WESTSPEED JUST GETS BETTER & BETTER AS WE INTRODUCE

WESTSPEE D PL AT I NUM - 2014 FOALS -

- 2015 FOAL CROP ONWARDS -

All 2014 foals by a Western Australian based stallion automatically become eligible for the new Westspeed Platinum incentive scheme– a very lucrative extension to the already rewarding Westspeed. There will be no extra cost to Owners for their horse to be eligible for the additional bonuses that Westspeed Platinum will provide.

For foals born in 2015, Stallion Owners had the opportunity to nominate their stallion standing at Stud in Western Australia as a Westspeed Stallion – it is only foals by a Westspeed Stallion that will be eligible for the additional Westspeed Platinum bonus that increases to $15,000 for every Westspeed win in a prime metropolitan race. This takes the Owners bonus to a minimum of $30,000 or $37,500 if nominated as Westspeed Extra!

When this generation of horses begin their racing careers in 2016, Owners will receive an additional Westspeed Platinum bonus of $10,000 for every Westspeed win in a prime metropolitan race. This sees the Owners bonus jump to a minimum of $25,000 or $32,500 if also paid up for Westspeed Extra!

THE FOLLOWING STALLIONS WERE NOMINATED AS WESTSPEED STALLIONS IN 2014 AND THEIR PROGENY ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE NOMINATED AS WESTSPEED PLATINUM WHEN NOMINATIONS CLOSE IN 2016. ADMIRATION

IAN MALPASS RWWA CHIEF THOROUGHBRED HANDICAPPER

Article by Ernie Manning Recently appointed Racing And Wagering Chief Thoroughbred Handicapper Ian Malpass was born into the thoroughbred racing industry.

Program amendments are scheduled to be introduced in February."

But it was a visit to a Melbourne's spring racing carnival at a young age which firmly convinced Ian his career should be in racing.

“The requirement to maintain a competitive wagering product on a Saturday afternoon is paramount if we are going to compete with rival wagering options afforded to the everyday punter. This review is aimed to improve that product.

The 27-year-old Ian, a son of former jockey and country racehorse trainer Ray Malpass, was a Bunbury schoolboy when he first saw racing's elite gallopers.

Ian was born in Bunbury on January 6, 1988, the very same day Ray rode his last winner in a race. That winner was a horse named Doyson’s Hope.

"I accompanied Dad on a holiday to Melbourne in October, 2002," Ian said. "We attended major race meetings each Saturday over a month and saw Northerly score three brilliant victories when at his peak

“It was 3YO maiden at Bunbury and was trained by Bernie Cowcher as Dad recalls. The horse was a bit of a ‘roughie’ however it proved too good on the day.”

"It was an unforgettable experience to see Northerly's Caulfield Cup triumph with 58kg and his performance to win a second Cox Plate. "On the Saturday before the Caulfield Cup, we were lucky enough to see Lonhro and Sunline's superb duel in the Yalumba Stakes. "After the highly memorable Melbourne experiences in 2002, I knew a career in racing was one for me," Ian said. "Outside school hours, I gained valuable experience by working at the Bunbury stables of trainers Michael Lane and Kim Prentice. Both operations were highly successful during the periods I was there, any both imparted knowledge on me that I still use this very day in my work at RWWA. "But I later heeded Dad's advice to enter racing administration, rather than try the tough task of training horses." Nine years ago, Ian began employment at RWWA. After seasons of learning and fine-tuning handicapping skills with expert tuition from current RWWA Racing Manager David Hunter, the promotion of Ian to the senior role was announced in August. His appointment has been made at a significant time in WA racing.

Ray Malpass, from a family of eight children, was raised in Redcliffe. "Some of Dad's family worked for Ascot trainers," Ian said. Several top horses were ridden by Ray Malpass in trackwork as an apprentice. "Dad rode some great horses in his time. Not only does he speak fondly of the likes of Little Imagele, Heron Bridge and Asian Beau, but also of the great trainers who prepared such magnificent gallopers. Trainers like Noel Donovan, George Daly and Bert Harrison were highly influential in Dad’s career. When Ray moved to Bunbury, he became associated with the stable of revered trainer V. A. (Sonny) Scott. Prolific winners Noble Aster, St Leonard, Tanfinane, Janeena Star, Portage and Copper Tito were prepared by Scott, whose achievements remain discussion topics among old-time horsemen. Scott topped a WA trainers' premiership based on city and provincial TAB meetings wins. These days, Ray is content to follow the North-West and outer country circuits, where he has won about 20 races in the past year. Travelling the circuit with mostly ‘tried’ horses Ray continues to notch up winners at some of the furthest reaching tracks.

David Hunter and Ian, after in-depth consultation with a wide range of industry stake-holders, are overseeing proposed changes to the WA race programming strategy, from early next year.

