Full systems go for Simon Miller Article by Ernie Manning

Popular trainer Simon Miller, maintaining a dominance of Ascot carnival gem the Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic, has made a pronounced impact on WA racing since his sharp change in career direction. Miller won the prestigious Lee-Steere Classic for a third time in four years when Liberty’s Gem scored stylishly at the Kingston Town Classic meeting on December 6. Further boosting his impressive winners-to-runners percentage, Miller won doubles at three of the first four Saturday fixtures in Ascot’s spring-summer carnival. It’s a far cry from the career which Miller was establishing in Melbourne banking. Educated at Geelong, he was rising swiftly in the financial world and had been promoted to a Business Banking Assistant Manager appointment. But when aged 24, he turned his back on finance to pursue a genuine love of racing. It is less than six years since Simon opened his winning account with Darntime, who scored Ascot victories at each of her first three starts after a transfer to the Miller stable. In the vicinity of 250 winners have followed for Miller, who is closing on the $10 million stake-earnings milestone. He has established an imposing honour roll in feature events. Power Princess, who blossomed after a transfer to Miller, won the Miss Andretti Stakes, Prince Of Wales Stakes, Scahill Stakes, Roma Cup, Jungle Mist Classic, H G Bolton Sprint and Northam Sprint. However, she is best remembered for her gallant third to super champion Black Caviar in Adelaide’s 2012 Robert Sangster Stakes. “Power Princess gave us plenty of excitement with her placing to the mighty Black Caviar,” Miller said. “Wonderful performances were produced by Power Princess, who was also a Winterbottom Stakes runner-up.” The Railway Stakes runner-up Platinum Rocker has also been an elite mare for Miller. She won the Asian Beau Stakes and Birthday Stakes, in addition to being a placegetter in the Northerly Stakes and LeeSteere Stakes. Taken to Queensland’s last carnival, she ran third in both the Silk Stocking and Glenlogan Park Stakes. Miss Rose De Lago has also drawn attention when travelling interstate for the Miller team. She ran third in the Typhoon Tracy Stakes at Moonee Valley last February. At Ascot, she has won the Burgess Queen Stakes and WA Champion Fillies’ Stakes, plus being runner-up in the WA Guineas and Northerly Stakes. “Impressive Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne performances by Power Princess, Platinum Rocker and Miss Rose De Lago are the fore runner of regular interstate campaigns which I’m considering,” Simon said. “My thought is to take two or three horses at a time to tackle feature events at selected carnivals in the Eastern States. “We’ll head East after Ascot carnivals.” Night War, who signalled Simon’s emergence to an upper level of racing when she won the 2011 Karrakatta Plate, was rightfully a Miller stable favourite. She also won a Magic Millions Perth ThreeYear-old Classic after running second in a Magic Millions Perth Two-

Year-Old Classic. It was Night War who launched Simon’s sequence of Sir Ernest LeeSteere Classic victories when she won the feature in 2011. Hard Ball Get triumphed for Simon in the 2012 Lee-Steere Classic, which preceded his highly lucrative sale to Hong Kong. Liberty’s Gem also attracted substantial Hong Kong offers after winning the Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic, but his owners were not tempted to sell. It has been Miller’s astute judgment at yearling sales which helps him maintain one of the highest winning strikes rates among Australian trainers. He has twice topped winners-to runners ratios on national thoroughbred trainers’ tables. “The lead-up to yearling sales is a very special and enjoyable time for me,” Simon said. “I like going out to stud properties and assessing potential purchases in their natural environments. “Then, I arrive at yearling sale complexes up to four days before auctioning begins. In addition to the Perth Yearling Sale, I attend sales at the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne. “I get around and inspect every yearling at sales complexes. My purchases are chosen strictly on type. “When I like the look of a youngster, I then check it in the catalogue. I examine pedigrees only to estimate what a yearling is likely to cost.” Miller’s lengthy list of winners features numerous horses who were bought at prices which later made them bargain purchases. He bought Night War for $90,000 on behalf of Peter Bell and Ray Meadowcroft. Supremacy Stakes and Belgravia Stales winner Miss Solis, also a Karrakatta Plate placegetter, was purchased by Simon for $32,000. He paid $80,000 for Liberty’s Gem. Wild Stratus, a winner for Simon at her first three starts, cost $25.000 at a Perth Yearling Sale. Simon buys over a wide price range. Miss Rose De Lago cost $210,000 and Placid Ark Stakes winner Miss Bux was a $170,000 purchase. However, he snapped up Grey Cheval for $9000 at a Perth Yearling

