Research Title Problematizing Formation of Catechists: Implications to Catechetical Ministry Abstract: This study describes how various catechetical ministries manage the formation and implementation of catechesis in the Philippines. It problematizes how the catechetical ministry administers catechetical formation programs in the Philippines.

Using the data of the National Catechetical Study (NCS) 2021: Pastoral Action Research and Intervention (PARI) Project, this study analyzes the issues and challenges that catechists experience in the formation program. Using the three dimensions of formation, particularly the being, knowing, and doing dimensions, provided in the 2020 Directory for Catechesis as a conceptual lens, the study argues that, although formation programs of various catechetical ministries incorporate the three dimensions, problems and adversities such as compensation and standardization of formation programs remain a salient factor in the effectiveness of catechesis in the Philippines. The study then found out that catechetical formation programs in the Philippines has a standardized curriculum and pedagogies. The issues and experiences of selected Filipino catechist respondents during their formation program also vary on their respective ecclesiastical locations. The study then suggests producing better performance and implementation of catechetical ministries by fully addressing the needs of their catechists, and by reducing their complications to achieve an effective and more wonderful experience of doing catechesis.

Research Title Vulnerability and Resilience of Filipino Catechists in the Context of Catechetical Formation Programs Abstract: This paper examines the vulnerability and resilience of Filipino catechists in the context of catechetical formation programs amidst the pandemic. Using the data collected from the Studying Catechetical Formation Programs (SCFP) of the National Catechetical Study (NCS) 2021: Pastoral Action Research and Intervention (PARI) project, the paper analyzes the formation experiences of selected Filipino catechists across Ecclesiastical Territories (ETs) in order to contribute to effective catechetical ministry in the country. The study argues that Filipino catechists are simultaneously vulnerable and resilient relative to their catechetical formation experiences. Specifically, the paper directs attention to the following observed indicators namely (a) age (b) gender, (c) formal education, (d) catechetical training, (e) work responsibilities, (f) welfare and wellbeing, (g) ministry support, and (h) COVID-19 pandemic as constitutive of vulnerability and resilience contexts of catechetical formation experiences. These indicators and contexts affirm the observed faith-based service disposition of selected catechist respondents guiding their practice of catechetical ministry. This proposed Catholic service ethic seems to contribute to the persistence of Catholic faith amidst the pandemic.

This is the time where Keith, one of the project assistants of NCS, taught me how to numerize and clean the data. I was thankful enough that I was able to know this basic process in doing research. Indeed, managing and cleaning data (e.g., crosschecking errors) is crucial because it allows it to be more credible and of highquality of analysis. Doing this, I was also able to practice my skill of being focused in the work and careful to the important details.

I have been doing this task for quite some time now. The Formation Tracer Study survey is a research tool conducted by the NCS 2021: PARI Project, which will also be one of the datasets I will use for my thesis paper. They handed me this task to finally grasp the data and then write an analysis for the paper. I did the recent work to analyze a “check all that apply” question using multiple response functions in SPSS. With that, it made the data clearer and easier to study, aside from analyzing it one by one, because it created a table consisting of the variable label in one table. Day by day, I am familiarizing myself with SPSS, and I am developing a skill that will be useful for me soon, especially when doing thesis papers and working with research-related companies in the future.

The formation tracer survey is one of the datasets for my thesis paper and in studying the formation of catechists. I learned how to use SPSS software to analyze the quantitative results. I mainly processed the data using a descriptive statistics analysis.

On August 25-26, 2021, The NCS 2021: PARI Project team executed a workshop meeting about MAXQDA and SPSS. It was supposedly a one-day meeting workshop. However, the time was only limited, so it became a two-day workshop event. The first day started from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, which was about MAXQDA facilitated by Tisha de Vergara, one of the project assistants of doc Yayet. Then the next day, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, was the SPSS workshop facilitated by Keith Joven, who is also one of the project assistants of doc Yayet. Without a doubt, those two workshops were very informative and practical.

They also taught us the logic and meaning behind every function, making it more understandable since doing research is a big deal. I learned several valuable tips and functions from both the MAXQDA and SPSS analytical software from the workshops.

For the MAXQDA, Tisha showed us her data analysis which was fascinating to me.

Her coding analysis was well-organized, and it showed how much time and effort she did all of that. The same goes for Keith with his frequencies and other quantitative data analysis on SPSS. Both of them genuinely did a good job. The fundamental functions taught to us for MAXQDA are the following: (1) smart coding, (2) coding frequencies, and (3) retrieve segments. In order to get familiarize and get used to these, it is necessary to practice and play with the data from time to time.

Since I will be using the same dataset for my thesis that Tisha used, I believe the process would be easy. What I needed to do is play with it and, at the same time, construct interpretations. For the SPSS, it was already simple to me. I already knew the fundamental functions that Keith taught, except for one thing— processing multiple responses. It has been a problem of mine when I was analyzing the SCSQ Laoag and FTST data because I have zero knowledge on how to do it. It was confusing to me. However, it became clear when they taught it during the workshop meeting. I believe it will make the process easier now compared to then. Aside from the learnings I grasped about MAXQDA and SPSS, and I also recognized the value and importance of teamwork. As I have mentioned, research is a big deal. Indeed, it requires a good relationship and collaboration of the team to produce a better research outcome. Overall, the NCS 2021: PARI Project will end soon, and we must work hard to finish it successfully. For my part, I will try to do my best and provide better assistance to the team.

