Elderly couple lose all in fire

By Emma-Jane McLennan AN ELDERLY couple have been left with only the clothes on their backs after fire devastated their uninsured house.

They are lucky to be alive after being rescued from their burning home by construction workers.

Victor and Pearl Hewitt, aged 98 and 85, were rescued by two passing construction workers after their Bewdley St, Spreydon, house (right), was engulfed in flames.

Mr Hewitt suffered burns while trying to douse the fire, which started in the kitchen. Chips cooking on the stove top had been left unattended.

“They got us out. Without those two you’d be looking at two deaths,” Mr Hewitt said of the two construction workers.

THAT’S ODD A SUSPECTED thief in the United States was reportedly caught after he decided to make crab cakes at the restaurant he broke into.

Most burglars want to get out as quick as possible, but Stephen Quinn was apparently more interested in satisfying his urge for the fishy treat.

While reportedly in the middle of preparing the dish at Delaware’s Planet X Cafe, police burst in following a tip off.

The 41-year-old had also apparently put aside some stolen alcohol and was seemingly readying himself for a sit down meal.

Quinn attempted to make a dash for freedom but was quickly apprehended, according to police.

He received a number of charges including burglary, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he was angrier he didn’t get to eat his crab cakes.

THE WORLD’S biggest hotel chains have flown into Christchurch to scrap over the Forsyth Barr building.

The Star has learned chains including Marriott International, Starwood Hotels, and the InterContinental Hotels Group all sent representatives to the city in the last couple of weeks.

The sale of the Forsyth Barr building was confirmed yesterday.

It will now be gutted and turned into a 200-room, 4.5 to 5-star hotel by its new owner.

Colliers national director of hotels Dean Humphries told The Star the battle to run the 17-storey, 70m building was hard fought.

He said around six of the “biggest hotel operators in the world” had flown in.

“Every group that flew in met with the new owner and were impressed with the building and what’s starting to happen in Christchurch,” he said.

Colliers will now review each chain’s business case and whittle the contenders down to a shortlist of two or three.

A final announcement on which chain will run the hotel is expected later this month.

Couple lose all in fire • From page 1 Mr Hewitt didn’t want to discuss why they didn’t have insurance. “It’s a long story,” he said yesterday.

He had dashed inside to try and stop the fire.

“I tried to put it out by pouring a bucket of water on it, which was stupid. It didn’t do anything, but I got a burn on the head.”

Fire Service spokesman Mark Thomas said that once the fire hit the pinex ceiling there was no hope

of stopping it.

“No amount of firefighting was ever going to save it. It’s very, very sad.”

The Hewitts left the property with only the clothes on their backs.

“We didn’t even have shoes,” Mr Hewitt said.

“I’m afraid that for the first time in my life I’m a beggar.”

They are currently staying at their daughter and son-in-law’s home, and clothing has been do-

nated to them by generous businesses.

Age Concern Canterbury is helping them with more permanent housing options.

“We’ve never lived a riotous life.

We don’t drink or smoke. We don’t bother the neighbours, except for burning the house down. We came into this world with nothing and we will go out with nothing.”

WRONG TROPHY: Several Crusaders have been labelled “disgraceful” by an animal protection group after being snapped on a South African hunting trip. Landmark Foundation posted the photo of Crusaders George Whitelock, Tyler Bleyendaal, Sam Whitelock, Tom Taylor and Ben Funnell next to a shot zebra, a blesbok, a gemsbok, and an eland on its Facebook page yesterday.

“Here are the Crusaders rugby players killing wildlife for laughs on a recent visit to South Africa,” the post said.

None of the animals were endangered.

Landmark Foundation is a South African non-Governmental organisation.

A KEY document for promoting the residential rebuild in the central city has come under fire from the city council.

In its submission on the Central City Development Unit’s draft residential chapter A Liveable City of the Central Christchurch Recovery Plan, the city council raised several concerns.

According to the city council submission: •The the proposed changes strip out any recognition to achieve diversity in the urban environment – namely, height, residual heritage and urban design. As they stand, the plan changes will, incrementally, see a drift towards uniformity rather than stimulating, distinctive, well designed communities.

•The city council undertook extensive analysis and modelling during its Central City

Living Zones review to inform its conclusions. CCDU has not undertaken any analysis to justify departure from these conclusions.

•There are questions about why, after professional city council and CCDU opinions had been aligned, subsequent changes have dictated a different pathway – notably in relation to urban design matters.

•The rights of existing property owners to comment on developments which breach rules that are there to safeguard their amenity are being removed.

•Aside from an unsubstantiated statement to commit to “work with the private sector to unleash residential potential in the city,” the chapter does little else to signal how investment in residential development can be supported or encouraged by non-regulatory approaches.

Bashed bus driver says it is safer in Iran

A BUS driver returned to Iran after being bashed unconscious, swearing his native country was safer than Christchurch.

On July 25, 17-year-old Lucy Anne Hamilton was jailed for 18 months for her part in a vicious attack and robbery of an Iranian bus driver on Marine Parade, New Brighton.

In February, Hamilton and two male alleged co-offenders aged 22 and 17 spat at the 40-year-old driver, grabbed him around his neck, and beat him unconscious before grabbing the bus’ coin tray.

After regaining consciousness, the driver was taken to hospital with cuts, swelling and bruising to his face and discharged the next day.

After two weeks’ health leave, he returned to work.

However, Go Bus operations manager Nigel Piper said he resigned after only a few weeks back on the job.

“He did return for a short period of time, but the incident had shaken him up so much he just didn’t recover,” he said.

“He went back to Iran because he thought it was safer than Christchurch, which is a bit ironic.”

“We offered counselling and support but at the end of all that he made the decision himself.”

Hamilton had recently been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

The submission also noted that it had been two years since the Recovery Plan was introduced.

“This recovery plan directed the council to work with CERA and propose changes to its planning rules for submission to the minister within six months ie: by March 1, 2013. This was delivered by the council.

“The draft chapter has now been published, a further 17 months after the council delivered the draft rules to the Minister [of Earthquake Recovery Gerry Brownlee], and based on the council’s analysis, still represents a work in progress.”

The Star asked the CCDU for comment on the issues raised by the city council in its submission.

In response, a spokeswoman said the submission would be considered alongside all other public comment on the draft chapter.