Sale and the grey, a city winner at her first four starts, has earned in excess of $200,000. Quality has become the trademark at Simon’s stable. His numerous other black type performers have included Darlington Abbey, Single Spice, Saint Bro, Hussey By Choice, Fuld’s Bet and Senhor Da Gama. Darlington Abbey won a Magic Millions Perth Two-Year-Old Classic and a Gimcrack Stakes. She was placed in the WA Guineas, Belgravia Stakes and Burgess Queen Stakes. Single Spice won the Supremacy Stakes and was a WA Sires’ Produce Stakes runner-up. Saint Bro followed a Fairetha Stakes victory with his WA Guineas placing. Miss Andretti Stakes winner Hussey By Choice is a Belmont Guineas and Colonel Reeves Stakes placegetter. Belgravia Stakes and Placid Ark Stakes placings by Fuld’s Bet followed her Gimcrack Stakes win. Belmont Park and Ascot wins led up to Senhor Da Gama’s Perth Cup placing. Other multiple city winners including Sujet, Temporise, Ron’s Call, War Prince, Roman Knows, Late Night Flight and Sacred Crown have further boosted Simon’s tally of success. He does not dwell on winning statistics. “I have a policy of not looking at racing’s rear vision mirrors,” Simon said. “It’s all full systems go to the future for our stable.” Melbourne-born Simon is from a racing family. Bookmakers, thoroughbred breeders and horse ownership syndicators are among his relations. “I fondly recall my days at Victorian country race meetings, when I was often a bookmakers’ clerk for one of my uncles,“ Simon said. Miller was also a talented all-round sportsman. He was a highly regarded as a footballer and a triathlete, reached a tight golf handicap and was a State Squad tennis player. Surfing became his favourite pastime as a youth. Chasing big waves, he developed a passion for WA beaches. “I came from Melbourne to Margaret River and other well-known WA surfing locations a number of times,” he said. Travelling the coast line, Simon was attracted to Broome. “I attended six Broome Cup carnivals before a permanent shift to WA,” Simon said. On leaving school, Simon followed his mother in to Melbourne banking. He worked on weekends at then prominent Geelong trainer Charlie Goggin’s stable and accompanied gallopers to race meetings. After five years in banking, Simon made his big decision to learn the art of racehorse training.

“The 2005 SAJC Goodwood Handicap runner-up Solar Antiquity, a smart Melbourne winner, was another of Robbie’s horses during my era with his team. “I was Robbie’s assistant trainer when receiving an offer to be John O’Shea’s assistant trainer at Randwick.” Miller admits he was reluctant to move to Sydney. Expert media tipster Deane Lester, who was a part-owner of Big Pat, convinced Simon to make the shift. “Deane pointed out that John was a rising star in Sydney training ranks and I could acquire specialised knowledge by working with him,” Simon said. O’Shea, who had learned his skills while employed with the legendary Bart Cummings, had a strong team headed by $3.7 million stake-earner Racing To Win. He won the 2006 Doncaster and Epsom handicaps double. Racing To Win was also a George Ryder Stakes and George Main Stakes winner in 2006. O’Shea has been appointed as chief Australian trainer for global racing super power Godolphin and it is predicted he will have up to seven or eight runners in the next Golden Slipper Stakes. “Invaluable experience was gained during my time with John O’Shea,” Simon said. “When out in a trainers’ hut at the centre of Randwick, I was able to also closely watch training techniques of Bart Cummings and Gai Waterhouse.” After 18 months at the O’Shea stable, Simon received a great opportunity to link with Aquanita Racing and open their Perth stable. He moved back to Melbourne, working with established Aquanita Racing trainers Robert Smerdon and Tony Vasil for a year to learn the Aquanita team’s approach to racing and business. “Robert taught me a lot about selection techniques at yearling sales,” Simon said. “I moved to Perth and began with space for five horses. “It was 2010 before we got established and started to win consistenty.” Simon now has a 34-horse team, accommodated at modern stabling within walking distance of Ascot. “I consider the Ascot facilities are first-class,” he said. “Our tracks manager Cameron Sutherland also has the racing surface in top order.” Miller pays tribute to his dedicated staff. Stable foreman Michael White, who also worked for John O’Shea, has been with the Miller team since its establishment in Perth. Assistant foreman Ian Clarke started in his role four years ago. Former jockey Kyle Nowland, who landed Perth and Melbourne winners, has also been with the Miller team for four years, in racing manager and trackwork rider roles.

“I went to work full-time at trainer Robbie Griffiths’ Cranbourne property,” he said.

At the time of my visit to Simon’s showplace Mathieson Road premises in mid-December, his team all looked pictures of health and fitness.

“It was a great seven years there. Dandy Kid, who held a record for the most wins at Moonee Valley, was our stable favourite.

The recent Miller-trained winners, including Liberty’s Gem, Fuld’s Bet, Sujet, Temporise and Meteoroid, appear to have bright futures.

“Robbie is an excellent trainer. In 2003, he took over Big Pat and advanced him to win the Saab Quality. It was a big day when he ran for us in the Melbourne Cup.

As I left the stable, Simon was heading over to Ascot for a track inspection.

“Big Pat finished 10th and it was highly memorable experience.

He is clearly a thorough professional who leaves nothing to chance. 

Off the Track, together with Perth Racing were pleased to be able to showcase some of our retired Thoroughbred racehorses excelling in their post racing show jumping careers. The interest from race patrons was obvious, with a large crowd gathering at the conclusion of each race to watch the exciting jumping rounds. A selection of 8 riders from a racehorse trainer, and Olympic dual medallist to a young 20 year old, and the excellent behaviour and performance of each horse, proved how adaptable former racehorses can be in different equestrian disciplines and standards of riders. Thank you to Perth Racing and our WA trainers and owners for supporting the event.  [Images courtesy of Western Racepix]
