A NOTE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

MEMBER-GET-A-MEMBER PROGRAM

Do you know of a retailer whom you think would benefit from IJO membership and become an asset to the group? IJO welcomes recommendations of potential new retail members from both our retail and supplier members. This is your organization, and we find your input very helpful in upholding the strength and integrity of IJO. More than 75% of retailers interested in membership are not eligible, whether due to territory conflicts or credit issues. If you have someone you’d like to recommend, please check with Penny Palmer to verify their eligibility, and then speak with them about IJO. If they become members as a result of your efforts IJO will pay you $2,000. These checks are made out to you, personally - not to your business - so you can use the money for something fun!

Our com mon g oal is to i ncrease the strength of IJO for the better ment of the entire grou p. A wi nwi n for all!

DID YOU KNOW?

Since 1998 IJO members – th more than a half million doll

We began by selecting a cha areas where we hold our conf of ourselves behind. That first year we chose the Make A Wish Foundation and contributed to them in several communities, and it’s grown from there. Just some of the causes include Paws For Patriots, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, First Candle, Jewelers for Veterans and many more. This is cause for great pride and Thank You!!!

SPOTLIGHT ON RETAIL MEMBER:

LARRY RICKERT, JIM KRYSHAK JEWELERS

In 1996, we moved to Wausau, Wisconsin with our 1 ½ year old daughter to become one of four partners in Jim Kryshak Jewelers when Mr. Jim Kryshak was retiring.

We moved away from friends and family for an unknown but embraced the challenge and opportunity. I continued to learn more about our industry, especially IJO education and Team Clinics, plus productive discussions with Suppliers.

In 2003, we built our free-standing store, which was a fun and challenging project. Sales grew as planned, and we became the leading jewelry store in a 50+ mile radius. In 2005 I decided to move 100 miles away from the store to Madison, WI, and let the fine people on staff run the company. A very unusual move with kids heading into 1 and 5 grades! I remained focused on financial management and macro business trends that affected us. In 2007 I became full owner of Jim Kryshak Jewelers, right before the Great Recession.

While not being in the store, I continue being available every day to help solve issues that arise and plan strategies for the future. I’m a Facilitator for a Plexus Performance Group, helping 12 jewelry companies make their business better.

I also consult with jewelry business owners on Succession/Transition planning. I have been Treasurer on the Executive Board of the American Gem Society since 2018 and enjoy helping and giving back to the industry that has become my career and passion.

Today I am proud to announce that Tara Smith, who was hired in 1997 while a high school DECA student and who has been Store Manager since 2013, is now my equal partner in Jim Kryshak Jewelers!

My overall advice to members of IJO is enjoy life and your chosen profession. Always be learning, embrace change and the opportunities that come your way, including difficult choices. Give others responsibility in your business and get out of their way. I am very excited about the future of IJO, and all that IJO has to offer to its members to not only survive, but thrive, in the future.

Larry and his wife Kerry have two grown daughters – Julie in Milwaukee and Emily in Idaho. Emily and her husband Kyle recently blessed them with their first grandchild, Layla. For many years Larry participated in a bike race to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in memory of his mother who passed away in 2001, and his store has supported countless local charitable causes, as well as their local Boys & Girls Club chapter. They are grateful for all the club does to make the Central Wisconsin community a great place to live.

is a significant step forward. Lend your voices where you can.

That said, the challenges are real and require our full attention. Some of the recent changes, most notably the 50% tariff on Indian gems and jewelry (effective August 27, 2025), have driven up costs dramatically. Even sectors that were doing okay are now seeing pressure from rising material and input costs like silver and gold, weaker foreign exchange positions, and uncertainty about what the next round of tariffs or countermeasures might look like.

So where does that leave us and what are we doing about it?

1. Monitoring and flexibility: We are keeping a close eye on policy announcements and trade negotiations so we can anticipate changes, rather than react after the fact.

2. Supply chain optimization: We’re helping to evaluate alternate sourcing strategies, leveraging countries with lower tariff exposure where possible, and helping to align import adjustments for components vs. finished goods.

3. Pricing strategy: There’s a balance to strike and we are having the conversations to help alleviate the pressure; know that our vendor partners are absorbing some cost increases to preserve value for our retailers, while also adjusting prices where necessary so that margins are sustainable for everyone.

4. Partnership & communication: This one is especially important. We’re all part of the same ecosystem from designers and artisans to suppliers, logistics, and retail. If one link gets stretched, it can ripple. Communication is key in sharing data about cost changes, lead times, and inventory levels. Remember we are all in this together.

We’re confident that because we’re paying attention and because we’re committed to doing what needs to be done, together we can navigate this period with agility. The future still looks bright. Stay informed, stay flexible, stay collaborative.

What to Watch Closely Going Forward

1. HTS code‑level details: Not all tariffs are universal; different categories (loose diamonds, gold jewelry, silver, colored gemstones, lab‑grown vs natural) may have different rates. In some cases one finished piece can have multiple HTS imports.

2. Implementation delays or exemptions: Sometimes tariffs announced get delayed, or some categories are exempted after industry feedback. Keep tabs on official published rulings/customs guidance. Use our partner, JVC’s, tariff tracker, found here: https://jvclegal.org/tariff-tracker/

3. Exchange rates & material cost trends: With raw material (gold, silver, gemstone) cost fluctuations, combined with tariffs, small changes in pricing or currency can swing profitability. Make sure that you are aligning your pricing with updated costs!

4. Consumer demand shifts: Monitor sales trends (size, weight, design types) to see if customers are already trading down or shifting preferences. We are already seeing a shift due to economic pressures. Make sure you have collections that are saleable at every price point in your store.

5. Regulatory / compliance burden: Increased paperwork, customs filings, certification (origin, lab certificates) may become more burdensome. Have patience as we work through the delays together. Remember, communication is key!

We are here to help, if you have questions about tariffs or how they are affecting you, please reach out.

TREND REPORT:

HOLIDAY SPARKLE: THIS SEASON’S MUST-HAVE JEWELRY TRENDS

As we step into the most dazzling season of the year, the world of jewelry is bursting with bold color, timeless classics, and exciting trends that are sure to brighten both spirits and outfits. Whether you’re shopping for someone special or treating yourself (we fully support that!), this year ' s styles offer something for everyone.

Reach for pieces with colored stones, they’re your ticket to instant standout style.

MAKE A STATEMENT

Chunky chains, bold cuffs, and layered looks are still going strong. These power pieces can elevate everything from cozy knits to sleek dresses.

METAL MIX UP

Mixed metals are having a moment! Try layering gold, silver, and textured finishes for a fresh, modern twist. Reversible looks are an easy sell (two looks, one piece, heck yeah!).

CL ASSICS THAT ALWAYS SHINE

No collection is complete without the essentials. Gold Huggies (update them with texture or two-tone), pearl studs, and diamond hoops (add an interchangeable drop for extra sparkle!) are timeless go-tos. Perfect for everyday wear and easy to dress up for winter soirées.

SPARKLE YOUR WAY

This season, don’t be afraid to mix the new with the nostalgic. Whether you’re making a bold statement or keeping it classic, the perfect sparkle is out there waiting for you.
