Call for new bus stops

By Fraser Walker-Pearce LINWOOD residents are angry that two major bus stops in their area have been overlooked while others around the city are being upgraded.

Bus patrons are keen to see the stops receive the same upgrades as those at Westfield Riccarton and Northlands Shopping Centre.

A city council spokeswoman said the Buckleys Rd bus stops, outside Eastgate Shopping Centre, were the fourth most used in the city in terms of passengers boarding and departing buses, between

Monday and Friday, in March.

The three most popular were the city centre interchange, the Riccarton Rd interchange, and the Northlands’ hub, she said.

Bus user Chris Minogue said he wanted to see a Northlands-style bus shelter installed at the stop across the road from Eastgate.

“It needs to be longer, sheltered, and without glass that can be broken.

There’s no point in having glass windows because they’re broken every time I come here,” he said.

“We’ve asked the new transport committee or the city council to look at all options for putting in a covered, integrated bus hub in the area. There’s a nice one at both Riccarton and Northlands, and we want the same here,” she said.

Mrs Templeton agreed with Mayor Lianne Dalziel, who last week said she had an issue with the little control the city council had when it came to public transport in the city.

News Community centre stalled

By Siobhan Watson and Andrew King THE NEW Shirley Community Centre will not receive funding from a church after a community board elected to reject its proposal.

The Crossway Community Church proposed to the Shirley-Papanui Community Board that a collaboration between the church and the city council be used to fund and maintain the new centre.

The board rejected the proposal with a 4-3 vote at a recent meeting.

Church secretary Pat White said although they were disappointed with the outcome, they have other options in place for the church’s location.

“It would have been nice to get an answer sooner than this . . . but that is the way it is, now we just have to move on,” she said.

Board chairman Mike Davidson said he was “uncomfortable” with the level of investment needed by the city council to make it work with the church.

“The council would need to invest around $1.5m for the building itself and further

funding for land remediation,” he said He said it was possible the required funds could top $2m.

“That would be a lot of money to spend on a centre in partnership with a church . . . I don’t have any problem with the organisation, I am just uncomfortable about the level of investment,” he said.

Cr Pauline Cotter also shared this sentiment, saying she was not happy with the terms of the agreement.

She said the proposed amount of funding contributed by the city council and the church seemed to be 50/50, but the ownership was not equal.

The plan now is to replicate some of the learnings the board had while getting the St Albans Community Centre off the ground.

“It will probably start with a working party to find out what the community wants and needs. From there, things start to take off pretty quickly,” Mr Davidson said.

He could not give a definitive time frame around when a working party would be formed, but the board is looking at its options to start sooner rather than later.

In Brief POETRY AT PARKLANDS National Poetry Day will be celebrated at Parklands in August. The Parklands Library will host one of more than 70 events planned throughout the country. The library will provide a chance for some of its own librarians to read their work on Saturday August 27 at 2pm. The four librarianpoets will be Damien ‘Tihore’ Taylor, Rob Lees, Dylan Kemp, and Andrew Bell. Some of the librarians have published poetry books available at Christchurch City Libraries.

TINY HUTS ON SHOW An exhibition showcasing entries in the Tiny Huts design competition is now open to the public. The exhibition is being held at 60 Brighton Mall. It features all of the 90 entries in a city council-run competition to design a 2m by 2m hut for New Brighton’s town centre.

The city council plans to install five of the tiny huts in New Brighton during next summer to liven up public places. A judging panel will look at the most popular designs to determine five winning entries. The winners will include one from the schools’ category, three from the open category, and a people’s choice champion.

FROM FIJI Thought I’d write a slightly different article….

I’m in Fiji for ITF tennis with my son Dylan for 2 weeks and I’ve never been to Fiji before. An interesting, warm place with splendid people. I’ve met some great folk and seen some great tennis and seen plenty of animals I so want to help. We have had our share of ups and downs on the tennis court ( cramping and a pulled hamstring) and at our resort ( leaking air conditioning units, power cuts, no Wifi as promised), but all has been sorted eventually and has made for a real travel experience, one I’ll never forget.