AN ARTICLE in Wednesday’s Star on serial stalker Vincent Kerry Warren said that Opawa Baptist Church pastor Rev Rob Petrini had written to the courts supporting Warren, who is a churchgoer and volunteer.

This was incorrect.

The letter of support was written by another pastor at the church, not Rev Petrini. The other pastor told The Star that the church would support and welcome Warren back when he was released from jail.

The Star apologises to Rev Petrini for the error.

Warren was sentenced to five years jail when he appeared in the district court on Wednesday.

He had stalked a Canterbury woman, a driving instructor, married, with children, for four years.

Rev Petrini issued a statement to The Star yesterday about Warren’s sentencing: “I was in court last Wednesday witnessing a person from our community being sentenced for a number of charges, among those, stalking and threatening to kill.

50 YEARS OF THE ARMED OFFENDERS SQUAD

AOS uses force The Armed Offenders Squad is celebrating 50 years. Today in part 2 of a Star series on the squad, reporter Max Towle speaks to Canterbury AOS chief Bryan Buck and deputy Matt Emery about what the team has become, and what it’s now trained to deal with

The guns, equipment, and members have changed, but the mantra remains the same.

Now 50 years old, Christchurch police’s Armed Offenders Squad has 19 tactical operators trained to cope with almost any potentially violent situation.

The team is made up of constables, road police, detectives . . . everyday cops.

In the last 12 months it made 134 deployments. Around 90 per cent were resolved through appeal – talking to the offender.

Inspector Bryan Buck says he was proud of how the team responded to all 134.

One of the most serious incidents he recalls was responding to a wheelchairbound suicidal gunman in Burnside in 2009.

“That was one of the first times a negotiator has come to me and said: ‘we’re just not getting through to this guy’,” says Inspector Buck.

“It was also one of the first times one of my team has been shot.”

The team member himself was shot in the face with a shotgun pellet, but recovered with moderate injuries.

Each member carries a rifle, handgun, smoke grenade, taser, baton, and a new trialled sponge projector that fires non-lethal squash ball shaped objects around 30-50m.

“We’re always looking at other tactical groups around the world and seeing how best we can upgrade our equipment,” says Inspector Buck.

“Our tactics haven’t hugely changed over 50 years, but our equipment has.”

Inside the team’s deployment room, Inspector Buck points to a black-andwhite photo of an AOS member casually smoking a cigarette in near-plain clothes during a deployment.

“You can see how much things have changed,” he says.

Each member is decked out in $20,000 worth of equipment weighing about 20kg.

“That’s why when we were chasing Billy the Hunted One, he kept getting away,” says Inspector Buck.

The Aramoana massacre in 1990 was the tipping point for the AOS. Time to get serious.

In the following years, the AOS underwent a massive review of its equipment and training.

“I was in the Invercargill squad at the time and we lost a few members because they decided ‘this wasn’t what we signed up for’,” he says.

“With Aramoana came the realisation that we were part of a team that may be shot at.”

Incidents, including the Jan Molenaar shooting in Napier, 2009, have led to risk assessments for search warrants becoming mandatory.

The AOS now searches properties, rather than front line cops, with a full tactical plan up its sleeve.

“Around 80 per cent of our work is pre-planned work such as search warrant assists for the Criminal Investigation Branch,” says Inspector Buck.

However, on chance deployments, he says “entering an offenders property or stronghold can be the last resort.”

“It’s rare we kick down a door and barge into a house . . . negotiation is vital and most of our work is resolved that way. But we are still ready to fire our weapon if required.”

The former fast and loud approach to a search is now slower and more methodical.

5 minutes with Graham Panckhurst Retiring judge recalls the High Court judge for 18 years, Justice Graham Panckhurst, hung up his gown for the final time last week. The respected judge presided over David Bain’s retrial and led the Pike River Royal Commission. He spoke to Max Towle at the court house.

Why retire now?

Because it’s time. I’m 68 so I could have worked for a couple more years, but 18 years in this job is enough. I was 49 in 1996 when I started and I’ve just reached the point where it’s time to move on.

Your final sitting must have been emotional?

It really was. My working life has been in the courtroom – that’s all I’ve ever done. To think it was the last time I would be in a courtroom wearing a gown was something. But it was great. My family was there, including nine of my grandchildren, sitting in the jury box.

Did they find you not guilty?

No, but I did have to field a lot of questions such as “Where do you see the naughty people?”

What will you take from the courtroom?

I’ve had a remarkably good run,

really. Things have fallen my way as the years unfolded. I’ve loved the court – it’s been the only stage I’ve felt comfortable on. I’ve been very lucky to stay in Christchurch because most judges, particularly when I was appointed, were shifted because it was considered inappropriate they stayed in the city they had been practicing in. I didn’t ask any questions.

What will you miss?

I will miss the whole thing. The atmosphere, the exchanges with the lawyers, the drama, the people . . . a courtroom is a place of theatre and it’s been a great privilege to observe and influence the way it unfolds. It’s been my life. I’ll also miss working here. I have a close working relationship with the fantastic court staff who I depend on, both for work and companionship.

What kind of judge would you say you were?

PRIVILEGE: Justice Graham Panckhurst was appointed to lead the Pike River Royal Commission in 2012, something he describes as a “privilege.”

Well, what kind of judge did you try to be?

I tried to be a good listener. Not to be too interventionist, and I always tried to engage with people as well. I really enjoyed doing jury trials because that was my background. I worked for 20-odd years for the Crown doing plenty of criminal trials so juries were my stock and trade.

What qualities does a good

judge need to have these days?

I think you need a range of personal skills and it’s best you come from a background where you’ve seen a bit of the world. We’ve learned a lot in recent times and are appointing a lot more women as judges, which is a good thing.

You’ve obviously got to have the intellect to deal with the issues you encounter, but I would say people skills are just as important. Intellect isn’t necessarily everything.

This job has a number of unique

features to it. There is an element of authority to the position. It can be a little lonely at times because ultimately it’s you who has to stand up and make the call. But I connect with my fellow judges twice a day at morning and afternoon tea.

Often, there are little issues that have cropped up that we want to discuss.

Have there been decisions you’ve tossed and turned about?

