BY SHANELLE REDDYFrom selling ice-lollies outside his home at 11 to owning the entertainment empire, Café La Plage in his 40’s, David Manal has made his mark in the world.
Born Ihsan Mohammed Manal Abdulatife Abdallah in the city of Jeddah, located in hot and sandy Saudi Arabia, he later decided to go by the name David Manal. David had anything but a comfortable childhood. Being one of nine children in a low-income household meant that he had to make his own way in life. Life in the streets of Jeddah was not kind, Manal overcame bullying, poverty, a strained relationship with his dad and many other adversities.
In the hot summer month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide, David used his circumstances to his advantage and started his very first business. He began an ice-lolly stand outside his flat, selling lollies to passersby. Seeing a greater opportunity, he expanded his business, adding fried chips to his offering the next year. Manal began a trend that saw many others in the area jump on the bandwagon- he stood his ground and persevered through challenges to earn extra income which he saved.
At 15, his father decided to move part of the family to Jordan. David had to learn to adjust to a new life, but despite keeping his head down, he found himself dealing with bullies once again. This new lifestyle made him a stronger person, not just mentally, but physically as well. Manal and his brothers, along with friends became somewhat a “gang”- ditching school, gatecrashing funerals and weddings, and being an overall disappointment to their school- teacher father.
At this point in his life, David already knew the importance of saving money. The one thing he knew he had no interest in was school and an education. That did not stop him. David possessed the drive and ambition to achieve his hearts desires later in his life.
Fast forward a few years, David found himself working as a cleaner in the kitchen of the Radisson SASS in Jordan. At 18, he knew he was rising from the clutches of poverty and earning his way in life. David made his way to the City of Gold, Johannesburg, in South Africa.
Being determined to work his way up and own his own restaurant, David managed many restaurants before the opportunity to franchise his own restaurant presented itself. David fought tooth and nail to secure his first real break. He opened his very first restaurant in Umhlanga, Plaka.
With everything going according to David’s plan, at 31, things took a turn for the worst. After his 27th MMA fight, he lost his eyesight, and found out that his wife at the time was pregnant. Despite Plaka booming, and him
opening Al Basha, a shwarma take-away in Umhlanga, things were about to change.
Following many doctors’ appointments and surgery, David’s vision returned after 3 operations just before the birth of his baby girl, Eva. It was most definitely the definition of “Miracle”.
Following a fallout with his business partner, David left Plaka behind and started building his new venture, Barrio, into a premium restaurant. Things were going well for David in most aspects of his life, except his personal life. His marriage was falling apart. This led to his divorce from his ex-wife, and subsequently a new relationship. David’s second daughter, Arabella was born.
In 2015, David walked away from Barrio and took a giant leap of faith. The idea was a premium restaurant with a French bakery and boutique butchery. He wanted to create a space for the crème de la crème of society, the socialites and elites. He settled on the name Café La Plage- “Café on the Beach” in French.
Here, the dream was born!
Being the go-getter and trend setter that he is, in 2019 David saw an opportunity in a growing a new brand, “Zuma”. He knew the potential the brand had and trademarked the name in South Africa. The added attention the name got was a bonus for business.
David Manal. Self-made millionaire, author, father, and the ultimate Kitchen Gangster! Don’t take my word for it, grab your copy of The Kitchen Gangster.

