Student Wellbeing.

Creating a positive culture and ensuring the individual wellbeing of our students is something we take very seriously at St John’s. It’s part of the St John’s way, where everyone is responsible for upholding the College values and striving to achieve a respectful, inclusive and joyful College community.

By emphasising the importance of positive emotional, social, spiritual, physical and intellectual development of our students, we are helping them gain the skills and competencies to flourish in their educational journey.

The two go hand in hand and we firmly believe that positive student wellbeing underpins academic and leadership success.

Student wellbeing is the responsibility of all members of our community however we do have staff members dedicated to the care and development of the social and emotional aspects of each student’s education including a Pastoral Care Deputy Principal, College Psychologist, College Chaplain and Student Protection Officers.

Faith Mission and Wellbeing Centre Aligning closely with St John’s values, the centre is purposefully designed to offer students a safe, confidential environment to talk and problem-solve wellbeing concerns and to nurture spiritual growth.

The centre is home to the College Chaplain and College Psychologist, and supports the holistic development of our students.

House System All students at St John’s are allocated to one of four houses. The house system forms the basis for the pastoral care of students within our College. Each house takes part in sporting, cultural and community activities, where the emphasis is on fostering a sense of community and belonging, generating integration and interconnectedness across all year levels, and encouraging the formation of friendships.

Secondary students attend a short home group lesson each day. These classes are vertical groupings that include students in all three Middle School years or all three Senior School years from the same house.

Students stay in their home group with the same teacher throughout their Middle and Senior schooling.

It is here that your child will develop the confidence and leadership skills they need to be a future leader in their community.

Kindergarten.

Children love to learn, and St John’s Kindergarten allows each child’s curiosity and creativity to flourish.

Our Kindergarten provides the perfect balance of child-led inquiry, purposeful play and lots of fun in a caring and nurturing environment.

Being part of St John’s gives your child the added advantage of access to the College facilities and specialist lessons in Chinese, Music, Speech and Drama, Physical Education and Library, as well as the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP), an internationally renowned framework for exceptional inquiry learning.

In Kindergarten your child will be immersed in a wide range of engaging learning experiences, both inside and outside the classroom and will be invited to join the rest of the College for special events such as Book Week celebrations, STEM and Sports activities.

Inquiry learning is integral to the teaching and learning programs we offer at St John’s. Our inquiry-based program focuses on the development of the whole child and lays the important foundations for future learning and success.

NURTURING AN ACTIVE MIND & A HAPPY CHILD

St John’s Kindergarten has been assessed by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACEQA) with the curriculum based on the national Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), ‘Belonging’, ‘Being’ and ‘Becoming’, enhanced by the PYP. We operate five-day week or five-day fortnight programs, from 8.30am to 3.00pm during school term and provide outsideschool-hours care and vacation programs for families who require this service. Our Kindergarten programs are designed for those turning four years of age by 30 June in the year of attendance.

At St John’s, students and teachers are learners together and the experience becomes shared. This is learning that is memorable and meaningful. It is also learning that nourishes curiosity and creative thought.

Junior School - Prep to Year 6.

In Junior School, our curriculum is specifically designed to prepare your child for a rapidly changing future, where they will need resilience, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and reflection.

Encompassing all the key learning areas of the Australian Curriculum presented through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) in engaging and thought-provoking ways, our Prep to Year 6 curriculum inspires students to ask deep questions, use their curiosity and inquire.

Dedicated and passionate teachers who are highly experienced in primary education, work together to ensure the right balance of explicit instruction and student-led inquiry in their lessons. They closely monitor the development and needs of each child and personalise their journey to meet individual learning goals.

Age-appropriate and engaging learning experiences extend your child and help them to reach their potential. Learning Enhancement, including support for students from non-English speaking families, offers differentiated learning experiences for identified students.

Weekly specialist lessons enhance our curriculum and provide your child with enriched experiences in Music, Speech and Drama, Library and Innovation, Chinese and Physical Education. In Years 1 and 2 your child will participate in Chess lessons linked to the Mathematics curriculum and from Years 3 to 6 they will receive a musical instrument and small group instrumental lessons.

