Romney takes two WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney scored a hard-won, home state triumph in Michigan and powered to victory in Arizona Tuesday night, gaining a two-state primary sweep over Rick Santorum and precious momentum in the most turbulent Republican presidential race in a generation. The two other candi-
dates, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, made little effort in either state, pointing instead to next week’s 10state collection of Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses.
Romney’s Arizona triumph came in a race that was scarcely contested, and he pocketed all of the 29 Republican National Convention delegates at stake
in the winner -take-all state. Michigan was as different as could be — a hardfought and expensive battle in Romney’s home state that he could ill afford to lose and Santorum made every effort to win. Returns from 74 percent of Michigan’s precincts See GOP, Page A2

The New Mexico Lobos stumbled out of the Mountain West gate, took a two-game lead in the back stretch, stumbled again and make the turn toward the finish line neck-in-neck with San Diego State and UNLV. Will it be a photo finish with three teams at 10-4? “I think we are as urgent as we’ve ever been,” said Lobo Drew Gordon. “It’s a street fight every time we go out. Americans feel better Shriners, IHOP flip for kids about econ recovery
NEW YORK (AP) — Americans are feeling better about the economy again, but will it last this time? A widely watched barometer of consumer confidence surged in February to its highest level in a year as Americans took note of improving job prospects among friends and family and falling unemployment, which is now at a three-year low. The brighter assessment released Tuesday by a private research group reflected a more upbeat attitude for the nation generally as the economy picks up. That is a boon for President Obama as he seeks re-election. Polls, including a recent Associated PressGfK survey, show the Democratic incumbent is beginning to benefit politically from improved views of the
economy. The rising confidence among consumers gave confidence to Wall Street, too, helping it to reclaim the last of the ground it held before plunging into the depths of the Great Recession. The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 13,000 on Tuesday for the first time since May 19, 2008, four months before the fall of Lehman Brothers investment bank and the worst of the financial crisis. Tuesday’s gain puts the Dow 1,160 points below its all-time high, set Oct. 9, 2007. The Great Recession began two months later. But consumer confidence is still below the level of a healthy economy, and trouSee RECOVERY, Page A7

The Roswell Chamber of Commerce unveiled its new digital sign Tuesday, celebrating the culmination of a year -long project that was supported through contributions from Xcel Energy, Hike It and Spike It, Roswell Livestock & Farm Supply, Pioneer Bank and Roswell Regional Hospital. Dorrie Faubus-McCarty, executive director, said the chamber had wanted to
replace its old sign, which was 40 years old, for quite some time. “It helps us to get the word out, now that everything has gone electronic,” Faubus-McCarty said. “When I got here three years ago, we were still doing paper newsletters. By cutting those out, I cut $1,400 a month out of the budget, going electronic. So the sign just helps us to get the word out even further.” Faubus-McCarty said the See SIGN, Page A2
