t’s that time of year again. The 23rd annual UFO Festival is attracting tourists and researchers who want to find out if there is any new evidence about the alleged UFO crash in July 1947 near Corona. Yes, it happened on a ranch near the small town of Corona, so why does everybody call it the Roswell crash? Because the nearest military base, the Roswell Army Air Force Base — later known as Walker Air Force Base — was located here and the military were the ones to collect the debris and supposedly also aliens. Today, no other city has the international reputation being connected to the UFO phenomena, not only with military witnesses and citizens’ documen-

tation, but with a military press release that was published in the Roswell Daily Record in July 1947. Every time a new Congress member for New Mexico or a new U.S. President is elected, the hopes of scientists for a truthful explanation rise. So far, explanations have been released that say that the debris came from a weather balloon, high-altitude testing with test dummies or even humans. The generation — military and civilians — that stood to witness the events is gone, but hope remains that there is physical proof of the event somewhere unbeknown to the descendants of the original witnesses. It is hard to believe that the secrets of Roswell very well could have been buried beneath the desert and forgotten. Thanks to nuclear scientist Stanton Friedman and later Donald Schmitt, the story about the alleged UFO crash was brought back in the early ‘80s. Due to Friedman’s research, lectures, documentations and books, witnesses and their children stepped forward with their stories. For the first time this year, the original site of the alleged UFO crash is going to be open for tours. The International UFO Museum was founded to collect any documentations and objects retrieved about the crash — those that the military hadn’t supposedly carried off. Renowned scientists, researchers and authors are having their lectures

and booths at the museum throughout the festival. One of the biggest announcements for the public is that the Bogles family is opening their privately owned ranch. Tours will bring visitors to the exact location on the ranch where the alleged UFO went down. Only government employees, scientists and TV directors were permitted before. Roswell is known as the cradle of space exploration. After all, Robert H. Goddard had moved here in the ‘30s to experiment on rockets. Without those rockets, the flight to the moon would have been impossible. The Roswell Museum and Art Center has meticulously recreated

his workshop with original tools, rockets and film material. Out of the science-based event, a festival came to be that includes fun and entertainment for the entire family. A curious collection of retrobots at Roswell’s newest museum — the Miniatures and Curious Collections Museum, 320 N. Richardson Ave. — beginning June 29, awaits the public. What are these retrobots? They are vintage toy robots, rockets, saucers, astronauts, spacemobiles and moviebots. In an earlier phone interview, Friedman agreed that having a festival around the lectures was a good idea. “I’ve been so pleased at the response of Roswell because you meet people from all over the world,” he said. “It

Premiere of ‘Astro’

The science-fiction feature movie thriller ‘Astro’ to be shown at Roswell Sci-Fi Film Fest By Christina Stock Vision Editor n December 2016, a science-fiction thriller and was made in Roswell. Two years in the making, “Astro” will have its premiere on the widescreen during the Roswell Galacticon & Sci-Fi Film Fest. The movie is about a billionaire named Alexander Biggs (Marshal Hilton) who returns after exploring the universe and finding a new planet with life on it. A retired military man and widower (Gary Daniels) is invited with his daughter Laura (Courtney Akbar) to work for Biggs. The billionaire has ulterior motives and is hiding something. Director Asif Akbar is going to be attending the premiere. Asked why he chose Roswell as the location, Akbar said, “I have always been fascinated with the ideas of UFOs, extraterrestrials and space exploration. Roswell was a town I was familiar with and was very much interested in visiting at some point as it was a big part of my research on the UFO topic over the years.” When Akbar’s friend Gregory Crosby and Spice Williams-Crosby sent in a film to compete in 2016’s

UFO Incident

A city with more than one secret The 71st anniversary of the alleged UFO crash attracts serious scientists and researchers. By Christina Stock Vision Editor magine going back in time to Roswell of 1947. Military members of the Roswell Army Air Field (later known as Walker Air Force Base) were war-proven veterans who survived World War II. Civilians and military did not doubt their leaders and elected officials at that time. The only fear that swept the ranks of the higher uppers was the growing unease toward the former ally, the Soviet Union. The isolated city of Roswell and its citizens were used to keeping secrets, after all, the city is surrounded by the high desert, a deadly arid area and the reason why Robert H. Goddard was sent to work on his rockets, where German prisoners of war were kept with no chance for escape and where the Wernher von Braun team worked on the atomic bomb before being moved to Alamogordo for final testing and flown out of Roswell Army Air Field towards the Empire of Japan in World War II. The Roswell Army Air Field was home to the Strategic Air Command’s strongest fighting force. And, as all military bases often do, the partnership of

