A group of 238 seniors graduated from Petersburg High School on Saturday, June 7.

ou could forgive some people if they thought they were seeing double at the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2014 at Petersburg High School.

Among the 238 students that graduated June 7 were five sets of twins.

Levy Jones IV and Lonzie Jones were one set of twins to graduate. They played football together — Levy Jones as quarterback and Lonzie Jones as wide receiver.

The 2014 graduating class received a total of $1,664,963 from scholarships, awards, athletic grants, opportunity grants, military grants, leadership awards, and honorariums. One of the recipients of the awards was salutatorian Khaila Ellis, who was awarded the $500 Germaine S. Fauntleroy Scholarship at the ceremony.

Ellis and her sister Shaila Ellis were part of the sets of twins graduating.

Grade point averages were also a big number at this graduation. Valedictorian Jasmin Hurt graduated with a GPA of 4.333.

New challenges await the 111 young women and 127 young men who walked across the stage. According to Fields, 75 are attending four-year colleges, 58 are attending two-year liberal arts colleges, 18 are planning to attend two-year technical college, 12 are planning to attend nursing school, 25 are joining the military, 50 are planning on entering the workforce.

day of showers on June 13 couldn’t stop the class of 2014 at Colonial Heights High School from graduating on time and at the athletic field at Colonial Heights Middle School, which is where the ceremony is traditionally held.

School officials had alternate plans to hold the ceremony inside the high school if it rained, but the plans continued as usual.

That meant 212 graduating seniors received their diplomas just as previous classes have.

Following the day’s stormy weather, salutatorian Anna Meredith Scott spoke of learning from one’s past without being clouded by it when looking to the future.

“I encourage all of us to embrace our past enough to grow and learn,” she said.

“Not only is that diploma proof that you do know basic mathematics; it is your story.”

Valedictorian Anna-Claire Virginia Bousquet spoke of not being defined by your circumstances, but instead by your choices.

“You can do whatever you want in life no matter what your background is.”

A group of over 200 seniors graduated from Hopewell High School on Saturday, June 7.

T

he Hopewell High School class of 2014 was a group of students that were close after facing a series of challenges.

The more than 200 students that graduated June 7 persevered through construction noise as the high school was renovated, changing school leadership and other challenges.

Scott Layne, class vice president, joked that during the extensive renovation project their freshman year, “we were worried the school was going to collapse.”

They even had to stand their ground to host commencement at Merner Field.

“Our class has been through a lot, but our class is also one of the strongest groups of people I’ve ever met,” said Aurelis Feliciano Vazquez, SCA president.

Valedictorian Katelyn Durante spoke about turning dreams into reality. “If we all stuck with our first dream, the world would be overrun with princesses and cowboys,” she said. “We owe it to ourselves, if no one else, to continue to strive for the best that we can do.”

ot only did it not rain on the Dinwiddie High School class of 2014, but the sun was shining n the 306 new graduates who looked forward to making that next step in their young lives. There were concerns that it could rain on the day of the ceremony, but the weather was fine for the June 13 commencement.

“This commencement is not only the first of many milestones, but also a bridge that links our adolescence to our adulthood,” salutatorian Marissa Roby said.

According to valedictorian Logan Harrison, the spot for top student in the class was down to the wire with him and Roby.

“We really didn’t know [who the valedictorian was going to be] until about four days ago, so that was pretty exciting,” Harrison said.

Aside from knowing who the top student

would be, it was a day of reflection on the football field as seniors entered into the world of adulthood.

“Today is the day we walk across the football field for the last time as students,” Camille Jones, class president, said during her reflections speech. “Today we share tears, hugs and celebrate with those who we never thought we would become so close with.”

Jones also spoke on the transition she and many other students experienced from kindergarten to their senior year, going from cubbies to personal lockers and now moving on to their different paths.

“For the class of 2014, my hope and prayer is that whenever and wherever we are our circumstances never stop us from achieving our dreams,” Jones said.

he 61st commencement of Prince George High School on June 7 involved a beginning and end beyond the normal graduation ceremony.

It was the last commencement that was led by retiring principal Tracey Smallwood after a 33-year career in education. And it of course marked a new beginning for students.

Samantha Crabtree said that the school has helped her overcome a disability that leaves her wheelchair bound with limited use of her limbs. “I feel that it has enriched my life because no one judges me because I am in a wheelchair. Everyone supports me.”

Crabtree, who was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, said that the condition’s effect on her muscles made fin-

ishing school work difficult.

“It takes me longer to do my homework.

It can take up to five hours writing,” she said. “Just maneuvering a calculator is difficult.”

Crabtree plans to become a school guidance counselor so she can give back.

Like many high school graduates, Alexis Baker faces the challenge of figuring out her future.

“I really don’t have any actual plans but I’m more excited than scared,” she said.

Baker is considering either dentistry or general studies and may enroll in Richard Bland College.

t was the 50th anniversary of Matoaca High School students graduating and the class of 2014 did it with the students’ record-setting achievements and commitment to the community.

During his salutatorian address on June 9, Zachary Zumbo praised the class for earning $2,655 million in scholarship funds, the most in school history. He also applauded the students’ focus on extracurricular activities and for being service oriented.

“This class is too impressive for words,” Zumbo said.

The class of 2014 also had the most students — over 80 percent of the class — taking Advanced Placement or college-level

courses.

“This year’s graduating class is truly one of the most outstanding that has ever been bestowed with the name Matoaca Warriors,” he said.

Valedictorian Ashley Alex, who was awarded over $168,000 in scholarship funds, congratulated class members for all of their accomplishments, but told them to remember their support systems as they move on in life.

homas Dale High School celebrated its 106th commencement on June 6 with over 180 students from the school recognized during the graduation for receiving scholarships and awards.

Valedictorian Carlene Uzel told graduates to strive to succeed while still leaving time for fun.

“Stay focused on goals and dreams, but don’t just focus on crossing to the other side of the river. Dip your toes in and have fun and get wet once in a while,” she said.

Thomas Dale graduate Stephanie Johnson said that she was glad to be moving on to the next stage in her academic career.

“It’s good to know that I’m done,” she said.

Johnson plans to attend Liberty University to major in biology. During high school, she was a part of the Beta Club and the National Spanish Honors Society.

Graduate Trevone Ingram-Stone remembered his time running track for Thomas Dale High School. He said that running track helped him to fit in as a child in a mobile military family.

“It was mainly about adaptation,” he said.

A group of 100 seniors graduated from the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School For the Arts and Technology.

bout 100 students from the region graduated June 13 during the 13th annual commencement ceremony at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School.

Guest speakers spoke of the graduates’ artistic gifts, and all student speakers echoed each other when they expressed that they had found a home at ARGS. Ashley James said she envisioned the school as the one in High School Musical before she started there.

“I saw the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for Arts and Technology as the perfect place for my fantasies about the artistic high school experience to come true,” she said.

James said she learned this wasn’t the

case, but found that she could be friends with any of the students, all of which come from different backgrounds. Overall, she learned that the students at ARGS cared and looked out for each other, no matter what their differences may be.

“I found that there was no status quo at ARGS. I found a place that made me feel like I could try anything. I found a family,” she said.

Guest speaker and best-selling novelist, Meg Medina, encouraged all of the students to share their gifts, not all of which are necessarily artistic, with others and to “regift” them.
