Groups, volunteers honor veterans By Jared Tucker Multimedia Journalist

A local motorcycle group and its parent fraternal group gathered at the Memory Lawn Cemetery Saturday morning to place flags on the graves of departed veterans and to replace “Old Glory,” which is flying proudly in the center of the cemetery. It’s a tradition that was started about 30 years ago by Martha Yates, former Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2575. The annual event was taken over a few years ago by the EagleRiders, the motorcycle club of the Roswell Chapter of the

Fraternal Order of Eagles. “This is something we are very grateful for,” Yates said. Though he’s not a veteran, Yates’ grandson, EagleRiders President Michael Guerin, said he’s proud to help honor the local fallen heroes and take over the tradition his grandmother started decades ago. “A lot of her friends aren’t able to do it anymore, so the last couple of years she’s asked us to step in and do it,” Guerin said. “We’re happy to do it.” Around 300 of the 600 interred at Memory Lawn are veterans, according to

an article published in July 2014 in the Daily Record. When Yates, Guerin and the other 20 volunteers showed up Saturday morning, they discovered someone had been there the day before and lined the sidewalks with American flags. “We don’t know where they came from,” volunteer Patsy Silva said. Silva’s 19-year-old brother served in the U.S. Army, she said, and was killed while serving in the Vietnam War. She places flags at both Memory Lawn and the Gen. Douglas L. Book lovers have a friend in Wiser Bush, Christie rise in

defense of Patriot Act

By Jeff Jackson Record Staff Writer

As a Friend of the Library for 10 years, Cindy Wiser considers books some of her best friends. She’s surrounded by books either at the library, by other people who love books or at Books Again, the bookstore she and other volunteers operate to raise money for Friends of the Library and the Roswell Public Library. “The main things that we do for the library is we give them money for extra things that go

above and beyond what they are budgeted for,” said Wiser, who has been president of the FOTL board for three years. “For example, we give them money to buy extra copies of the new bestsellers because See SPOTLIGHT, Page A3 Today’s Forecast

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Likely Republican presidential contenders Jeb Bush and Chris Christie heartily endorsed the Patriot Act on Friday and mocked those who deride the intelligence overhaul passed after the Sept. 11 attacks as an encroachment on civil liberties. “There is ample evidence that the Patriot Act has