We are a reasonable drive from the tennis so it’s been a 45 minute car drive filled of daily adventures. We have had goats and cows just traverse the road in front of us, speeding cars and then ones that sit at 35km/hour and you can’t pass them as passing lanes are rare. We have seen a road traffic accident with fatalities sadly. Fijians just aim casually along the sides of the roads waiting to be picked up for work or getting places on foot. Everyone looks happy and relaxed in sparkling clean attire, yet there is brown dust everywhere that infiltrates everything.

The school children look fantastic in often starched white uniforms and clamber on the open aired buses, arms hanging out the sides, laughing. The drivers are hugely considerate, almost dangerously so, slowing right down to let cars cross in the middle of a busy open road. No one is in a hurry and everyone is up and rearing to go at 6.30am, waiting to be picked up for work. Not many people here own cars and taxis are everywhere.

The dogs touch my heart though. There are so many that aimlessly wander all over the place – in towns, sides of roads, the tennis center and outside homes.

No one takes responsibility for them as the breeding is rampant and out of control. None are desexed so there are puppies everywhere.

They are scarily thin, bloated with worms, crawling with fleas and ticks and hungry. They still manage a tail wag though and I’ve even managed to pat a few. I’m feeding them bread and one square meals and they are so gently accepting food. Many of them have sores all over their bodies, no hair and many are feeding puppies. Ive hardly seen any cats, except ones that have unfortunately been squashed on the roads. The grazing tethered cows look friendly but on approaching them, they show me the whites of their eyes and lower their heads to charge. I have met a local Fijian Architect who is building a Veterinary Hospital In Nadi, funded

by a wealthy American couple who want to help the companion animals here.

There is a small SPCA clinic in Lautoka but no surgeries can be performed there.

The only clinic is in Suva where short anaesthetics can be performed. I think Steve and I would be keen to come back here and offer our expertise and help these animals and train some of the vets here. We’d bring equipment and supplies with us next time.

I have befriended a fantastic group of Fijian children at the Lautoka tennis club. They are aged between 7 and 12 years of age and get tennis coaching for free on Sundays, racquets and balls provided by the club. None of them have shoes to play in, most are from very poor families and tennis is an expensive sport. I went out and bought 10 pairs of sports shoes of different sizes for them to be kept at the club and used for the children that need them. They were all so grateful. Dylan is back in August so I’ll send back most of the boys old tennis tops for the kids to enjoy playing in. If they progress at tennis it could be a way out for these children.

Kennedy’s Bush resident Graham Townsend writes this week’s opinion piece about the lack of critical thinking when it comes to topics such as climate change I’ve spent a lifetime teaching science.

If you define science to include critical thinking, I count the efforts of New Zealand as a total failure.

Why? Because critical thinking is the ability to examine evidence and conflicting claims without allowing prejudices or personal interest to intrude.

And critical thinking, sadly, is in seriously short supply today.

This is what the pioneering psychologist William James meant when he said that “A great many people think they are thinking, when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.”

An example: climate change.

Comment threads and twitter feeds are full of unsupported prejudice rather than fact.

“Climate change is not happening”; “scientists are all lying to get more funding for their research”; “climate always changes, it’s not our fault”; “we are due for a new ice age so climate change is good”.

People who post this rubbish ignore that fact that science is a merciless process of critically analysing both the raw data and the predictions made from them.

I invite any lay-person who thinks they can do better to submit their own analysis to the global science community.

Fame and possibly fortune awaits you if you can prove the current consensus wrong.

So why do these denier memes refuse to die?

Simply because we can’t face the conclusion that we

– all of us – are changing the climate.

That unpleasant fact hits at the heart of our whole lifestyle: our love affair with cars, jet skis, quad bikes and flying.

So the hands go over the ears and we start coming up with excuses and lies.

Let me state this clearly: every major national science academy around the world has examined the evidence and they are all seriously concerned.

So what do we do?

Individual actions are not enough – we need policy changes at a national and international level.

Politicians generally follow public opinion – they will do nothing until we demand action.

And that won’t happen until enough of us face the truth.

That brings me back to education and critical thinking.

H.G Wells famously said “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe”.

That’s never been truer or more urgent than today.

Use your vote wisely.

I won’t forget my 2 weeks here.

Everybody thought I wouldn’t like Fiji at all, but the openness and genuine friendliness and interest shown by these people have made this experience one I’ll never forget. I feel Steve, Isaac and I can make a difference to these people in educating them on respecting and caring for their pets, when we next return. It makes you really realize how priviledged and wealthy we all are. Giving back a little feels good.

