Drew Thompson Biography: Growing up in the vibrant city of Cleveland, I was surrounded by the rich history and culture that’s shaped the person I am today. As the son of a research professor at Case Western Reserve University, I spent my childhood exploring the historic buildings on campus, igniting my passion for architecture and urban design.

Returning to Case Western as a student after 15 years, I was struck by the layers of history and change that I observed in the urban landscape. This experience has deeply influenced my studies and my approach to architecture. I am currently finishing my Master’s degree in Architecture at Kent State University CAED. The opportunity to study and work in my hometown has been an incredible privilege and has allowed me to connect my personal experiences and passion for this city with my academic pursuits.

Design Philosophy: At the core of my design philosophy is the belief that architecture has the power to connect and empower people.

Past purely the construction of buildings, architecture is about shaping places that engage with their surroundings and foster a sense of relation and personal identity. As a result, my design approach is inherently urban. Throughout my early career, I’ve been drawn to projects that exemplify these three core themes: connectivity, identity, and placemaking.

They represent the foundation upon which I hope to continue building my career. I see every new project as an opportunity to push the boundaries and create something truly special.

Azure Tower

Fall 2023 | Kent State CUDC | David Craun The dynamic potential of the Scranton Peninsula remains largely untapped, presenting as a blank canvas for urban intervention.

Azure tower suggests a transformative intervention to unite the east and west banks. Serving as a bridge between the downtown bluffs on the east bank and the flat riverside on the west, this urban intervention creates a powerful visual terminus for the new Bedrock development. It seeks to conceptually reshape the dichotomy between the east and west sides of the city through the relationship with the river that divides them.

Highlighting pedestrian oriented accessibility, Azure Tower wraps the embankment with a dynamic esplanade. Stretching over the central massing, the green roof connects the esplanade to the interior creating varied movement modalities through the site.

Leveraging existing infrastructure, the design prioritizes outer bounds for primary vehicular and cycling communication. This project aims to pave the way for a more inclusive and harmonious future for Cleveland.

Wynwood Commons

Spring 2023 | Kent State CUDC | Prof. Greg Stroh Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood operates as an avant garde art district with a distinct cultural legacy centered around graffiti art, Latin-American cuisine, and contemporary fashion.

Recent urban development waves have ushered in a new era, juxtaposing the landscape with sleek high-rise structures amid the sprawling industrial-chic backdrop. As the district’s popularity soars and its community expands at a rapid clip, a pressing need emerges—a focal point to anchor the heart of Wynwood. Enter “Wynwood Commons,” a visionary intervention poised to meet the multifaceted demands of this thriving district.

Given the communal essence of the program, it was imperative to forge a space that seamlessly integrates into the public sphere while serving as an unmistakable epicenter of Wynwood. Permeability through the site and its relationship through the streetfront were compelling design considerations. The multi-functional space integrates public amenities such as art galleries, markets, dining, and shopping. The ground level unfolds with a deconstructed entry sequence, guiding visitors through unique journeys to a central courtyard.

Architecturally, two L-shaped structures with distinct identities are elevated above the street, bridged by a mezzanine creating a pedestrian thoroughfare. Miesian-inspired steel frames and X-braced frameworks tectonically define the masses, connected by a network of slender wires offering curated views. “Wynwood Commons” promises to captivate and celebrate this unique cultural enclave, becoming an iconic landmark for Miami’s ever-evolving urban landscape.

Ashbury Apartments Microhouse Prototype

Winter 2018 | SA Group Architects | Daniel J. Sirk The demand for affordable housing in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland has rapidly increased as of late due to its proximity to important societal infrastructure. Students at Case Western, doctors at the Veterans Affairs hospital, or even young professionals working downtown are drawn to the area not only for their work, but for the nightlife & culture of the adjoining University Circle & Little Italy districts. However, despite outstanding location, the lack of open sites and entrenched single family zoning has slowed development to a snail’s pace.

To address restricting site constraints the microhouse unit was developed as a deployable strategy. In the 1st iteration, a piece of land previously underutilized due to its thin profile was able to fit 8 total units. The building helps create a more cohesive street front and address the lack of housing and low density in the area.

Photography Through the lens of my camera, I’ve fostered a strong connection between photography and my appreciation for architecture. The act of capturing the intricate details, play of light, and unique perspectives has not only deepened my understanding of architecture but also heightened my awareness of the beauty embedded in the built environment, transforming the way I perceive the world around me.

A seemingly innocuous photo captures the surreal act of architectural intervention in Warsaw’s Jewish ghetto. This image subtly encapsulates the complex interplay between history and contemporary transformation, inviting contemplation on the nuanced layers of urban evolution within the poignant backdrop of the ghetto’s urban remnants.
