Steve Pearce dropped from House post By Jeff Tucker Record Staff Writer
U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce has been removed from a leadership position in the U.S. House of Representatives after he and a group of conservative House Republicans sided with Democrats in opposing a trade resolution that would grant President Obama fast-track trade promotion authority. Fast-track trade authority would give the president the authority to negotiate international trade agreements that Congress can approve or disapprove, but which Congress cannot amend or filibuster.
Pearce was informed by House Republican leaders on June 15 he had been removed from the House GOP whip team because Pearce voted on June 12 against a House leadership-backed resolution to combine a fast-track trade bill with a measure known as Trade Adjustment Assistance, which is intended to give compensation to workers displaced by trade agreements. Pearce, R-Hobbs, was appointed a member of the whip team in January by House Speaker John Boehner, with whom Pearce has sparred in the past. Pearce voted for Boehner for speaker of the House in January,
but voted against Boehner for speaker when the House reorganized after the 2012 general elections. Whips are appointed by both Republican and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate to ensure party discipline and advise party leaders how members intend to vote on upcoming bills. U.S. Reps. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyoming, and Trent Franks, R-Arizona, were also removed from the Republican whip team by GOP leaders after they and 31 other House Republicans voted against the trade procedural rule on June 12. Pearce said he was told his removal
from the GOP whip team was a direct result of his June 12 vote on the procedural rule. “Not much has changed,” Pearce said in a statement after his removal from the leadership position. “I came here to represent the people of the Second Congressional District of New Mexico. That means considering each vote on its merits and striving to do the right thing for them. Sometimes that demands casting hard votes, as I did (on June 12). I always strive to vote on principle and that won’t change.”

Left: A bevy of bees dance around a century plant at the corner of South Lea Avenue and West Reed Street Monday afternoon. The name century plant is actually a misnomer. The large agaves live between 10 to 30 years and grow a tall stalk when they bloom. The plant in the photo is estimated to be about 20-feet tall. Above: An apparent error in the control tower nearly ends in disaster as a bee, coming in for a landing, is nearly struck by a bee taking off from a century plant bloom Monday. Evasive maneuvers were initiated and a deadly crash was averted.

Chong said he took this trip to see his friend Max. “I want to see the UFO museum, too,” he said. “I do believe in aliens. I don’t know if they are green or grey, but I believe they exist.” Chong said he regrets that he can’t stay for the UFO Festival. “I can only stay two days before I have to head north to Denver and back to Los Angeles and from there to New York City for work.”