I

the base with the nearby city grew into personal friendships and even marriages. Savvy business people, farmers and ranchers catered to the military. When a rancher reported a crash near Corona, the base in Roswell — Army Air Force personnel from the RAAF’s 509th Bomb Group were credited with the recovery — the military, police and firefighters were the nearest first responders. The mystery and conspiracy theory of the Roswell Incident began. People supposedly vanished, were threatened with bodily harm and the story about a UFO crash that had been reported by the military and published in the Roswell Daily Record newspaper was corrected and instead a weather balloon crash story released appeasing the public. It was so successful that Roswell’s alleged crash was forgotten, besides by the ones who said they experienced it. Forgotten that is until a nuclear scientist and UFO researcher talked to a radio host who sent him to the right person, Jesse Marcel. Stanton Friedman’s hunt for the truth started. Friedman’s research, public speeches and published books in his quest for the truth involved authors, scientists, those who think they witnessed an abduction or witnessed unusual sightings. “Roswell has meant a great deal to me and I have greatly enjoyed my visits,” Friedman said in an earlier phone interview. “Hey, I’m 83 years old, it’s about time (to retire). I am planning on being in

Roswell, of course, in July as it is the big end. I’ve got a couple of more things booked after that.” Asked about his beginning as a UFO researcher, Friedman said, “It’s kind of strange. Everybody thinks I must have had a hard time when I was lecturing during those early years, because after all, most people don’t believe in flying saucers. “Well, that’s not the case. I wrote my first book in 1958 about the project ‘Blue Book’ and I gave my first lecture in 1967. I didn’t set out to be a lectursee Friedman on page 9

n the May edition of the Vision Magazine, readers and those who follow the magazine on its Facebook page were asked to vote for their favorite place to eat in town. Deadline for voting was June 16 and the winner is featured below. Out of all voters one lucky winner will be drawn on July 2 to receive a gift certificate to the winning eatery or restaurant. With a lead of 153 votes, the winner is Peppers Grill & Bar, 500 N. Main St. The restaurant has been providing consistently good New Mexico cuisine and service for almost 30 years. As a family-owned business, anybody visiting the restaurant will meet either its president, Neil Roe or his brother Adam Roe, who graduated with a degree in hotel-restaurant management at the University of Nevada, Las

Vegas. Robert Johnston, who was hired as a line cook in 1990, is the vice-president overseeing all kitchen operations on restaurant premises and all off-site catering. During the UFO Festival, Galacticon & Sci-Fi Film Fest, the restaurant is the center for the Steampunk Ball on the patio Saturday evening. For more information, visit peppers-grill.com. Second place went to Classics Frozen Custard, 3009 N. Main St. The fast food diner is known for its custard sundaes, shakes, floats, hot dogs and sandwiches. Third place goes to two eateries who both had the same number of votes: Big D’s Downtown Dive, 505 N. Main St., is known for its freshly made gourmet sandwiches and burgers. La Salsa Mexican Restaurant has been a family-run business since 2007. It is located in the Roswell Mall. This is just a small glimpse into your choices. Roswell has a huge selection of restaurants, some of the best are off the beaten path. Enjoy exploring and welcome to Roswell!

er. Somebody heard me on a radio program and asked, ‘How about lecturing to our group?’ It was in Pittsburg. ‘Sure,’ I said, ‘Why not?’ It was in somebody’s living room. They were reading a book I’d mentioned on air, Frank Edwards’ book ‘Flying Saucers — Serious Business,’ which has a very brief mention of Roswell but didn’t give me any useful information,” Friedman said and laughed. It would take Friedman until 1978 to find a witness of the alleged UFO incident near Roswell. “I was lecturing at the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and they brought me to the big TV station in town to do three interviews,”

he said. “I did the first two but the third reporter was nowhere to be found — this is before they had cellphones. The station manager is giving me coffee. “Out of the blue he says, ‘You know, the guy you ought to talk to is Jesse Marcel.’ Brilliant investigator that I am, I said, ‘Who is he?’” Friedman said and laughed. “I didn’t know about Jesse Marcel. “His next sentence changed my life. He said, ‘He (Marcel) knows about one of those saucers when he was in the military.’” “What? He wasn’t joking. He told me he lived in Houma. I didn’t know where that was — I found out later. “The reporter came and we did the interview. Things went really great that evening on campus. Big crowd,

good questions. The next morning I was at the airport early — I don’t remember where I was going. I decided, let’s find this Jesse Marcel. So I called information. People used to do that before computers. It was very handy. Not only could they give you the number but often they were in the area code that you called for information. So you could say, ‘Is this a nice part of town?’ I liked talking to operators. “Anyway, I got a number for Jesse,” Friedman said. “I called him, explained to him that I had a (security) clearance for 14 years. I told him I talked to the guy at the station and he remembered him. It turns out they were ham radio buddies. Also, it turned out, Jesse hadn’t see

