Christmas movies, an American tradition for many generations

Movies are a huge part of the American tradition, and our holiday traditions are no exception.

From the earliest days of Hollywood, Christmas movies have been a part of our lives.

As each generation shares its favorite movies from yesteryear, the youth grow up with some classics and some new creations that will no doubt be shared with their children and grandchildren some day.

The earliest Christmas movies with staying power were released just after World War II.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946) George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) has a loving wife, great children and a thriving business until events and the evil Mr. Potter conspire to take away everything he loves most. In the midst wondering if it might not have been better had he never been born, Bailey is interrupted by a bumbling, sweet natured guardian angel named Clarence (Henry Travers) who shows him what life would have been like without him.

“Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) becomes a very popular Santa Claus as he works at Macy’s Department Store. Doris Walker (Maureen O’Hara) is the no-nonsense event coordinator who hires Kringle and has the most problem believing him when he says he is the real Santa Claus. Poor harmless Kringle ends up in a mental hospital and eventually in court where he has his day.

“A Christmas Carol” (1951) Alastair Sim provided the quintessential interpretation of Ebenezer Scrooge in this film classic. Dickens’ Victorian England is believable even in today’s world of high definition video. As each ghost brings Scrooge closer to his moment of awakening, the audience finds itself sitting closer and closer to the edge of their seats.

“White Christmas” (1954) Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye star as a song and dance duo fresh out of the war, trying to make a living on the road.

Another song and dance team, played by Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen end up in a romantic/competitive tangle. Chock full of songs, dance numbers and hijinks, White Christmas is a perennial family favorite.

The 1960s brought us the beginning of animated Christmas classics.

“Rudolph The Red Nosed reindeer” (1964) The inimitable Burl Ives narrated this timeless classic as Sam the Snowman. Sam tells the tale of a reindeer who is not like the other reindeer, and because of that he has to grow strong enough to stand up for himself while the other reindeer learn something of acceptance.

With challenges like the Bumble, and friends like Yukon Cornelius and Hermey, and the dreamy thoughts of Clarice, young Rudolph comes of age and saves the day.

you’ve had your fill of the classic feel-good Christmas flicks, this one can give you the break you need.

“A Charlie Brown Christmas” (1965) Charlie Brown is frustrated with all the commercialism around Christmas. He wants to see the spirit of Christmas celebrated more.

Lucy talks him into directing the school Christmas pageant where he finds a microcosm of his frustrations in the bigger world. Snoopy and Woodstock provide the comic relief and the pathos while Linus keeps Charlie Brown focused and Schroeder entertains us all with his music.

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (1966) The Dr. Seuss classic starring the voice of Boris Karloff as both the Narrator and as the Grinch, and introducing the world to the rich, resonant bass singing voice of Thurl Ravenscroft as he sang the famous song “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch.” A movie about redemption with excitement, humor and no small amount of schmaltz.

This movie plays as well today as it did 50 years ago.

“Frosty The Snowman” (1969) A snowman is brought to life by a magician’s hat, but the magician wants it back. The children of the town try to keep the hat on their new friend so they can enjoy his company, but the magician just won’t give up. Fortunately his rabbit returns the hat and it is Santa who must save the day.

While the 1970s and 1980s brought us mostly memorable animated Christmas movies, there were a few live action movies.

“A Christmas Story” (1983) In 1940s America young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) tries everything he can possibly think of to get a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas.

No matter who he asks, no matter how he approaches the subject, he always gets the same answer “You’ll shoot your eye out kid.” This tribute to mid-century American life illustrates the beginning of American Christmas commercialism with great humor.

“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989) A holiday favorite among a slightly older crowd, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” continues the tale of lovable family man Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase). Clark is determined to provide a traditional family Christmas for his wife, children and their large extended family, only to have his dream holiday derailed by a stingy boss.

The 1990s brought some fresh Christmas stories.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993) This Tim Burton Classic brings new Christmas music, new Christmas themes and a tale as old as time as Pumpkin King Jack Skellington discovers Christmas Town and tries in vain to bring it’s brightness back to Halloween Town. If

“The Santa Clause” (1994) Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) is not happy to learn that his ex wife and her new husband are teaching his 6 year old son that Santa Claus doesn’t exist. Through a comical mishap that only Allen could pull off, he ends up becoming Santa Claus. He’s stuck with the job, like it or not. Between trying to teach his son that there is a Santa Claus, and trying to get a life in his new home at the North Pole, Allen has many humorous and touching moments in the film as he heals from his divorce-inspired stupor.

