PROTECT OUR WINTERS EUROPE IMPACT REPORT 2022
We are excited to present our 2022 impact report, showcasing the strides made by Protect Our Winters Europe (POW Europe) towards safeguarding the people and places we love from the impacts of climate change.
Together, we celebrated collective wins, with Alliance Ambassadors excelling at the Winter Olympic Games whilst advocating for climate action. We hosted the first-ever European athlete trainings, empowering over fifty athletes as climate advocates. Our Annual Leadership Summit and online POWer hour sessions furthered knowledge exchange.
The inaugural European POW Mobility Week engaged 20+ partners, tracked 20,000 sustainable kilometres, and ignited impactful content on sustainable travel. We partnered with leading outdoor industry companies, garnering hundreds of COP27 signatories urging bold action.
Welcoming new volunteers and staff, we joined the European Network for Outdoor Sports. EU funding supported our Erasmus+ project Zero Emission Rides with the World Snowboard Federation. We successfully applied for a grant to engage under-represented groups in the outdoor climate movement.
Our passion lies in harnessing our communities love of the outdoors for systemic climate action. There is much more that can and needs be done, but together, we can work towards a sustainable future helping to leave a positive legacy.

We have used 50% of our remaining carbon budget in the last 2 years*
At the end of 2022, POW Europe spearheaded a highly successful campaign within the European Outdoor Industry, urging bold climate policies to address the pressing challenges of climate change. As the industry's customers directly experienced the consequences of global warming, POW Europe recognised the critical importance of a stable climate for the industry's economic future. They also acknowledged the industry's contribution to climate breakdown through operational emissions.
Uniting progressive businesses, POW Europe crafted a powerful open letter to European policymakers attending COP27, demanding support for sustainability initiatives and penalties for harmful practices.
The impact of the campaign was profound, demonstrating the outdoor industries support for progressive climate action to policymakers' during COP27. With collective calls for:
+ Stronger legislation to incentivise sustainable practices
+ Standardisation of carbon emissions measurements
+ Adoption of renewable energy for manufacturing in producer countries
The campaign gathered significant support from industry organisations and influential leaders, such as Burton Snowboards, Icebug, The North Face and Picture Organic Clothing, advocating for radical ambition and strong regulations to accelerate emission reduction.
By rallying the outdoor industry, POW Europe demonstrated the power of collective action in safeguarding natural spaces vital to the industry's existence while contributing to global climate change mitigation. This success story serves as a compelling example of how united efforts can secure a better and more sustainable future for all.

Alba Ortiz (POW Germany) reported live from COP27 in Egypt, with an online talk and discussion to help pass on crucial information from the event.
Emissions from transport are the main contribution to climate change from outdoor activities, and the second largest contribution within the EU. POW Europe highlighted this problem by challenging the outdoor community to travel sustainably every day for a week in March 2022.
The campaign was a dynamic and impactful initiative and brought together individuals, communities, and organisations to raise awareness about the environmental impact of various mobility choices while promoting sustainable alternatives.
Throughout the week engaging events, competitions, and discussions were organised to cultivate a collective understanding of the need for greener transportation solutions.
Participants were encouraged to explore and adopt eco-friendly modes of commuting, such as cycling, walking, carpooling, and public transportation, which significantly reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a healthier planet.
A total of 20,040km were tracked sustainably, roughly the same as travelling halfway around the world, during the week on the Active Giving app. The emissions saved were converted into donations to POW Europe from our brand partners, which raised over €5,000. Hundreds of people shared their travel stories on Instagram, and 20+ brands engaged their communities in sustainable travel for the week.
POW Europe trained The North Face Snow and Trail teams, encouraging them to leverage their voice and influence as athletes to emerge as climate action leaders.
With the support from PA agency Ohana. POW brought together The North Face, Picture, Burton, Icebug and strategist, Adam Hall, to create a working group for political action on climate. Submitting policy asks for COP27 in 2023, the group will next focus on the 2040 EU Climate Target consultation.
This project aims to reduce emissions from snowboarding and raise awareness about climate change. Together, finding solutions to adapt and migrate the climate crisis. With the WSF and ski and snowboard federations across Europe, our unified goal is to create educational tools to raise awareness about climate change.
Our nine national chapters, coming together in one cohesive and coordinated network, are what gives POW in Europe the power and dynamism that European policymakers, partners and other stakeholders are increasingly taking notice of. Each of our chapters has grown this past year, in size, in energy and in our determination to work together to protect the places and lifestyles we love from climate change.