Our specialist STEM teacher provides opportunities for your child to learn about the interconnections of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Your child will love experimenting to learn about their world, delving into coding and robotics and seeking to identify solutions to global problems.

International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program.

At St John’s, we follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) from Prep to Year 6. The PYP is a curricular framework based on the most current best-practice educational research from around the world.

The PYP prepares students for the intellectual challenges of further education and their future careers while focusing on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world at large.

The program aims to develop students’ academic, social and emotional wellbeing, through a focus on internationalmindedness and strong personal values.

The St John’s curriculum is built on the PYP framework of five essential elements – knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action. These elements help equip students with the skills needed to be successful, both now and in the future.

We work with the five elements to construct a rigorous and challenging primary curriculum that meets the needs of an international community, while at the same time developing unique and effective programs that meet the needs of the broader school community.

As an IB World School, we are active participants in an international community of teachers, students and educational researchers, and we are fully committed to recruiting and retaining proven professionals. Middle School - Years 7 to 9.

Your child reaches an important stage in their growth and development during their Middle School years, facing a range of adolescent challenges that are physical, cognitive, social, emotional and moral.

Our Middle School curriculum is specifically designed to meet the development needs of students in early adolescence by way of stability, continuity and diversity of challenge.

Years 7 and 8 Students study a core of seven subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Physical Education, Language Acquisition – Mandarin Chinese or German, and Religious and Values Education.

In addition to the core subjects, your child will study six specialist subjects on a semester or trimester rotation: Music, Drama, Visual Art, Food Technology, Digital Technology and Design and Engineering Technology.

Year 9 Our Year 9 students continue with the core subjects and additionally will select two elective subjects from Visual Art, Music, Drama, Enterprise, Physical Education, Chinese, German, Design Technology, Digital Technology, Biomedical Science and Engineering. All electives are subject to sufficient timetabling and demand to meet viable class numbers.

In Year 9, your child will also participate in a year-long program called The Rite Journey which starts at the beginning of the year with a calling ceremony where you and your child are challenged to embark on the transition to young adulthood. It ends with a symbolic homecoming event to celebrate their achievements. The aim is to transform your child into a young adult, armed with the tools to be more resilient and better equipped to make decisions in this rapidly changing world.

Middle School Precinct.

Newly completed in 2022, the bespoke Middle School Precinct creates a vibrant environment of visually stimulating and practical spaces that students can identify with, personalise and call their own.

With this opportunity to re-envisage teaching and learning at St John’s, the new precinct incorporates purposeful and meaningful learning and gathering spaces that give our Middle School students a sense of physical belonging here at the Secondary Campus.

This fresh and modern redevelopment incorporates withdrawal pods in each classroom offering a retreat away from the main area for students to work and study, writable wall spaces, flexible classrooms and furniture, and outdoor learning and gathering spaces.

Each space has been created in an intentional and effective way to ensure students are connected, actively engaged and achieving their potential.

Senior School - Years 10 to 12.

Senior School at St John’s, while challenging, offers a supportive environment, shaping students who are courageous, respectful and driven to succeed.

Reflecting our global focus, our senior curriculum draws from global best practice and prepares students for their vocational pathway of choice. As a result, our students develop the skills, wisdom and understanding needed to remain relevant and competitive in a changing world.

The senior curriculum is structured to prepare students for a range of post-school opportunities including tertiary education (university or TAFE) or a vocation of their choice. Your child is encouraged and assisted to choose a pathway through the Senior School that best suits their post-school aspirations.

A primary goal of St John’s is to assist our students to become lifelong learners and develop life skills that enable them to be capable and confident global citizens who are equipped for the challenges of any future.

Year 10

Years 11 and 12

This serves as a foundation year. The emphasis is on transition and preparation for the rigorous requirements of the final two years of schooling. The ‘move up’ to Senior School recognises the developing maturity of your child and with this comes more opportunities and responsibilities – and some important decisions about the future. A focus of the Year 10 program is the introduction of your child to the increased expectations of assessment in the Senior School. Your child will have the opportunity to explore the various subject offerings available and will determine their subjects for Years 11 and 12 during Term Three of Year 10 and commence their Year 11 studies (unit one) in Term Four of Year 10.

