It was 66 years ago on a day not unlike today that World War II came to an end. To commemorate the announcement of the war’s end on Aug. 14, 1945, as well as those who served during the war, local World War II vets and their loved ones gathered for a Spirit of ’45 Day ceremony at Peachtree Village, Saturday. Congress established the Spirit of ’45 Day last year. Mayor Del Jurney, Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., Secretary of Veterans Affairs of New Mexico Timothy Hale, and musician Tom Blake showed their spirit and support while honoring local veterans. “I want you to know how honored I am to be your mayor,” said Jur ney. “We’re a blessed community. ... most important, that their accounts be remembered. “We can never forget the medals in the boxes that represent ... sacrifice beyond our comprehension,” Pearce said. “We are the beneficiaries ... of that nobleness of the human spirit called service.” Pearce and Jurney gave an honorable mention to five World War II veterans: Fred T. OCHOA FORCES GAME 3

One swing; one simple, yet powerful swing. That’s all it took for Alpine’s Nacho Ochoa to change the complexion of Saturday’s Pecos League playoff game at Joe Bauman Stadium. Ochoa walked to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh as a pinch hitter for Eric Garcia. - PAGE B1

Only one of 20 schools in the Roswell district made its adequate yearly progress mark in 2011, but a few just barely missed the mark, the district superintendent said in a recent interview. Goddard High School, which met AYP last year, fell short in making its reading rating by just three students, while reaching its targets in math. If a school doesn’t meet AYP in both reading and math, the school does not make AYP. Berrendo Middle is another school that

missed making AYP by a hair. Like Goddard, it met its math rating, but not its reading rating, and by just a couple of students, Roswell Independent School District Superintendent Michael Gottlieb said.

Four other schools in the district made their math ratings (Missouri Avenue Elementary, Pecos Elementary, Sidney Gutierrez Middle Charter School and Washington Avenue Elementary), but only one school made its reading rating, Sidney Gutierrez, making it the only school in the Roswell Independent School District that made AYP. AYP represents the annual academic targets in reading and math that the state, school districts and schools must reach to be considered on track with the federally mandated goal of

Bachmann wins Iowa straw poll Medical examiner rules AMES, Iowa (AP) — Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann won a test vote of Iowans on Saturday, a show of strength five months before the state’s caucuses kick off the GOP presidential nominating season. The result is the first indication of what Iowans think of the field of Republicans competing for the chance to challenge President Barack Obama next fall. But it’s hardly predictive of who will win the winter Iowa See IOWA, Page A3
