DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD has been a part of my life for a little less than a decade now. I remember my friend Analisa Pilecki introduced me to the show when I started showing interest in its author Jason Robert Brown's other works. I have wanted to put this on the stage for the past couple of years. In fact, this was my first pick to direct before my directorial debut with SISTER ACT. Just like SISTER ACT, I was not entirely sure I had it in me to bring this incredible show to life. I gave the Play Selection Committee this show and one other, and I am so incredibly grateful they chose this one. It truly speaks to the crazy times we have lived in over the past year. Every single person watching this show can relate to one song, if not more. I am so proud of this cast and crew. It was pretty nerve-wracking when I sent out the call for audition submissions. I didn't think I was going to get anything, but here come all of these auditions from friends and fellow artists from all over Southern California and Nevada. We rehearsed via Zoom for a month. Then, we came together for one weekend full of hard work, laughs, emotions, and talent to be able to put this together. I know I have told them plenty of times how truly blessed I was to have each and every one of them in this production, but I cannot stress it enough. I love you all so much, and I hope everyone watching this can see how talented you all are. You have made me so proud. Love y'all.

THEATRE 29 CAST HALEY KOOYMAN - An accomplished comedic actress and mime artist, Haley trained at Idyllwild Arts Academy, CALARTS, Kinetic Theory Circus School, and Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre. Haley was a leading actress for four seasons at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center, performing across multiple genres under the watchful eyes of Artistic Director Howard Shangraw, and award-winning Musical Director Nelms McKelvain. In 2018, she conceived of and fully realized two iterations of her bawdy variety show “Lady Haley’s Calamity Cabaret”, much to the delight and arousal of the Joshua Tree Community. She has recently returned to the desert from Portland, where she spent a year performing her pantomime act on the variety circuit and learning theatrical mask making with acclaimed mask artist Bruce Marrs. She is the proud recipient of no fewer than thirteen DTL awards from Desert Theatre League.

LIYAN LAGEVARDI - Liyan is excited to once again be back on stage for Theatre 29, even virtually. She was most recently the Assistant Musical Director for SISTER ACT, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, and THE WIZARD OF OZ. Liyan was last seen on stage at Theatre 29 as "Cinderella" in INTO THE WOODS. Previous to this she was "LCDR Joanne Galloway" in The St. Joseph’s Players' production of A FEW GOOD MEN which garnered her a Desert Theatre League Nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. Liyan would like to sincerely thank Scott for the joy of being in a production with so many talented actors and amazing friends. She is also grateful for the care and safety both he and Lisa have committed to in order to bring this production to life during the pandemic. Liyan continues to look forward to when theatre returns to the hi-desert in full force. Until then, it’s only intermission!

CEISLEY JEFFERSON - Ceisley is thrilled to be a part of Theatre 29's production of Songs For a New World. She made her Theatre 29 debut virtually last year during the virtual HOME EDITION. Past credits include Leah in BEAUTIFUL THING and Henri in THE VIEW UPSTAIRS at Desert Rose Playhouse, Gary Coleman in AVENUE Q and a Dynamite in HAIRSPRAY at Palm Canyon Theater, Lorell in DREAMGIRLS, Sarah's Friend in RAGTIME, Lucy in You're A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN, the Narrator is JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, and ensemble in IN THE HEIGHTS, AIDA, and BIG RIVER. During such a difficult time, she is blessed to be able to continue to create art with so many talented people. She would like to thank her parents and son for their endless love and support.

VAN ANGELO - Van Angelo, is a Westminster Choir College graduate where he studied under soprano, Carolann Page.

Van is currently serving as Director of Choral Activities for Rancho Verde High School where he teaches choir, piano, private voice, and dramatic coaches. An active professional musician Van has been seen on stages with the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and Vienna Chamber Orchestra. THEATRE 29 CAST HALEY IZURIETA - Haley Izurieta is an actress based in Southern California.

Some of her credits include A CHORUS LINE (Cassie), IN THE HEIGHTS (Daniela), THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (Mrs. Flannery), HAIRSPRAY (Penny), VIOLET (Old Lady), and BRIGHT STAR (Ensemble). Professional credits include WEST SIDE STORY (Anita) with the Chance Theatre, WEST SIDE STORY (Consuelo) with Performance Riverside, and LEGALLY BLONDE (Mother/Judge/ Ensemble) with Candlelight Pavilion. This is her first time working with Theatre 29, and she couldn’t be more excited.

JACQUIE NICHOLSON - Jacquie Nicholson is a music graduate from Cal Baptist University. She is currently a high school English teacher for Yucca Valley High School with a masters degree in educational leadership. She is married and has two wonderful children. Jacquie is a classically trained soprano and a singer/ songwriter. Currently, Jacquie is finishing her first EP of original music titled, Let the Rocks Stay Silent; which is set to release in early 2021 on all major music platforms.

CHRISTIAN QUEVEDO - Coachella Valley Tenor and Desert Theatre League Award winner for best leading actor in a play and musical. Christian Quevedo holds an Associate Degree in Music and Theatre and has contributed his voice to countless of musical endeavors within the Coachella valley credits include, WEST SIDE STORY as Bernardo, OKLAHOMA as Curly, Rent as Roger, FOOTLOOSE as Chuck Cranston, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC as Mr. Erlanson, among many others. This season he is contributing his voice as lead tenor at the United Methodist Church of Palm Springs, as well as a choral member of the California Desert Chorale. Christian is currently pursuing a BM degree in Music with an emphasis In Vocal Performance at Cal State San Bernardino. Stay tuned for Christian’s upcoming performances. JASMINE SHAFFER - Jasmine is a Theatre 29 veteran, last seen portraying Wednesday Addams in THE ADDAMS FAMILY . Since then, Jasmine has performed in multiple shows at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center including, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS- Chiffon, GODSPELL, and DRACULA. She has also been seen on the Palm Canyon Theatre stage in HAIRSPRAY - Tracy Turnblad, SISTER ACT Sister Mary Patrick, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS - Katie, and ROCK OF AGES Justice. Jasmine is thankful for this unique theatre experience during this time of uncertainty in the world. Live theatre and the arts have played a pivotal part in her life and she cannot wait to share this wonderful show with everyone!