During Term Three of Year 10, your child will select the six academic subjects that they will study in Years 11 and 12. Your child will commence these subjects in Term Four of Year 10. In reaching this important decision, they can draw on their experiences in trialling subjects in Years 9 and 10. Subjects offered include a wide range of general and applied subjects for students wishing to be awarded an ATAR as well as a number of VET Certificate III and IV courses.

Core subjects in Year 10 include English, Mathematics (General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology), Humanities and Social Sciences (History, Geography), Study Skills, Health and Physical Education, and Religious and Values Education.

Students also have the option of completing a TAFE Queensland qualification through a TAFE at School course while continuing to study at school. Successful completion of a TAFE at School course gives the student a nationally-recognised qualification, QCE credit points and direct entry into any TAFE Queensland diploma course.

In addition, your child will select three elective subjects from Enterprise, Chinese, Drama, EALD Support, Music, Physical Education, Design and Engineering Technology, Digital Technology, iTech or Visual Art.

St John’s offers students in their senior phase of learning access to VET courses, preparing students for their transition from school to work.

Accelerated Learning.

St John’s has established a tradition of forward and innovative thinking in creating the optimum learning environment to support exceptional student achievement.

The SOAR program aims to empower students with exceptional academic ability and motivations, through opportunities to access curriculum engagement in advance of their allocated year level.

Through subject timeline customisation, your child will be challenged and extended academically, enriching their St John’s educational journey through a targeted pedagogical experience.

SOAR students accelerate through the Australian Curriculum and the senior phase English/Mathematics curriculum up to one year ahead of their cohort and will then have the opportunity in their senior phase to engage in a bespoke, personalised pathway opportunity that is responsive and progresses them toward their chosen pathway.

Students can apply for one or both programs, SOAR English and SOAR Mathematics. Entry into the program is by application only.

Currently available for students from Years 5 to 12, the College seeks to provide further SOAR program opportunities in selected subjects during the academic year.

Outdoor Education.

Students from Prep to Year 12 participate in our Outdoor Education Program designed to develop your child’s self-confidence, teamwork and leadership skills, challenging them to grow. The program has been developed in collaboration with specialist outdoor education providers to specifically complement our curriculum and meet the needs of our students.

Performing Arts.

The Performing Arts Centre of Excellence provides a diverse range of opportunities for your child, from experiences in the classroom to group, individual and co-curricular activities. With a purpose-built auditorium, drama rooms and recording studio, this state-of-theart facility is a fantastic venue for students to rehearse, record and perform.

Instrumental Music Program Your child will have the opportunity to study a band or orchestral instrument within our Instrumental Music Program. Learning a musical instrument is compulsory for students in Years 3 to 7. From beginners through to those studying for their music exams, we employ a number of the finest professional musicians and teachers in Queensland to ensure that the tuition is the best available.

Dance The Dance Troupes at St John’s provide opportunities for your child to enjoy a range of creative dance styles including jazz, contemporary and musical theatre.

Offered in the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools, the dance troupes perform throughout the year at showcases, events and eisteddfods.

Drama Drama Troupe provides the opportunity for your child to enjoy creating drama with other students appropriate to their skills. There are also opportunities for performances throughout the year.

Offered in Middle and Senior School, Drama Troupe enables your child to build communication and teamwork skills, develop their confidence and self-esteem, extend their acting skills and learn about different forms of drama.

College Musical.

St John’s College musicals are well-known and loved throughout the community. Produced every second year, these polished, highly-anticipated musicals provide many opportunities for your child to be involved in the Arts from performing on stage, in the orchestra or even behind the scenes with the production or technical crews.

Staged in our state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre of Excellence, the musical provides students with a real-life performance experience.

Past productions include Seussical the Musical, The Little Mermaid, Annie and most recently Disney High School Musical on Stage which was performed to record audience numbers.

