SeaPerch teams land spot at Internationals

Two out of three SeaPerch teams qualified for the eighth annual International SeaPerch Challenge through competitions at FAU High School on Feb. 2 and South Broward High School on March 17.

The Hydrophobiacs team -- consisting of junior Kaitlyn Bergeron, sophomore Benjamin Bergeron, senior Samantha Bergeron and sophomore Fabrizio Parraga -- were able to qualify for internationals on Feb. 2, receiving four trophies.

“My devotion to SeaPerch has not only given my team and me the opportunity to compete in the (international) competition last year but also this June as well, which we will represent the school at finals,” Kaitlyn Bergeron said. “This experience has been so rewarding since the beginning, not just teaching me so much about mechanics and STEM but about life as well.”

The Golden Maelstroms team -- consisting of junior Maria Ilonta, junior Camila Castellano and freshman Andrea Castellano -- qualified in March with its mostly 3D-printed remotely operated vehicle (ROV).

“After not qualifying at the first competition, my team worked

day and night until the next competition,” club president Ilonta said. “We worked to improve our design so that it could achieve maximum agility. In the end, all of our hard work paid off.”

SeaPerch is an interactive club open to students that want to learn how to apply the principles of engineering in a hands on environment.

Each team had to design and build their own Remotely Operated Vehicle, or ROV for short,

from scratch.

“SeaPerch was a simple way to express my interests in engineering in an environment where others feel the same way,” Benjamin Bergeron said.

The Hydrophobiacs won first place in the puzzle challenge, first place in the engineering notebook, second place overall, and third place in the obstacle course.

“SeaPerch is an interesting and fun club where I got the opportunity to shine in many aspects in

STEM,” Parraga said. “I am surprised by all the things that I have learned with the amazing people that taught me all that I needed to know. With my team qualifying to go to Nationals to represent Pompano, we hope to get first place for our pride as Golden Tornadoes.”

Internationals will run through the weekend of June 1-3 at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

60 aides to guide gifted camp

This summer’s sixth annual gifted camp will be educating about 335 elementary and middle school students with the help of about 60 volunteers.

“It’s a great opportunity to work with kids and earn service hours,” said sophomore Luke Lindgren.

Volunteers will receive about 70 to 80 hours over the two weeks from July 16-27, participating in the activities from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The camp is split between elementary and middle school kids.

The former have to take three set classes, and an elective class, also

known as their humanities, and the latter only have three humanities.

Humanities include courses like cooking, art, debate, scientific visualization, robotics, newspaper and world civilization; the set classes are courses like physical education, English, STEM and marine biology.

“I participated in YSA in middle school, but never in the gifted camp,” junior Rachel Raybuck said. “I wanted to see what it was like and see all the smart kids that remind me of myself when I was younger.”

Eighth graders from all over the county have begun registering for the upcoming school year.

Registration was held in different locations depending on students’ last names and took place from 5-7 p.m. on April 16 and 18.

Throughout the event, incoming freshmen got to learn about the school’s academic opportunities, choose classes and investigate clubs.

Sophomore Josh Tinoco assisted at the event by selling lanyards and filming the incoming freshmen’s first experience at school.

“Each year, more and more

students are leaving our school because of bad grades,” Tinoco said. “I’m expecting to see a lot more enthusiasm for education from these incoming freshmen.”

Eighth grader Jayla Willows from Somerset Pines Academy was one of the many incoming freshmen at the registration.

“We were dancing in the living room when she got accepted here,” her mother, Martha Willows, said.

As for Jayla Willows, she was excited because she was now going to “be part of the PBHS community,” and she is “ready to start her future.”

BSO holds morning meetings on campus

Broward Sheriff officers have been holding periodic meetings on campuses and not at their precincts, part of the changes to school security as a result of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

These morning meetings, called Roll Call, where officers are given their daily assignments by their sergeants, started April 4. Roll Call does not happen everyday or at every school, and all BSO officers attend these meetings, unless they are handling 911 or accident calls.

“It is contingent upon the sergeant and what he wants because that’s who determines

what they will do,” school resource deputy Stephanie Smith said.

The meetings were moved to discourage people from committing major acts of violence at schools.

“It’s for the children,” Smith said. “We are hoping that if anyone that has any ideas, or crazy ideas in reference to doing harm to anybody on this campus, they will think that ‘Man, maybe I shouldn’t do that at Pompano Beach High School because just the other day I saw 10 cop cars there.’ So it is more so a deterrent than anything else.”