Dozens of them. It’s a feature of the job that you often wake up at 3am and start thinking about it.

Not necessarily the decisions that other people would think. I don’t tend to worry about decisions concerning money or commercial entities. Perhaps the ones that are worst of all are those that concern children. Decisions about relocating children, perhaps out of New Zealand to the other side of the world with their mother.

I had a case recently about a baby that had been removed from its parents because of allegations of abuse and I ultimately returned the child to the parents. Cases like that take the greatest toll and you really do agonise over them.

You will have presided over some harrowing cases. How do you cope with that in your personal life?

No, I can’t. I hadn’t heard that phrase used before Friday’s final sitting. I probably did have a style that was understated and I believed that raising your voice was rarely effective and the last resort if all else failed.

Your proudest moment?

I suppose doing the Pike River inquiry was one of them. It was a very difficult thing to do and was unrelenting. It was the only case I had on my plate for the better part of two years, so to publish a report that was well received, both from my peers and the families affected by the tragedy, was rewarding.

Super netball with netball superstars When you go away to watch great netball, wouldn’t it be fantastic if netball greats were there cheering alongside you?

Dame Lois Muir has attended an astounding 11 Netball World Cups since 1963 – as player, coach, spectator and tour leader. After playing in the 1963 World Cup team, she then returned to the fold as coach in 1975 continuing this job through the 1979, 1983 and 1987 campaigns. Since 1991 she has spent her time leading tour parties and spectating from the sidelines –what she doesn’t know about Netball World Cups really isn’t worth knowing. Next year she will lead our netball fanatics on the 11 night tour, fans who

thrive on the excitement as well as enjoy Lois’ insight into the game.

Tania Dalton is also excited to be joining the Silver Ferns Travel throng for the 4-night Finals Weekend package. Tania was in the Silver Ferns from 1996-2004 with another stint from 2006 to 2007. She attended the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games and 1999 and 2003 Netball World Championships – the last time the Silver Ferns won the title.

THE CITY council needs hard cash and the dire warnings from councillor Raf Manji came true. But it’s not all doom and gloom.

It’s election year and the Government will be looking at ways to attract more votes given the anger directed towards it following EQC and red zone issues. No doubt it will get out its wallet and throw cash at the council if it’s serious about the rebuild.

It’s been an odd experience listening to political parties making over-the-top bids for the Canterbury vote. The Government repeats CBD announcements holding pointless media briefings, with no real news value. Labour promises thousands of new houses for Christchurch but can’t explain where it will get builders from. The Greens are keen for everyone to live in sustainable glass boxes and want to cap rent prices – a good reason for private investors to go elsewhere – and Winston’s throwing his entire bank balance at Christchurch.

The worst case scenario for the council is that it faces a $900 million black hole if insurance company Civic Assurance fails to pay out. Heaven only knows why it’s taken four years for this company and reinsurers to get their act together. Transparency is high on the agenda for our elected representatives but not so for executives.

I requested an interview with Civic Assurance CEO Tim Sole. He declined saying he’s in litigation and cannot comment.

Truth is there’s nothing stopping him from providing the media, and thus, the people of Christchurch, an update on where he’s at with litigation with the reinsurers. How did the council get in to part of this mess?

The quakes didn’t help but nor did council staff signing off under-insured contracts on property and infrastructure. Ratepayers are entitled to clarity on these issues. Not so if you’re a council manager. I asked chief financial officer Peter Gudsell straight forward questions and got a pathetic response.

Question two: At the time, who was directly responsible for the insurance of our city? His response: “In June 2010 the general manager corporate services and corporate finance manager decided on placement of material damage cover. The general manager Corporate Services briefed the chairperson of the Audit and Risk Management Subcommittee at a meeting on July 23.”

Question three: When does the council expect a final settlement from Civic Assurance? He could not provide a time frame.

Former council manager Paul Anderson, whose staff failed to insure the Bromley plant, once said those responsible moved on and blamed a “clerical error.” A Fairfax investigation revealed Palmerston North firm, Good Earth Matters Consulting, valued the council’s building assets between June 2008 and June 2010. An Audit New Zealand report found the company did a “poor job” of 2008 valuations and poor work should have been picked up. But the council kept the company on anyway. “Some assets were substantially undervalued, meaning repair or replacement would far exceed the amount insured.”

The Government will show flexibility with its blue print as it will be keen to water down blame for the current state the council finds itself in. After all, it imposed grandiose anchor projects on to the city.

Emma-Jane McLennan reports on how restaurants, retailers and other services use tricks of the trade to make you spend more. How can you spot them and avoid being sucked in?

SCIENCE IS at play when you go to your favourite restaurant.

It is warm and cosy, the lights are dimmed and soft music is playing.

A delicious smell wafts through the air, you are shown to a table quickly and drinks are ordered.

Everything is going perfectly – but for who?

There is a science behind making money in the restaurant trade, Restaurant Association of New Zealand president Mike Egan said.

“We would be fools not to use that science.”

When reading a menu, most customers eyes will be drawn to the top-right hand side of the paper.

That is where most restaurants will put the dish they want to sell the most.

“Usually most dishes are around the same price, say $20. If one costs just $8 to make and we can get $12 from it, we’ll put the dish in that spot and it will become more popular,” Mr Egan said.

The more expensive items are there to make the menu look good.

Conversely, research suggests that diners look at the bottom-left of a menu last, so that is where the least profitable dishes are positioned.

Even the way the food and drink is listed can influence the way we spend.

Some restaurants will centre-align a list to make it trickier to compare prices.

Others might omit the dollar sign – something scientifically proven to make customers spend more.

But restaurants need to use these tricks to survive, Mr Egan said.

“The average restaurant makes about 3.6 per cent profit. Any ways to make more money are necessary.”

He also said that most restaurants have their customers’ best interests at heart, even if this means putting themselves out of pocket.

“I have often seen the opposite – where people might instead advise not to buy too much, and bring more later if they are still

Sales tricks are used right across the board, not just in restaurants.

Strategic sales science could be claiming more of your cash than you realise, Consumer NZ spokeswoman Jessica Wilson said.

“It’s never a dull moment. There’s always something on the horizon so you have to keep your eyes open.”

The Consumer NZ researcher said one of the biggest ploys at the moment is drip pricing, the practice of adding extra fees to the advertised price of goods and services.