Sport.

St John’s comprehensive sporting program is a key component of our College’s holistic, balanced approach to education. Through regular high-quality sporting competition against like-minded independent schools, your child will develop the human attributes necessary for their future including teamwork, reliability, responsibility, self-discipline and leadership. These skills provide the foundation for success in all educational endeavours.

Students are motivated to participate in sports for many reasons. Interschool Sports St John’s has long been a member of The Associated Schools (TAS) and Junior TAS Sporting Association (JTAS) with participation for students in Years 4 to 12 in the year-round Saturday sporting competition. A variation on some of these sports are also on offer for those students in Prep to Year 3.

The Associated Schools competition is built on comradery and participation, allowing young students to learn sport within a friendly environment and providing opportunities to students wishing to seek a pathway to elite sport.

As part of our sporting program, students are required to demonstrate commitment to training and games, be supportive of their teammates and respectful to their coaches. This agreement between the student and the College helps to grow a positive and supportive sporting culture at the College.

Athlete Development.

Sports development is an integral part of St John’s, offering additional learning opportunities for our aspiring young athletes. With a renewed focus on our sporting endeavours, several athlete development and mentoring programs have been introduced at St John’s to complement the existing sports program.

St John’s Foundation The St John’s Foundation works collaboratively with the College under the direction of the College Council with a dedicated Board of Directors.

The St John’s Foundation was established to support and assist the College to preserve, improve and develop the standards, services, property and facilities of the College.

At the heart of the Foundation, is the aim to maintain and strengthen community connections with past and present families, the wider community of supporters and the Old Collegians’ Association.

In recent years, the St John’s Foundation has supported the Colleges’ ongoing development through the raising of funds for capital works for several key buildings including the Performing Arts Centre and the St John’s Sports Centre Redevelopment.

Parents and Friends’ Association St John’s parents, students and staff value the friendship and resource benefits of a supportive Parents and Friends Association.

St John’s Parents and Friends Association exists to raise money to provide and improve the amenities for the College and its students through strengthening community engagement.

The Parents and Friends’ Association comprises of three sub-committees including, Friends of the Arts (FOTA), Supporters of Sport (SOS), and Friends of the School (FOS). Each of these sub-committees oversee the fundraising initiatives for many of St John’s extracurricular activities.

Parents of the College are encouraged to get involved in the Parents and Friends’ Association’s various meetings, events and fundraising initiatives throughout the year.

Old Collegians’ Association After graduating, your relationship with St John’s doesn’t end, through the Old Collegians’ Association, you continue to be connected with the College with an automatic lifetime membership in the association and its associated benefits.

The mission of the OCA is to maintain contact with and represent the interests of past students of St John’s as well as supporting the College community.

St John’s Home Boarding.

St John’s Home Boarding offers a unique boarding alternative for Australian families. Students from regional and rural Australia can now access an exciting and joyful coeducational learning experience in private boarding with our long-established and trusted homestay families.

Our educators are dedicated to providing a nurturing, challenging and rewarding education to enable your child to grow a strong sense of self, be agile and responsive to the changing world as they become a person of influence in the global community.

For many families that require flexibility and convenience, St John’s Home Boarding offers weekly or term-time private boarding with our homestay families for students from Years 6 to 12.

From the moment your child joins St John’s, they will become part of a special, inclusive community with the courage to soar in school and in life.

In addition to the valuable opportunities to develop independence, resilience and personal growth, St John’s Home Boarding fosters a sense of family and belonging, developing lifelong friendships with fellow students and homestay families.

As a St John’s Home Boarding student, your child will be safe, comfortable, supervised, and supported both academically and socially. Your child will be immersed in the St John’s way of life, being involved in some of the College’s many rich co-curricular activities and supported through the student wellbeing structure while having the option to return home on the weekend to spend time with their own families.

After and Before College Care (ABCC).

As part of our commitment to families we provide two outside-school-hour care services; ABCC for students in Years 2 to 6 and Early Years ABCC for students in Kindergarten to Year 1. Both services are located on our Junior Campus.