And the new century has dawned with a mix of old and new.

“How The Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000) Jim Carrey brings a brilliance to the role of the Grinch that takes this Christmas classic to new heights of entertainment. The characters are at the same time surreal and believable as the ageless Dr. Seuss classic is retold with characters you just want to reach out and hug.

“Elf” (2003) Buddy (Will Ferrell) was a foundling who was raised among the elves at the North Pole.

As an adult he has outgrown his peers and his size is wreaking havoc in the workshop.

Returning to New York City, where he was born, Buddy finds his father, Walter (James Caan) who is perpetually on Santa’s naughty list. New York City as seen through the innocent eyes of an elf gives this movie a fresh and delightful perspective.

“The Polar Express” (2004) A boy takes a magical journey full of surprises to the North Pole.

Along the way, he learns to believe in the spirit of Christmas.

“Hogfather” (2006) Based on Terry Pratchett’s novel of the same name, Hogfather is part of his Discworld series. Hogswatch is the Discworld’s version of Christmas. The Hogfather has disappeared and death takes his place on December 32, delivering toys to all the good boys and girls, while his granddaughter Susan tries to find the missing icon. She finds a brilliantly twisted assassin names Mr. Teatime (pronounced Tay a tie me) has hatched a plot to kill the Hogfather. Filled with fantasy and magic and twists that only Pratchett could have imagined, Hogfather is a sleeper of a classic that’s well worth the time to find and watch.

Whether you’re looking for something educational or a toy that’s just for fun, there are a lot of choices for the holidays. New toys include little robot friends full of personality and magnetic blocks that snap together to teach the basics of computer programming.

There’s no shortage of fun and fairly educational items these days. New toys for the holidays include little robot friends full of personality and magnetic blocks that snap together to teach the basics of computer programing.

Here are some toys designed to keep kids entertained without sacrificing on education:

Hands-on tech Tablet screens and apps haven’t gone away, but they’re just not enough on their own.

With these toys, kids can create and build with their hands, not just a tablet.

— Osmo. As kids arrange magnetic blocks or puzzle pieces, their creations show up on the iPad thanks to a mirror attached to the tablet’s camera. By arranging blocks, for instance, kids put together lines of code to guide an on-screen monster. Another game teaches entrepreneurial and math skills by letting kids run their own pizza shop. The base set costs $30. You then buy add-ons, such as coding for $50 and the pizza business for $40. It works only with iPads for now.

— Makey Makey. You connect one end to a computer’s USB port and the other to any material that conducts electricity, such as coins or even a banana. Kids can then turn bananas into keyboards and pencil drawings into controls for video games. The basic set costs $25, though for $50, you get additional clips and connector wires.

— Meccano sets. This is for the tween or young teen who is handy with a wrench and has a lot of time. Even the trio of smaller Micronoids sets ($40) require a decent amount of time and significant motor skills. The larger models, such as the $140 Meccanoid 2.0, can take the better part of a day to construct. Once assembled, these robots can be programed to dance, play games and interact with each other.

— Illumicraft. Don’t let the girly colors or rainbow stickers turn you off. The $20 kit combines science and crafting to introduce basic circuitry.

Projects include light-up diaries, jewelry organizers, smartphone speakers and picture frames.

— Code This Drone. Software company Tynker and drone maker Parrot have joined forces to create this kit, which includes a drone and a one-year subscription to Tynker’s education service. The kit costs $100 to $150 depending on the drone selected. It teaches the basics of coding through games played with an app-controlled mini drone.

Kids can program their own flight plan of flips and turns, or build their own game to send an on-app through an obstacle course, as the real drone mirrors the movements.

Coding for preschoolers Parents with dreams of future high-tech careers are eager for their children to learn computer programming.

And some toy makers say it’s never too early to introduce coding concepts, even if a child is still in diapers.

