MÜLSTEIN MUSIC ACADEMY

master thesis

High above the steep vineyards of Rüdesheim near the Rhine, the Ehrenfels Castle Ruins stand as a landmark at the entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage Site «Upper Middle Rhine Valley.» Since its construction around the year 1200, the castle has played a significant role in art, music, and poetry.

At this historic site, a music academy will be established, inspired by the

former duty village below the castle. It will provide musicians with a space to rehearse and perform together as a community. At the same time, the castle ruins will be revitalized as a venue for cultural events.

The Mühlstein Music Academy bridges past and present, breathing new life into this historic setting.

A PLACE OF MUSIC AND MYSTICISM

open air castle ruins

Every room of the academy opens up to views of the surrounding Middle Rhine Valley. The bond between the academy and the ruins is ever-present, reflected in its rugged, rock-like surfaces both indoors and outdoors.

Humbly positioned beneath the ruins, the new academy sits at the foot of the vineyard slope. The heart of the academy village offers a direct view of the ruins, the highest authority atop the vineyard. It is also visible from within the academy‘s interior spaces.

REVIVING STATIONS

möglingen

The city of Ludwigsburg, a small town near Stuttgart, is planning to expand the surrounding regional transport network. As part of this initiative, a new train stop is being built in Möglingen. The existing tracks and the historic train station will be reactivated and developed into a modern, spacious stop.

The area around the station will be transformed into the town’s green center and a vibrant event hub due to the lack of recreational spaces.

The new station will serve as an efficient key point connecting car, bicycle, and train traffic.

The charm of the old train station is preserved and transformed into a regional café with a new event hall. The new station is directly connected to the red express bike path and can be easily accessed. Additional building volumes create a versatile open-air space.

A color concept serves as a guiding system and blends with translucent structures, which act as luminous landmarks shaping the area.

LE BÉGUINAGE

bachelor thesis

Nowadays, the housing shortage is becoming increasingly severe. The densification of cities by adding additional floors to existing buildings is the best solution to maintain urban quality of life. The design of the beguine village - an ancient housing form for women - on an existing barracks site in Karlsruhe, Germany

creates living space for both a traditional and a new way of living.

The women‘s community traces its origins back to the 12th century and is being further developed as a communal, intergenerational way of life.

The addition is constructed as a lightweight structure on the existing framework and offers spaces for community and retreat. Different types of apartments allow for various living arrangements.

PAVILLON OF SCULPTURES

KREFELD

At the harbor head of Krefeld, Germany there are listed former warehouse buildings that are a landmark of the city. The artificial land spit was created around 1900 to connect the velvet and silk production to the European water trade route. The historic buildings are being renovated and

restored to their original appearance. A simple new building on the water complements the ensemble, extending one floor above the quay wall.

This extension creates an attractive public space and invites residents to linger.

A SHIP TIES UP

The extension building docks to the quay walls and preserves the striking presence of the wedge-shaped old building over the square. The old building houses the conference center, while the new building serves as a theater house and includes two playable halls.

PAVILION OF SCULPTURES

STUTTGART

The greened exhibition pavilion of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart forms a symbiosis with Stuttgart‘s Rosensteinpark, creating a place for art in the midst of nature. The building is located at the edge of the park, along the sightline to Killesberg.

A greened curtain surrounding the pavilion filters the surroundings and weaves the building into the park.

A diffuse and magical threshold space is created in the park.

VISIBLE INVISIBLE

The two-story museum features two offset blocks on the ground floor, with the upper floor floating above and covering the entrances. Visitors enter through the greened facade, walk past sculptures in a water basin, and ascend a sculptural staircase to the main exhibition, which concludes at the café.