Our ABCC services follow the National Quality Framework and utilise the ‘My Time Our Place’ (ABCC) and ‘Belonging’, ‘Being’, and ‘Becoming’ (EY ABCC) documents to create engaging and age-appropriate experiences for your child. Connecting with our community is a focus of our services and we welcome input and involvement from families and the wider community.

Each term our program is developed through consultation with the children and opportunities are provided that allow them to interact in groups or spend time on individual activities. Your child will participate in creative and imaginative play, music, dance, drama, art and craft as well as choosing to have time to think and create. Activities are designed to stimulate your child’s emotional, intellectual, lingual, physical, recreational and social potential.

The service is also available for Junior students undertaking sports training, private tuition and other activities held before or after school at St John’s.

Fees and Operating Hours A small fee applies to our ABCC programs and is published annually. Families wishing to register their children for an ABCC program or a Vacation Care program can do so through our College website.

Getting to St John’s.

St John’s is located in the suburb of Forest Lake, in Brisbane’s southwest – approximately 25km from Brisbane CBD. A range of bus services, some combined with rail transport, ensures that students can reach St John’s from all points of the compass. The College has several buses to complement chartered services.

Private Bus Service St John’s provides a dedicated bus service to assist families by transporting children to and from the College during term time.

Students are supervised off the bus and into the Junior and Secondary Campus grounds by duty staff. It is not recommended that students in Kindergarten to Year 2 travel on the buses unless they are accompanied by a sibling in at least Year 5. This requires prior approval by the College.

Bus travel can be paid for via St John’s My Shop platform.

Students who travel without their student ID card or with no credit on their card will be charged at the standard rate published on the College website.

St John’s Late Bus A late bus will depart the Secondary Campus at 5.00pm after the completion of school-based activities on days when a booking has been received by 2.00pm. This bus will not run if a booking has not been made. For specific details regarding the route for this service, please refer to the College website.

Enrolling at St John’s.

We understand that selecting a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you and your family will make. In a nurturing and caring educational environment, St John’s empowers every student to excel in their academic, social and personal achievements. By equipping our students to face the challenges of the future, St John’s graduates are well-educated, respectful, resilient and compassionate people of influence in their communities.

St John’s welcomes applications for enrolment at any time. For the main intake years, it is recommended to lodge an application at least three years prior to your child’s intake year. The main intake years are: • Kindergarten • Prep • Year 7 Increasingly, families wanting to take advantage of the Senior Pathways Program enter at the commencement of Year 10 to get a head-start for ATAR subjects which commence in Term Four of Year 10. Students are not required to sit an entry test.

A student wishing to enter the College at an alternate year level will be considered as places become available.

Step 2 – Application Submit an Enrolment Application via our College website and online Enrolment Form. The application must be accompanied by the non-refundable application fee.

Information on which documents must be submitted at the time of application is stated on the online form.

Please note, that the submission of an application is not a guarantee of a place at the College.

International students should submit the St John’s International College Enrolment Application form found in the International Student Enrolment section of our College website.

Step 3 – Interview

Step 5 – Acceptance of Offer

Students and parents will be invited to attend an interview with a member of the Senior Leadership staff.

For Kindergarten applications, these will take place approximately 6 months prior to commencement. For Prep to Year 6, these will take place the year prior to commencement and for Years 7 to 12, within three years of commencement.

To accept the offer of a place at the College, parents must sign an Enrolment Agreement and pay the nonrefundable confirmation fee to secure their child’s place at St John’s. Parents have 14 days from the date of the offer to accept.

Step 4 – Offer Offers are made following the interview process at the sole discretion of the Principal after recommendations from the Senior Leadership staff.

The Principal will forward a Letter of Offer to successful applicants.

Enrolling During the School Year Subject to availability, St John’s will consider applications for students wishing to enrol at any time throughout the school year. The same enrolment process outlined above applies.

Scholarships St John’s offers a small number of Scholarships for excellence in Academic, Sporting or Performing Arts pursuits each year together with the Home Boarding Rural Scholarship. Scholarships are available for students entering Year 7 and Year 10.