You may not discover these types of addons until you’ve trawled through the fine print.

And if you’re buying products online, the extra fees and charges may not be revealed until you’ve almost reached the end of the payment process.

Delivery fees range from $5.25 (mobile or ezyTicket) to $13.75 (rural delivery).

There are no free options.

Before you finish the order, a payment processing fee of 99 cents will also be charged.

Most ticket sellers will have similar charges.

While drip pricing isn’t new, it is becoming increasingly common.

The Commerce Commission says there’s a growing trend for traders to separate additional charges from the headline price.

This creates the impression that products are available more cheaply, and also makes comparing prices more difficult.

Ticket touts aren’t the only offenders.

On top of a $156 flight price from Auckland to Sydney, House of Travel also charges a $14.95 booking fee for using the website.

If booking in person, either over the phone or in one of their branches, it will cost you $30 per person.

Harvey World Travel offers the same flight for $155 plus a $30 booking fee if using one of their staff, but you can dodge the fee by booking online.

Fly with Air New Zealand on a $138 Grabaseat return flight from Auckland to Wellington and the card-payment fee will add more than five per cent to the total cost.

You can avoid this fee by using internet banking, Travelcard or Airpoints Dollars to pay for your tickets.

Book a flight with Jetstar on a similarlypriced deal and card surcharges will add another six per cent to the cost.

You can avoid Jetstar’s surcharge if you pay by internet banking, voucher or Jetstar MasterCard.

A 12-month registration fee for a petroldriven 2000cc car is $431.25.

A diesel vehicle costs $572.62 plus onroad user charges.

The Fair Trading Act prohibits misleading representations about price.

But this hasn’t been effective, Ms Wilson said.

“We [Consumer NZ] would like to see allinclusive pricing rules. It also makes it much easier for price comparisons.”

All-inclusive pricing would force companies to disclose the full purchase price upfront.

These provisions have already been adopted in Australia.

Companies there are prohibited from advertising a component of the price without prominently showing the total amount the consumer has to pay.

Law changes due to take effect in the European Union this year will require inclusive pricing and surcharges for credit and debit card payments to be restricted to the actual cost of card acceptance.

At present, there are no specific regulations governing credit or debit card payment fees in New Zealand.

Consumer NZ would also like to see card fee rules adopted here.

“Otherwise, sellers are just double-dipping,” Ms Wilson said.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is not currently considering any law changes for inclusive pricing or card payments.

“All inclusive pricing was considered as part of the Government’s consumer law reform policy process,” Melanie Porter, manager of competition and consumer law for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment said.

“In general it was thought that there was not a sufficient problem to justify a specific prohibition.”

The Commerce Commission has advised retailers that they should not call a charge a credit card processing fee, or similar, if that charge is actually designed to generate profit or cover non-credit card costs.

There is also a lot of issues around sales, specifically: Are they really sales?

Ms Simpson said that supermarkets can be the biggest culprits when it comes to deceptive advertising. She said the “big attractive” special signs can lure people in, even when the product might be more expensive than others, or saving just a few cents.

ANCY a tangy wild pesto made from weeds? This is just one of the many ways you can befriend common weeds that like to take up residence in your garden patches and flower beds.

In this day and age of convenience shopping, weeds are not plants most people would consider eating on a regular basis.

We have become wary of anything that comes without shrink wrap or a barcode.

However, wild green plants (aka weeds) are still collected in many countries, supplying major sources of trace elements and vitamins in the diet.

It is easy to forget that most fruits and vegetables occur somewhere naturally as weeds. Every vegetable food cultivated today was once a wild plant, although most have been ‘improved’ beyond recognition.

Wild vegetables have specific genetic qualities that tend to get bred out during cultivation such as resistance to disease,

resilience to climatic variations and longer flowering seasons.

While the practice of foraging for wild greens may not be a component of your food gathering strategies as yet, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that some of these health-giving plants are growing right under your nose in your own patch.

Time to head out to the garden and scrutinise your weeds with edibility in mind. Instead of cursing those pesky weeds, pick yourself a handful of a wilder variety of greens. Give them a vigorous rinse under flowing tap water and whip up a batch of pesto.

All edible wild greens are very high in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is rich in digestive enzymes, which can assist in the digestion of heavier foods like starches and proteins.

It is best to consume these plants fresh as cooking destroys these enzymes. Wild Weed Pesto is therefore an excellent way to get your daily dose of green power!

EDIBLE WEEDS FOR WILD WEED PESTO Chickweed is loved by chickens and is very good for us human ‘chicks’ as well. Considered troublesome by some, chickweed has the good fortune to contain gama linolenic acid (GLA), a derivative of omega-6 fatty acid. This is rarely found in such an available food source so when your friends glance derisively at your abundant crop of this joyful little coloniser, you can quote this fact.

Landcress is a spicy little plant growing close to the ground. The Persians fed cresses to their kids to increase stature and strength, and the Celts used it as a spring cleaning herb for purifying the blood and toning the system. Few herbs are richer than cress in such a large array of vitamins and minerals essential to the functioning of the human body.

Puha is a vegetable native to New Zealand.

Traditionally it was one of the staple green vegetables for Maori. Puha is very high in vitamin A and a good source of vitamin C. Select young and crisp puha leaves with a good, even colouring.

Fathen has been used as a vegetable in Europe since Prehistoric times. It absorbs nutrients faster than any other plant, making it superbly rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Dandelions are one of the most nutritious plants on the planet, again super high in

minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. The very young tender leaves are the best part to pick.

Sheep’s Sorrel was used as a cure and preventative for scurvy for centuries, as it is high in vitamin C. Culpepper recommended it ‘to freshen overspent spirits’. Sorrel contains oxalic acid so don’t overdo it if you suffer from gout or heartburn. Its distinctive bitter lemony flavour makes it a great addition to pesto.

Cleavers – geese thoroughly enjoy eating this, hence one of its other common names is goosegrass. It is easily identified by its ‘clingy’ nature due to the hairiness of its leaves and stems. As a lymphatic tonic, it is used in a wide range of problems involving the lymph system, such as swollen glands (e.g. tonsillitis). Pick young stems before the fruit appears.