Step into the Universe The Robert H. Goddard Planetarium fascinates with star and laser shows By Christina Stock Vision Editor

E

very time new visitors to Roswell find out about the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium, 110 W. 11th St., they are amazed. There are very few planetariums in small towns, especially planetariums that are equipped with technology that can easily compete with those of big cities with large budgets. While Roswell became popular with the alleged

run, 10K walk, 5K run and a 5K walk. Starting a day before the UFO Festival, on July 5, is the Galacticon & Sci-Fi Film Fest (Galaxy 8 Movies) at the Roswell Mall. Roswell has a big Steampunk fanbase, which is part of the festival with hands-on panels, cosplayers and Steampunk belly dancers. New this year is a live-action role playing game. Free gaming and of course the Sci-Fi Film Fest offer a big selection to choose from. This year’s stars of the event are award-winning cosplayer and costume designer Jessi Arntz, The New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author S.E. Smith and local author E.J. Wilson, who wrote the

guide to the Star Trek universe. One of the biggest highlights is the movie “Astro,” which will be shown at Galaxy 8 Movies at the Roswell Mall. The feature film premiered in Cannes, France, this year and was filmed in Roswell with international and local actors, technicians, and the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell award-winning film class. The Hollywood director Asif Akbar is going to attend. In the Roswell Daily Record press room, Guy Malone and Joe Jordan are having a presentation about a different Christian faith-based theory that explains abductions and the UFO phenomena. The documentary “Alien Intrusion: Unmasking a Deception” by Gary

UFO crash of 1947, the town has a deeper connection to the history of the United States of America, science and the race to send the first man to the moon. Roswell is the town where it all began — the only town that can call itself “Cradle of Space Exploration.” In the 1930s, the famed record-breaking aviator Charles Lindbergh and financier Harry Guggenheim were looking to find a location for the scientist Robert H. Goddard’s rocket experiments, which led them to Roswell. Goddard remained for 12 years working on the secret experiment and record-breaking rocket launches. Without those experiments, the United States would not have later won the race to the moon and begun the human race’s early space exploration. Thanks to Goddard’s widow, Esther Christine Goddard, who was his assistant and who had devoted her life to record her husband’s research and experiments, many of his tools and rockets were saved, not to mention films, photos and notes of the experiments. The Roswell Museum and Art Center, which is adjacent to the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium, recreated a detailed workshop of the scientist thanks to Esther Christine Goddard. Stepping into the cool air-conditioned planetarium, visitors will step into the universe and into the dreams of visionary Goddard. The Robert H. Goddard Planetarium and its programs are in the hands of Jeremy Howe, who will present to visitors a carefully selected program Bates will be shown at Galaxy 8 Movie Theater. Malone and Jordan were interviewed for the documentary. On Saturday, the Xcel Energy UFO Light Parade begins at 9 p.m. The parade runs south on Main Street, starting at Ninth Street and ending at Third Street. There is no entry fee and all aliens and pets from the costume contest are encouraged to ride on the float provided for them. The theme this year is “eUFOric Space Adventure.” The Steampunk Ball with award-winning band Marquis of Vaudeville kicks off at Peppers Grill and Bar on the patio. More art can be seen in the windows of the shops on Main Street. They are competing for having the best window decora-

tion, either patriotic art or alien inspired. A little off the beaten path is the new Bone Springs Art Space, which will offer several scientific art-related events, including sun painting. While there, take a look around. The gallery that hosts the art event is having its first exhibit by local artist Jeremy Howe. Howe paints with fireworks and other material. A curious collection of retrobots at Roswell’s newest museum, the Miniatures and Curious Collections Museum, 320 N. Richardson Ave., awaits the public with a selection of antique robots from around the world. A visit to the Historical Society For New Mexico Museum, 200 N. Lea Ave., shows how people lived here in the early