BEN BEES - Absent from the stage for two years by popular demand; back on the stage after two years against the popular vote, Ben is excited to be performing once again. He has acted in the Morongo Basin for over a decade and is thrilled to be reprising his role of Performer Needed. He was last seen as himself in 7 Eleven Debacle Regarding Spilled Chicken Wings, Man Cries Alone at Bust Stop and is an award-winning actor for his performance in Stater Bros: Why Can’t I come in, the Fever is Mild?!?. Ben is survived by three children and his wife Helen.

THEATRE 29 CREW SCOTT CLINKSCALES (ARTISTIC & MUSICAL DIRECTOR / SOUND, PERFORMER) - Scott Clinkscales is back in the Director seat for Theatre 29. Last season, he directed, musically directed, and co-choreographed the smash hit musical SISTER ACT which left audiences wanting more every night. Now, he's back to help entertain audiences with Theatre 29's first full-length virtual musical. Scott is no stranger to putting on a virtual show. In 2020, he, along with Lisa Goldberg, put together THEATRE 29: HOME EDITION and HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS. Recently, he also had the opportunity to work with North Star Theatre as Riff in their virtual production of WEST SIDE STORY. Scott is so excited to be putting on shows again, and cannot wait for the next opportunity to make theatre happen.

LISA GOLDBERG (ASSISTANT DIRECTOR / LIGHTING TECHNICIAN) Lisa is so excited for everyone to see this beautiful show. This is Lisa’s fourth time being an Assistant Director, her first foray into the realm was aside Katie Fleischman for the classic comedy THE ODD COUPLE, and most recently with last year’s Smash Hit, SISTER ACT also directed by Scott Clinkscales. Lisa has been a performer since she was 6 years old, acting, singing and dancing. During the shut down over the past year, Lisa has enjoyed putting together THEATRE 29: HOME EDITION and HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS with Scott and looks forward to the day when live performances can take place again, when she hopes will finally get to be on stage once again, as well as make her directorial debut.

MARK CLINKSCALES ( POSTPRODUCTION VIDEO EDITOR) made his big break in a backstage capacity last season with SISTER ACT. He is currently enrolled at Grand Canyon University where he is working towards his Bachelor's Degree in Film. Mark is excited to be able to put his film studs to work, capturing this unique show.

BRIANNA JILLSON (SOUND TECHNICIAN) after a two year hiatus, marks her 22nd show at Theatre 29, including but not limited to INTO THE WOODS, THE MOUSETRAP, MEET ME IN ST LOUIS, THE WIZARD OF OZ, FIRST DATE, CARRIE: THE MUSICAL, ANNIE, A BAD-YEAR FOR TOMATOES, OKLAHOMA!, and THE MURDER ROOM & THE GLASS MENAGERIE . She would like to thank her mommy for her support, and she would like to thank her crew for dealing with her shenanigans. She is thrilled to be able to be a part of this production, as it will be her last as she departs to West Virginia to explore new horizons.

ANITA CLINKSCALES (PRODUCTION MANAGER) makes her debut behind the scenes at Theatre 29. However, she has always had her son, Scott’s, back when it came to supporting his artistic efforts!

MIGUEL ARBALLO (SOUND ENGINEER) is a multi award winning actor, technician and musician for various venues throughout the Coachella Valley. He is grateful that Scott asked him to aid in this unique production.

SHAFIK WAHHAB (CINEMATOGRAPHER) is a multi award winning actor & director for several Coachella Valley theatre venues. He is happy to help Scott out with this production, working behind the camera.

These are the stories and characters of today, the Songs For A New World. The first musical from Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, this moving collection of powerful songs examines life, love, and the choices we make.

Each song tells an individual's story and experience. Their stories are not connected in the traditional way we see them in a musical. These stories are universal experiences that tell us about the human condition.

He studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and began working in musical theater in New York City in the early '90s, where he concentrated on merging pop/rock sensibilities with the long tradition of Broadway musicals. His first musical, SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD, debuted in 1995. PARADE, a musical Brown wrote with Alfred Uhry based on the trial and lynching of Leo Frank, premiered at the Lincoln Center Theatre in 1998, eventually winning Brown a Tony Award for Best Musical Score. THE LAST FIVE YEARS followed and was staged in 2002. Brown has composed incidental music for several New York stage productions, and he contributed several songs to the ill-fated Broadway version of URBAN COWBOY. He has also done orchestral and arrangement work for Liza Minelli, Laurie Beechman, Tovah Feldshuh, Yoko Ono, and vocal group the Tonics. Lauren Kennedy released an album of his songs called Songs of Jason Robert Brown in 2003. Brown's first solo album, Wearing Someone Else's Clothes, was released by Sh-K-Boom Records (in conjunction with Ghostlight and Razor & Tie) in 2005. An accomplished pianist and performer, Brown gigs regularly with his two-man band the Caucasian Rhythm Kings. He is married to fellow composer Georgia Stitt.