Just an update on Indie, the White German Shepherd, who managed to deliver 8 little wriggley white pups on her own ( 6 boys and 2 girls) on 16th June. All are doing well, she is an exceptional mother and my friend Mala is realizing how big a responsibility and job breeding is. All pups have homes – 6 will be staying in Christchurch and 2 heading North.

News Rise in water quality

By Fraser Walker-Pearce A SOUTHSHORE community leader says improvement in water quality around the estuary is a step in the right direction.

New data has been released by Environment Canterbury showing gradual improvements in water quality for sites on the east.

The report showed the quality of water for the last year at high tide in Caspian St, Penguin St, South New Brighton Park, Sandy Point, Humphreys Drive, Beachville Rd jetty, Ferrymead Bridge, Shag Rock, and Cave Rock.

Each site was given a very poor, poor, fair, good, or very good score, depending on the contents of the sampled water, some of which included bacteria, faecal matter, chlorophyll a, and many other contaminants.

Caspian St was one of the best of the five eastern sampled sites, with a score of 74.6 out of 100.

South Brighton Residents’ Association chairman Hugo Kristinsson said it was a step in the right direction.

“The water quality in this area has improved, but that improvement is not man made. It has solved some problems but generated others that haven’t been dealt with. There are a lot of steps

to be taken further down the line. There needs to be sustainable planning,” he said.

Author of the report Lesley Bolton-Ritchie said sites on the south side of the estuary like Beachville Rd jetty would always have a higher score than sites on the north and eastern banks.

“The closer to the estuary mouth you are, the more tidal influence there is. It’s healthier for aquatic life on the other side of the estuary, and also for swimming,” she said.

Mrs Bolton-Ritchie said the

Penguin St site was on the rise as well, due to its proximity to the estuary mouth.

“Penguin St is pretty good, just because it’s closer to the river mouth . . . the only one of those sites that isn’t that flash is the South New Brighton Park site,” she said.

Penguin St was rated the highest eastern site with a score of 75.3. South New Brighton Park got a ‘poor’ rating of 51.6. Sandy Point had a ‘poor’ rating, and scored 41.2. The Bridge St Bridge scored a ‘poor rating’ of 46.

THE NEW Brighton Library will be closing on August 1, but not for long.

A temporary library will open its doors at 60 Brighton Mall just two weeks after the bigger library closes its doors.

New Brighton Library is expected to reopen early next year.

Work to be done includes repairing the concrete columns and floors, replacing the eastfacing first-floor windows, painting the exterior and putting in new carpet.

City council community libraries manager Erica Rankin said the library had sustained “moderate” earthquake damage in 2011, but would be quickly repaired.

“New Brighton Library is a popular locale, certainly with the most striking setting and views of any library in our network, and it’s going to be

getting the tender loving care it deserves,” she said.

Mrs Rankin said it was important the community had a temporary location while the works were being carried out.

“The New Brighton community are incredibly engaged library-users, and the decision to set up shop in New Brighton . . . means that they get that allimportant stability,” she said.

The temporary location will offer a small collection, including all the usual items for borrowing, plus eight free internet computers. The opening hours will be the same and pre-school sessions will continue as normal.

Because it will take library staff about two weeks to clear New Brighton Library and set up at the temporary location, there will be a period from August 1 to 14 where no library services will be available.

Our People Young leader’s social equality vision Parklands resident Josiah Tualamali’i is a 21-year-old on the US Embassy Youth Council, the chairman of a Pacific youth leadership group and a Canterbury University student. Fraser Walker-Pearce talks to him about superhero shows, how he became a leader for Pasifika youth in Christchurch, and meeting NASA’s deputy director Hi Josiah. What have you been up to recently?

Among other things, we organised for about 280 young people to come to the Transitional Cathedral on June 30. It was organised by some of my friends and I to generate ideas about decision-making and just gather for some food and a brainstorm session. It was a really fun night with food and ideas being shared.

Sounds good. Can you tell me a bit about PYLAT? PYLAT stands for Pacific Youth Leadership and Transformation. It’s a charitable trust that supports young people in the Pacific community, and helps to make the Pacific youth aware of opportunities in the community.

And you’re also part of the United States Embassy Youth Council. What exactly is that?

