TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Crews on Saturday worked to protect several small Arizona communities from two large wildfires by clearing away brush near homes and planning to set fires aimed at robbing the blazes of their fuel. The Wallow Fire, near the White Mountain community of Alpine, grew to 218 square miles, or more than 140,000 acres, by Saturday morning. The fire is the third largest in state history,

with its smoke visible in parts of New Mexico and souther n Colorado. Fire officials said they had zero containment of the fire near the New Mexico-Arizona state line, which has forced an unknown number of people to evacuate. The fire has burned four summer rental cabins since it started May 29, the U.S. Forest Service said. Crews were working to protect homes in Alpine

PARIS (AP) — As China’s Li Na tossed the ball while serving at match point in the French Open final, a cry from a fan in the stands pierced the silence at Court Philippe Chatrier. Distracted, Li stopped and let the ball drop. The words of support were in Mandarin: “Jia you!” — which loosely translates to “Let’s go!” After so many years of “Come on” and “Allez” and “Vamos,” there’s a new language on the tennis landscape. Li became the first Chinese player, man or woman, ... - PAGE B1

Peter Rogers and some of the works he will display at the RMAC, June 18.

Roswell Museum and Art Center will feature the works of Peter Rogers in the upcoming exhibit Peter Rogers: A Painter’s Progress, June 18. More than 60 pieces will line the walls of the museum’s Patricia Gaylord Anderson Gallery. Rogers’ work spans more than five decades and features realist pieces of industrial oil scenes of the 1960s in Alaska, landscapes and portait paintings, in addition to what he calls “visionary pieces” that explore the conscious-subconscious of man. “The show at the museum is a little misleading, because my work is in two parts. The part that I really

feel is my most serious work has to do with consciousness and the evolution of consciousness. So, naturally, it’s not realistic,” Rogers said. “Whereas, the other side of my work is realistic it consists of conventional portraits and landscapes.” Rogers began his career in England, and made great strides at London’s Saint Martin’s School of Art when he was 19. In 1964, he moved to the United States with his wife Carol Hurd, the daughter of Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth. Already an accomplished artist, Rogers was soon commissioned to work on realist pieces throughout the states. One of his primary patrons was the late See ROGERS, Page A3