In their ambitious campaign to drive action against climate change in Austria, POW Austria produced four compelling short films, each lasting 10 to 13 minutes. Covering topics such as Mountain Sports Community, Forestry and Agriculture, Winter-tourism, and the Economy, the films aimed to encourage viewers to share their own stories on social media. Despite garnering support from partners, the community, creative professionals, and politicians, the campaign fell short of expectations due to obstacles like the denial of paid advertising on social media platforms and limitations imposed by the algorithms.
To overcome these challenges, POW Austria decided to shift its strategy and showcase the films at live events across Austria, including those scheduled for 2023. This change allowed for direct audience engagement and ensured a wider reach, enhancing the campaign s impact on climate change awareness. By conducting interviews with diverse stakeholders such as athletes, farmers, and CEOs, the films provided a comprehensive perspective on the issue. POW Austria also provided supplementary assets to amplify the films message. Despite initial setbacks, the campaign s new approach holds promise for reaching audiences directly and making a greater impact.

Winter sports and activities require travel, contributing significantly to their emissions and environmental impact. To address this issue, POW Finland launched a project in 2022, supported by funding from The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency TRAFICOM. The initiative aimed to engage stakeholders such as service providers, travel companies, public administrations, and winter sports enthusiasts in promoting sustainability.
At the heart of the project was the #Liikufiksummin campaign, meaning #travelwiser in English, specifically targeting snow sports enthusiasts. Diverse communication materials were developed for various channels and partner organisations, ensuring broad dissemination of the campaign's message. Alongside POW Finland’s own social media platforms, the campaign reached sports venues, service providers, influencers, Protect Our Winters alliances, events, sports clubs, and other individuals and communities associated with POW.
By adopting a multi-channel approach, the #Liikufiksummin campaign achieved wide exposure and engagement. Its objective was to inspire winter sports enthusiasts to make more sustainable travel choices. With the collective effort of all stakeholders, the project sought to reduce the environmental impact of transportation in winter sports and foster a sustainable future. The initiative's ultimate goal was to encourage responsible practices and contribute to a greener winter sports industry.

In 2022, POW Europe launched the notable POW Mobility Week campaign across Europe, which was hugely impactful for POW Norway. This initiative involved partnering with renowned alpine festivals such as X2, High Camp Vatnahalsen in Norway, and the Norwegian Alpine Champions in Narvik. As part of the campaign, athlete Andreas Køhn took over the POW Norway’s Instagram account, sharing his journey from Lofoten to Vatnahalsen and back, highlighting his commitment to a no-fly trip.
The campaign actively encouraged followers to document their own low-carbon trips, fostering a sense of community engagement. Feedback from the audience was sought to understand the factors that would motivate them to choose low-carbon emission transportation over personal vehicles and air travel.
By collaborating with prominent alpine festivals, featuring an inspiring athlete, and engaging the community, the POW Europe Mobility Week campaign aimed to promote and showcase sustainable transportation options. The objective was to encourage individuals to consider alternative modes of travel, reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable future.

© POW NorwayIn a grand campaign called Utelandet, over 3 million outdoor enthusiasts in Sweden were mobilised to take action prior to the 2022 Swedish government election. United under a compelling manifesto, the campaign urged the Government to honour Sweden's commitments to the Paris Agreement and protect the country's stunning wilderness. The manifesto was presented to the four major political parties in office.
Throughout the campaign, a series of impactful events were organised leading up to the manifesto handover by POW Sweden. A remarkable winter climate march and an extensive bike-climate march spanning the entire country were orchestrated. Outdoor climate talks, interviews with renowned climate scientists, and collaborations with climate organisations, businesses, ski resorts, municipalities, and individuals were carried out to emphasise the urgent nature of the climate crisis during the election campaign. The primary objective was to deepen public understanding of the critical situation and hold the government accountable for climate action.

Mikael af Ekenstam © POW SwedenDuring the winter season of 21/22, POW Switzerland launched an impactful mobility campaign featuring the film "TakeTheTrain." The film showcases the ease of travelling by public transport, specifically by train, likening it to putting on a jacket. This collaborative campaign involves eight ski resorts across Switzerland, along with the support of three public transport companies and several other project partners.
To maximise visibility, the film is not only promoted through POW Switzerland’s digital channels but also shared on the destinations' platforms. Additionally, POW Switzerland secured advertising screens on trains for the first time, allowing them to display "TakeTheTrain" posters. This comprehensive approach, in partnership with their 16 collaborators, enables POW Switzerland to effectively address the theme of sustainable travel in the mountains while achieving a wide-reaching impact throughout Switzerland.