Ian's RWWA duties are not confined to the handicapping department, where he currently works with other handicappers Vinny Meens and James Ryan. At race meetings, Ian is often on the race judging panel.

"Changes to the race programming strategy will seek to increase field sizes at metropolitan race fixtures," Ian said. "We've been consulting industry stake-holders at workshops and meetings.

He clearly recalls officiating as a judge when high-powered raiders Buffering and Moment Of Change fought out an exciting battle in the 2013 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot. Features RACING AHEAD - November - 3

Ian Malpass - RWWA Chief Thoroughbred Handicapper "I travelled to Melbourne two years ago and saw champion Black Caviar on the day she set a Flemington 1000-metre course record in beating Moment Of Change and winning her third successive Lightning Stakes," Ian said.

"My learning time with Greg provided considerable benefits to my knowledge," Ian said. "I remain in regular contact with chief interstate handicappers, racing management and am now also a contributor on the Australian Classifications Committee (ACC).

"I'll been keeping a close watch on Sydney and Melbourne races. A number of classy interstate horses are expected to race at Ascot's carnival in our feature events over the summer.

"The standards of Group and Listed Races are regularly discussed."

"The Emirates Stakes held on the last day of the famous Flemington Cup Carnival is often a good guide to the Railway Stakes and Kingston Town Classic." Horses prominent in the Emirates Stakes have traditionally continued onwards to Perth carnivals. Following on from a deep interest in Flemington carnivals, Ian has further boosted his handicapping knowledge with a term of working at Greg Carpenter's Melbourne office.

WA racing handicappers and officials have been keenly sought by interstate and overseas racing jurisdictions. However, Ian says he regards his new role as a long-term RWWA appointment. "Handicap races still remain the most widely accepted form of racing in Australia. It's difficult to imagine the Melbourne Cup changing from a handicap to weight-for-age." "I'm enjoy my handicapping work here, and if I can play my part in making the future of racing in Western Australia more prosperous, then I will be more than happy with that.” he said. 

her maiden victory after previous attempts at Pinjarra, Northam, Roebourne and Junction. Clarke has since taken giant strides in her development as a rider and figures prominently in the 2015 Touchstone Farm Rising Star Series. Her application, dedication, attitude and hard work was reflected at Racing and Wagering Western Australia’s recent Apprentice awards when she was crowned Trainee of the Year. 

Albert Edmund Cockram King Of The Racecourse 1870-1943 is the documented story of my great grandfather who owned Belmont and Goodwood racecourses until his death in 1943. He was the largest importer of thoroughbreds into Australia in his time and was the father of racing in Australia. Why do I say this statement? When you read the book you will see that he was bringing in the bloodlines from England, Ireland and France in the early 1900's. As an example he purchased the first Flying Fox colt, Flying Fox was a top horse in the UK. Many of the top Uk horses found their way back to Australia as Albert had the knowledge of choosing amazing thoroughbreds. Albert was born in Gingin and went to Hale school. He excelled in business and became one of the wealthiest men in W.A. He imported the first Rolls Royce into the State and his entrepreneurial interests were many and varied as owner and Chairman of Griffin Coal, President of the Merino Breeders Association, Vice President of the Royal Agricultural Society, explorer of the North West, land developer and pastoralist and with the breeding and buying of trotters, and racehorses he was a busy man. My book takes the reader on a journey from the beginning of Belmont to the Cockram horses who scorched across Australia winning Perth Cups, Sydney Cups, Epsoms and other majors recorded through the eyes of the 50 or so Australian newspapers of the day who followed Albert and our W.A. racing history. Men such as James Nicholas, George Towton, Bolger, and many other trainers and Jockeys and owners. Many families will find their own names recorded in this book if they were in racing, mining and agriculture in the years from 1870 to 1943. This is our history, the history of racing through my great grandfathers eyes and all documented for posterity. The Hon Norman Moore is launching the book at Ascot on 28th of November in the Members Stand at 9.45 am and Bob Maumill is launching it in the country at Pinjarra Trotting on Monday the 7th of December at 11am. Books will be for sale on these days or you can contact me on mcsweeney@iinet.net.au and eftpos is available.