Canterbury University and all universities in New Zealand hand-pick a number of students who are then checked by the US Embassy. So they’re gathering youth leaders who have access to different communities in the city, so the embassy can keep the finger on the pulse of youth groups in the city.

So do you have meetings with the embassy often? And what happens with that information?

They communicate what we tell them back to Washington, because one of Obama’s foreign policy focuses was to do a Pacific pivot, gathering up all knowledge on what’s going on in Pacific countries. The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement was part of it, but it was also about bettering relationships with Pacific communities. So there are 12 leaders in Canterbury for that, and I am one of them. We have a meeting every now and then

with different diplomats, business leaders and ex-pats. They help us, and we give them our knowledge about what’s going on. It’s kind of cool this week on Saturday, because we’re actually meeting with the deputy director of NASA, and it’s especially cool because she’s a woman.

We don’t even know why we’re meeting with her! It’s especially interesting because of an event we held last week, where we were hoping to bridge gaps, like giving women equal visibility, opportunities and platforms to excel.

And now we get to meet one of the top women in NASA. It’s a secret meeting which we don’t know much about. We could be talking about Mars, we could be talking about anything, it’s very exciting.

What inspired you to become a youth voice for the Pacific community?

I think it was probably the youth parliament that we had before the earthquakes. It was that others took the time to tell me that I could make a difference. I guess I was in the right place, at the right time. Just good people being around me.

How long have you been involved with PYLAT? I’ve been chairman for three years now, so I started my second two-year term last year, after I was re-elected. Before the earthquakes in 2010, the Pacific community held a staged youth government because they noticed there weren’t many youth voices in decision-making at the time.

And we loved it so much that after the earthquakes, we kind of thought, well, how do we keep it going after the earthquakes?

So we made it into the trust it is now. We now have 13 trustees, with about two-thirds of that as

youth and students, and young professionals make up the rest.

Are you striving to see Christchurch’s youth have a bigger input into decision making?

Yes, absolutely, so what we say in PYLAT is that Pacific young people have valid information and ideas that can be useful at any level. That could be for the Government, non-government organisations, anything, but there’s a big trust element in it.

It can be tough to trust that a young person can have input to these conversations, while being respectful and articulate. I really liked last year seeing the flag panel had a young person on it.

You do all of this work for youth and on boards, do you have any spare time at all? Any hobbies?

Yes, I really like to sing. I used to sing in a choir, but now I just

sing when I’m pottering around the flat and doing things. I also like watching TV programmes, anything with heroes really. The Arrow and Flash series are the best ones and I go to the movies a bit, too. I like to think that we don’t need a super power to do cool things in our community, and it’s cool to watch the people that we pretend we are, and do those amazing things.

Where are you flatting for university?

I flat in Ilam, but my family home is in Parklands. I just went back to my flat last night. It’s all a bit busy, because I also do some work on campus for Pacific young people, tutoring them to help them get their NCEA levels.

It’s cool to see that Canterbury University cares about getting them over the line and offering those classes.

Oh right, so what subjects do you tutor?

I tutor history, English and drama. Those were the ones I was quite good at during school.

It’s also a cool project because the students can go on to tertiary education if they want, because they have the qualifications.

Why were history and English your favourites at school?

I really liked understanding why we’re at the place we are now through our history. Also, learning about colonisation, racism, and all of those words that get thrown around these days. It’s also quite important to me because my mum is Palagi (Samoan word for European), and my father is Samoan. So for me, it was quite hard when I was young to work out my own identity. After all the classes in history and English, I kind of learnt what was right and wrong for me through those classes. Growing up as a Pacific person, I could understand the benefits, and the strengths of those people.

What high school did you attend?

I went to Hillview Christian School for years 9 and 10, then to Middleton Grange School for years 11 to 13.

And what primary school?

I actually went to primary school in Dunedin, to Anderson’s Bay School for the first few years, then to Hillview for the other half of primary.

You study history and politics at university, so what job would you have if you could just pick one and start tomorrow?

I can’t give one answer to that really. I’d want to be the CEO of a company that works with Pacific people and uses the knowledge the community has taught me. I’d want to increase the participation and involvement of the community. The only problem is that I don’t know if that kind of job exits yet. I wouldn’t mind working in the university for a while, and I’m enjoying tutoring at the moment. I could definitely see myself teaching others as well.

