Mayor discusses splash pads, mental health By Jeff Jackson Record City Editor On Thursday, Mayor Dennis Kintigh came to the Roswell Daily Record for a monthly question-and-answer session covering a wide range of subjects. RDR: What are the primary effects, what would prioritize as the major effects of the Legislature blockage of the capital outlay? DK: That’s an interesting question. Our No. 1 request was $8 million for a portion of the hangar project we want to do out there at the airport. That’s that hangar large enough for a Boeing 747-8. The concept is that the state would

put up $8 million and the city would have bonded, based upon rent payments, from a tenant of $7.5 million so we would have had the money to build it. And the idea is it would bring additional jobs to Roswell. That was always going to be a stretch. We knew that going in, $8 million is a big chunk and we knew that. I’m not ready to give up on it. There was approval in HB 2 for about $37 million in what they call LEDA (Local Economic Development Act) money. Can we get some of that, can we come up with additional revenues to make the difference? I want to explore that. And understand why this is a big issue for me.

This airport here is a huge asset for this community. And many of us have felt for a long time we haven’t fully utilized it, we haven’t maximized its potential for economic activity. We do have companies out there already. We have the aircraft painting, Dean Baldwin, we have maintenance repair and overhaul companies. They’ve been there for a long time but how do we take it to a next level because those hangars we have there are old, they were built in the ‘50s mostly and it’s great for B-29, B-47 but it doesn’t fit for a large jumbo jet. So if we want to be able to do fullblown maintenance here that means we need to

have an infrastructure. The runway is an infrastructure, 13,000 feet. Great. We need a hangar that would go with that. Well we didn’t get what we wanted. We don’t give up on it. We keep looking at other options. As to the other stuff, we also asked, if I remember right, some serious funding dealing with water lines. We’re also proceeding forward with that anyway. We’re looking at using our ability to use revenue from the water payments or water bills to fund bonds to do the serious replacement we need to do. In the next month or so you will see the beginning of a Kintigh

Sunny skies and moderate temperatures prevailed as dozens of children cast their hooks during the 12th annual Youth Fishing Clinic sponsored by the Masonic Lodges of The Pecos Valley Saturday at Lake Van. Most 11-year-old girls — who are in that awkward age group that is too old for toys but too young for boys — will spend their money on clothes, shoes, purses and whatever else it takes to look cool and fit in with the other girls at school. But one young lady from Dexter, Alexia Loya, decided the $250 she saved from birthday presents and doing chores would be better spent on helping local cancer patients than on any glamour items from the mall.