Landor Races 2015 Article by Nigel Weston The Annual 94th Landor races were on the weekend of October 3 and 5, with a crowd of over 700 people attending the weekend. With The West Coast Eagles playing in The AFL Grand Final, the crowd was down considerably on previous years. This was a one-off occurrence as the Grand Final is rarely played on The Landor Weekend. These figures show that Country Racing is alive and well and the popularity of Landor is as strong as ever. Saturday’s Feature Race was The $4645 Landmark Ladies Bracelet (1200m). It was a keen betting affair with many chances and the pace was on from the word go. Smile Hi Club, Bintang Bob, Mandamus and Northern Affair showed blistering speed and cleared away early. Smile Hi Club managed to get the better of his rivals and kicked away to beat a gallant Bintang Bob and the fast finishing Oh Precious. The win kicked off what was to become a big weekend for Trainer Wayne Woods and Jockey Glen Hodges. Former New South Wales galloper, Our Evolution, was a big success story of the day for Trainer Shayne Carter. The 7 year old Grey won

the $3085 Hampton Transport Woodlands Handicap (1000m) and was produced later in the day, winning the $3085 Beringarra Handicap (1400m). On both occasions the horse showed good speed and railed brilliantly around the tight track, which was a key factor in both his wins. Jacquelyn Scott had prepared a strong team for the weekend and was rewarded with a Double on the first day. The most impressive win was of Hand Cannon in The $3085 VNW Independent Yarlarweelor Handicap (1400m). A maiden runner going into the race, The Musket 4 year old, went straight to the front and some quality runners behind him were unable to chase him down. Due Sasso mare, Undue Influence, was Scott’s other winner and she showed great speed and strength to hold off the fast finishing Kojarena in The $3085 Ramelius Resources Ben Wilson Handicap (800m). Riding Honours on Day 1 went to Victorian jockey, Glen Hodges, who is a Trackwork rider for the powerful Robert Smerdon stable at Caulfield.Hodges also won on The Woods Trained Moshayer, a Geraldton winner last year, who proved too classy in The West Coast Poly F.T. Steadman Handicap(1000m). After a warm Sunday and a good turnout for The Gymkhana, a smaller crowd was on course for Elders Landor Cup Day. A quality field of 7 runners lined up for The Cup, with Smile Hi Club the favourite, following his win in The Bracelet on Saturday. Smile Hi Club led early, but quickly handed up to About Turn. Positions changed quickly throughout the race and at about the 800 metre mark the 2 Jacky Scott runners Lord Hammar and Hammars Order took over and looked big chances. However, Smile Hi Club was being perfectly ridden behind them and was always in striking distance. Jockey Hodges made his move and quickly loomed up and eventually went past a very gallant Hammars Order and Lord Hammar who missed the start by 4 lengths. It was a

Landor Races 2015 fitting result for Wayne Woods who returned to Landor as a Trainer and won The Cup named in memory of his father John. The day was only going to get better for Woods, winning 2 more races with Kojarena and Pegasus Park. Hodges had a huge day, riding 4 winners for the day.The most convincing of his winners was Carnarvon trained and 5 times Geraldton winner, Mr Lonely, who bolted in by 14 lengths in The $3085 Northam Air Services Mt Clere Handicap (1400m).

The racing this year went up a peg or two. You had to have a handy galloper to win a race this year and the Jockey standard was also high, with 11 riders competing. This meant the end for another Landor weekend, always good racing, good fun and good people. 

A new trainer to Landor, Levi Dillon, picked up a nice horse called I’m Addicted, who was originally trained by Adam Durrant. I’m Addicted won on both days quite impressively. A popular win in the last race was Bintang Bob for Leonora Trainer David Broad. Having run 2nd twice over the weekend this looked a good race for him and he duly saluted, ridden by Irish rider Leon Joughlin. Presentations were handed out in the evening with Jacquelyn Scott, The Leading Trainer, just ahead of Wayne Woods. Hodges was a clear winner of The Jockey award and The Grey, Our Evolution, won Horse of The Year.

COMMUNITY TAB AND OFF THE TRACK MAKE YOUNG RIDERS DREAM REALITY

RDA Swan Valley Vice President Jan Pavlinovich said they believe Cookie will be a great partner for Naomi one day.

Community TAB and Off the Track have joined forces to sponsor 15 year old Lower Chittering girl Naomi Parker to attend the Riding for the Disabled (RDA) National Dressage Competition in Melbourne last month.

“Naomi has to be looked after and can’t rough it like the other kids, so the $5000 sponsorship meant she could truly enjoy it and not feel like she was putting any pressure on anybody because Community TAB and Off the Track have met her and taken her under their wing, which means a lot,” Ms Pavlinovich said.