from star to laser shows, synchronized to modern themes and music — a fitting display of the new technology for the 21st century that Howe brought to Roswell. The shows will be presented from July 6 to 8. For times, see the program schedule of events in the center of the magazine. There are several different shows to see, starting with the “Phantom of the Universe” show. From the journey of protons racing through the world’s largest particle collider in Europe to up-close views of the Big Bang and emergent cosmos, “Phantom of the Universe” is a new full-dome planetarium show designed to immerse audiences in the search for dark matter. The show “Universe” is a historical look at how humanity has envisioned the universe through the ages. The audience gets to visit some of the ancient sites where our ancestors erected great structures with special astronomical significance. Finally, a look at the universe through the eyes of today’s science and space explorers to build up a spectacular overview of the heavens. Other shows entice with titles such as “Two Small Pieces of Glass: The Amazing Telescope;” “Laser Rush 2112;” “Laser Zeppelin” and “Laser Pink Floyd — Dark Side of the Moon,” to name a few. days. Another museum is worthy of a visit, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, 409 E. College Blvd. Roswell has three theaters and the directors and actors present a variety of shows for the public during the UFO Festival. Remember the radio program by Orson Welles that set the United States in panic about an alien invasion? Way Way Off-Broadway Theatre Company presents a reading of the original radio show, “War Of The Worlds,” at RMAC. WWOB is staging a ‘40s UFO/USO Show at the Pearson Auditorium on the New Mexico Military Institute grounds. Music

Even aliens love music The UFO festival offers out-of-this-world music By Christina Stock Vision Editor his year, a variety of local, national and outof-space musicians are going to perform at the Roswell UFO Festival. One of the up-and-coming artists is singer and songwriter Eryn Brent who was born and raised in Montana, but lives in Albuquerque today. “I’ve lived in New Mexico for almost eight years now, and I’ve been to Roswell a handful of times in the past three years for shows,” Brent said. Asked how she would describe her music, she said, “Rockicana/Country Folk. I play like I won’t play tomorrow.” The aliens are coming — Brothers of Alien Rock promise music that is out-of-this world. The alien brothers that form the band are Inferno Being, Lyb Onarf, Eleet Kraft and Knowbot, who is in hibernation at the moment. Fully infused in their characters who are on the hunt for their brother, their style is pure rock ’n’ roll. In a phone interview, Inferno Being talks about their journey and visit to Roswell. “We heard about Roswell for seven decades at this point because the main crux of what happened in Roswell in 1947 in July, back in that summer, was that a ship crashed and there was a recovery,” Inferno Being said. “What some may not know, that there were two other crashes that happened and we were involved in one of them, except we escaped unnoticed. That’s when we heard about Roswell. It’s kind of a weird start. There is a whole backstory behind it, but we probably will save it for when we show up in town to say what actually happened to lead up to the events. Imagine ’47. “Roswell had been on our radar ever since, kind of connecting that way,” Inferno Being said. “A lot happened since then. We are just so happy to come home. Asked about their style of rock, Inferno Being said, “It is a culmination about so much, the kind of music in the ‘40s, and we went through decades after decades and have gotten in contact behind the scenes — what people call the big rock stars like Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Elvis, Nirvana, all these great bands,” Inferno Being said. “We got in touch with them and we learned their style, wrote songs together. A lot of the big songs played on the radio in those eras were collaborations of what we did. We were shaping the face of Rock ‘n’ Roll for 70 years. “Where we are right now, the description would be like a mix fu-fighters of rock. It’s a melodic approach to it, there is a lot of energy. It is a culmination of all these decades and bands and influences, but if you want to pinpoint it down to maybe one or two bands — probably Fu-Fighters would be a good analogy, a good parallel for us. But there is so much that is influenced by us: Van Halen, Zeppelin, Metallica, all sorts of stuff, Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson. All these musicians were amazing artists who

Alien Pet Contest and Alien Human Con-Test

Roswell Galacticon and MainStreet Roswell present the 2018 Roswell Costume & Cosplay ConTest By Christina Stock Vision Editor he annual Roswell Alien Pet Contest and Alien Human Contest is one of the UFO Festival’s favorite and takes place on Saturday with free admissions. The contests bring out the creativity of the participants. This year, for the second time, the Galacticon crew is organizing the contests. Who else, but cosplay and costume experts can judge, among them award-winning cosplayer Jessi Arntz, who has just been selected as one of five contestants for a North American/ Canadian contest. “I won the Fan Expo Master of Cosplay Central Qualifier, Arntz said in a phone interview. “The championship is at the end of August in Toronto.” In the cool morning at 10 a.m., critters small and large, two-legged, four-legged and sixlegged from all over the universe are showing off their alien traits at the Chaves County Courthouse lawn. The Alien Pet Contest is supported by Cielo Grande Vet Center and the Rio

