NTSB: Track switcher was aligned, locked to side track By Jared Tucker Multimedia Journalist New details have emerged about the train crash near Midway on Tuesday that killed a railroad employee from Texico and injured a second after investigators said they jumped from their locomotive just before it collided with a parked train headon. The main track was aligned and locked into position of the side track, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. According to NTSB spokesman Earl Weener at a news conference Wednes-

Conductor of parked train would have key, investigators say

day, investigators have downloaded and reviewed event recorder data from the moving train. The event recorder, similar to an aircraft “black box,” records 65 parameters of data such as speed, horn operation, pre-trip brake tests and throttle information. “The throttle was dropped to idle approximately 32 seconds prior to impact. The train reached a peak speed of 42 miles per hour at that time,” Weener

said. “The engineer put the train into emergency braking approximately 18 seconds and 827 feet from the impact point.” Weener said the train, which was traveling south, collided with the second train at 31 mph. The allowable maximum speed on that portion of the track is 49 mph, he said. Jesse Coburn III, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator, according to police in pre-

vious statements, and a second, unnamed employee was airlifted to a Lubbock, Texas, hospital. That employee is in stable condition. Weener said the track switcher, which is manually operated, was aligned with the side track and locked with a padlock. When asked if the person parking a train on the side track would have the key, Wenner replied, “That would be the person who has the key, yes.” Weener said a crew jumping from a train before a crash is not uncommon. “The irony is, of course, that the survival space in

the lead locomotive was very much in tact. So had they stayed aboard the locomotive they would have very likely survived the accident,” Wenner said. The train, operated by Southwestern Railroad, had been traveling for 52 minutes and covered a distance of 15 miles from its last stop while en route from Clovis to Carlsbad, Weener said. Southwestern Railroad is among the parties to the investigation, and spokesman Chad Carswell declined to comment on Weener’s statements. See TRAIN, Page A3

Hot air balloons to take over Alien City this weekend Staff Report There’s nothing quite like looking up into a clear blue morning sky and seeing dozens of hot air balloons drifting on a gentle breeze. Even more exciting is actually getting to ride in one. This Saturday and Sunday, Roswell Toyota will present the 28th annual Old Timers Balloon Rally. Around 70 balloons, pilots and crews are coming to Roswell from throughout the Southwest and Midwest. Inflation of the balloons will be at the Cielo Grande Recreation Area, located in the 2000 block of West College on the northwest side of the soccer fields, around 6:30 a.m. both days. And for some lucky kids, several balloons will be inflating and taking off from some local schools around 7 a.m. Friday. Spectators are encouraged to see these beautiful balloons and visit with the pilots, crews and sponsors. And don’t forget to bring a camera. Unless you forget to take the lens cap off, it’s almost impos-

sible to not get good photos. Admission to the morning launches is free. But if you do want to support the cause, commemorative T-shirts and commemorative Old Timers Rally Pins will be on sale. Parking is available throughout the Cielo Grande Recreation Area. Local high schools will be selling breakfast burritos, donuts, coffee and hot chocolate. Volunteers are needed to help with the balloons. If you would like to participate in a balloon crew, call Andrea Regalado at 317-0767. Proceeds from the Old Timers Balloon Rally benefit local charities in the City of Roswell.
