Institutional Background MOUNT MARTY COLLEGE IS A CATHOLIC, BENEDICTINE, coeducational institution of higher learning founded in 1936 by the Sisters of Saint Benedict of Yankton, South Dakota. The College functioned as a junior college for women for fifteen years, and in 1951 awarded its first Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. In 1969 the College became coeducational. Associate of Arts degree programs were introduced in 1975 in areas compatible with already existing programs.

Graduate study began with the first Master of Science degree awarded in 1983 and the first Master of Arts degree awarded in 1999.

In keeping with the Benedictine tradition, the College exists as a community of learners. Primary emphasis is placed on the development of each person as a complete human being with intellectual competence, professional and personal skills, and a composite of moral, spiritual, and social values.

The mission of the College is renewed year by year within the framework of Benedictine tradition, the teachings of the Catholic Church, the goals of American higher education, and the educational needs of men and women of the region.

Mount Marty College determines its general policies and objectives in the context of its original charter, historical development, educational needs of the region, and the professional goals of the entire College staff.

The Benedictine community of the Sacred Heart Monastery serves as the sponsoring agent of the College, and the Board of Trustees serves as the final governing board for the institution itself.

In a recent issue of U.S. News and World Report, MMC’s Nurse Anesthesia graduate program was ranked #32 out of 100 of the top colleges and universities that offer nurse anesthesia training. U.S. News and World Report also named Mount Marty College as one of the “Best Colleges” in the Midwest.

Institutional Foundation THE BENEDICTINE SISTERS OF THE SACRED HEART MONASTERY share their gift of seeking God through prayer, work, study, and community life. Located adjacent to the campus of Mount Marty College, the Monastery serves as the home for a community of nearly one hundred Benedictine women who work, pray, play, and celebrate together.

The Yankton Benedictines sponsor two major ministries: Mount Marty College and Avera Health. Student Services and Enrollment STUDENT COUNSELING CENTER The Counseling Center provides support and guidance to students through individual counseling, assessment, referrals, education on mental health issues, consultation and outreach efforts on campus. Athletic memberships include the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) at the Division II level and the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), a group of 12 faith-based, private institutions in South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa.

Institutional Governance and Leadership INTERIM PRESIDENT Interim President Dr. Tom Lorang is the retired superintendent for the Sioux Falls Catholic School System. A native of Hartford, South Dakota, he started his early career in Yankton as a guidance counselor and coach.

After serving 12 years there, he took a position at O’Gorman Catholic High School in 1978. In 1979, Lorang, a vice principal at the time, was chosen as O’Gorman’s first lay principal, and in 1991 was named the superintendent of the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. He served in that capacity for 23 years.

He graduated in 1966 with bachelor’s degrees in history and English from Dakota State College, received a master’s degree in guidance counseling from the University of South Dakota in 1969, an education specialist degree in education psychology from the University of South Dakota in 1979, and a doctorate degree in administration from the University of South Dakota in 1987. The model with which he has structured the Sioux Falls Catholic School System is one of the nation’s most studied Catholic school models.

Responsibilities of the President APPOINTED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, the president serves as the chief executive officer of the College and is the direct executive representative to the Board of Trustees with regard to the management of the College. The next president of Mount Marty College will take the helm of an educational institution that has carved out a unique identity for itself in the Midwest region as a place where students can explore their beliefs and share their faith. The president will have the opportunity to advance the College’s mission by continuing the implementation of a well-developed strategic plan, which focuses on four key areas: institutional development, community relationships, strategic and visionary leadership, and enrollment growth.

The position requires an accessible and collaborative style, coupled with a keen ability to articulate the College’s mission and academic offerings to prospective students and parents, alumni, the community, and accrediting bodies. Evidence of strong fiscal/budget management, fundraising, strategic planning, and relationship-building skills, as well as an understanding of institutional advancement and experience working effectively with governing boards will be essential.

The president will be expected to increase the College’s financial profile through fund-raising, strategic enrollment growth, and resource management while ensuring the optimization of Mount Marty College’s regional visibility and growth. Dr. Tom Lorang, serving as the interim president, is establishing a strong foundation from which the new president can move the institution forward. The fact remains, however, that the institution is very dependent upon tuition revenue.

The next president will be charged to maintain a balanced budget while managing measured growth and improving retention. Institutional priorities must be clearly articulated; communication between the president, Board of Trustees, and campus community must remain open and transparent; and institutional spending must be closely controlled and monitored. Meeting enrollment targets for incoming students and achieving optimal retention rates are critically important, as is leading a comprehensive advancement program for the College. Reigniting the focus for a capital campaign, strengthening fundraising and alumni engagement, and making the case for the donor will be key to helping the College move forward.