Pecos Kennel Club. Registration of the alien pets can be made no later than 9 a.m. either at the event, or on Friday or Saturday morning at the Galacticon information booth at the Roswell Mall. Those lucky owners who can claim having an alien pet can download the registration form in advance from ufofestivalroswell.com as well. The top three alien pets will be awarded trophies with cash prizes. The Alien humanoid and Cosplay Con-Test takes place at the Pearson Auditorium, which is located at the New Mexico Military Institute on North Main Street. The contest is supported by Alexa Person. This event is especially popular for the media and TV crews worldwide. Registration must be completed by 2 p.m. Forms are available at the Downtown UFO Fest or the Galacticon at the Roswell Mall Friday or Saturday. The form is available for download at ufofestivalroswell. com.

touched people and that’s what really rooted us to Earth and really kept us for so long.” The entourage of the band is traveling to Roswell from Florida on an RV — their space ship is undergoing some repairs. Their trip is called “Road to Roswell,” and they are documenting their adventures along the way. “We’ll be leaving early July and will be checking in with everybody making sure they know what’s going on about all the places along the way. It’s going to be fun,” Inferno Being said. “We are going to meet everybody in town, but it is so important that beforehand everybody knows who we are.” For more information, find them on Facebook or visit brothersofalienrock.com. Country music of the best — Curtis Grimes to perform at the UFO festival To hear Curtis Grimes sing is to take a trip through the heart of country music. A Texas native, Grimes was raised on a steady diet of George Strait and Alan Jackson, and he possesses the everyman charm of both his heroes; along with a refreshingly mature voice that truly stands out. In 2011, Grimes was given a chance to appear on a new reality TV show called “The Voice” airing on NBC. To date, Grimes has six No. 1 songs under his belt and has played hundreds of shows across the U.S. Shelby Lanterman returns to Roswell to perform at the UFO Festival. “New Mexico and more specifically Roswell, has become one of my favorite places to visit, Lanterman said. “Back in 2015, I embarked on my very first tour as a solo artist and stumbled across Stellar Coffee as a venue for touring acoustic artists. I reached out and got in contact with Marie Manning, who is an amazing songwriter from Roswell and has become one of my best friends. I fell in love with the town right away. People were so kind and very receptive to my music. Since then, I started my band Shelby, Texas and my bandmate, Michael Ryan “Texas” McCauley and I have stopped in Roswell and Albuquerque on almost every tour we’ve been on. This will actually be our second time playing the UFO Festival — we played in 2017 and have been planning on coming back since. “I met my bandmate Texas, who had actually grown up listening to country and was already performing and writing in that genre. As soon as we started collaborating, it became very clear that country was my sweet spot.

told anything (about the UFO incident in Roswell), “He told me his story. He was the intelligence officer for the 509th (in Roswell) and he got a call from the sheriff’s office that a rancher came in with some pieces of strange wreckage. There was an agreement between the sheriff’s office and the base — this is the 509th, the most elite military group in the world. I say that because they dropped the first two atom bombs and then two more a couple of years later. Nobody else in the world had atom bombs, but they did. So they were high security, special people. “The sheriff called Jesse and Jesse checked out the wreckage and

the story goes on from there. His boss sent him out with the counterintelligence guy to the wreckage. They followed the rancher out. That’s how I got started. Sometimes you get lucky, that’s all I can say. “I knew nothing about Roswell. Why would I? I grew up in New Jersey, lived in California. I looked up the editor and publisher of the Roswell Daily Record and I called. “I said, ‘I’d like to talk to the editors from 1947.’ ‘Oh, long gone,’ they said. ‘What can we do for you? I have copies of articles here.’ After talking to Jesse, Bill Moore and I went out to find people connected to the crash,” Friedman said. We started looking at newspapers and stuff like that. We read a bunch of

articles. I had a couple of articles that said base public information officer. I didn’t even know that the base had been closed in the mid-’60s when I called.” Friedman said and laughed. “It says the base publication officer, a guy called Walter Haut — his name was spelled four different ways in four different articles — and before I could finish the sentence, the gal on the phone said, ‘Oh, his wife works here.’ Totally unexpected. Walter, turns out, was from Chicago and he had been at the base as public information officer and also World War II bombardier who went on 20 missions overseas. A very special guy. “He and his wife liked Roswell so they settled and raised their family there. I asked people casually what people

thought about him and it was all good. He was a great help to me. “His daughter was for many years the head of the museum, Julie Shuster. Walter just died a few years back. A big guy, he was close to Col. Blanchard. Walter was quite a guy. He was also a darn good bombardier when they ran a second set of tests on Operation Crossroads.” Operation Crossroads was a pair of nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll in 1946. “Walter was chosen to drop the instrument package for the nuclear test. Without the instruments it’s a wasted test. They didn’t have atomic bombs to waste at that time. That is a sign of the respect of which he was held,” Friedman said. “Walter had a base