— Think & Learn Codea-Pillar. Kids as young as 3 can “write” code by snapping together a $50 toy caterpillar.

Each section signifies a command, such as “go straight” or “play sounds.” Hit the execute button to send the toy crawling in the chosen order.

Older kids can program Codea-Pillar to reach targets placed across a room, or send it through an obstacle course of their own creation. While the kids aren’t learning a coding language, the toy does try to teach cause and effect, as well as problem solving.

— Coji. As its name implies, this $60 mini robot teaches pre-readers to code with emojis. It also reacts when you tilt or shake it, and you can control it with your phone or tablet.

— Code & Go Robot Mouse Activity Set. With this $60 toy, kids build a maze with plastic squares and dividers, then program their mouse to make its way through to the cheese at the end.

Robots with personality Kids want more than robots they can guide with a remote or smartphone. Kids want personality, a little friend to whom they can relate and who recognizes them.

— Cozmo. This $180, palmsized robot is expressive, adorable and fun to play with. A team of animators designed more than 500 reactions for the robot to pick from when it sees someone it recognizes, wins or loses a game, or completes a task. The result is a very cute and human-like buddy — think Pixar’s Wall-E. — CHiP. This $200 robot doggie cuddles, plays fetch and follows you around your house. When he’s close to running out of juice, he even heads over to his charging pad and parks himself. This little guy is very loud when he zips around the room, so apartment-dwellers with hardwood floors might want to invest in a rug.

Additional realities “Pokemon Go” isn’t the only way kids can play with augmented reality, the blending of the real and virtual worlds.

And there are toys that make virtual reality affordable.

— Air Hogs Connect: Mission Drone. With this $150 system, kids use an app to fly an included drone over a sensor pad that, combined with a phone or tablet’s camera, places the drone into the game on the screen. As the physical drone moves, so does the one in the game. Kids fly the drone through hoops and shoot down alien invaders. Play is limited by the drone’s estimated 10-minute flying time.

— VR Real Feel Virtual Reality Car Racing Gaming System. This $30 car racing game includes a wireless steering wheel and a virtual-reality headset you stick your phone into. It’s not the fanciest VR technology, but it’s a lot of fun for what you pay. The system is set to ship on Dec. 12.

Researching product recalls worth the time

The Samung Note 7 debacle is still fresh on the minds of Christmas shoppers, and hopefully it will keep everyone in mind that many of the gifts you might buy could be under recall. It’s worth finding out before you buy.

You may remember the hoverboard recall of 2015. Sixty percent of hoverboards sold caused over $2 million in damage. While some of these problems can make for entertaining Youtube videos, too often someone gets hurt.

There are a number of websites you can go to for information about recalls. These are all good ones: • Recalls.com posts government-initiated recalls from federal agencies.

• Safercar.gov offers safety information on vehicles and car equipment, such as children’s safety seats.

• SaferProducts.gov enables consumers to report incidents and safety concerns with regard to consumer products.

• Cpsc.gov/Recalls includes

You can also go to shopping sites, such as Amazon, and read reviews of the product. This is a good time to pay attention to the one and two star reviews as it is the dissatisfied

customers who will tell you what’s wrong with the product.

There was a time when you could go shopping for Christmas gifts without worry. If there was a problem with the product, you took it back to the place you purchased it and got a replacement or your money back. To a small degree that can still be done, but due to global manufacturing and distribution, that’s not as practical as it once was.

Another way to minimize problems around defective products is to buy locally. While electronics are difficult to manufacture locally in most circumstances, anything of a mechanical or artistic nature can usually be made within a few miles of home.

It takes time to research a product and to have confidence that you are getting a good quality item at a fair price. It takes about the same time to find a local craftsman or artisan to make something unique that will be remembered for a lifetime.

It is said that when you are blessed in abundance, it is best to build a longer table, not a higher wall.

Generosity is natural.

Witness the animals in the wild who adopt orphans of other species.

For humans, generosity is most often expressed through charitable giving.

Charities organize around specific problems and with the networking and interconnecting they do, they are able to use donations to help far more people than individual givers could ever hope to.

But when we give, we want to know our donations are making a difference. So many charity scams have arisen over the years that it’s hard to know which ones to trust.