Gardening Advice with I have a Guava plant that is dormant over winter. I’ve had two small crops off this plant that I brought from a plant bargain bin when it was just a twig. My question is what do I feed it to get better growth and do you prune guava plants?

Guavas do have considerable nutrient requirements so to get the best out of your tree apply regular side dressings of Daltons incredible edibles® Fruit & Berry Fertiliser every 4-6 weeks. Start in late October when plants are coming into growth, until early December, recommencing again in mid-February through to mid-April. Make sure the fertiliser is applied out to the tree drip line (directly under the outer circumference of the tree’s branches) and watered in well. Bone during the same period of time as guavas particularly like this fertiliser.

To ensure steady growth, water your tree regularly during the drier months. Guavas should be pruned annually around early to mid-April, once fruiting has finished. Pruning ensures the shrub does not grow into a large tree which makes it difficult to collect the fruit. Aim to keep the tree around 2-2.5 metres high and about 1.5 across. Annual pruning also helps to open up the tree to improve light penetration, which helps ripen fruit.

andscape Design combines elements of art and science to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing extension of indoor living to the outdoors. One purpose of landscape design is to blend houses or buildings into the natural surroundings. To work toward a desirable landscape design, the landscape horticulturist must have a working knowledge of design principles and plants.

The Certificate in Landscape Design at the Southern Institute of Technology Christchurch Campus aims to provide students with the know-how to undertake a range of landscape design activities and associated operations within the horticultural sector at an entry tradesperson level. It is comprised of two modules that include NZQA unit standards at Level 3 and Level 4. You will gain skills and knowledge that will prepare

you for employment in the horticultural industry, specifically landscape design or to even tackle your own home project.

This Certificate in Landscape Design course is 14 weeks long and comprises of one evening class per week (for face to face delivery) at our Hornby Campus and self-directed study at home, where students complete assignments such as plant identification and preparing working drawings for landscape work.

Phones so smart they have an MD Health app use is up 87 per cent compared to other apps. In fact, phones could tell us when we’re facing a heart attack. Rhodri Marsden looks at the health data revolution THE BEST indicator we have of becoming unwell is that familiar, off-colour feeling. Our senses are the most reliable early warning system we have.

Technology may be about to change that. Lurking within imminent updates of the two main mobile operating systems, Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, lie two software frameworks (HealthKit and Google Fit) that have been described as “the beginning of a health revolution”. They enable apps to collect, collate and exchange information about our state of health that could ultimately usher in a new era where our phones know we are unwell before we do.

First came the fitness gadgets and smartbands: we became fascinated by the data and information generated by our movements. A recent study by Flurry Analytics found that usage of fitness apps is growing some 87 per cent faster than the app market in general, as people embrace tools that reaffirm or improve their fitness levels.

What’s intriguing, however, is

the emerging grey area between fitness data and what could be termed health data. Although smart bands and associated apps tend to collate relatively benign information such as hours slept, miles walked, caffeine consumed or time spent brushing your teeth, there’s provision within Health Kit and Google Fit for information we’d normally associate with a visit to our GP — blood pressure, oxygen saturation, hydration levels, blood sugar levels and heart rate.

“It’s a step towards more medically orientated devices that lend themselves to capturing data that health professionals can act upon,” says Dr Dushan Gunasekera, founder of myHealthCare, a private polyclinic based in South London.

That data, of course, has to come from somewhere. HealthKit and Google Fit are merely aggregators that facilitate the ingenuity of software and hardware developers, and that ingenuity is being funded by big increases in health-related venture capital. iPhone-compatible oximeters and blood pressure cuffs are

There’s Dario, a “mobile diabetes management platform” that combines a smart meter to measure blood sugar levels with a smartphone app which interprets that data, along with other information you provide regarding carb intake and exercise. The smaller and cheaper these health sensors become, the easier it will be for data to be collated; for example, Google is working on a smart contact lens that could assess glucose levels in a more unobtrusive way then Dario’s smart meter.

Apple’s HealthKit has received backing from the Mayo Clinic, a

Minnesota-based medical research group that has tested a system of direct notifications whereby clinics could inform patients of unusual patterns in the data they’ve received. “The big vision is to switch from the old patient funnel where you feel sick, tell a friend, see a doctor, get tests, receive the results,” says Ben Heubl from Zesty, a healthcare appointment booking service. “The new funnel is different: you track your results anyway because the devices do it for you, and book an appointment online automatically.”

The burgeoning interest in wearables looks set to breed a

new-found curiosity in our health data that extends beyond the usual hardcore of health obsessives.

“GPs already get people who print out reams of information from the internet and walk in having already incorrectly diagnosed themselves,” says Dr Gunasekera.

“And this wealth of data will create anxiety among some people. But when a patient comes in, it’s useful to have a historic set of data and metrics: you’re able to correlate things a lot quicker in the initial consultation.

“There will be challenges and hurdles, but it feels like the first step towards this elusive thing that everyone talks about: preventative medicine.

“You’re always going to get resistance to technology,” says Dr Gunesekera. “When automatic blood pressure monitors were introduced a lot of GPs were unhappy about using them, and there will be concerns about accuracy.

But the other main concern is confidentiality. It’s crucial that medical data cannot leak in any way.”

Even though tech giants such as Apple and Google will be only too aware of the critical importance of data security, publicised cases of data leakage are bound to breed a lack of trust in any company that retains sensitive health information in digital form.

4 large scoops French vanilla icecream 1 large cup Proper Crisps in Marlborough Sea Salt, lightly crushed 1/2 cup long thread coconut, lightly toasted 4 meringue nests, optional Toffee: 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup water

1 cup chopped pitted Trade Aid Medjool dates ¼ cup orange juice 1 cup peeled and diced orange 3 cups self-raising flour ¼ tsp salt 50g chilled butter, chopped 1 and ½ cups milk, warmed 2 tbsp Fairtrade cane sugar Heat oven to 210 deg C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

In a bowl, combine the chopped dates with the orange juice and cover with plastic wrap. Microwave for 1-2 minutes, until the dates absorb the orange juice. Add the diced orange.

Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add the warm milk to the date and orange mixture, stir to combine then mix quickly into the flour with a spatula. Do not knead.

Turn out on to a floured bench. Dust the top with flour and pat out to an even rectangle about 2.5cm thick with your hands.

