THE PROPOSAL


Inspired by Russian constructivist works of Iakov Chernikhov, 3TCP explores the notions of form by addition and subtracWLRQ RI VKDSH 5Hร HFWLQJ WKH VXUURXQGLQJ HQYLURQPHQW LQ PDWHULDOLW\ YLD PDVVLQJ RI PHWDO SDQHOV DQG JODVV PDWHULDOV to the exterior of the theatre the structure is a beacon and celebrates the vibrant and bold nature of drama and the SHUIRUPLQJ DUWV 7ZR JLDQW YRLGV DUH H[SHULHQFHG FDVFDGLQJ GRZQ LQWR WKH KHDUW RI WKH WKHDWUH LQ WKH HQWU\ IR\HU whilst the pure modern form is expressed in the bold horizonWDO DQG YHUWLFDO ร QV HOHPHQWV 6HW EDFN IURP WKH VWUHHW SURYLGLQJ D SXEOLF FRQJUHJDWLRQ space before entry between the massive feature columns to the Bourke street faรงade and leads in the foyer. I was DOVR LQVSLUHG E\ FUHDWLQJ DQ DWPRVSKHUH WKDW UHร HFWHG LQZDUGV HQFRXUDJLQJ SHRSOH WR ORRN XS WKH YRLG VSDFH and into the sky above. The stairs and vertical circulation is articulated with colour to the interior. Both theatres are ORFDWHG EHQHDWK JURXQG OHYHO RQ %DVHPHQW DQG %DVHPHQW OHYHO KRXVHV WKH EDFN RI KRXVH DQG GUHVVLQJ URRPV under the rake to the main theatre. The basement level also compromises of the Blackbox and lower basement foyer IHDWXULQJ D ZDWHU IHDWXUH ZKLFK UHร HFWV D PHWDOOLF VKHHW %DVHPHQW KDV WKH WKH PDLQ WKHDWUH DQG ODUJHVW IR\HU DQG FDQ DFFRPPRGDWH XS 72 SHRSOH IHDWXULQJ H[WHQVLYH ULEEHG HOHPHQWV ZKLFK ร RDW RQ WKH FHLOLQJ FUHDWLQJ D moody ambient atmosphere. Both the cinema and restaurant/rooftop are accesses via WKH JURXQG ร RRU KHQFH ZKHQ WKHDWUH SHUIRUPDQFHV DUH QRW EHLQJ KHOG WKH EDVHPHQW OHYHOV FDQ EH EORFNHG RII DQG WKH DERYH JURXQG VSDFHV ZLOO EH XWLOL]HG (QWHULQJ WKH FLQHPD LV DOPRVW OLNH HQWHULQJ DQ XQGHUZDWHU ZRUOG EOXH VXHGH SDGGHG ZDOOV ZLWK FRUDO SDWWHUQV WR WKH VHDWLQJ When the curtain raises to unveil the screen it becomes an DEVWUDFW DUW SLHFH ZKLFK IROGV XS RQWR WKH FHLOLQJ RYHU WKH DXGLHQFH DQG UHร HFWV QRWLRQV RI D YHLO RU VXUIDFH WKDW WKH viewers are now encased in. The restaurant, on the other KDQG LV D GUDPDWLF JHVWXUH WR WKH FRUQHU RI WKH VLWH DQG LV KLJKOLJKWHG E\ WKH JLDQW ร Q ZKLFK SXQFWXUHV WKH VSDFH DQG WKH HPHUDOG JUHHQ JODVV SRGV WR WKH H[WHULRU ZKLFK LQWHUQDOO\ DFW DV LQIRUPDO GLQLQJ ORXQJLQJ ERRWKV 7KH URRIWRS EDU extends to the perimeter of the restaurant volume below and provides a relaxed atmosphere for visitors to have a drink and talk. The bar on the rooftop is covered by feature EHDPV H[SRVHG RQ WKH H[WHULRU SURYLGLQJ VKHOWHU WR WKH URRI area.
