Two fallen New Mexico state police officers from Roswell will now be eternally remembered. Wednesday marked the 10-year anniversary of the deaths of Patrolmen Damon Talbott and Ramon Robert Solis, who were killed in a helicopter crash during a training exercise in Roswell on Oct. 19, 2001. Under a bright sky and among solemn faces Wednesday morning, Gov. Susana Martinez, representatives from the Departments of Transportation and Public Safety, members of the New Mexico State Police, local officials and family and friends paid tribute to the two officers at a memorial highway dedication in their honor. A four-mile segment of U.S. Highway 70, from milepost 325 to 329 in Chaves County, will be named the “Patrolman Damon Talbott and Patrolman Ramon Robert Solis Memorial Highway.” The patrolmen were killed in a training exercise, conducted to teach them how to set up landing zones at the scene of medical emergencies. Talbott and Solis had both been with the New Mexico State Police for 10 months after graduating from the same academy class. Talbott graduated from Roswell High School, later attending Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell. He then joined the New Mexico State Police Acade-

Called to serve in situations during which it’s not always easy to demonstrate positive character, six individuals have shown it’s entirely possible to do just that. Of the six law enforcement and first-response personnel honored for their character, it was a quiet and humble member of the Roswell Police Department who received an overall
award during the Honoring the Badge: Building and Upholding the Public Trust event at the Joe Skeen Building, Wednesday evening. Honoring the Badge is just one of various ways that Character Counts! of Chaves County recognizes members of the community who uphold the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring See HONORS, Page A6

Lions, tigers shot after owner frees them
ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Sheriff’s deputies shot nearly 50 wild animals — including 18 rare Bengal tigers and 17 lions — in a big-game hunt across the state’s countryside Wednesday after the owner of an exotic-animal park threw their cages open and committed suicide in what may have been one last act of spite against his neighbors and police. As homeowners nervously hid indoors, officers armed with high-powered rifles and shoot-tokill orders fanned out through fields and woods to hunt down 56 animals that had been turned loose from the Muskingum County Animal Farm by owner Terry
Thompson before he shot himself to death Tuesday. After an all-night hunt that extended into Wednesday afternoon, 48 animals were killed. Six others — three leopards, a grizzly bear and two monkeys — were captured and taken to the Columbus Zoo. A wolf was later found dead, leaving a monkey as the only animal still on the loose. Those destroyed included six black bears, two grizzlies, a baboon and three mountain lions. Dead animals were being buried on Thompson’s farm, officials said. See ANIMALS, Page A6