Cut the mixture into squares or rounds.

Place the scones on the prepared tray.

Sprinkle with the sugar. Bake for about 20 minutes.

CHOCOLATE POTATO TRUFFLES The mashed potato must be free of seasonings, cream and butter. It should also be very well mashed and have a smooth consistency.

Place chocolate chips in a microwave-proof bowl. Melt on 50 per cent power for about 2 minutes. When completely melted, stir into mashed potato very well.

Add vanilla essence and stir well again. The mixture should be smooth. Chill for 30 minutes.

Cut ginger into thirds or quarters. Take a tablespoon of potato mixture and roll around a piece of ginger.

Repeat with remaining mixture. Place on a plate and dust with dark cocoa powder.

Roll into small balls. Dust with cocoa. Refrigerate until firm.

Can be stored in fridge for up to one week.

Makes 16.

Refreeze the scoops of icecream. When hard, roll in the crushed crisps and coconut.

Freeze, until ready to serve.

To make the toffee, place sugar and water in a large, microwave-proof glass bowl.

Microwave on high for 2 minutes.

Stir to dissolve sugar.

Continue microwaving for 3-4 minutes until liquid is light golden. Remove — the toffee will continue to colour on standing.

Remove icecream from freezer. Place in meringue nests, if using. Drizzle with toffee. Serve immediately.

Serves 4.

400g waxy potatoes 4 eggs, free-range/organic, if possible 1 large shallot 4 tbsp olive oil 1-2 tsp diced or crushed chilli 100g squid rings 8 pitted black olives 8 anchovies, oil retained 2 tbsp white-wine vinegar Flaky sea salt Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Peel potatoes. Place in cold, lightly salted water. Bring to boil. Simmer, until cooked.

Don’t overcook. Slice thickly.

Meanwhile, place eggs in cold water. Bring to boil.

Simmer for 5-6 minutes. Cool, then peel and quarter. Slice shallot and place in icy water to crisp.

Heat a little of the olive oil in a frying pan. Add diced chilli.

Saute squid rings for about 2 minutes, until just cooked.

Combine with potatoes, shallot, eggs, olives and anchovies in a bowl.

Make a dressing using remaining olive oil, a little oil from the anchovies and vinegar.

Season. Drizzle over salad.

Serves 8 as a starter.

GLUTEN-FREE POTATO PASTRY 450g cooked warm mashed potato 100g butter, chopped 1 & 1/4 cups rice flour 1/2 cup cornflour 1 tsp salt 1 egg, lightly beaten Place warm mashed potato and butter in a large bowl and mix well. Add rice flour, cornflour, salt and egg. Mix well. Use your hand to mix it, if easier. Wrap the dough in a plastic bag. Set aside for 30 minutes to rest.

Roll out to about 1cm thickness or thinner. Great for pie pastry or for sausage rolls.

Makes 800g.

MUFFINS 50g Fairtrade dark chocolate 1 and ½ cups plain flour 2 tbsp Trade Aid cocoa powder 1 and ½ tsp baking powder ½ cup Trade Aid cane sugar 100g butter, melted 1 cup milk 1 egg, lightly beaten Preheat the oven to 200 deg C. Lightly grease a six-hole muffin pan. Cut the chocolate into six even-sized pieces. Sift the flour, cocoa and baking powder into a bowl. Stir in the sugar. Combine the butter, milk and egg. Stir into the dry ingredients until just moistened. Fill ⅓ of the muffin cups with the batter. Add a chocolate piece to each. Cover with the remaining batter.

Bake for 20 minutes, until they start to come away from the sides. Cool on a wire rack. Great topped with chocolate icing.

Fill 1/3 of the muffin cups with the batter. Add a chocolate piece to each. Cover with the remaining batter. Bake for 20 minutes, until they start to come away from the sides. Cool on a wire rack.

Specs for Rex is about a boy lion who tries to hide his glasses because he thinks they’re bad.

When Rex doesn’t wear his glasses, he can’t see anything and his teacher notices and helps him.

His friend is Zoe, a leopard. She says she wants glasses like Rex’s red glasses and wants a play date with him.

The moral of the story is that people always like things in different ways.

It’s important to use things that help you, even though it makes you feel different.

Someone will always like you anyway.

New Zealand is only a few generations old, but there has always been a uniqueness about our character, at least until we became closer to the global economy and evolved into a more multi-cultural rather than bicultural society.

For more than a century now, one aspect of Kiwi life that looms larger than religion for many, is rugby. All Black rugby.

It remains our national game, and doesn’t display any real sign of losing that role.

The word “legend” is often miss-used, intending to create

some special gravitas about the person or situation it’s being applied to. It has even invaded television commercials.

To my mind, though, it’s best applied to the All Black players who have stood out over the decades. They’re the true legends of our young country.

Doctor Tom Johnson has brought together a publication that doesn’t just celebrate some of those All Black greats, he goes much further than that.

We’ve waited a long time for players like Colin Meads, Buck

Shelford or Andy Haden to say it how they really see it – in other words, what All Black rugby means from the inside looking out.

Johnson has managed to capture the essence of these All Black legends, along with coaches like John Hart, and interestingly from a societal perspective, he gets sports psychologists to share their thoughts.

What is that makes a team of 15 men in black win many more games than they lose, to have the best win-loss record of any team playing the game of rugby?

While All Black captains David

Kirk and Richie McCaw are the only two to have raised the Webb Ellis trophy high at the end of two Rugby World Cups, seldom has the All Black team been outflanked or out-muscled for anything other than short periods in the annals of the international rugby arena.

The insights that Dr Tom Johnson has prompted from the players, the coaches and the psychologists make very interesting reading.

It’s not your usual rugby book, celebrating a newly-retired player of note. It’s a lot more than that, and much more worthy and readable because of it.

Legends in Black is a must-read for a very different spin on our game.

Versatile EcoSport THE WORLDWIDE trend towards sport utility vehicles is showing no signs of wilting.

There are a multitude of buyer types who like the idea and concept of the station wagon, all packaged in a trendy, functional design.

Of course, there is also a vast majority of people who simply just can’t stretch to the prices some manufacturers command, and there are buyers who don’t need a large model but like SUV practicality.