A humanitarian crisis does not need more violence, and the Douma chemical attacks did not need to be met with missiles.

Bashar Al-Assad regime’s chemical attack on April 7 killed about 70 people through chlorine gas and sarin, both nerve agents.

President Trump’s response was to attack supposed chemical warehouses with missles, something that Trump did last year.

Yet missile strikes have done little to deter future chemical attacks.

Assad has been using chemicals on his citizens since 2013, when an attack killed seven people.

Trump’s 59 missile strikes last year did little to deter Assad’s chemical weapons program, which has still managed to attack Syrian civilians, so why continue to attack a regime that will continue to dust themselves off and develop these weapons?

Because it is the only thing that the United States is willing to do.

While the U. S. government is okay with using millions of dollars on means of war, only 11 Syrian refugees have been admitted into the country since the beginning of this year, according to National Public Radio.

Trump claims that he wants to save the Syrians from the “monster” (Assad), but he doesn’t want to let them into the country and has tried numerous times to

ban all immigrants from Muslim nations.

To those that say that the strikes are an attack on the regime, you are wrong. The attacks are on the Syrians.

Assad is killing Syrians and the world’s response is to go and bomb the country. Our so-

Time to make a difference

As we students all anticipate the end of the school year, and some of us prepare for our next endeavors at college or in the military, we reflect upon our high school experience overall.

What is different about us, about this year, is what we have gone through together as a school and community. While many of us don’t realize it, everything that has happened this year will change us forever as individuals, as a community, as a generation.

As individuals, a community and a generation, we have endured racial conflict, political

injustice, the Stoneman Douglas shooting and much more, yet we remain stronger than ever.

Many of us have realized our values through these traumas we have faced. Too many of us lost friends this year, whether it was alumnus Andrew Coffey in October, or one of the 17 killed in Parkland on Feb. 14.

As a community, we have leaned on each other and picked each other up in the face of tragedy and walked away stronger, fighting for what we believe in. We have organized rallies,

marches and protests, we have made our voices heard and we will not stop until society has corrected injustice.

As a generation, we must pave the way for the future. We have to begin thinking about those who come after us, our children and the next generation. We have to make sure that, for their sake and for our sake, we make a difference in this world.

As individuals, a community and a generation, we have endured more than anyone should.

One person killed by hazing or

a school shooting is too many.

These losses will affect us for the rest of our lives, and we need to let them. We need to not be numbed, but feel more from these losses. Let your life be changed by these events, and begin to make a difference.

As we move into summer and the next school year, no matter what our futures hold, we must take pride in what we have gone through, where we came from, embrace the changes we faced this year and make those whom we have lost proud.

ID enforcement necessary

Students have always known they must wear their IDs on campus at all times. It’s clearly written in the Student Code of Conduct, but it wasn’t enforced anywhere near as much as it has been recently until this school year.

Now for a regulation to be forced upon students so soon, it takes time for students to get accustomed to it. Still, it is fair to punish students with detention simply because on the one day they accidently forgot it.

Granted, procedures to punish a student without an ID have been shifting.

Junior Madison Philips was caught not wearing her ID and instead of getting punished with a detention, she got a visitor sticker and received a warning.

“I came to school late and when I was getting my late pass, since I didn’t have my ID, they sent me to the front office where I had to sign a paper and they gave me a visitors pass,” Philips

said.

Junior Giovany Suarez, who also didn’t have his ID, paid $5 to avoid receiving a detention.

Suarez was given the options to pay $5 for a new ID and a visitor’s pass, or call home to have someone drop off his ID; if not, he would receive a Friday detention. Both students were caught with the same crime, but their penalties were different.

Holding students in the front office simply because they didn’t have their ID causes them to be late to class, like senior Luiza De Rezende, who tweeted: “So I missed 30+ minutes of class because I forgot my ID today… yes, that makes sense.”

Giving detentions on Fridays also interferes with students who have to go to work on Fridays, like junior Brinya Kydd, who received a detention but didn’t serve it because she had work.

Although the specific consequences still need to be consistent and fair, the overall shift toward strictness should be

appreciated.

Campus monitor Jamesey Stone stressed why students should understand the importance of the IDs. “Wearing your ID helps us identify you,” Stone said. “First of all, we don’t know all the freshmen, juniors and seniors; they help us identify our kids.

Kids have to understand that whatever profession you choose in life, they’ll require you to wear an ID badge. So why not get used to wearing them now.”