yearbook. So, in the first year, my colleague and I contacted 16 people connected to the base in 1947. I can’t call them all witnesses. “What usually happened, you talk to a guy and ask, is there anybody else you remember? ‘Gee, that is a long time ago.’ Once you get them in the mood though, five minutes of chitchat, mentioning Col. Blanchard as the base commander, Jesse Marcel and other people, then you get a ‘Hey, have you talked to Joe Jones or Bill Smith?’ They remembered things. At the end of the year, I had over 60 people and a year later, another 30. I was looking for off-hand comments.” It is going to be the 23rd UFO Festival and Friedman has been the lead lecturer almost

every year. “I may do selected things, but enough is enough. I only have spoken in 19 countries, 10 provinces and 30 states. What more is there to do?” Friedman said and laughed. “It (his retirement) will make both my wife and I happy. I gave my first lecture in 1967.” In Roswell, the International UFO Museum and Research Center collected any material and research information to help in the search for truth. Roswell benefitted from the alleged crash, starting in 1996 when the first UFO Festival took place. Since then, hundreds of thousands of visitors came to the festival, visiting the International UFO Museum and listening to thesee

Galacticon

The eighth annual Galacticon & Sci-Fi Film Fest

The Galacticon & Sci-Fi Film Fest shows the creative side of the festival By Christina Stock Vision Editor his year the dates for the eighth annual Galacticon & Sci-Fi Film Fest are July 5 to 7 in conjunction with Roswell’s UFO Festival, which starts a day later with the final day of the festival being July 8. Galacticon is held at the Roswell Mall and features Con staples such as vendor booths, comic book collectibles, artists, cosplay, gaming, workshops and panels. This year, guest of honor is international bestselling USA TODAY and The New York Times author, S.E. Smith, who is attending Galacticon. Smith is known for her books for children, young adults and science-fiction romance, which includes a series that was inspired by her visit in Roswell and Southeast New Mexico. The series is about a very unusual little town named Magic, New Mexico. The series was so well received that Amazon selected it for Kindle World, where other authors join to place their stories in. He will have his newest book with him, “The Mountain Wakes.” Wilson tells the story of two clans of cave dwellers, calling the big mountain their home — until the mountain wakes. Local author, John LeMay, is an authority of the legend and lore surrounding Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War. He will have his books at his booth and is open for questions from the audience. JAFantasyArt is Jessi Arntz, renowed cosplayer, armorer and leatherworker who built her success in the steampunk, con and gaming communities, is attending the Galacticon as special guest and will be judge for the Alien Human Cosplay Contest for the second time. For gamers, there will be workshops at Galacticon, free play and tournaments during the festival. Part of the Galacticon is the established SciFi Film Fest with features and shorts in the Sci-Fi genre from around the world, shown at Allen Theatres — Galaxy 8. The highlight of the film fest is the award ceremony on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the theater featuring the five category winners and best film. This event is open to the public. Film industry notables present panels and instruction with attendees. Next to short and full feature movies, this year there will be a premiere of the movie “Astro,” a science-fiction movie that see

The museum has never really promoted the artifacts on display because of a possible security risk. “I’ve always been interested in things like science-fiction,” Kimbler said. “When I moved out to Roswell, it was probably a good six months before I came to the museum (International UFO Museum). event, but there is no physical evidence. “I said, ‘Oh, I got myself a new hobby. I am going to see if I can actually prove and get some physical evidence.’ That’s what started the whole thing. I had already been out hunting gold nuggets with a metal detector, this is just a natural spinoff of that,” Kimbler said. “And I decided to use my science, my knowledge of science to apply it to looking for the objects and that’s what I do. I had some good results from the research that I’ve done.” The new display highlighting the artifacts in the International UFO Museum shows metal objects and buttons. “I was amazed when

Only five contestants achieved this. The finals will be in August in Toronto, Canada. I found those military buttons and they were identified as being military fatigue buttons from the late ‘40s or early ‘50s,” Kimbler said. “That is so cool. That means they were there on hands and knees looking around and just popped buttons from their uniforms.” Kimbler said that he is looking forward to seeing the new display for the artifacts. “It doesn’t look really spectacular, but the thing about it is that it is spectacular because these are actual artifacts from the Roswell crash site. These are metallic fragments that have been analyzed and some of them are anomalous,” Kimbler said. “In other words, they basically don’t seem to match anything we have here on Earth.

