Stocks plunge worldwide, the worst since ’08
The stock market buckled Monday under the weight of a crisis in Europe and danger of recession at home. Reeling from a downgrade of American debt, the Dow Jones industrials plunged 634 points. It was the worst day for the market since the financial crisis in the fall of 2008 and extended Wall Street’s sudden, sharp decline.

Stocks have lost 15 percent of their value in just two and a half weeks. Monday was the first trading day since Standard and Poor’s downgraded the United States’ risk-free credit rating, and the selling started at the opening bell. The Dow dropped 250 points in minutes. For the rest of the day, investors looked for safer places for
their money. With few buyers left for stocks, the market could only drift lower. The Dow finished the day down 5.5 percent. The point decline was the worst since Dec. 1, 2008, and the sixth-steepest ever. The average ended at 10,809.85, its first close under 11,000 since November. In a bit of irony following

They also sought refuge in gold, which set a record price. “The S&P downgrade of U.S. government debt is the least of our problems,” said economist Scott Brown at Raymond James & Associates. “The bigger worry is subpar economic growth

Deputy District Attorney Alan Grif fin and David Vega’s defense attorney, Jesse Cosby, met in Judge Charles Currier’s court, Monday, for the final hearing before the scheduled Aug. 16 jury trial. David Vega faces two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, and one count of an attempt to commit a violent felony for the shoot-out that ensued after the death of his son. Vega is accused of murdering son Christopher Lee Vega, 25, and his son's girlfriend, Alisa Montgomery, 31, on May 10, 2010. The shooting followed Vega’s release from Chaves County Detention Center after he was
arrested around 8:30 p.m. on May 9 for disorderly house. When Vega was taken into custody that evening, it was the third time officers had been called to the residence that day. The police retur ned after Vega’s nephew called them. When of ficers approached the residence at about 2 a.m., they say they were immediately fired upon with multiple weapons. Vega’s bullets grazed two of ficers on their heads and wounded the leg and forearm of a third. Vega was shot by police and immediately given medical attention. In the final hearing Cosby confirmed having received the ballistic reports, but stated the fingerprints turned in to the State were inadequate and the results unsatis-
factory. He asked that fingerprint evidence be omitted until provided with more adequate fingerprints. Grif fin added a lastminute witness, along with a video tape of a police interview that was completed during a previous altercation at the residence at 1007 Rancho Road. Cosby had no objection. Even though, he said the State’s position was that the video showed intent for anger, Cosby felt the video supported his client’s claim that “the victim, Chris, was a liar, and that Kathy (Vega’s wife) was overmedicated.” He further noted that Vega had believed Chris was providing Kathy’s drugs. Downgrading, political landscape
WASHINGTON (AP) — The S&P downgrade was more of a statement on the toxic political landscape in Washington than a comment on the nation’s ability to pay its bills. But S&P has its own checkered history. Just a few years ago, the company gave its top triple-A rating to some of the mortgage-backed securities that helped cause the Great Recession. Could it be wrong again? New York-based Standard and Poor’s was upfront about its focus on the political

Spot, the wolf-dog hybrid, was part of the presentation at Spring River Zoo’s annual dinner held Saturday.
Spring River Zoo, at 1306 E. College Blvd., held its annual appreciation dinner for members of The Friends of Roswell Zoo, Saturday evening. Zoo Director Elaine Mayfield introduced the staff and spoke about the exciting things that had happened in the last year, such as the completion of the lake project, Zoo Camp and Earth Camp. “The Friends of Roswell Zoo is a great organization. They’ve sponsored Zoo Camp for 400 children for the last 16 years. They’ve purchased animals and paid for education materials,” said Mayfield. Head Keeper, Marge
Woods was the keynote speaker, with animal representative Spot the wolfdog. The topic during “Zoo Show and Tell” was the number of geriatric animals they maintain at the Spring River Zoo. Spot is 13 years old and the zoo also maintains a number of others including: Bertha the black bear, 27, Betty the bobcat, 17, two bison cows, aged 22 years, a Gemsbok oryx, 19 and a mudjack, 14. “We are unique in doing this. Most zoos will get rid of animals once they are past their prime. It is a compliment to our zoo staff that we can keep animal alive for so long,” said Woods. She told Spot’s life story, or as much as they knew of it. “We got him
from Animal Control. We’ve had him for about 10 years. He was running around loose and Animal Control picked him up.” Woods explained that he was going “a bit nuts” in the close confinement of Roswell Animal Services and was about to be put down when the Zoo became involved and adopted him. To make sure that Spot was comfortable in his new home at Spring River Zoo they got another wolfdog mix, named Trinity, from Texas to keep him company. The event also provided interested members with a flashlight tour. People who are interested in becoming a member of The Friends of Roswell See FRIENDS, Page A8