This year security is focusing on getting all the students into the habit of wearing their badges because next school year new technology will be introduced that will require students to wear their IDs. “We have iPads and programs that scan the barcode of a student’s ID and lets us know what class they’re in,” Stone said.

Micro-tech specialist Ivonne Coronado recognizes that consequences need to be sensitive in order to be effective.

“They’re revising that because we don’t want you guys to be out of class and late, so they’re starting this week a new procedure that is the same as the dress code,” Coronado said.

On April 30, new procedures were in place, according to front office secretary Erika Rodriguez, who assists the security in administering the punishments.

Students will sign to acknowledge a first or second warning before being issued a detention for their third infraction.

“With everything that’s happening in schools these days, that’s the best way,” Rodriguez said. “At least with their ID, they can identify students from our school or not because any young person can walk in, but if they didn’t have an ID, we can recognize it.”

As long as the new procedure is applied consistently to all students and stays in place long enough to evaluate its effectiveness, I’m all in favor of it.

Senioritis cure 4 leaders honored at banquet

Vincent Garcia, Vikasni Mohan, Homar Ali-Maria and Alexis Roberson are not used to being called to the assistant principal’s office. So when they were notified on Feb. 20 to see Jill Samaroo, they didn’t know what to expect.

It was good news: they were notified they were candidates for Broward County’s Outstanding Senior leaders award.

Garcia, Mohan, Ali-Maria and Roberson were invited to a banquet at the Signature Grand hosted by the county on March 23, where they were given their awards and honored by the county and school representatives.

“It was a nice ceremony and out of all of the senior leaders picked from around the county only a few got scholarships, but we did get awards that go around your neck. It’s really cute,” Roberson said.

Twenty seniors had completed applications and resumes. Then administration and faculty voted.

“It was extremely difficult to pick the winners this year,” Samaroo said. “Normally, it is pretty clear who should win, but this year it was more difficult.”

Every candidate for the award holds at least one major leadership position at the school in organizations such as National Honor Society, Student Government Association and Health Occupations Students of America.

Mohan felt it helped that she was president or vice president of multiple organizations, including NHS, HOSA, Business Professionals of America, Mu Alpha Theta math honor

society and Science National Honor Society.

All of the winners contributed countless hours to their school activities and to better the school as a whole.

“I like to think I was given the honor because of my hundreds of hours spent in extracurricular activities, mainly Student Government, that have let me help our student body have a greater experience on campus,” Garcia said.

Many of the nominees have been involved with community service and leadership organizations since beginning high school, and those organizations have shaped their interests and future aspirations.

“I have been volunteering at the same elementary school since freshman year every single Friday, which has helped me build such a passion for community service and extracurriculars,” said Ali-Maria, who served this year as NHS president, Mu Alpha Theta vice president, Young Democrats secretary and HOSA project manager All of the recipients of the Outstanding Senior Leaders Award credit a great part of their high school experience to their extracurriculars and leadership positions and encourage underclassmen to follow similar paths.

“The number one tip I would have for underclassmen who want to follow a similar path is don’t forget the reason why you’re doing it,” Ali-Maria said. “Yes, it might look good on a resume, but make sure you are doing what you are doing with passion. It makes it that much more special and rewarding at the end of the day.”

‘Infinity War’: The biggest one of them all

“Avengers: Infinity War” hit theaters in late April, and it’s on pace to be the highest grossing movie not only in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe but also of all time and all uni- and multiverses. And it may be one of the best.

(Don’t worry. This review will be spoiler-free.)

“Avengers: Infinity War” is the third film in the Avengers film series (19th in the MCU overall), and it tells the tale of the Avengers teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange and Black Panther to defeat Thanos to save half the universe from Thanos’ master plan.

The cast gets expanded from the original seven Avengers to a cast of over 25 people, making “Infinity War” the biggest Marvel movie ever in terms of star power. We all know and love these characters from their respective movies, but the large cast made the movie feel huge with over 25 people on the screen fighting for a common goal: to stop Thanos from getting all six Infinity Stones.

“Infinity War” is different from every Marvel movie that came

before it (and most likely after) for many reasons.

First, this movie takes on a much more somber tone than the first three films. In the first three, the main conflict seemed like something that a team of superpowered people could handle with little to no problems or casualties.

In “Infinity War,” Thanos is an immortal villain with centuries of knowledge that cannot be beaten by anyone or anything. That fact alone makes this two-hour-and30-minute movie feel like the heroes’ last stand before they fall at the hand of this undefeatable villain.