“I don’t know, it’s just a speculation, almost like science-fiction,” Kimbler said. “What I see happening in the future is, we need to have some physical proof. It has to be the touchy-feely part that you hold in your hand,” Kimbler said. Kimbler is one of the speakers at the International UFO Museum during the UFO Festival. Others are Donald R. Burleson, Thomas Carey, Robert Farrel, Tom Kirkbride, Kathleen Marden, Thomas Reed, Ronald Regehr, Alejandro Rojas, Donald Schmitt, Derrel Sims, Yvonne Smith and Travis Walton. him five tries before he was able to bring up the pictures. Disappointment filled him when he saw the grainy and indistinct images. He was too far away. It was hard to tell that the figures he was seeing were not human in the photos — except for in one. One photo showed the male alien carrying the Vision Magazine editor of the Roswell Daily Record up a ramp — although her face was not visible, he could identify her as Christina Stock — and disappearing into thin air. “Finally,” Herb mumbled, his voice quavering and his eyes clouding with tears. “I finally have proof that I’m not crazy.” Now, he had to decide

what he was going to do with the information. He didn’t want to share anything until there was indisputable proof. At first, he considered capturing the dog-shaped creature but changed his mind after seeing what it did to Christina. “One of the smaller aliens,” he murmured, staring at the photo in his shaking hands. “If I can capture one of the smaller aliens ... But, how? I have to figure out how.” Herb jumped when he heard a knock on the top of his car. Looking up, his eyes widened before they rolled back in his head. His cellphone slipped from his suddenly limp fingers to the floorboard of his car. He never heard the driver’s door open or felt his

new exhibit in Montana,” Jennifer said. Alan breathed a sigh of relief when he realized his mom had misunderstood what Mr. Friedman was referring to. Matt started to open his mouth, but thankfully it was only to stuff more spaghetti into it. Alan would have to remember that food was a very effective way to keep Matt quiet. “What brings you to Roswell, Mr. Friedman?” Alan politely asked. Stan smiled. “Retirement,” he admitted with a chuckle, pushing his glasses up on his nose. Alan grinned. “My mom and I listened to your lecture on the crash here. What do you say when people tell you that UFOs don’t exist?” he curiously asked. Stan looked at him. “Are you a non-believer?” he inquired.

“Oh, Alan and I believe in aliens,” Matt said. “We’ve … uh … watched Superman.” “He’s a comic book character,” Alan muttered. “I know that, but he’s still an alien,” Matt stubbornly defended. “Matthew, did you call your parents to make sure it was alright for you to spend the night?” Jennifer asked. “Yeah. My dad wanted to know how long I could stay and my mom yelled at him. They are OK with me staying ‘cause I told them Alan and I were working on a school project,” Matt replied with a grin. Jennifer laughed. “Well, I guess that will get you out of kitchen cleanup tonight then,” she teased. “At least one thing worked out right today,” Alan mumbled. “So, Stan, how did you become a UFOlogist?” Jennifer asked. Alan twirled his spa-

ghetti noodles on his fork as he absently listened to Stan explain how he became interested in Roswell. His mind was on the aliens outside and what they might be doing to Miss Christina. He didn’t think they would hurt her, but what if they did? Maybe he should tell his mom about their new visitors. But … then again, what if he did and the government hurt the aliens who really weren’t going to hurt his mom’s friend. Carbon honestly seemed like she was nice, and he didn’t want her to get hurt. He wanted to bang his head on the table. Looking under his eyelashes at Matt, he rolled his eyes. Only Matt — well, and perhaps Iron — could calmly eat like there wasn’t a UFOlogist sitting at the table while there was an invisible spaceship with aliens outside. He blinked when he heard his name. “What?” he replied

with a blank look. “After you are done with your dinner, why don’t you show Matt where he can sleep?” his mom suggested with an inquisitive look at his distraction. Alan reluctantly nodded his head. “OK,” he said. “Oh, can I borrow a toothbrush? My mom freaks out if I don’t brush my teeth,” Matt said. “I wonder if aliens brush their teeth. I’ll have to ask Iron.” “Iron?” Stan asked, turning to look at Matt. Alan’s eyes widened, and he shot Matt a warning glare. “Iron Man … You know … the Marvel character,” he said, shoveling the last bite of spaghetti into his mouth. “I think I’m done. Come on, Matt.” Alan slid from his chair, picked up his empty plate and chugged the last of his milk. Matt stuffed his garlic bread see