News Inmates help feed the homeless INMATES FROM Christchurch Men’s Prison have grown more than 2300kg of vegetables and herbs, as well as 3400 seedlings, for a very worthy cause.

Over the past 10 months, men from Tirohanga Paeroa Unit have built vegetable gardens, and grown and contributed vegetables and seedlings to those in need. The programme has been undertaken with assistance from charity group, Help for the Homeless.

Prison residential manager Graeme Hunter said the men wanted to keep busy and do something that would make a difference for people in need in the community.

“The new gardens seemed the perfect way to do something useful with the land around the unit, engage the men in a helpful

activity while they learnt useful lifestyle and, potentially, employable skills,” he said.

Those who work in the garden gain credits towards a National Certificate in Horticulture qualification.

In his mid-40s, he has a background in crop farming and market gardens.

He has been involved in the project from the start and has taken on a leadership role in the gardens.

“I mentor others through the practical aspects of the course – weeding, turning soil over, planting seedlings into seed trays. Some of the men have a limited knowledge of gardening, but there is a correct way to do these things, to grow the best

produce,” he said.

Help for the Homeless was founded in 2014 by Amy Burke, of New Brighton, who saw homeless people hungry, cold, or going through rubbish bins in Christchurch.

“Produce from the prison gardens is delivered to [Help for the Homeless] cooks who create dishes for our locals,” Ms Burke.

“We also provide support to the recently housed, including youth and any family going through hardship. This filters to schools and community organisations, depending on surplus.”

The 3400 seedlings, grown as part of the NZQA horticulture course, were given to the charity for their ‘recently housed’ homeless.

This will enable them to learn to live off the land, too.

Youth offenders targeted in health partnership CORRECTIONS AND kaupapa Maori health provider Purapura Whetu have partnered to deliver better health outcomes and “crime-free futures” for youth offenders.

Purapura Whetu will provide a wraparound service for Maori youth offenders and their whanau, aiming to connect them

to their culture and traditions.

Maori offenders make up 43.7 per cent of people on community sentences in the country.

This is the first time Canterbury Corrections has partnered with a health provider specifically to provide targeted services for at-risk Maori youth offenders.

Corrections Canterbury dis-

trict manager Lisa Joseph said: “We are working together to intervene and steer this group of youth toward better health outcomes and crime-free futures.”

SHIRLEY BOYS’ High School student Joel Jeffrey (far right) helped the Canterbury under-17 A team to their best ever finish at last week’s national tournament in Auckland.

Canterbury A defeated Waitakere West 69-65 on Saturday in the third/fourth play-off game.

It was the best ever finish for a Canterbury under-17 boys’ team

at a national tournament.

Jeffrey helped the team go undefeated in pool play.

He then scored seven points in Canterbury’s 116-68 demolition of Porirua Capital in the quarterfinal.

Canterbury lost to eventual tournament winners Harbour A in the semi-final.

The Canterbury B boys squad

finished the 20-team tournament in 13th spot, defeating Tauranga City 100-69 in their final game.

The Canterbury girls’ team finished in 10th spot at the tournament.

Jeffrey will now turn his attention to helping Shirley Boys’ in the Thompson Trophy when they take on Christ’s College next Tuesday.

Britneylee Nicholson took home the Golden Boot award at the weekend’s National Youth Futsal Championships. She scored nine goals during the tournament, helping her Mainland under-19 girls’ team to the national title. The three-day tournament was held in Palmerston North. Mainland’s under-19 girls’ side won the title with a 3-0 win over runner-up Capital on Sunday. 16-year-old Britneylee plays her football for Coastal Spirit and has also played for Mainland Pride in the national women’s competition. She is captain of the St Andrew’s first XI. Mainland also won the under-16 boys and under-15 girls’ titles.

Benji Lapslie won the under-19 boys’ Golden Boot, scoring 15 goals.

knocks, sprains and strains Knocks, bangs, strains and sprains are part of normal day-today life, especially with sport and recreational activity.

DOING tHE right things early (within the first 48 hours) can often settle mild injuries without the need for further treatment – or at least minimise tissue damage, giving your recovery the best start.

The acronym for self treatment, RICE, is the way to remember what to do. REst (stop using the injured part), ICE (use an icepack for 20 minutes to reduce swelling, inflammation and pain), COMPREssION (use a bandage or wrap around a joint or limb to help control swelling, ELEVAtION (where possible lift up the injured part to help control swelling).