Enter Ford’s new EcoSport, it sits neatly in the marketplace here alongside Peugeot’s 2008 and Holden’s Trax. The EcoSport starts in the market at $29,990 and could be well be described as a mini-SUV. It sits on the Feista platform and at just 4.2m it is compact.

Other interesting measurements include a 200mm ground clearance and 550mm wading depth. The EcoSport isn’t four-wheeldrive and I would be hesitant about presenting it with low grip situations, especially where water is involved, but I guess if there is a short creek crossing or hilly mound then it is comforting to know it is unlikely to bottom out.

Mechanically, the EcoSport isn’t complicated, it doesn’t have fancy drive systems but it is well built and uses technology well proven across a range of Ford product.

The 1.5-litre, twin-camshaft, 16-valve engine is rated at 82kW and 140Nm. These

outputs sit high in the rev band at 6300rpm and 4400rpm respectively which means a revvy nature but also a reasonably wide spread of power throughout the rev band (6500rpm redline).

The engine is smooth and willing beneath the accelerator, it is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission, a gearbox Ford have branded throughout their model line-up. Simply labelled Powershift it is a conventional six-speed automatic, bar for the manual switching device on the lever. It allows the driver to select manual changes and is a useful device when power needs to be extracted or for slowing momentum when corners arrive or when stops need to be made.

Interaction between the engine and gearbox is smooth and there’s a natural progression of power between the ratios, there is just enough torque on offer so that the gaps are filled easily.

The EcoSport is lively, it will cut out a standstill to 100km/h time of 9.8sec, thanks a lot to its light weight of just under 1300kg.

That sits well with the readout during my time with the test car, it was constantly listing 8l/100km (35mpg). At 100km/h a 5l/100km (55mpg) figure is on offer with the engine not very busy at 2500rpm at that speed.

I took the test car on a loop which covered both hill and flat roads. The EcoSport takes on the handling qualities I’m very familiar with in European Fords. It feels lithe and nimble with chassis control and steering feel that promotes confidence.

Even though the EcoSport sits high on the suspension there is little body movement and gravitational change is unforced, the body is balanced over the suspension.

Even though the rear axle is a simplistic tube beam design there are few limitations with its movement and the spring and damper rates are compliant so that rut and bump absorption provides a comfortable ride along with the firming needed to provide that sporty feel. Incidentally, high quality GoodYear rubber (205/60 x 16in) has high grip properties.

above standard spec, leather trim, keyless entry and ignition and automatic air conditioning.

For my money, I’d be a starter for the entry-level car at under 30k, it doesn’t miss out on much and will offer good service for those who need something just a little different in a small car.

Yet, the EcoSport has been designed to make good use of its size, it has comfort built in, and even though it’s a squeeze for five it is fine for those who have three young children who travel with all of their requirements. Boot space is generous, there is a deep floor thanks to the spare wheel being located on the rear door.

Like other high profile automotive companies, Ford is reinventing itself for the global market, and in New Zealand product choice is changing dramatically, especially from where vehicles are sourced. The EcoSport is another example of that versatility that is landing on our shores.

What goes on in a ruck is a mystery WASN’T THE end of the Super Rugby final a massive punch to the gut?

I’m by no means a Cantabrian (I call the Waikato home, and have picked up allegiances to Auckland and Taranaki along the way), but even I felt sick watching the game end the way it did.

The range of emotions prompted by those last five minutes were quite something.

Nerves as Slade lined up the kick.

Even more nerves once he landed it, and the game looked to have swung the Crusaders’ way. Excitement when Whitelock stole a lineout. Then bafflement when Heinz kicked the ball away.

It was one of those ‘what on earth was he thinking?’ moments, which left most of Canterbury scratching their heads.

It’s not the first time I’ve seen it happen in that situation, so obviously the rugby brains trusts have decided that territory is a safer bet than possession in close games.

I’m not sure I agree.

Then there was the penalty.

It’s pretty hard to fault Richie for whatever it was he was supposed to have done in giving it away. Ninety-nine per cent of the time I have no clue what’s going on in a ruck, and I’m starting to think the same goes for refs.

The Crusaders came ever so close to breaking their title drought, only to be pipped at the last possible second. My view hasn’t changed from last week – this was a successful season, and there’s no reason to panic.

When it’s the Commonwealth Games’ turn, we don’t go looking to the same metric. I had a visit this week from reader Ray Hill, who has done the calculations when no one else would.

On the normal medal table, England came first, with 174 medals, followed by Australia, Canada, Scotland, India and New Zealand.

When you look at the per capita figures, our position doesn’t change. We’re still sixth. That’s probably why we don’t hear about them.

But isn’t it interesting Grenada, Kiribati, Samoa, and Nauru all leap to the top of the per capita list, so why not give them their moment in the sun?

It may not mean anything, but it’s still

worth noting, and I’m glad Ray brought it to my attention.

•It’s that time of year again, when the winners and losers are decided in club sport.

Rugby finished last weekend, with High School Old Boys coming out on top – don’t despair though, the ITM Cup starts next weekend.

Hockey comes to an end on Saturday, where Carlton Redcliffs will be looking to claim both the men’s and women’s titles, starting at 3pm at Marist Park.

In the women’s game, they play HSOB/ Burnside, while in the men’s game they play Harewood. However, they’ll need a change in fortune, as they’ve lost these match-ups every time they’ve come up this season.

Then on Sunday, it’s rugby league’s big dance, with the Halswell Hornets taking on Celebration Lions. There’s no love lost between these two sides and they’ve produced classics every time they’ve met this season.

With the a title at stake on Sunday, surely they will again. I’ll be there, and I’m really looking forward to it.

Injury keeps Johnson out of Sharks game

WARRIORS HALFBACK Shaun Johnson says his groin injury is a week-to-week issue and is uncertain just how long he’ll be kept on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old told the New Zealand Herald his rehabilitation process was a “mind game” with the severity of the injury feeling different from day to day and forcing him to be overly cautious with his training workload.

Johnson will miss Sunday’s home game against the Cronulla

Sharks at Mt Smart Stadium, the third week in a row he has been kept out of action, and was unable to give any firm indication of how far off his playing return might be.

“I’m feeling good and it’s certainly improving which is a good sign. Whether next weekend or the week after that I’m just not too sure so I’ll just take it easy and give it a good blowout some time this week and see how I go,” he said.

