Roof Garden

Roof monitors will provide the high exit for the stack ventilation system of the building

Roof Garden serves as an adjacent space to the climatology labs on campus, serving as a local area for both survey and study

Terraces with operable sliding doors provide the space with an input for natural ventilation

Mechanical

Wastewater and rainwater are transported separately through the structural cores. rainwater is stored in the mechanical rooms and will later be used for the flushing of toilets within the building

LINA

LINA is a work station nightstand that provides an ambient feel to any space while also being a usable piece of furniture to maintain Spirulina production that can be harvested every morning and reproduces to create daily nutrients.

Other projects

Other mediums like graphic design, physical fabrication, and tufting to gain inspiration of material and a creative release that is essential to my routine.

3D Printed ‘Glitch’ Skateboard

A manipulation of the typical skateboard and re-imagining it as a glitch in the way we think about the objects we think we know. This was 3D printed in many parts and compiled to create a functioning skateboard.

Museum of Modern Art Model Fall 2019

How different materials and use of light create experiential qualities that are difficult to imagine in the digital space.

Ryan Lew Selected Works 40

Ramen shop model

Spring 2019

Using traditional techniques to design a modern ramen shop that has memorable features and use model materiality, diffuse light, and attention to craft to express notions of warmth and serenity.

Ryan Lew Selected Works 41

Abstraction

My architectural mindset designed and built over the course of a day. The interwoven nature of disciplines, ideas, and skills to create a cohesive piece. Each piece reliant on one another for stability and continuity.

Ryan Lew Selected Works 42

dissimulation

A formal exercise to imagine the spaces created by the boolean intersections and additions of geometry. As well as a play of transparent and opaque to create visual interest.

Ryan Lew Selected Works 43

Solar Analysis Script

A custom grasshopper script that uses ladybug and various tools to map a surface based on a time and location with a variety of variables such as wind, temperature, sun exposure and more and optimizing the building based on the desires of client or climate

Optical Illusion Luminaire

The goal was to make a simple rectangular prism light feel organic and twist without changing the overall shape. Undulation in the individual fins creates a visual feeling of twisting while maintaining the same profile for the entirety of the height.

Scenario Optimization

Using grasshopper to create parameters to establish the most optimal location of any object. Can be an additive process, subtractive, punching, pulling, etc. to provide the most ideal design based on constraints. I began with basic primitive shapes and using formulas, calculated the most optimal location for exposed surface area while staying within a certain designated volume. Running hundreds of simulations, computationally finding optimal location and scale.

Graphic design

Digital media as a way to represent ideas and create exposure for experiences that occur in the physical world.

LA Metro Poster

A poster designed as promotional and information graphic for the LA Metro Program, including Architecture firms involved and guest lecturers.

tufting

The art of rug making is a labor of love and attention to detail in order to depict ideas in an unusual medium of yarn and fabric that allows the ground plane to be a canvas and area of greater exploration. By doing this in my own home I am able to have a create escape while also making a spatial study to implement in my design thinking.

I am a fifth year at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo majoring in architecture. Working in leadership roles with clubs like AIAS and NOMAS has taught me the value of every body’s individual experiences and how all these can come together to create a stronger team than each individual alone and allowed me to discover my desire to propel this profession forward. I am obsessed with constantly learning new things, and minoring in Sustainable Environments as well as Architectural Engineering has given me opportunities to think about buildings holistically instead of purely aesthetic pieces of art, but also acknowledging the place and the process. I want to make the best of every situation and be part of a collaborative environment that values teamwork, learning, and inventing.