Second, the stakes are much higher than any hero film that came before it. If the heroes lose, trillions of innocent people die at the snap of Thanos’ fingers. The death count in previous movies may have been thousands, or hundreds of thousands, but never trillions.

Third, the big picture was expanded from just New York or Sokovia or Wakanda to the entire universe. No previous Marvel movie has ever hung the fate of the entire universe in the balance.

Robert Downey Jr., for example, has perfected the art of portraying Tony Stark down to a T. He somehow manages to go from hopeful for the future to utterly and completely devastated and back again without breaking a sweat.

Stark suffers immensely from PTSD due to the events that happened in the first Avengers film, and in this one, he comes face to face with the entity that caused the events that traumatize him daily. By the end of the film, he’s left broken and beaten down

from fighting his biggest fear and RDJ makes you feel Stark’s pain until you’re crying right along with him.

Another example is Tom Holland and his incessant ability to make you root for him.

Peter Parker is only 17 years old at the time of “Infinity War,” so you would think that he would be the most immature person out of them all and the one making a huge mess of things, but it’s the complete opposite.

‘Quiet Place’ pioneers horror genre

“A Quiet Place” debuted in theaters in early April, and it’s already being hailed by critics and multiple celebrities as one of the best horror films ever made.

The film, directed by The Office’s John Krasinski, tells the tale of a family of five who has to live as quietly as possible due to an invasion of aliens called Death Angels who hunt only by sound.

The cast was perfectly balanced

with veterans like Krasinski and Emily Blunt (“The Devil Wears Prada,” “Mary Poppins”) and newcomers like Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. Krasinski and Blunt are married and parents in real life, which makes their on screen chemistry just as real and palpable as it is off screen.

Bellhorn wins All-Florida with picture of picture

Competing against 23 other contestants from the state, sophomore Khylin Bellhorn’s photo entries were the only to win an All-Florida, the highest possible award offered, in the quick turn photography challenge at the Florida Scholastic Press Association convention, where students across Florida learn about the different aspects of journalism.

The challenge required students to submit three images that fit the theme of “Emerge,

Expand, Evolve,” so Bellhorn focused upon technological advancements. “(The photo set showed) the development of cameras and photography over time,” Bellhorn said. “It went from Polaroid, which was just pictures, and then to video and then to pictures and video on the DSLR.” Of the three pictures, Bellhorn says that the Polaroid used to represent the “Emerge” portion of the theme was her favorite because it allowed her to get the most creative. Without any Polaroid film on hand, she had to improvise.

“It was a picture of a Polaroid camera and my friend shaking a ‘Polaroid’… We took a piece of paper and just shook it until you couldn’t tell it wasn’t film,” Bellhorn said.

Bellhorn believes she won because she stuck to the theme very well and her photoset demonstrated it in a fun and unique way.

“I kept the theme centered around journalism rather than something else,” Bellhorn said.

After seeing some of the other submissions, Bellhorn, who has been actively practicing photography for only the past year, was very surprised to have won.

Bottom Evolve: The DSLR shows the evolution of visual journalism. Bellhorn submitted the three photos as a series.

“(FSPA) posted all the winners on Twitter and I saw I was nominated for an All-Florida,” Bellhorn said. “I was on FaceTime with my friend and I was like, ‘I won!’ and then we texted the film and tech group chat… I couldn’t believe it.”

With the fast changing world around us, trends are starting and disappearing with the blink of an eye. Among these trends from the last year are the odd eyebrow shapes and designs emerging. Below are five of the most popular and strange eyebrow trends, tested and rated.

Halo Brows Rating: 0.5 - I get the idea of what it is trying to be, but it was way too hard and just plain odd to do for any reason.

Wavy Brows Rating: 3.75 - This brow could be cute. It’s just like the fishtail brow in that its wearability depends on the outfit and event. The wavy brow was one of the easiest by far. The only downside of the easiness was having to put glue on my eyebrow, which freaked me out. I would do this again for a joke picture but not actual life.

Fishtail Brows Rating: 2.5 - This definitely wasn’t as hard as the halo brow and it’s definitely more everyday wearable. The first brow took a while to set it out right, but once you figure out how to shape with the hair gel or glue and then draw the top, it’s much easier. This brow could work for the right event or outfit.

Glitter Brows Rating: 5 - I love these. The glitter looks amazing. Besides the whole scaredof-glue fiasco, this was one of the easiest eyebrows, and if the shape of the brow got messed up, a Q-tip fixed it perfectly. I would do this everyday. I will do these everyday. Please bury me with these brows.