Having teammate Thomas Leuluai on hand – a qualified authority

on groin injuries after his own prolonged struggles (osteitis pubis) that saw him undergo surgery and a three-month stint on the sidelines – has been invaluable in helping Johnson understand his own injury and the need to be patient with his recovery.

“I’m definitely going to be cautious. Having Tommy around, he’s made me well aware of what sorts of issues and how it can feel at times and he’s been pretty spoton. It’s felt really good at times and

then I’ll just go and do something and all of a sudden I’ll feel it go again. It’s a bit of a mind game but if I just do my rehab and just stay disciplined then I’m sure it will come right.”

Johnson revealed he had played with various minor injuries throughout the season, and his latest problem follows a small groin strain suffered in the Warriors’ round 11 win over the Gold Coast Titans.

Hornets v Lions – how they shape up The two coaches and two Canterbury league legends take a look at Sunday’s grand final Celebration Lions coach BRENT RINGDAHL says he’s done all he can to prepare his side for the big game.

“If they aren’t motivated now, nothing I can do will help.”

“Our biggest strength is we play good all over the park – we’re strong on both sides.”

“We haven’t got to where we are because we’re weak.”

He says his team have been in a good place this week.

“It’s a matter of bringing them down to earth (after last week’s preliminary final win) and knowing the job’s only half done.”

He believes his team have what it takes to beat Halswell, on what will be their fourth attempt this season, saying it comes down to nailing the “one percenters.”

“They’ve all been very close games.”

“It’s just a matter of just doing the little things right at the right time. I think that’s the biggest thing we’ve been working on all week.”

Halswell Hornets coach DARRELL COAD says his players will motivate themselves on Sunday.

“It’s the biggest game for them for the year.”

“Completing sets and making sure we have a good gather and chase will be a big part of it.”

Halswell have had a week off since beating Celebration in the semi-final a fortnight ago, which had been a bonus.

“It’s been good for us, just letting guys get over their injuries. It was just a bit of a refresh weekend really.”

He said that while they’ve beaten Celebration three times this season, that doesn’t mean they will be taking them lightly this time.

“They’re a strong side across the park.”

All three of their games were decided by a single score or less, and he’s not expecting that to change.

“They’ve got class right across the park, and they’re a very big side, so they’re hard to contain.”

“We escaped last game with a late try, and I expect it will be a tight one again this week.”

GARY CLARKE, who was playercoach of champion Papanui sides in the 1970s, says grand finals are always good games.

“You’ve got to perform well, you know you’ve been playing hard all year, and it comes down to 80 minutes of rugby league.”

“It’s got to be played and you’re out there to win and get a medal – the winning medal, not the second place one.”

The key is to keep the same routine.

“The guys still did their own thing off the paddock – just travelled to the game the same way they’ve done all year round.”

“As long as they were in the dressing sheds an hour before the game for the team talk, that was the main thing.”

He also offered some advice.

“Give the coach 80 minutes and don’t stop until the final whistle goes.”

“You’ve got to give that 80 minute effort non-stop – if you’re not worn out or tired, you didn’t do your job.”

FRANK ENDACOTT has been involved in four local league grand finals and says they are always huge occasions.

“It’s huge for the club. It’s huge for the players involved, and the coaches and the managers.”

“It’s the biggest game of the year for these blokes, and one they’ll always remember.”

His sides had a mixed record in their finals – winning two and losing two.

“I’ve been on both sides of the stick, but always in close ones.”

He’s tipping it to be no different this weekend.

“I think on grand final day it’s always a 50-50 game and the reason I say that is these two deserve to be there. In my book they are the two best teams of the comp this year, and it could go either way.”

“Celebration have got the biggest pack of forwards in the town, while Halswell are the more disciplined, clinical side. If you’re off your game they can really put big scores on you.”

Lions ready for Hornets’ sting

By Andrew Voerman WINNING FOR suspended duo Kyle and Kasi Leka serves as big motivation going into Sunday’s club rugby league grand final, says Celebration Lions captain Kane Ferris.

His side takes on the Halswell Hornets in the Pat Smith Challenge Trophy grand final at Denton Oval, a game that fittingly brings together the two best teams in this year’s competition.

The Leka brothers were suspended following an attack on a Halswell player after the semifinal between the two sides a fortnight ago, and will play no part as they meet for the fourth time this season.

Halswell might have won all of the previous three, but Celebration know they have what it takes to win the only one that matters.

“With Kyle and Kasi being suspended for a few weeks, it’s brought our boys closer together,” said Ferris.

Avenging the absent duo won’t be the only thing pushing them on.

“Just to get one up on Halswell is enough in itself really,” he said.

“There’s a bit of tension there, but I think we’ve been talking

about what we have to do to get through these semi-final games, and we can’t let anything put us off too much.”

He said they would be staying focused on their own game, taking whatever Halswell might throw at them on the chin.

“We’ve got to keep aware of the big goal which is the title, and keeping 13 men on the field at all times to give ourselves the best chance of winning it.”

Halswell captain Will Tafua said Celebration have been the team to beat all season long, and while they’ve done the job so far, they won’t be resting easy on past results.

“I wouldn’t take anything from (results during) the season,” he said.

“We know that you can’t really take your history into the

final. We’ve learnt that from previous finals that we’ve played in.”

Tafua was talking about the last two grand finals, where Halswell lost to Hornby on both occasions.

They also played in the one before that, where they beat Celebration 54-16.

Ferris was part of the Celebration team that day, and said he remembers the game well.

“I think there’s four or five of us from that team left in the squad at the moment, and we’re definitely keen to turn the tide for this one.”

He said the loss of two key players hadn’t dampened their spirits.

“I believe in my team 100 per cent, even without Kyle and Kasi out there.”

“We’re just going to have to lift that little bit extra for the final,” he said.

Tafua said he and some of the other players with grand final experience at Halswell had been helping the

younger ones prepare.

“That’s what we’ve been doing this week, just making sure we keep talking to them and letting them know they’ve got the goods to be there, and that it’s just the same as any other game.”

He said that while the semifinal had been an emotional game, especially given the incident afterwards, it was out of their minds this week, with each player focusing solely on the challenge ahead.

“I know my role is to lead from the front, and I just have to focus on that.”