Climate change is a global issue that requires international cooperation and collective action. Present in multiple countries, POW can address the diverse challenges and opportunities specific to each region allowing for a broader reach and impact across different geographical areas. This enables POW to engage with local communities, outdoor sports enthusiasts, and individuals passionate about climate action at a grassroots level.
POW has national chapters or affiliated organisations in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and 9 Europe countries. Each country has its unique environmental, social, and political context. Multinational representation facilitates knowledge sharing and collaboration across cultures, political systems, and economic models. It allows for the exchange of best practices, strategies, and experiences in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable practices.
POW is thrilled to collaborate with Swedish outdoor shoe manufacturer, Icebug. Renowned for its ecoconscious practices, Icebug's transition to algae foam, renewable energy adoption, and emission reductions has rendered it Carbon Negative since March 2019. POW and Icebug share a mission to convert nature enthusiasts into climate advocates.
CEO David Ekelund highlights the need for sweeping changes in outdoor industries and underscores Icebug's commitment to becoming climate positive in 2020. David also emphasises the necessity of proper carbon pricing for effective transformation. Icebug not only endorses a $100/ton carbon price but also incorporates it internally, channelling funds into sustainability.
The partnership reflects shared goals: transforming individuals' passion for nature and outdoor activities into advocacy. David and POW share the goal of fostering a culture change towards sustainability and advocating for climate action from unexpected q uarters, such as outdoor athletes and brands.
Reflecting on the latest IPCC report, David finds hope in the message that while the climate emergency is dire, solutions are attainable. In partnership with POW, Icebug's dedication to sustainability and advocacy underscores the potential for positive change even in the face of alarming climate warnings.
This partnership supports our athlete trainings, and in collaboration with VF Foundation our DEI and HCPA programmes, that emphasise climate action and inclusivity.
Before delving into the future, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to three remarkable individuals who are departing from our team: Marita van Oldenborgh and Brita Staal, co-founders of POW Europe three years ago, as well as Sören Ronge, our inaugural European Coordinator. Their unwavering passion, dedication, and commitment have laid the solid foundation for our organisation's growth and future endeavours, recognising that the initial years are typically the most challenging.
POW continues to expand, and we are thrilled to welcome our latest chapter, The Netherlands, into our community.
Since Autumn 2022, our board has seen the appointment of a new President, Alistair Maltby (UK), and a new Vice-President, Megan Anderson (USA). Leveraging their extensive experience as a director at The Woodland Trust and a lawyer at the Regulatory Assistance Project in Brussels, respectively, they bring a wealth of skills and connections to our team. Additionally, POW Europe has named Jonas Schneider (CH) as the new executive director, an accomplished transformational leader and entrepreneur, commencing his role in mid-March 2023.
Now more than ever, our actions hold significance. In a world marked by polarisation, our movement employs a love for nature and outdoor sports to unite and mobilise our community for climate action. Whether athletes or politicians, grass-roots activists or representatives from the outdoor industry, we share a common goal: Employing our skills, energy, networks, and passion to preserve our planet.
Now is not the time to slow down. In the coming year, we intend to support POW athlete Julian Schütter in his plea for increased climate action and transparency from FIS. Collaborating with our chapters in Austria and Germany, we will implement our educational program, HPCA, across eight European countries. Moreover, POW will collaborate with the World Snowboard Federation and the National Snowboard Federations to further develop specific climate educational tools as part of its first Erasmus+ projects. This year will also mark the initiation of POW's first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programme in three distinct countries, spanning from the Alps to Scandinavia. In partnership with Atomic, we eagerly anticipate co-hosting the inaugural Ski Industry Climate Summit, aiming to unite key stakeholders and address climate impacts.
Keen on staying updated? Subscribe to our newsletter, share it with friends and family, follow us on social media, visit our website regularly, or reach out directly if you're interested in engaging further with POW.
We prioritise action over inaction, inclusion over division, and hope and positivity over tension. United, we have the potential to reach summits that were once distant dreams when standing alone.
In February at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Courchevel, POW Germany Ambassador Julian Schütter delivered an open letter to FIS. The letter was signed by over 420 athletes, including some of the industry's biggest names, demanding greater action and transparency on climate.
