that Northern Lights tourists are the country's most lucrative guests. Foreign guest nights to Northern Norway have had a fair growth of 378 per cent since Innovation Norway and partners began marketing the Northern Lights in 2006. The number of guest nights has gone from 48 550 in 2006 to 231 900 for the winter season 2016.

In our Scandinavian neighboring countries, tourist facilities are now esteablishe at a very high pace. Staying in a Finnish glass igloo costs about NOK 5,000 per night! What separates Norway from our Scandinavian neighbors, is that we have so much more pronounced weather, storms and nature experiences to offer than just northern lights and midnight sun, and the undersigned 'perception is that precisely this should be given at least as much weight when the future tourist facilities are planned.

02. Common packages - round trips with different types of experiences + accommodation Many who come to our region will want to experience as much as possible and preferably completely different things during their stay.

Perhaps it is the Northern Lights that have made them come here north, but then it is up to us to show them that Northern Norway is so much more than just the Northern Lights.

We must make them feel that this is a place to come to recharge the batteries, to feel the energy of nature, and we must give them wilderness experiences that really make them feel excitement and deep joy.

We must also offer them time and places for calm and contemplation.

"Package tours" where you travel from place to place, from south to north, from sea to inland and mountain, and experiencing completely different things could be a good answer, as well as the visitors in this way probably going to stay longer in the region.

Providing professional package travel will be able to serve all member companies in a very good way!

An arrangement like this will also link stronger hosts between guests and guests. The chance that the guests want to return will increase, and the pleasure of having visited Northern Norway will probably sit for the rest of their lives ...

Good, analytical media coverage is crucial to attracting new, high-quality tourists to Northern Norway.

Not least, it is important to achieve coverage in large international media.

I myself have a 45-year-old media career alongside my profession as an architect and city developer, and know from experience how immensely important media can be to achieve and develop success.

A well-organized team of tourism companies with experienced media professionals in their midst will stand much stronger than individual companies in terms of possible coverage.

05. Cooperation in sales and promotion

New-rich Chinese pay well to see Norway

There are already good, professional players who actively coordinate and manage sales and marketing / sales of Northern Norwegian tourism products in international markets.

Will it have any additional significance if a selection of tourism companies in Northern Norway goes into a top professional collaboration also in this regard? I think so!

As a group, one will stand even stronger in bringing out a tailor-made message to the most attractive target groups around the world.

Collaboration on marketing - brochures, internet sites, social media Maybe my planned "lavvo brochure" to the left is an OK example of creativity and marketing material that is different and interesting? This is a flat-packed fold-out lavvo, about 30 cm high, with a Northern Lights motif on the outside and the midnight sun inside. Text in different languages will appear on the pictures. The reader must fold out and set the lavvo up, and can also choose whether the summer or winter motif should be turned in/out. But there are also many other creative solutions one can develop in a community. For brochures, internet sites, Google, Facebook etc. And the price will be much lower if you work together ...

07. The trip to the north should start the moment you land – picked up in vans or coaches with panoramic glass roofs Our guests want to be picked up at the airport and they want the adventure holiday to start immediately. Driving in a typical oldfashioned airbus or the like is not that attractive. My idea, therefore, is that this collaboration group should initiate discussions with bus and transport companies to go to the acquisition of buses with glass-panorama roofs. Top guides are also a must. The trip from the airport to the destinations will then be a completely different, exotic experience.

Why glass architecture is so perfect for Northern Norway The point is to get as close as possible to landscape, northern lights, midnight sun, starry skies, weather and harsh storms

The weather here north is powerful and rapidly changing. Strong storms, snowflakes, rain, hail, midnight sun and northern lights; terrible storms, pitch darkness, light, shadows, deepest silence ... Everything comes so very close here in Northern Norway. These weather conditions and phenomena are what the spectacular Northern Lights Architecture will offer the guests, so very close. When standing inside a glass building you can look up and get close to the northern lights and the starry sky. Inside the building you can walk along the glass exterior walls; vertical or oblique glass walls that will give you the feeling that you have become a part of the weather right outside. There will also be outdoor lights/spotlights that you can regulate from inside to get the most out of the weather. Imagine driving in a blizzard and the headlights on the car light up the falling snow.

The bad weather is an equally exotic attraction as the northern lights and the midnight sun Tourists do not come to Northern Norway to swim and soak up the sun. It is the dramatic nature and the strong experiences they seek. Here we have all possible conditions for success in such a tourist context. For foreign tourists, it does not seem that the powerful North Norwegian summer or winter is a negative concept. They come regardless of the weather. Because while people in the north often feel annoyed about terrible driving conditions and bad weather, the tourists think this is a great experience. Instead of escaping from the bad weather, they are happy to experience the extreme in addition to the northern lights and the midnight sun.

21. Cooperation on architecture - buildings, environment, landscapes, interiors Good architecture that lets the Northern Lights close to the guests; adapted to landscape and surroundings, and tells something about the history and traditions of the locations.

For the past two years, I have designed spectacular buildings and tourist facilities plus extensions in various forms - tailored to our beautiful, wild North Norwegian nature, the northern lights, the midnight sun, good and bad weather. Glass is a major theme.

Today's Northern Norway has no clear architectural identity despite the fact that architecture "sells" like nothing else …

There are, unfortunately, only exceptionally good examples of genuine Northern Norwegian architecture.

Apart from nature itself, there is nothing that has more selling power than architecture. For example, what would Tromsø have been without the Arctic Cathedral, Bergen without Bryggen, Paris without the Eiffel Tower, Rome without the Coliseum, etc.?

Northern Norwegian architecture symbolism has so far largely been based on the history of the fisheries (fishermen's cabins) and the history of the Sami people (lavvos), and little has been done to find a new northern Norwegian architectural identity that clearly highlights what the region has to offer, inspired by nature, experiences, culture, research, etc.

I think glass architecture can become a strong symbolism for Northern Norway. Each glass building will be like a separate observatory where only a thin glass membrane separates the guest from everything this “wild region” has to offer of weather, storms, rain, snow, northern lights and midnight sun - while the glass shapes will illustrate and emphasize each region’s history and landscapes.

The glass lets the guest so very close to the weather and nature as possible, while the buildings themselves will have a kind of intellectual, research-inspired image.

Both parts are strong "selling" symbols of what present-day Northern Norway represents.

And while fishermen's cabins and lavvos tell something about our history, the glass formation will tell and open up to phenomena that are happening right now in the powerful northern Norwegian nature.

And why not now take a long step forward to make Northern Norway the world's undisputed northern lights region? Northern Lights tourism is, after all, very lucrative and exclusive …