More ocean, less trash

The Environmental Club held its first beach cleanup of the school year at Pompano Beach Fishing Pier from 9:30 a. m. to 12:30 p. m. on Sat. April 21.

The cleanup was hosted by environmental science and biology teacher Muriel Dupre and physics teacher Ralph Marchand.

“It was a great experience having 11 students participate in cleaning,” said Dupre, the

club sponsor. “We collected a lot of trash, but it showed us that maybe there’s a difference being made in how they clean the beaches because the beach was a lot cleaner. Everybody needs to do their own little bit to help out the environment.”

Club members collected 11 clear plastic bags of trash during three hours roaming on the beach.

Football prepares for spring game and fall season

With a new coaching staff comes a new mindset for the football team. Its goals include winning the annual spring game, which will be held at 7 p.m. on May 23 at Pine Crest.

“Exercises and practices for the spring game have been done differently this year,” head coach Melvin Jones said. “I’ve definitely let my assistant coaches take more of the lead, and we’re definitely doing a lot more running and a lot of weight training.”

The spring game has always played an essential part in preparing the team for the upcoming fall season, which starts with the kickoff classic game. The players believe that the outcomes for their seasons will be better this year due to the help of their new coaching staff.

“The new coaches will play a huge role in our success this season,” junior captain Corey Little said. “They’ve brought one thing that the football team has lacked for a long time, and that is consistent intensity.”

“As the offensive-line and defensive-line captain, I lead through drills helping the younger linemen with their technique and form along the way,” Little said.

Drills in practice include Wdrills, agility drills and team scrimmages, all executed by the coaching staff and captains.

Players believe that the training and continuous support from the new coaches will push them to do well, especially at the game.

“The training hauls the players to do better,” sophomore Jackson Pace said. “We have intense practices with great coaches leading them.”

Goals are persistently being made by this new team, and they not only want to win more but also work on their teamwork skills and brotherhood as a whole.

“We want to live as a family.

We want to hold the rope,” Jones said. “If we stay together and build this bond as brothers, nothing can stop us. We’ll be strong in the end and it will definitely be seen on game night.”

Baseball team loses at districts, looks to regionals

The baseball team lost its district championship game to North Broward Prep on May 3, 9-4. Despite the loss, the team continued on to the regional quarterfinal game on May 8 against Lincoln Park.

Key players at the district final included senior Ryan Hiott, who scored one run and had two hits, and sophomore Riley Skeen, who drove in two runs with a double.

Balls secured

With a four-star rating on GreatSchools.org, this school has always been seen as one of the best in the district, nay the country. No school on Fridays, having to go to math only twice a week and some of the best students in the state! However, is the school really as much of a safe haven as it’s said to be?

On April 25, a whole bag of dodgeballs was stolen from the gym, and this terrible act of rebellion has many students questioning how safe the school really is. If someone can steal these balls and feel no remorse, is nothing sacred?

“It’s really scary to me that something like this can happen

in our school,” sophomore Hayley Charlebois said. “If the balls can be stolen that easily, what’s stopping my phone or my wallet from being taken?”

With new safety elements supposedly being implemented all around school, these concerns should be a thing of the past. As security tightens, it’s a travesty that this crime has gone unnoticed. “(The balls) were nowhere to be found,” Coach Judd said. “The first thing I did, I tried to call the FBI, tried to determine a profile on who might’ve secured these balls and held onto them.”

“I was told I was going to have to pay for the balls and the sack because they couldn’t find them,” an anonymous source said. “Luckily they found them RIGHT WHERE WE TOLD THEM THEY WERE!” This disastrous event was ultimately solved when Judd checked the location the framed students had originally told him the balls had been put after practice.

“I jumped for joy. It’s hard to lose balls, and I felt like I was reunited with a long lost sibling,” Judd said.

Senior Janae Walters credits her offseason work for her game play this season. “(I prepared by) practicing my technique over the summer, eating healthy and working out,” Walters said. “The team will excel. We’ve come a long way and they’re only going to get better.”

The girls lacrosse team finished the season with a record of 3-3. Freshman Erin Wheaton led the team with eight goals.

“The season was very very fun and exciting,” sophomore Luanna De Melo said. “Even though it was our first year, we

learned so much and played very well as a team.”

Senior Anthony Gocinski led the boys lacrosse team (2-5) with nine goals.

“I’m happy how the season came out for it being the team’s first year ever playing lacrosse,” sophomore Michael Raszka said. “We are going to need more people to come out next year since most of the team this year were seniors.”
