Rates hurdle looms BY TOM DOUDNEY Ratings changes are emerging as potential sticking points during the early stages of consultation on Selwyn’s draft Long Term Plan. The district council has proposed changing rates for water, wastewater, community centres and reserves from targeted to uniform. Lincoln Community Committee chairwoman Ivy Harper told the Selwyn Times that a proposed $70 rate for the Lincoln Event Centre could be a factor in whether it would support the other rating changes. The rate, which would be paid only by Lincoln residents, would be
additional to the general community centre rate and be used to pay off the remaining $1 million debt on the event centre. The committee has yet to finalise its submission. “We could probably submit that we could support the proposals [for uniform rates] but only if the [$70 rate] were removed,” Mrs Harper said. “They could argue that it’s specifically related to Lincoln but at the same time what is the point of having a general rate for everything if you then go and add additional amounts for one community?” District councillor Grant Miller said funding from sale of the land