Government tells us more about UFOs than they intend

Looking Up

By Donald Burleson

I

f we wait for government secret-keepers to tell us what they know about UFOs, we will grow old waiting. Fortunately, though, there are much better things we can do than just wait. One of these things is what I like to think of as connecting the dots, even though the official cover-up artists certainly don’t want the dots connected. Let me give an example. When Canadian radio engineer Wilbert Smith spoke with American government science advisor Robert Sarbacher in 1950 about the UFO question, Sarbach-

into his mouth and nodded, following him. Matt fumbled with his plate and glass. “Thanks, Ms. Whitehead. See you around, Mr. Friedman,” Matt mumbled around the food in his mouth. “You make really good Italian, Ms. Whitehead.” “Thank you, Matthew,” Jennifer replied. “Alan, there are spare toothbrushes in the bathroom cabinet.” “Thanks, mom,” Alan answered. “It was nice meeting you, Mr. Friedman.” “It was a pleasure meeting you as well, Alan,” Stan responded. Alan jerked his head at Matt, indicating for the other boy to follow him. He hurried into the kitchen, rinsed his dishes and placed them in the dishwasher. Matt did the same.

er told him that UFOs were the most secret information the government had, “classified two points higher even than the H-bomb.” This remark is interesting in itself, but even more interesting when we connect it with something else occurring at a different time. On March 25, 1948, a l ar ge di sk - sh ape d object crashed near Aztec, New Mexico, and Robert Oppenheimer, best known as father of the atomic bomb, was one of several prominent scientists sent in to examine the craft and the bodies. Five years later, in spite of the

fact that he had proven his loyalty many times over, the Eisenhower administration pulled his security clearance, citing such things as his reluctance to side with Edward Teller in development of the H-bomb. I have long argued that the real reasons had more to do with his involvement in UFO retrieval activities and his alleged arguing for development of the propulsion systems found there, which by all accounts could have made conventional energy technology look medieval. Oppenheimer testified for weeks at Atom-

ic Energy Commission hearings in 1954, trying to have his clearance reinstated, but in the end, the prevailing tribunal refused to do so. Their chairman Gordon Gray — a member of Truman’s and Eisenhower’s UFO inner circle and decidedly a government “company man” — wrote with his colleagues a letter to the AEC leadership, in which they said that Oppenheimer, as someone “having access to the most sensitive areas of restricted data and to the innermost details of national war plans and weapons,” should have been more trustworthy.

The careful reader will note that this wording implies “national war plans and weapons” are one thing and “the most sensitive areas of restricted data” are another. It might be tempting to think this was just clumsy writing, but that’s not the case. Here’s where we connect the dots. Remember, Pentagon science advisor Robert Sarbacher said, as reflected in Wilbert Smith’s interview notes, that UFOs were the most highly classified matter the government had to deal with. This shows that “the most sensitive areas” and “war plans

“So, where’s your bedroom?” Matt asked. “Forget my bedroom,” Alan hissed. “We’ve got to make sure Carbon, Iron and their parents haven’t left the planet with Miss Christina.” “Do I need to get my helmet? I forgot where I put it,” Matt said with a frown. “Just come on before anyone else gets kidnapped,” Alan grunted, grabbing Matt by the arm and pulling him behind him. Alan headed down the stairs to the lower section of the warehouse where they had been earlier. Exiting through the side door, he looked around. It was dark outside now and the streetlights illuminated the area with their amber glow. He looked around before pulling on Matt’s arm again. “Come on,” he said, cutting across the lot. “How are we going to know where … ? Ouch!

Never mind, I found it,” Matt said, rubbing his forehead when he bumped it on the spaceship. “Now what?” “I don’t know,” Alan said, lifting up his hands and running them along the outer hull. “Why don’t you just knock? My mom always opens the door when someone knocks on it,” Matt suggested, reaching up and knocking on the hull like it was a door. Alan shot Matt an exasperated look. “You don’t just knock on a spaceship, Matt,” he dryly retorted, before jumping back when a section of the ship separated and Carbon looked down at them from the opening above the now lowered ramp. “See, it worked. I’m not as dumb as people think I am,” Matt replied with a grin. “Hi, Carbon. Is the lady your dad kidnapped still alive?” “Of course, she and my parents are chatting. Come on in,” Carbon

said, waving her hand. “Hey, Rover One. You’re such a good robot dog,” Matt said, patting Rover One on the head and climbing up the ramp before disappearing inside the ship. Alan shook his head in disbelief. “I honestly didn’t think that would work,” he mused before slowly following Matt into the ship. “Wrong Turn to Roswell” continues on July 26 with Episode 9: Uh-Oh! and weapons” were indeed different things. Government can sometimes tell us more than they realize they’re telling us, with widely diverse documents that are innocent enough when read one at a time but significantly revealing when read together. It’s pretty hard for them to keep this from happening. The effort to conceal truth is, after all, an unnatural mindset, while the desire to discover truth is fundamental to the human spirit.