Often, over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NsAIDs) and paracetamol can be helpful as well. Be careful to follow the dose advice on the packet or check the website healthinfo. org.nz to see whether or not they will be suitable for you.

Equally important is to avoid things that will make it worse.!

Remember HARM; HEAt (avoid heating the part this increases swelling and inflammation), ALCOHOL (alcohol will increase bleeding and inflammation), RUNNING (avoid vigorous activity using the sore part), MAssAGE (rubbing and acute injury will increase bleeding and swelling). seek immediate help if you have severe pain, are unable to put weight through the part or if the part is deformed (bent or grossly swollen).

Preschool children can start their musical journey by joining in our experiential “take Orff with Music” while older children and adults may opt for group or individual lessons on a specific instrument (including voice).

Computing For Free - still going strong after 15 years Ara Institute of Canterbury (formerly CPIT) has provided free computer courses at four hubs across Christchurch for over 15 years.

Now, it is evolving to better connect a wide variety of learners with accessible training for basic computer skills or upskilling to improve career opportunities.

And that they can do it. You see people come in who feel afraid of computers, but we are here to help them to achieve. Study is not easy for everyone, but our programmes have a good balance of theory and practice, plus the

programmes are self-paced to fit around other commitments such as work and family.

For many people it is a huge stepping stone.

They may have been made redundant or been out of the workforce after having children.

Here they can connect with other people and learn new skills that will make them more employable and give them confidence to try other things too. They might have used computers in the past, but programmes change and skills need to be updated.

What sort of feedback do you get?

Because we’re like a family, once people have finished their studies here, they come back and tell us what they’re doing. Our programmes lead into further computing studies at Ara, or they can help you to find work. I think most importantly, our students get a taste of what they’re capable of. They develop computer skills but they also develop confidence and brush up on the soft skills, such as communication and networking, that employers value in today’s workplaces.

10 essential computer skills for the workplace Computer tutor Josh Hough, who teaches school students through Ara Institute of Canterbury, offers some useful tips about basic computing for employment.

1. Knowing how to use a computer Knowing how to actually operate a computer will make you a much more efficient employee. Having an understanding of the appearance, keyboard commands and ways in which the computer operating system works will make you more valuable to your employer.

2. Word processing skills Word processing is an absolutely essential skill in today’s job market. Many employers require their staff to be able to proficiently write, edit, and produce a variety of documents using a computer.

3. Using the internet Being able to confidently use the internet is crucial for job seekers. Having the ability to complete research by browsing various websites or by using search engines can allow you to easily find things out – useful for both work and home life!

4. Using email Many workplaces now use email as their primary method of communication.

Having a good understanding of how to use it is essential. Knowing about correct email etiquette is also important as it’s easy to convey the wrong message when communicating in text only.

5. Using Microsoft Office Many employers use specialist software, however the majority use Microsoft office for common tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentations.

Being familiar with these programmes is an essential skill to possess.

Being able to organise your files effectively is a desirable skill for many employers.

Many students discover a passion and an aptitude for computing through Computing For Free. Having boosted their confidence and study skills, they then decide to take their knowledge further.

There are a wide range of pathways available for studying computing at Ara depending on the career outcomes you want to achieve and how long you want to study for. All programmes are developed in conjunction with industry to provide the most up-to-date and relevant knowledge of this fast-paced and exciting industry.

The entry point for the Department of Computing programmes is the New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology Essentials Level 4. This six month, full time programme offers an excellent overview of

major computing areas including hardware, operating systems, networking and security, user experience, website design and development, information systems, and software design and development. It also covers the professional, ethical and legal context of computing in the real world.

Many students discover a passion and an aptitude for computing through Computing For Free.

There are a number of 12 month New Zealand diplomas covering IT technical support or web development and design at level 5, and networking or systems administration at level 6. These can lead right through to the three year Bachelor of Information and Communication Technologies.

Youth who want to leave school and get started on their career can enrol in the Certificate in Foundation Studies Level 2 (Computing) through the Youth Guarantee programme at Ara, which is fees-free.

At the other end of the spectrum, professionals in the industry can put their expertise towards academic credits and a qualification through the Centre for Assessment of Prior Learning. This is an excellent way to upskill and achieve career progression.