I used mainly the lexical search feature to speed up the process of doing coding analysis, as well as the others, such as the creative coding feature. This was also the part where it challenges my critical and analytical thinking skills. Indeed, it is crucial to be better at being critical and logical in order to deeply understand the scenarios and the information well.

For this particular task, Doc Yayet told me to help him gather literature on Industry 4.0 and Education 5.0 and then encode it into Endnote, a reference library. In all honesty, I have no idea what those two topics are, so I thought it might be difficult to search for those. To my surprise, there are already various research and studies about it. Moreover, when working with Doc Yayet, it is crucial to note the process of file naming documents.

No doubt, it must be clean and organized. Because of that, I made sure that everything is free from errors, same with encoding its information to Endnote.

The next step was to create an overview report, which summarizes all the gathered literature. There are 20 works of literature that I collected, consisting of ten each for the topic. I realized that the process of this particular internship work allowed me to practice and enhance my writing skills, especially in writing the review and related literatures for the thesis. The method of writing a review of related literature requires focus and a deep comprehension to narrate the following works of literature gathered. Aside from that, this task made me learn about the notion of Industry 4.0, also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and Education 5.0, which uses an advanced and technological method for teaching and learning environment.

On Sunday, doc Yayet sent me a message regarding the UST Sociology Online Learning Inquiry survey. He suggests that I will lead in interpreting and presenting that particular survey. With that, I was tasked to create a team. The team must consist of students from either 3SCL or 2SCL interested in working with me on the survey. In all honesty, I was overwhelmed with the work that I have to do, but I still managed to do so. Fortunately, I am still part of a group chat with the USTSS officers, so I sent a message asking if someone from either 3SCL or 2SCL would like to volunteer to work with me for this purpose. I do not have any idea if this work will be part of my internship. However, it seems that it is. Social networking, building connections, and creating social relationships are my weakness. Anything that involves communicating and socializing with other people is what I am not good at and is need more practice and exposure. Nevertheless, I took all the courage in my hands and got over with it, because this is part of the internship process and it would definitely improve my skills and be professional.

UST Sociology Online Learning Inquiry Report

This was one of the first internship tasks I did, and it got me overwhelmed. The following processes I did for formulating the UST Online Learning Inquiry Report are as follows: 1) Analyze the data of results; 2) Formulate the summary report of findings; 3) Present the findings in the Socio General Assembly. Despite how overwhelming it was, I learned a lot throughout the process of doing this particular tasks, and it did help me a lot when it comes to finally writing the results and discussions part of my thesis paper.

As of right now, I am happy that I finished doing the online learning inquiry report and the recorded presentation. From 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the UST Sociology General Assembly for this term was executed. I was one of the presenters who shared the summary findings report of the UST Sociology Online learning Inquiry survey. And I believe that I deserved a pat on the back. It has been a long and busy weekend since I started cramming the report and recorded the presentation. I must say that it was a crazy journey, and I know there is more to come ahead of me. I had many first-time experiences from this internship, and it, no doubt, challenged me— it made me go out of my comfort zone. Without a doubt, it made me do things that I never imagined I could. I never imagined myself presenting on a general assembly with a total of hundred participants, consisting of the students and professors. It was terrifying, even it was just a recorded video. When they played the recording, I was overthinking++

I had many negative thoughts, and I was scared because I did not know what the audience was thinking about in my recorded presentation. Are they proud? Bored? Do they even understand me? Am I presentable enough? And many more unanswered thoughts I could think of that day.

But, despite that, deep inside, I am still filled with joy. The process and journey that lead me to present in the GA was not just a piece of cake. I worked hard and exerted my time and effort for it. Thus, I am proud of myself because I overcome it. I overcome my fears and the hard work I have been through with them, and I cannot wait for what “adventure” and “obstacles” I will face next. This internship program is forming us to become better and professional individuals and strengthen our personal character. It is really about preparing us for the future, in the outside corporate and real world.

This was also one of the first internship tasks that I did, and I would say that I had fun doing this. Although, I admit it was also quite overwhelming and challenging, but I did not feel as if I am exhausted by it. I organized all the sociology students in an excel file and I mostly got their information from the Sociology Inquiry Survey. And, in order for the information to be accurate, I crosschecked every single one of it by communicating with the class presidents of each batch and section. As a shy person, it truly challenged my inner self-confidence to expose myself to others and have better engagements with the students.

KFI Infographics

In the first few weeks of my research internship for the second term of the school year 21-2022, I helped with generating infographics for the KFI chapters. I created one using Visme. I am already familiar with using Visme as an online visual content platform when creating infographics and presentations because I used to assist the research project pre-internship times with it. The difference for this research work is that there were no existing layouts or designs that I will need to follow. I have to be creative and produce my own design of infographics that must look simple yet professional and with logic.

QQ Reports Statistics Encoding

The second major research work that I did was encoding the QQ Reports Statistics about the existing data on Catholic Education nationwide. There were a total of 86 reports, I believe, from different Ecclesiastical territories (ETs) that I encoded and transferred into an Excel file. After which, I crosschecked each other again so that the data is free from any errors.

Proofread of KFI Chapters

From time to time, I also helped with proofreading the KFI on Chapter 6 (focusing on catechetical formation programs) and Chapter 7 (focusing on catechetical human resources). The process of proofreading these two chapters allows me to get familiar with the topic more since it is associated with my thesis manuscript.

The Importance of “Consistency” in Communication Communication is one of the important aspect in doing internship. Always be consistent when it comes to updating tasks and accomplishment to my supervisor. This will lead to discipline and focus.