Community TAB and Off the Track took the financial burden off Naomi’s family by donating $5000 towards travel, accommodation and transport needs for Naomi and her carer during the competition. Naomi was born with spina bifida and ever since she was 8 years old has been attending RDA Swan Valley along with other riders with disabilities and special needs. Naomi said it had always been her dream to be chosen for Nationals and it has given her a sense of achievement to know that she made the team. “Attending RDA has meant I can do things and get places that I usually can’t being in a wheelchair and going to Nationals meant everything to me,” Naomi said. “RDA is special to me because I am able to learn things on the horse, it’s a really good feeling and I love it.” Naomi’s father Steven Parker said it was a wonderful opportunity for Naomi to fly over to Melbourne and for her to experience it all. “It would have been very hard for us if Community TAB and Off the Track didn’t sponsor Naomi so it made it a lot easier and a much more enjoyable experience,” Mr Parker said. “RDA has been family to Naomi, all of the staff and volunteers have been so helpful, supportive, and always go the extra mile. “Naomi feels at home at RDA, the horses are her friends and when she gets on a horse there is a special bond and she has freedom.” Naomi was also recently awarded the 2015 Most Improved Rider of the Year Award through Community TAB’s sponsorship of the organisation. Off the Track provides retired Standardbred racehorses to RDAWA centres throughout WA. The horses are used for riding and carriage driving for wheelchair bound clients. Recently a retired racehorse named Your Good Fortune, aka ‘Cookie’ was gifted to RDA Swan Valley by Off the Track. Cookie was a very successful harness racehorse and is now excelling in his second career. He was recently used in a Hippotherapy session and proved to be a very valuable asset.

“Naomi’s parents have other children with special needs who they have fostered, they are wonderful people and I am in awe of what they do.” RDAWA is a voluntary not-for-profit organisation which provides opportunities for people with disabilities and special needs to develop their abilities physically and mentally with therapeutic horse-riding activities, and also helps with social inclusion. There are 17 RDA centres in WA that provide this vital service to over 1,000 riders. The RDA National Dressage Competition is being held on Wednesday 28 to Friday 30 October at the Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre in Melbourne.

COMMUNITY TAB RACING INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS Early this year Community TAB launched a new initiative that enabled it to partner with race clubs across the State to help those organisations who help our community. Community TAB asked every race club in WA to nominate a not-forprofit community group to come to their race clubs major race day and fundraise. Community TAB will then match dollar for dollar what is raised. Since the launch of the program in February, Community TAB has matched the funds raised by 40 different WA not-for-profit organisations, with another 8 clubs committed for 2015. Community TAB has matched over $50,000 in funding. Some of the recent groups Community TAB has donated money to include Toodyay Men’s Shed, Toodyay St John Ambulance, Meekatharra Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade, Northam Agricultural Society and Collie Lions Club. The program allows WA race clubs to recognise what organisation in their own community needs funding assistance and this helps to grow the financial and social support for their community. 

LATEST NEWS FOR WA COUNTRY CUPS The Face of WA Country Cups, Nikki Gogan, spent a busy time travelling across the State attending major race events in Kalgoorlie, Toodyay and Northam over the past couple of months. September saw the return of the iconic Kalgoorlie Race Round, which kicked off with the Boulder Cup on Sunday 20 September and concluded with the Kalgoorlie Cup on Sunday 27 September. Ms Gogan made the trip to the Goldfields to attend the Golden Mile Trotting Club’s Mt Eden Mile (23 September) and the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Race Club’s Hannans Handicap (24 September). “The Kalgoorlie round is something that our family of four attends most years. My Mum, Dad, sister and I have done the car trip to Kalgoorlie on many occasions,” said Ms Gogan. “So it was an honour being able to return to the track this year as the official Face of WA Country Cups!” During her stay Ms Gogan was able to catch a glimpse of some of Kalgoorlie’s prized possessions including the famous Super-Pit, Hammond Park and Australia’s only legalised Two-Up School. Following on from her trip to Kalgoorlie, the Face of country racing returned home to the Avon Valley to join in on the celebrations of the Toodyay Race Club’s 150th anniversary on Sunday 27 September. “Last year I was lucky enough to be invited as a guest judge to the 2014 Toodyay Cup, so it was great being invited back again, especially with this year being a significant milestone for the club,” said Ms Gogan. But it was Ms Gogan’s debut as the ‘Face’ in her hometown of Northam that stole the show. Last year Ms Gogan took out the WA Myer Fashions on the Field at Ascot and then went on to claim the runner up prize at the National Fashions on the Field at Flemington during the iconic Melbourne Cup carnival, in an Anzac inspired outfit. To celebrate her success Ms Gogan showcased her prize-winning outfit at this year’s Northam Cup on Sunday 25 October, sharing her achievement with those closest to her. “One of the most amazing parts of my Melbourne Fashions on the Field experience, was the backing and support that I received from my hometown,” said Ms Gogan. “However, not many people back home actually got to see my outfit, so I thought it would be nice to wear it to this year’s Northam Cup.” Next up for the Face of WA Country Cups is Bunbury Trotting Club’s Pacing Cup on Saturday 14 November. For more information on WA Country Cups head to www.wacountrycups.com.au. 