According to the American Grandparents Association, Americans donate

more than $300 billion to charities every year. Old standby charities like the American Red Cross benefit greatly, but over the past few years crowdfunding groups such as GoFundMe have become a part of the landscape.

If not for charities, millions of underprivileged children and families, countless millions of abused spouses and people affected by disasters wouldn’t have a chance. The need is felt most acutely during the holiday season.

The holiday season is when television, mail and the internet are all bombarded with pictures designed to break hearts and crack open wallets.

Between information overload, and emotional manipulation done by both scammers and legitimate charities, it’s easy to be swayed by unscrupulous people.

Fortunately with a bit of

preparation beforehand, you can give to charities you believe in and be well informed as you do. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your holiday giving.

• Give locally. Roswell and Chaves County have many worthy charities that help our friends and neighbors directly. From the Roswell Refuge to the Roswell Humane Society, to the Assurance Home and so many more, Roswell is a generous town with plenty of options to give. If you

aren’t sure which charities to give to, you can ask the advice of any church office in town.

• Start by doing research.

Charity Watch and Charity Navigator, each of which is recommended by the Federal Trade Commission, have carefully researched many different charities. This can be the first stop in verifying the legitimacy of a particular charity. Check for a charity’s registration number and see if it’s registered

A great chance to buy local gifts and help a worthy charity

This is your 34th annual chance to buy local Christmas gifts, Roswell.

The 34th annual Christmas Fantasy Art & Crafts Fair will take place at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, 912 N. Main St., Nov. 25-26.

Doors will open Friday at 10 a.m. and remain open until 5 p.m., on Saturday they will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $1 for ages 13 and up; 12 and under get in free.

Paul and Jane Navarez are organizing the event again.

“This is our fourth year running,” Jane said. “People sometimes make the mistake of thinking every year will be more of the same stuff for sale. We have some new vendors this year.

• Don’t give to cold calls or emails. It’s best to take your time with charitable requests and confirm their authenticity. This may require visiting the website of a particular group or contacting them directly to see how you can help.

You never know who is on the end of a phone call or who sent an email soliciting donations. What’s more, according to Charity Navigator, cold calls are usually conducted by for-profit telemarketers that have contracted with charities.

These contracts are not favorable to the charities — with up to 95 cents of every donated dollar going to the telemarketers.

• Don’t give cash donations, and don’t succumb to pressure to give immediately. Cash is difficult to trace, making it a preferred method of donation collection among scam artists.

If a charity is insisting on cash or wants you to make a decision immediately, this should raise red flags.

• Protect your privacy.

Only work with charities that respect your privacy and will not sell your name or information to other groups.

• Request information.

Reputable charities will tell you how they will spend your money and if your gift is tax-deductible.

• Be aware of sound-alike groups. Some scam artists create sound-alike organizations to trick donors.

In such instances, donors believe they are donating to legitimate charities but are really giving to another organization. In 2016, the Federal Trade Commission brought charges against four sound-alike cancer groups, highlighting just how prevalent such faulty organizations are.

By taking the advice in this article and the websites of the organizations we’ve listed, you can be well prepared to give with confidence.

Navarez and her husband will have a booth of their own.

“Our artwork is made out of used rope and used horseshoes and metal,” Navarez said.

Terry Bogle, owner of Reins for Life, said this is not their first year to benefit from the largesse of the Christmas Fantasy Arts and Crafts Fair.

“They let us do the silent auction last year,” Bogle said. “Usually they skip around to different nonprofits, but they called us again this year and asked us if we’d like to do it again, and I said sure.”

Members of Reins for Life are greatly appreciative of the generosity of their sponsors who make this possible. The silent auction gives them much needed publicity, as well as helping them continue to pay the bills.

Reins for Life offers therapy at no cost to anyone in need.

Bogle welcomes anyone who wishes to learn about what Reins for Life can do

for them.

“We’ll have a table set up, brochures, a TV with video of some of the things that we do, and 5x7 pictures of different clients around the table, along with the items being bid on.”

Bogle said they have need of more staff at the moment.

“We have a speech therapist,” Bogle said, “We’re trying to find a physical and an occupational therapist, but we can’t offer full-time.”
