Sustainable Barn Renovation - Levi’s Corporate Office - ICA Culinary Academy and Restaurant

My name is Austin Evans and I am a passionate, driven, individual currently pursuing my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture at Endicott College.

Endicott College’s CIDA accredited, rigorous program ensures students become exceptional designers by assigning real world design projects starting the very first semester.

As a goal-oriented individual, I am always looking to ask questions, receive feedback, and learn more with every given opportunity. I firmly believe in the idea that my job as a designer is to ensure the comfort, welfare and safety of all clients in any given space. All designs must be aesthetically pleasing, yet functional, push pre-existing boundaries and ideas, yet respect predetermined constraints.

Each day I strive to further advance my professional career and prepare the best I can to be a positive representation of the next generation of interior designers.

Project Likes and Challenges

This project provided an opportunity to design in accordance with a provided brand. I really enjoyed being given a brand and a logo and being tasked with creating a design that represents that brand well. A major challenge that arose was fitting all the requirements within the provided 165 square feet.

Self Discoveries

It was through this project I began to truly discover and embrace my love for 3D rendering. Other parts of the design process were taken on by my partner giving me the time to push and challenge myself to provide incredibly accurate and aesthetically pleasing renderings

Project Description

Cambridge, Massachusetts

Your client is a healthcare organization who is currently designing a new, stateof-the-art building. Your clients have requested that your design solutions be supported by evidence-based research for healthcare. The interior environment should foster opportunities for healing, reflection, independence, and a meaningful quality of life for all of its users.

Concept: Triskel Symbol

The Triskele is an ancient Celtic symbol representing progress, strength, and personal growth. This design must incorporate these same values, creating a positive, uplifting environment for those enduring the cancer diagnoses and treatment process.

Project Likes and Challenges

This project was the largest project I have ever completed. Something I really enjoyed about this projects was the opportunity to use evidence based design. A second part of the project I really enjoyed was the amount of freedom we had to design the space. A major challenge of this project was making sure all necessary programming elements were accounted for, as there were many.

Self Discoveries

Through this project I discovered I really enjoy biophilic design. Through this project I completed extensive research on biophilia and the positive effects it has on the body and mind, and how designers can effectively use biophilic design in projects.

Incubator Retail is the newest trend in brick and mortar. Somewhere between pop-ups and permanent stores, incubator spaces are the latest test labs for digitally native and emerging brands to explore the brick-andmortar retail realm. You have been hired by a “client” who owns a successful Etsy shop. They want to test their e commerce success in an incubation retail setting.

With countless lines, shapes and forms all making up the bow tie, it is an appropriate driving factor for this project. By deconstructing the bow tie, and pairing it with clever branding and detailed retail design research a successful retail shop will be created.

Project Likes and Challenges

To date, this project is still one of my proudest works. I took my concept of a bow tie and diligently ran with it. I was challenged to ensure my concept is represented in all aspects of the design and I feel as though I succeeded. Something that was challenging was ensuring I had reasoning behind every single design choice.

Self Discoveries

Through this project I discovered a love for branding. Designing a space in accordance to an established brand is such an exciting task that presents so many different design challenges and forces the designer to think incredibly creatively. I discovered my designs thrive under those circumstances and challenges.

05 - Sustainable Barn

Renovation

Project Description

Norwich, Vermont

Your client has decided to renovate an old horse barn from 1843 into a sustainable and spatially efficient home for themselves and their 6 year old child. As a single parent looking to downsize and foster a better connection with nature, your client will look to universal design, biophilia, and biomimicry as design guidance. The design must be flexible to support both the parent and the child in a small space. Consideration for multi-use areas will be important and an area for design innovation.

Concept: River

A river embodies a wide variety of natural characteristics, from the flow of the water, to the occasional down tree on the riverbank. biophilic design incorporates many of those similar characteristics including wood, greenery and stone. Just as a river feels as it has always been a part of the natural landscape, it is important to design the home in a way that makes the occupants feel as though the home was always there.

05 - Sustainable Barn Renovation

Project Likes and Challenges

The Sustainable Barn Renovation project provided the opportunity for residential design on a larger scale. I enjoyed how the kitchen could be and the general fresh start of a blank floor plan. Something that was challenging however was creating a plan where the walls logically tied into the existing post and beam structure.

Self Discoveries

This project provided a taste of a larger scale design project. It was through this project that I began to find interest in larger design and became eager to explore sectors of design such as retail and workplace, where more square footage is available.

Project Description

Cambridge, Massachusetts

For this project, students will design a new satellite corporate headquarters of an established company. This should be an adaptable space that will accommodate the program elements but also be flexible enough to allow for easy reconfiguration when needed. It should reflect the companies branding, mission statements and organization while also responding to unique working styles on the multigeneration workplace.

Concept: Penny

Levi’s is committed to creating fashionable, sustainable apparel while holding true to their companies values and history. This space shall be designed using the concept of a penny which contains strong American historical aspects, has an industrial aesthetic and closely represents Levis famed addition to the jean, the rivet.

Project Likes and Challenges

This project opened a door on a new sector of design. I enjoyed having to complete research on the various user groups that may be working in this workplace, and design accordingly. A challenge encountered in this project was the size. At the time this was the most square footage and most dense project program to date. The projects space planning stage involved an abundance of creative thinking and more hours than ever before.

Self Discoveries

Through this project I discovered that I found great interest in research and evidence based design. I found it incredibly fascinating how by designing, or not designing, according to prior research and studies, your space will have a positive or negative impact on the productiveness of users in the space.

Academy and Restaurant

Project Description

New York, New York

Your client, a famous chef of your choice, has leased two floors in your project. They seek a dining area for 150 patrons, bar + bar zone seating 30 patrons, as well as a culinary school fit for approximately 30 students. You will base your design on your Chef!

Forms throughout the plan represent the shape of an airplane wing and the flight paths traveled.

Materials throughout the space were carefully selected with stain resistance and washable properties in mind.

To offset the hard materials in the space, wood and other sound absorbing materials are selected to ensure a suitable noise level.

Different design selections, representing different corners of the world ensure the concept is carried throughout the project.

ICA expects thousands of patrons and students walking through their doors each week. All materials selected are required to be durable enough to withstand that volume.

Concept: Airplane

Using the concept of an airplane an upscale dining establishment that transports patrons through the making and serving of globally inspired recipes will be created.

Patron pathways are a top priority. A guests path of travel through the space must be incredibly functional, aesthetically pleasing and unobstructed.

Project Likes and Challenges

This project provided a unique task of combining hospitality and educational design sectors. I truly enjoyed being able to creatively and seamless intertwine the two. While I did enjoy combining the two, it also was the biggest challenge of the project. Because I chose to separate the sectors by floor, I had to be diligent in connecting the two levels through concept and other design features.

Self Discoveries

I never expected to enjoy restaurant design as much as I did. Designing a restaurant requires a well thought out plan to balance branding and design. I personally really enjoy incorporating branding into projects. While starting from scratch has it’s own benefits having a pre determined brand to design for is a diverting task.
