You better ‘Believe’ it NBC’s new sci-fi drama can’t be missed

ust in case there aren’t enough precocious children solemnly making their way through prime time these days, NBC’s throwing another one into the mix.

The whole “wise beyond their years” thing presents an oftcrossed fine line between cute and cloying, so it’s a good thing the peacock network’s new sci-fi drama, “Believe,” has some experienced hands at its helm to keep it on the right track. Created by the writer/director of “Gravity” (2013), Alfonso Cuarón, and produced by sci-fi juggernaut J.J. Abrams, the series revolves around a 10-year-old girl with supernatural powers and the people who protect her from the “sinister forces” that hunt her.

“Believe” premieres Monday, March 10, on NBC. Developing a television series is a relative departure for Alfonso Cuarón, whose résumé consists predominantly of film credits. He’s best known for his work on “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (2004), “Children of Men” (2006), “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006) and, most

recently, the Oscar-nominated space thriller “Gravity,” which he wrote, directed and produced.

In fact, it was during “Gravity’s” production that the idea for “Believe” was born. “I had a window, waiting for the endless process of visual effects and I wanted to do something,” he told critics, according to Deadline.com, but there wasn’t enough time for him to take on another movie. There was time enough for the show’s pilot episode, however, which Cuarón directed and co-wrote. “Gravity” received 10 Oscar nominations and won Cuarón a Golden Globe for Best Director, so it’s clear that he knows what to deliver when it comes to science fiction.

As does J.J. Abrams, his “Believe” co-captain, whose name is attached to a successful and well-rounded body of work on both the big screen and the small. As movies go, he counts the recent “Star Trek” and “Mission: Impossible” franchises, “Super 8” (2011) and “Cloverfield” (2008) among his repertoire. In television, he is known for writing, producing, creating and directing more than a dozen series on the Big Four networks, many of which contain supernatural or sci-fi elements,

including “Lost,” “Fringe,” “Revolution” and, most recently, “Almost Human.” Like Cuarón, Abrams has garnered himself many accolades, including two Emmy wins for “Lost.”

The team-up was a long time coming. A fan of Cuarón’s for many years, Abrams revealed that he had wanted to work with him ever since meeting him more than two decades ago. “The idea was so [strong] it didn’t have to be Alfonso, but because it was Alfonso, it was even more so. It was an opportunity too exciting to pass up,” he said on HitFix.com. So far, he hasn’t been disappointed. His reaction from the Cuarón-directed pilot was a positive one, as “Entertainment Weekly” cites: “It, to me, was one of those great opening scenes that, when Alfonso described it, I had that sense of, ‘Wait a minute, I’m not changing the channel until I know exactly what’s going on.’”

The pilot sets the stage with a smattering of both experienced actors as well as some faces viewers may not yet recognize. Newcomer Johnny Sequoyah plays 10-year-old Bo, a girl with remarkable powers of levitation, telekinesis and the abilities to control nature and see the future. Hunted for her extraordinary abilities, Bo is protected by kind-hearted Winter, a man who may be more than what he seems.

Seasoned actor Delroy Lindo, who plays Winter, has been a major presence on the big screen, known for roles in “Malcolm X” (1992), “Crooklyn” (1994), “The Cider House Rules” (1999) and “Gone in Sixty Seconds” (2000) among his many film credits. His television experience is not as broad, but viewers may recognize him as Alderman Ronin Gibbons from “The Chicago Code” and Latimer King from the NBC drama “Kidnapped.”

As Bo’s powers become stronger and harder for her to control, she is under a greater threat from the malevolent forces that seek to exploit her abilities to control the world. To help keep her safe, Winter enlists help in the form of Tate (Jake

McLaughlin, “In the Valley of Elah,” 2007) – a wrongly imprisoned death row inmate who, by his own admission, doesn’t like kids. An upand-comer in the acting world, McLaughlin has made one-off appearances in a number of TV series, plus landed a role in the television remake of the Oscar winning film, “Crash” (2004), wherein he, coincidentally, played a character named Bo. Thrown together on a perilous journey, Tate and Bo must earn each

other’s trust as they live a life on the run to keep one step ahead of Bo’s pursuers. Despite the unconventionality of their situation, however, Cuarón makes clear in the HitFix article that “it’s pretty much the story of a family.”

The product of a strong and successful creative team, “Believe” definitely has the makings to become TV’s next must-watch series.

t’s no easy task being a teacher.

I’m not just talking about the countless school teachers here, but about anyone who educates us. It’s not easy to take something complicated and boil it down to its basic elements so that just about anyone can understand it. Some people are good teachers; others, not so much.

Martha Stewart, though, is a natural, as anyone who’s watched her on TV or read one of her books knows.

After spending years building up a lifestyle empire (and following a brief run-in with the law), the domestic goddess has been spending some time doing what she does best: teaching.

“Martha Stewart’s Cooking School” airs weekends on PBS, and it’s a delight to watch, whether you’re an experienced home cook or just starting out on your own culinary journey.

Each week’s 30-minute episode has a focus on a different cooking technique or classic dish or basic ingredient, and with her step-by-step instructions and soothing explanations, Stewart can have even the biggest kitchen klutz cooking with confidence.

Now in its third season, “Martha Stewart’s Cooking School” is certainly Stewart in her element. Inspired by her book of the same name, watching an episode is almost like sitting in a class being taught by your favorite teacher, one who can always make you understand the subject, no matter how tricky it might seem at first.
