WE SPLIT THE BUILDING BASED OFF OF ITS PROGRAM. THE BARN AND BARN OPERATIONS ARE GROUPED, WHILE PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND GENERAL OPERATIONS ARE SEPARATE.

ONE OF THE WAYS WE FOCUSED ON THE FLOW OF OUR BUILDING WAS THROUGH PUBLIC CIRCULATION. OUR PUBLIC CIRCULATION FOLLOWS THE MILK PROCESS, IN THREE DIFFERENT STEPS: LACTATING, FOOD PROCESSING AND MILK PROCESSING.

AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR CONCEPT IS VIEWS. WITH THIS CONCEPT WE FOCUSED ON THE AREAS OF THE BUILDING THAT NEED TO BE SEEN FROM THE PUBLIC. FOCUSING BOTH ON ARIEL VIEWS AND SIDE VIEWS OF THE MILK PROCESS

THE FORM OF OUR BUILDING CAME FROM OUR DIFFERENT CONCEPTS AND LAYING OUT THE PROGRAM IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THEM. WE THEN USED OUR ROOF AS A MEMBRANE TO SPAN ACROSS OUR BUILDING TO MAKE IT APPEAR UNIFIED AS ONE FORM INSTEAD OF THREE.

OUR FACADE CONSISTS OF A RUSTED CORTEN STEEL AND GLASS. A MAIN FOCUS OF OUR FACADE WAS TO SHOW EXTERIOR VIEWS INTO CERTAIN SPACES THAT WE WANTED THE PUBLIC TO HAVE A GLIMPSE OF. SOME OF THESE VIEWS CONSISTED OF THE BARN, SOME OF THE PUBLIC SPACES, INCLUDING THE CATWALK AND MAIN STAIR. THESE DIFFERENT VIEWS ARE PLACED ON EVERY SIDE OF THE BUILDING.

DESIGNING PROPER ACCESS POINTS FOR STAFF AND VISITORS WAS AN IMPORTANT GOAL WE ACHIEVED IN OUR DESIGN. MAKING SURE THERE WERE EFFICIENT ACCESS POINTS FOR STAFF AND MAINTENANCE, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING ACCESS AND PARKING TO THE PUBLIC NEAR THE MAIN ENTRY.

The issue of where the food we eat comes from, and how it gets produced is one that has significant cultural, social, economic, and environmental implications. This project examined the role of the built environment in agricultural production and explored how to aid in the communication and measurement of public perceptions surrounding the production of food. With a variety of industry and academic stakeholders, programming proposals, design concepts, and design vision studies were put together for STAGE: A Small Technology-Based AnimalFocused Green Center for Engagement – Ensuring Socially, Environmentally, And Economically Sustainable Dairy.

Exuberance: the quality of being full of energy, excitement, and cheerfulness

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies switched to a remote model to continue work without the risk of spreading the virus. A lot of companies even opted to keep this model or incorporate a hybrid model after, and have not needed as much office space anymore.

In result, they downsized, resulting in emptier buildings in big cities, and not as many people choosing to live there as well. Many empty buildings remain and the urban centers that once were seen as bustling, are now barren. With the housing crisis currently plaguing the United States, one solution is turning them into residential developments. Creating homes for people right inside these urban cores will assist in bringing people back to the city and will revive the life that these big cities once had.

A group of people that are already at a disadvantage for housing and that hardly have urban housing target them, is low-income families. People of lowincome status often have little choice when choosing somewhere to live and have to prioritize the necessities, mostly having to look the other way of things they may want but not necessarily need.

The homes they end up choosing are typically low quality and not really customizable. This design proposal will provide an affordable housing solution in an urban setting for such underprivileged families.

With the lack of multifamily housing that caters to the needs of a family, this this proposal will create somewhere that is not only safe and family-focused, but somewhere that these families can truly call home, as this is extremely important. Families need an enriching and safe place where they can grow, learn, and spend time together, and this proposal will do just that.

Being exposed to nature not only has physical health benefits, but mental health benefits as well, especially with children. It expands their creative and imaginative possibilities and allows them to discover new things about the world and nature.

In recent years, children have been spending less time outdoors and more time inside on screens.

In result, there has been a decline in mental and physical health, which are most important during adolescent years. This has created a unique opportunity for designers to incorperate nature, promoting the benefits it fosters. Integrating nature once again is the first step to environmental advocacy.

Blending outdoors with indoors can help fight that divide and bring nature back into the lives of children. Today’s youth have grown up watching their parents accept nature slowly being destroyed, and bringing nature back into their lives can spark the movement where people start caring about the outdoors again. They will stand up together, regardless of background, and defend the natural environment when they get older.

Stepping through the doors of what was once a slaughterhouse, natural and holistic themes encapsulate the user, contrasting with the building’s history. The bright environment and calming materials draw the user in and welcome them with open arms.

The building creates a specific experience, dictated by the individual. There is a specific progression of spaces and experiences, and the layout encourages a circulation path that emphasizes the intended path.

Reflecting Roman bath house culture, the process takes the user on a journey, and very intentionally puts a heavier focus on certain parts along the way.

With a lap pool, small personal yoga or workout spaces, saunas, cold baths, and hot baths, there are many options for the user depending on the experience they are wanting to get. The circulation is also circuatous to create a cleansing expereince for the users, resetting them to where they began.
