WEEK 16 PREVIEW

The last time the Detroit Lions were this close to the playoffs, Barry Sanders was in their backfield. Sanders now is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a place few if any of the recent Lions will end up. His former team has been rebuilt by GM Martin Mayhew and coach Jim Schwartz, and a win over San Diego on Saturday will secure Detroit an NFC wild-card slot. Since making the postseason in 1999 at 8-8 — one year after Sanders retired — the Lions have had one winning year (9-7 in 2000) and six last-place finishes. - PAGE B1

SANTA PASSES POLL

WASHINGTON (AP) — Why do kids believe a chubby guy in a flying sleigh can deliver joy across America? Because their parents do. A whopping 84 percent of grown-ups were once children who trusted in Santa’s magic, and lots cling to it still. Things are changing fast these days, with toddlers wishing for iPads ... - PAGE A3

Roswell will receive a white Christmas with all the difficult driving conditions that snow entails. At 8 a.m., Friday, Roswell Fire Department’s Deputy Chief Chad Hamill said they had already worked three accidents since the day shift started at 7:30 a.m.

By 9 a.m., the Roswell Police were working five dif ferent accident calls around the city and with an additional two received in the county. An hour later, the New Mexico State Police offices in Roswell reported a total of 20 ongoing accident investigations, including three rollovers. Highway 70 to Clovis and Portales, and Highway 285, Roswell

to Vaughn were closed. Statewide, six highways were reported closed as of noon on Friday, including I-25, I-40, U.S. 550, NM 102, U.S. 102, U.S. 64/87. Severe driving conditions were noted on U.S. 56, and in those areas along I-40 and 1-25 that were still open. Difficult driving conditions were

Grants and parts of wester n New Mexico were slammed with more than a foot of snow by Friday mor ning, the National Weather Service reported. A winter storm warning for the state expired in the

afternoon, but meteorologists said the snow wasn’t expected to clear up until the weekend. Some parts of the state saw 17 inches of snow as state and local police responded to dozens of minor accidents. No major injuries were reported. Four-hundred twentysix needy families in Roswell were given a reason to be thankful this Christmas. This week, the Roswell Corps of The Salvation Army completed its food and toy distributions through the Angel Tree program. This decades-

old tradition provides food to families, and toys for those families with children, aged newborn to 17 years. Capt. Mandy Perez said last year the program aided more than 300 families. Noting the growth, Perez said the recession and increased community awareness resulted in the higher number of families being helped this year.

Families signed up in November to receive donations through the program. When they came in, families had to present ID for all members, including children, a proof of address and their household income. Perez said it was really easy to qualify for the program. The Roswell

Payroll tax cut lives on: Congress gives its approval

WASHINGTON (AP) — After weeks of bickering and doubt, Congress delivered a last-minute holiday tax cut extension to 160 million workers Friday along with further unemployment benefits for millions laid off in the nation’s fierce recession and weak economic recovery. It was a convincing victory for President Barack Obama, a humbling retreat for House

Republicans. Back-to-back voice vote approvals of the two-month special measure by the Senate and House came in mere seconds with no debate, just days after House Republican leaders had insisted that full-blown negotiations on a full-year bill were the only way to prevent an immediate tax increase on Jan. 1. Most members of Con-

gress were already gone for the holidays, leaving behind just a few legislators to take formal action. Obama was leaving in the after noon for a delayed vacation in Hawaii. The measure passed despite lingering grumbling from tea party Republicans. It buys time for talks early next year on how to finance the year -long extensions. It will keep in place a 2

percentage point cut in the payroll tax — a salary boost of about $20 a week for an average worker making $50,000 a year — and prevent almost 2 million unemployed people from losing jobless benefits averaging $300 a week. Senate and House Republican leaders did gain a major win last week, winning a provision that would require Obama to make a

swift decision on whether to approve construction of the Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline. To stop construction, Obama, who had wanted to put the decision off until after the 2012 election, would have to declare that it was not in the nation’s interest. Nancy Pirtle traded her typing skill for organ lessons STORY AND PHOTO BY VANESSA KAHIN RECORD STAFF WRITER

Nancy Pirtle

Nancy Pirtle has been an important part of many of the most cherished and unforgettable life events of Roswell residents for almost six decades. After 59 years of contributing a soundtrack to weddings, funerals and Sunday worship services, Pirtle is retiring her post as church organist for Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Aside from her work as a church organist, Pirtle is one of Roswell’s musical inspirations, who has taught scores of people how to play piano and organ over the years. Her journey to becoming part of Roswell’s musical tradition began in Los

Angeles, where Nancy Pirtle, nee Welch, was born. Her parents discovered her musical ability by coincidence when Pirtle was only 5 years old. At the time, her family visited relatives who had a 12-year-old daughter who played piano. The girl offered to play for them.

“I’m told I heard every mistake she made and commented on each one,” Pirtle recalled with a laugh. “My parents realized I had some musical ability and started me on lessons.” Although she does not remember her piano instructor’s first name, Pirtle said Mrs. Fletcher impacted her life forever. She called her a “wonderful teacher.” “She gave me a strong See SPOTLIGHT, Page A6