The first step to improving your sleep quality is to be consistent with your sleep habits. This means going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even on weekends. It can be difficult to stick to a regular sleep schedule, but it’s important to make it a priority.
Most people know that a dark and quiet room is ideal for sleeping, but there are other factors to consider when creating a conducive sleeping environment. The temperature of your bedroom should be cool – not too hot or too cold. You might also want to consider investing in some earplugs or an eye mask to block out any external noise or light. Creating a comfortable and relaxing space to sleep in will help you get a better night’s rest.
If you want to improve your sleep quality, one of the first things you should do is remove all electronic devices from your bedroom. This includes your TV, laptop, tablet, smartphone, and any other device that emits blue light. Blue light can disrupt your circadian rhythm and make it harder to fall asleep. If you must keep your phone in your bedroom for an alarm clock, be sure to put it on silent mode and keep it away from your bed.
It’s no secret that what you eat and drink can affect your sleep. Caffeine, large meals, and alcohol are all known to disrupt sleep. Caffeine is a stimulant that can keep you awake and make it difficult to fall asleep. If you’re trying to improve your sleep quality, it’s best to avoid caffeine in the evening. Large meals can also be disruptive to sleep. Eating a big meal right before bed can lead to indigestion and make it difficult to fall asleep. If you’re looking to improve your sleep quality, it’s best to avoid large meals in the evening. Alcohol may help you fall asleep initially, but it leads to poorer sleep overall. Alcohol increases the frequency of awakenings during the night and decreases the amount of time spent in deep sleep. If you’re trying to improve your sleep quality, it’s best to avoid alcohol before bedtime.
It’s no secret that exercise is good for you. But did you know that it can also help you sleep better? That’s right, regular exercise can improve your sleep quality and help you fall asleep faster. So how does exercise help you sleep better? Well, first of all, it reduces stress and anxiety levels. Exercise also helps to regulate your body temperature, which can make it easier to fall asleep. And finally, exercise tires your body out so you’re more li kely to feel sleepy at night.
So if you’re looking for ways to improve your sleep quality, make sure to get some exercise every day. It doesn’t have to be anything too strenuous – a simple walk around the block will do the trick. Just make sure to do it at least 30 minutes before bedtime so you don’t end up feeling too energized before trying to sleep.
We all know how important sleep is for our overall health and well-being, but what many of us don’t realize is that the quality of our sleep is just as important as the quantity. We explore 5 ways you can improve your sleep quality so you can wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. From setting a bedtime routine to cutting out caffeine before bed, these tips will help you get the most out of your slumber.

Musgrave Copper is crafted to be the Bourbon of Brandy.
A new genre that remixes the brandy category to play where cognac has feared to tread. Copper is luxurious, disruptive, infused and made to mix. It’s a flavourinfused brandy with subtle flavours and a distinctly African palate.
Musgrave Black Honey Copper is deep caramel in colour and boasts complex savoury flavours. We use a winter African Honey which allows a very subtle sweetness to shine. The finish lingers long and aromas are distinctly bold.
Renting a car is likely one of the most complicated elements of either form of travel – amidst availability challenges of vehicles as agents struggle to scale up to pre-pandemic levels, unnecessary add-on fees, and disproportionate credit card holding charges that can take weeks to reverse. Peer-to-peer car-sharing is a convenient alternative to traditional car rental - in terms of getting exactly the vehicle you want, for as long as you need it and without the additional

Musgrave Original Gin was born out of the African explorations of the Musgrave Family at the turn of the 19th Century.
The Musgrave Gin has expressive top notes of Cardamom, African Ginger, and Grains of Paradise, whilst the citrus and other spices marry together a tale of flavour spanning a continent.
Musgrave Pink Gin is bedazzled with botanical finery. Distilled with Musgrave’s signature 11 botanicals, Rose hips are added during the distillery process, accentuating the distinct top notes of Cardamom, African Ginger and Grains of Paradise sourced from exotic locations across the African continent. These heights are then tamed slightly with a dash of perfume and a splash of romance. The gin is further infused with Rosewater adding a slight exotic perfume and depth of flavour.
The expressive Cardamom and obligatory Juniper contributions are softened so as not to mask the gentle perfume of the roses.
Musgrave Black Honey Copper is deep caramel in colour and boasts complex savoury flavours.
It forms a complex base where the wood is balanced and well-integrated which serves as a carrier for the sweet prune, honey, liquorice, light molasses, and savoury notes to develop. It has a very soft/velvety savoury finish and melts in your mouth. The unique honey character is one of a kind.
A new way to engage the senses, our Musgrave Vanilla Copper is made to mix.
An easy drinking brandy flavoured with fragrant vanilla, enjoy neat or garnished as a perfect serve. The blend was infused with natural vanilla to yield a product with creamy vanilla and tangerine notes on the nose. It has a very delicate palate (velvety soft) and the promise of creamy vanilla carries through from the nose to the pallet where it lingers with soft subtle hints of figs and dried fruit.
